    Singapore completes public safety trials with NEC

    NEC and NEC Asia Pacific have announced the completion of three safety and security test bed projects, held in and near Singapore’s Jurong Island, under the Safety and Security Industry Program (SSIP) 2020.

    The SSIP 2020 is led by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and is being conducted in collaboration with JTC.

    The three trials were conducted over a period of 12 months from September 2016, and were aimed at using data analytics and security insights to address Singapore’s safety and security needs.

    They involved early detection of suspicious behavior, off-site security clearance of authorized personnel and on-the-spot enrollment for first-time visitor access to controlled areas.

    In the first trial, NEC provided and tested a system that utilized its high performance NeoFace Facial Recognition software together with the Intelligent Complex Event Processing engine which correlates audio and video analytics, to detect suspicious behavior and identify Persons of Interest (POIs) in both indoor and outdoor areas.

    The second trial facilitated off-site security clearance for entry of authorized personnel into Jurong Island, thus reducing congestion at checkpoints. NEC provided and tested a Bus Sensors Monitoring Management System using customized tamper-proof security sensors to prevent unauthorized opening of vehicle doors during bus journeys.

    The third trial tested the feasibility of an automated system to provide a more efficient method of enrolling first-time visitors for entry into Jurong Island. The system leveraged NEC’s biometric solution to expedite clearance of such visitors via on-the-spot facial and fingerprint recognition enrollment at car inspection bays.

    For all the three trials, the technologies provided real-time monitoring and alerts to the simulated Command Center, to inform the authorities of activities which may require law enforcement action.

    NEC completes green energy tower demo in India

    NEC has completed a demonstration in India involving use of renewable energy management technology at telecoms tower sites with unstable power supplies.

    The project incorporated solar power photovoltaic generation systems and lithium-ion rechargeable battery systems to reduce reliance on diesel generators as backup power sources.

    Indian tower companies are under pressure to reduce fuel consumption by diesel generators due to cost reduction requirements and the conditions outlined in the Indian government’s Green Telecom policy.

    The demonstration project was organized by the Indian government in collaboration with its Japanese counterpart and overseen by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). NEC was selected to implement the project in 2014.

    “NEC is focused on providing solutions for society that are friendly to people and the Earth,” NEC general manager for ESS Michihiro Ezawa said.

    “With approximately 400,000 telecom tower sites throughout India, there is a great deal of promise for these technologies to significantly reduce the impact on our environment, while improving business conditions. Moving forward, we aim to proceed rapidly with the verification of business models that enable effective commercialization of these technologies.”

    He said that through its involvement in the project NEC has demonstrated reductions in diesel fuel consumption, energy costs, CO2 emissions and total costs of ownership, as well as the safety of lithium-ion batteries and the reliability of AI-powered prediction technologies in estimating power failures and recovery times.

    NEC launches 5G SDN/NFV platform in Malaysia

    NEC Corporation of Malaysia and Netcracker have teamed up with red Hat, Juniper Networks and Dell EMC to launch a multi-vendor 5G-ready virtualization platform for operators and enterprises in Malaysia.

    The companies will launch a full SD/NFV solution capable of using IT virtualization technologies to virtualize entire classes of network node functions into building blocks that can be chained together to create communication services.

    The platform combined Netcracker’s hybrid operations management offering and business enablement applications with NEC and Netcracker’s virtualization deployment operations center and multilayer SDN controller.

    It also comprises Red Hat’s OpenStack platform, Juniper’s NFV networking services platform and Dell EMC’s PowerEdge NFV solution.

    Research from Netcracker indicates that the virtualization platform can reduce the time to market for new enterprise services by up to 70%.

    “To stay competitive in a global economy, service providers and enterprises in Malaysia will eventually have the need to adapt to 5G technologies,” NEC Malaysia Chong Kai Wooi said.

    “With our SDN/NFV 5G-ready solution, companies will be able to speed up the time-to-market for their potential communications services and/or any applications that run on 5G technology, improve cost efficiency and have the ability to offer new, revenue generating-services.”

    “As the industry moves quickly towards 5G technology, getting the management and orchestration environment right is critical to enable new IoT use cases requiring dynamic network slicing,” added  Netcracker CTO of SDN/NFV Aloke Tusnial.

    NEC opens first Advanced Centre for Experimentation (ACE) in Singapore

    NEC Corporation and NEC Asia Pacific today announced the opening of NEC’s first Advanced Centre for Experimentation (ACE), aiming to facilitate the company’s global Research & Development capabilities.

    The ACE is strategically located in Singapore, with its favorable research ecosystem and infrastructure, and forms a key component of NEC’s growth strategy in the Asia Pacific region. Operated by NEC Laboratories Singapore (NLS), the ACE leverages NEC’s core technologies and advanced solutions, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and ICT platforms, to create new value and contribute to a safer, smarter living environment for people and communities.

    The facility allows co-creation of solutions and provides a “living lab” for proof-of-concepts foradvanced solutions that help customers and partners, including governments and enterprises, in areas such as public safety, transportation and healthcare. This enables close collaboration with NEC researchers in a real world environment, and makes it possible to clearly understand thebenefits of new solutions before commercial deployment and operation.

    In conjunction with the opening of the ACE, NLS, which currently is staffed with 33 researchers/solution engineers, will hire an additional 50 researchers/solution engineers within the next three years, mainly specializing in AI, the Internet-of-Things, Cognition and cyber security, thereby contributing to the further development of Singapore’s R&D talent pool.

    Established in September 2013, NLS aims to accelerate time-to-market of NEC’s solutions for society. NLS core expertise is in the study of social concerns jointly with government, enterprises, and research institutes, and proposing a combination of advanced information communication technologies to form new solutions to solve a broad range of business and social challenges.

