  • Malaysia ranks second in SEA for Chinese tourist transactions during CNY

Malaysia ranks second in SEA for Chinese tourist transactions during CNY

Malaysia is the second largest market in Southeast Asia for Chinese tourists spending over the Chinese New Year holiday season, as recorded by Alipay, the digital payment and lifestyle platform offered by Ant Financial, an affiliate company of Alibaba Group. The transactions were recorded between Feb 4 and 10 this year. Malaysia saw a 16% increase in average per-capita spend by Chinese tourists this year, with a growth in transaction volume by 71% compared to 2018.

What’s more, Chinese millennials can no longer claim to be the dominant user group spearheading spending while travelling, as 68% of Chinese tourists born between 1960 and 1979 were found to be the main driving force in outbound tourism and overseas consumption.

Alipay head of business operation for cross-border business Janice Chen said this year’s findings highlight how mobile payment is taking root in China’s outbound tourism market, and it is excited to see the robust growth in the use of Alipay by overseas tourists from third-and-fourth tier cities and middle-aged vacationers.

“While providing a better experience for Chinese travellers, Alipay is, at the same time, a huge drawcard for overseas merchants as a platform to help grow their business,” Chen said in a statement.

This is in accordance to a recent report published by Nielsen and Alipay, called the 2018 Trends for Mobile Payment in Chinese Outbound Tourism.

Chinese tourists are bringing their cashless lifestyles outside of China, paying for 32% of their overall travel transactions using mobile payment, overtaking their use of cash for the first time ever.

The survey found that merchants offering Alipay as a payment option has experienced growth in both foot traffic (58%) and revenue (56%).

Heinemann, a travel-retailer with a store in Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) has also reported an increase in sales. Its general manager for retail operations Alexander Maas said since implementing Alipay, it is now able to provide added convenience to its customers from China, and provide them with a familiar shopping experience, ultimately seeing over 20% of all its transactions completed on the Alipay app with Chinese tourists.

With the increased popularity of Alipay among both young and old Chinese tourists, brick-and-mortar retailers across the region can continue to adopt Alipay as a payment option to further boost profitability moving forward.

Around 50 elderly people joined yesterday’s event on Monday 11 February, which was held at the Central and Western District Elderly Community Centre in Sheung Wan.

A hot, delicious, free Chinese meal from LAO ER by Crystal Jade was served for everyone to enjoy together. The meal was prepared at Deliveroo’s first Food Market in Sai Ying Pun and delivered hot and fresh to the Centre by two Deliveroo riders.

Deliveroo is also making a donation of HK$2,000 to the Central and Western District Elderly Community Centre of St. James’ Settlement, to help fund the gifts of the day and make the elderly delighted.

Brian Lo, General Manager of Deliveroo Hong Kong, said, “With more and more of Hong Kong’s elderly population living on their own, we are proud to support community initiatives bringing happiness and togetherness to stay-alone seniors. The event fell on the seventh day of the first Lunar Month, also known as “Renri”. This is an occasion traditionally celebrated in Chinese culture as the birthday of all humans. On this day, it’s customary for people to gather together, show gratitude and ask for blessings.

Alison Yung, Senior Manager (Continuing Care) of St. James’ Settlement, added, “Serving Hong Kong for 70 years, St. James’ Settlement has observed the rising number of elderly-only households. Having a reunion lunch on Renri is a beloved Chinese New Year tradition, and we have been delighted to work hand-in-hand with Deliveroo to provide a joyful afternoon meal for everyone to celebrate together. • Retail meets art in HK for Chinese New Year

Retail meets art in HK for Chinese New Year

Next week it Chinese New Year. It officially begins on February 5th, 2019, and ends on February 19th. This year will be the year of the Pig. It is the most important festival for Chinese people, so the city is fully decorated with festive installations. The retail world celebrates it with decorations and promotions. In Hong Kong, all shopping malls have already unveiled their gigantic installations.

In the financial heart of the city,  the floral pinwheels have turned IFC into the Garden of Fortune.

Dedicated to providing memorable and engaging experiences for guests beyond shopping and dining, the Chinese New Year is no exception for IFC mall as it presents The Garden of Fortune, a splendid installation featuring pinwheels to welcome good fortune and embrace new changes along with incorporating floral elements for a contemporary spin.

From 26 January to 17 February 2019, shoppers can visit the interactive display and enjoy music performances to ring into an auspicious new year.

Pinwheels have long been a symbol of luck with fascinating roots in Chinese culture. Traditionally associated with welcoming wealth, pinwheels are constructed using a variety of bright colors to greet the god of fortune, which are believed to bring prosperity and blessings to both homes and businesses. Playing on the Chinese tradition that pinwheels attract good luck, The Garden of Fortune is embellished with this auspicious symbol.

The pinwheels are designed in the shape of peach blossoms, peonies and begonias – flowers that represent prosperity and fortune in Chinese culture – to empower guests with positive vibes as they walk through the Garden of Fortune.

Upon entering the installation, guests are invited to play an interactive pinwheel game to start the new year with blessings to share and bestow upon friends and loved ones. ifc mall has collaborated with young local calligrapher, Rita Lee, to create downloadable “fai chuns” to share with family and friends after completing the game.

Lee started learning Chinese calligraphy at the age of 6 and has nurtured her talent with over 20 years of experience. She is known for blending different styles to create art that balances the tradition of Chinese calligraphy with contemporary flair. “I’m excited about this partnership with ifc mall as it allows me to use my craft to extend blessings to all Hong Kongers who visit the Garden of Fortune,” says Lee. “The installation’s fusion of traditional pinwheels with modern floral elements also reflects the same juxtaposition in my style of calligraphy.”

Pacific Place has built “Where Fortune Takes Flight” to welcome the Chinese New Year 2019. Queenie said that her design ideas come from the traditional Chinese New Year Candy box and chocolate from her childhood. Thus, they became the patterns of the kites, flying in the shopping mall. Queenie used vibrant colors and energetic brush strokes to draw on the kites, symbolizing a colorful and fruitful new year.An exquisite spring garden filled with blossoming flowers and over 60 flying kites, symbolising “Where Fortune Takes Flight”. Exclusively designed by Queenie Law, the kites soar to the highest heights and spread Chinese blessings throughout the mall and into the new year ahead.

In Tsim Sha Tsui, Harbour City will welcome the Year of the Pig with the “HAPPIG New Year” celebration, featuring a seven-metre tall gigantic “Wishing Treasure Bowl” at Ocean Terminal Forecourt from 25 Jan to 19 Feb 2019.

The treasure bowl is structured with multiple frames, on which colorful ropes were tied delicately to create geometrical festive patterns from cherry blossoms to gold coins.

The contemporary design is a stylish take on the Chinese New Year classic, wishing everyone joy and fortune for the Year of the Pig.

Newly introduced this year is an interactive wishing experience, inviting visitors to win a lucky pouch by taking part in a mini game and donating HK$20 near the“Wishing Treasure Bowl” installation.

Each lucky pouch contains a Good Fortune Card with predictions for the coming year, and a “Wishing Gold Coin” which can be deposited into “Make a Wish Piggy Bank” for making a wish. The coin will roll through a lucky tunnel connecting the piggy bank to the gigantic “Wishing Treasure Bowl”, bringing fortunate blessings to everyone for the New Year.

  • Chinese New Year to drive sales for businesses

Chinese New Year to drive sales for businesses

Despite lacklustre consumer sentiment, businesses are gearing up for brisk sales as consumers do their Chinese New Year (CNY) shopping for the much celebrated festival next week, with many businesses citing CNY as an important sales contributing season. LG Electronics Malaysia general manager of marketing Kong Mun Keen said festive season campaigns, whether CNY or Hari Raya, contributes bigger sales for LG.

“We often see a spike in sales whenever festive seasons are fast approaching,” he said, adding that this year, LG Electronics Malaysia has allocated a “substantial amount of budget” for its CNY campaign.

Although only a month into 2019, he said LG Electronics is “on the right track” in terms of sales.

By distinguishing itself with its technology and product experience, Kong said LG’s strategy has always focused on reaching out to all Malaysians, evident through its brand store openings in 2018, where it works with partners to drive new consumer touchpoints.

“Malaysia has always been a priority market, given that LG has secured and maintained a strong position in the home appliances and home entertainment segments here. With our premium and unique positioning coupled with innovative and consumer-centric products line-up, we are confident that there will always be a demand for our products here,” said Kong, adding that it is constantly ensuring that its products can integrate seamlessly into consumers’ lives.

For big-ticket items like cars, Edaran Tan Chong Motor Sdn Bhd (ETCM) executive director Tan Keng Meng expects its CNY sales to be about the same as last year’s or better.

“It’s always CNY and Raya. These are the two peak seasons,” said Tan.

In conjunction with CNY, ETCM added the new imperial red colour to the popular Nissan Serena 2.0L S-Hybrid Premium Highway Star, featuring a two-tone theme. Additionally, ETCM continues the introduction of Nissan X-Trail X-Tremer in passion red and two additional colour options.

Meanwhile, a Uniqlo Malaysia representative said festive periods are traditionally good opportunities for retailers to grow their sales, adding that it continues to experience healthy sales growth this year.

“We believe this is due to our commitment to produce high-quality products at accessible prices while keeping with today’s fashion trends. Customer service is also a top priority to ensure that our customers have the best shopping experience possible.”

As with previous years, it believe that customers are always looking for something new and fresh to start their new year.

“We are bringing many new items to the store for customers to choose. We will also be launching the Uniqlo U collection on Feb 1 for last minute shoppers to get their new year clothes.”

The representative said customers are consistently looking for items that are value for money and Uniqlo is well positioned to meet their needs.

Tohtonku Sdn Bhd head of marketing Vicky Lim said CNY is one of the peak seasons for sales with its back-to-back promotions in December and January.

But instead of spending on CNY promotional campaigns, Lim said, the company, which markets personal care and household products with brands like Follow Me, Nutox and Nanowhite, still focuses on brand communications.

A representative for The Body Shop said although CNY is not its largest festive season sales contributor, it dresses up its stores with decorations that symbolise the blooming of spring and the festive mood of CNY.

“We offer prosperous gifts such as hampers. This year we picked British rose as the main product that appeals to a wider target audience and with its colour of pink, it’s in line with the colour scheme that represents CNY.

“Our staff are also dressed in mandarin Oriental tops and we play both instrumental and vocal music that reminds you of CNY.”

  • Vietnam’s interest rate rises in the lead-up to biggest national holiday

Vietnam’s interest rate rises in the lead-up to biggest national holiday

Banks have hiked deposit interest rates by 0.1-0.5 percentage points as the country’s spending demand surges prior to Tet. Private lender Asia Commercial Bank last Friday introduced a new interest schedule with an increase of 0.2-0.3 percentage points in rates on most deposit terms. It also offers rates proportional to the amount of deposit. Techcombank, another of the larger private banks, since January 21, has hiked rates by 0.2-0.3 percentage points for terms of up to 12 months.

Earlier, in mid-December most private banks had upped rates by 0.1-0.7 percentage points, while state-run banks increased them by up to 0.5 percentage points.

However, there are also a few banks that choose to ‘go against the current’ by lowering deposit rates on same products. For instance, BIDV, Vietnam’s biggest lender by assets, has just lowered interest rates on its deposit rate schedule effective from January 22.

BIDV’s 5-month savings is now 5.2 percent interest, down from its previously 5.5 percent which was its approved ceiling rate.

Previously, at the end of December 2018, BIDV increased the 5-month term interest rate by 0.5 percentage points per year.

On the same day, VPBank also reduced the interest rate on their 6-36 months terms by 0.1-0.5 percentage points.

Specifically, the bank’s regular savings interest rate with 6-11-month terms is lowered by 0.2 percentage points, and is now 7 percent. The 12-month term interest rate is 7.05 percent; both 13 and 15 month terms are down 0.2 percentage points, and are now 7.2 and 7.4 percent respectively.

However, VPBank still currently holds the highest single interest rate in the market of 8.6 percent for its 18-36 month fixed term savings.

Experts believe that the negative adjustment of interest rates at some banks such as BIDV and VPBank may be for the purpose of restructuring to meet the banks’ individual capital needs, and does not yet accurately reflect the interest rate trend in the following months.

In fact, the period before the Tet Lunar New Year holiday is when cash is still in high demand in the economy, as businesses need to withdraw money to pay bonuses and salaries, and people will withdraw cash to spend for Tet which will start from February 5.

At the conference on tasks for the banking industry in 2019 on January 9, Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) Dao Minh Tu said that banks have recorded a decline in deposits.

According to him, this is a phenomenon that banks need to keep their eyes on, to determine where the flow of capital has gone, to real estate or production, or another channel in order to make reasonable adjustments to their plans.

Tu said the SBV had adamantly stuck to its policy to stabilize interest rates despite very high pressure to drive rates upwards in 2018. Many small banks had raised short-term deposit rates to attract capital and improve liquidity, resulting in the central bank having to pump more money into the market or use other measures to limit and keep interest rates stable for businesses.

The deputy governor said the SBV had to balance between the conflicting interests of banks, savers and businesses to come up with an appropriate interest rate for the whole market.

The SBV targets credit growth of 14 percent this year, the same as last year. As a result, he noted, commercial banks will have to make better quality loans this year to avoid bad debt.

According to traders at the two wholesales markets, the supply of popular fruits for Tet such as grapefruits, mangos, tangerines and dragon fruits may be not much higher due to unfavourable weather last year.

About 150-170 tonnes of grapefruits and 100-120 tonnes of mango are expected to enter Thủ Đức Market a day on days near Tết, but their prices will rise sharply if there is a surge in demand.

Thủ Đức Wholesale Market’s management board forecasted that grapefruits can be priced at VNĐ60,000-65,000 per kilo for green skin grapefruit and VNĐ28,000-30,000 a kilo for Năm Roi grapefruit, while it is VNĐ130,000-150,000 for a kilo of Hòa Lộc mango, VNĐ45,000-50,000 per kilo of sweet tangerine and VNĐ80,000-100,000 per kilo of custard-apple.

Nguyễn Huỳnh Trang, deputy director of the HCM City Department of Industry and Trade, has asked the management boards of the two wholesale markets to keep track of markets and update supply-demand and pricing situations, in order to quickly report to the department and relevant agencies if there is a sudden fluctuation.

Coca-Cola brings back the Clay Dolls for Chinese New Year

Coca-Cola China has once again revived its festive ‘Clay Doll’ figures to help promote Chinese New Year festivities.

The commercial from McCann Shanghai features “evolved and refreshed” versions of the animated dolls, which first appeared in Coca-Cola festive campaigns in 2001.

Modelled on Chinese traditional folk dolls, the brand usually depicts the pair as gleefully trying to find ways to help bring loved-ones together at holiday time.

For the 2018 campaign, the Clay Dolls are shown causing mischief around a family dinner table in order to create moments of closeness.

The full campaign will see the dolls depicted on Coca-Cola packaging, while the ad will be shown on TV, in-store, on OOH, cinema and digital channels.

The campaign also continues the use of virtual Red Packets, which Coca-Cola launched on the Alipay platform last year, where consumers click to win real money – with amounts ranging from 0.1 to 99 RMB.

“We’ve found our Chinese audience to be strongly empathetic towards these characters and their cultural significance for Chinese New Year, having been associated with CocaCola for nearly 17 years”, said Richard Cotton, head of creative excellence and content, Coca-Cola China.

“They are Chinese New Year’s mischievous secret helpers and their characters reflect the spirit of the celebration, which is joyful and exuberant.”