    NLS has conducted joint research projects with partners and customers around the world. This includes SMRT Buses, a public bus transport operator in Singapore. SMRT Buses and NEC launched Singapore’s first telematics monitoring system consisting of eco-drive sensors that monitor and analyze bus captains’ driving behavior in 2014. This has led to another innovative project with SMRT Buses to develop the Professional Learning and Training Management System (PROLEARN). PROLEARN provides a comprehensive approach to constantly monitor, proactively manage, and provide customized training for drivers with relevant operational and industry-specific competencies using NEC’s big data analytics technology.

    Colt has selected NEC and Netcracker Technology to enable and support its large-scale OSS transformation and for support in the deployment of the next-generation of its infrastructure, including virtualization.

    Colt will leverage Netcracker’s future-proof, next-generation OSS and Service Orchestration solution, which is a part of NEC/Netcracker’s Agile Virtualization Platform and Practice (AVP).

    Colt is a global high-bandwidth connectivity provider that delivers services to metropolitan small, medium and large enterprises as well as wholesale carriers in nearly 30 countries, through its intelligent, purpose-built, cloud-integrated network known as the Colt IQ Network.

    Netcracker’s OSS and Service Orchestration solution, a component of NEC/Netcracker’s AVP’s Hybrid Operations Management solution, will enable Colt to optimize its physical network and quickly monetize new investments.

    Also, Netcracker’s solutions will also prepare Colt’s infrastructure for the use of both physical and virtualized environments.

    NEC/Netcracker’s Service Orchestration solution will give Colt the ability to enable new levels of provisioning automation. This will shorten the time it takes to deliver new services to customers, eliminate the risk of provisioning errors brought about by manual processes and give Colt more accurate views into the network in order to provide enhanced support.

    NEC opens big data analytics center in India

    Japanese technology major NEC Corporation plans to strengthen its big data analysis presence globally as well as in India.

    NEC Corporation and NEC Technologies India Private Limited (NTI) have announced the launch of a Center of Excellence for Analytics Platform and Solutions (COE-APS) for promoting solutions and services of NEC’s Big Data & Analytics Platform, Data Platform for Hadoop (DPH).

    The COE-APS will simplify digital transformation and act as a one stop shop for both customers and partners in the telecom, retail, banking, financial services, insurance and manufacturing sectors, as well as government organizations. The COE-APS will initially focus on markets that include Japan, India, Singapore, Philippines and Hong Kong, then gradually expand services throughout APAC and other regions.

    With the global big data and analytics market expected to reach $210 billion by 2020, NEC plans to organize a team of 100 professionals within the first few years, to support these operations.

    Hadoop alone is expected to reach US$50.2 billion by 2020. With the industry already facing a shortage in talent, specifically in Hadoop and analytics areas, the establishment of the COE-APS will help NEC to leverage India’s strong talent base.

    In recent years, the exponential growth in data processing is straining the capabilities of conventional databases and data warehouse solutions. With the advent of big data & analytics solutions, data is comprehensively and reliably analysed, thereby enabling customers to make well-informed decisions at the right time.

    In addition, the COE-APS will leverage the computational power and scalability of NEC’s specialized hardware for big data & analytics in order to flexibly handle the ever increasing demand for storage and computation by Hadoop.

    NEC sets long-haul subsea cable record

    Japan’s NEC has announced it has become the first vendor to achieve a transmission capacity of over 50Tbps over a distance greater than 10,000km using a single optical fiber.

    The new development could pave the way for significantly faster subsea cables spanning trans-Pacific distances, helping the industry meet surging traffic demands in the APAC region.

    NEC has demonstrated a speed of 50.9Tbps over a more than 11,000km span of cable using new C+L band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) technology. The company said the performance translated to a record-breaking capacity of 570 petabits per second per kilometer.

    To push the capacity of the cable to close to the Shannon Limit – the spectral efficiency limit of optical communications, NEC researchers developed a new multilevel, linear and nonlinear constellation optimization algorithm.

    With this algorithm, NEC has achieved an optimized 32 quadrature amplitude modulation (32QAM) constellation with a higher nonlinear capacity limit and an unprecedented spectral efficiency over a trans-Pacific distance.

    In addition, NEC researchers developed a new bi-directional amplifier design to help maximize the capacity per fiber pair by reducing effective noise and device complexity.

    NEC, Netcracker hold joint trial optical fibre network

    NEC and Netcracker Technology have successfully conducted a trial, in collaboration with K-Opticom, for a system combining NFV and 10G-EPON technologies.

    The companies said the trial verified for the first time ever that virtualized customer premises equipment (vCPE) can be successfully applied to 10Gbps Internet connections.

    K-Opticom provides telecommunications services based on its independent optical fiber network. The company operates the “mineo” mobile phone service as a MVNO, and “eo denki,” an electric power retailing service for household use.

    VCPE provides CPE and other top-layer functions, such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Network Address Translation (NAT), from data centers via the Internet.

    Based on the results of this trial, further trials are being planned in preparation for the full-scale application of vCPE to 10Gpbs Internet services.

    Takamitsu Fukunaga, SVP for K-Opticom, said communication traffic volumes for home-use connections are increasing year by year, and K-Opticom estimates that these traffic volumes will continue to grow.

    “As a result, we are considering the provision of a 10Gbps service. We are engaged in continual efforts together with NEC to enable us to offer this service to our customers as soon as possible,” the executive said.

    NEC senior vice president Shigeru Okuya claimed the trial with K-Opticom is the industry’s first of its kind to validate that vCPE can be applied to 10G-EPON.

    “Moving forward, we will continue to proactively advance the development of solutions that contribute to the improvement of service quality for K-Opticom, and to make use of these results in providing SDN/NFV solutions globally,” Okuya said.

    NEC updates postal automation system for Hongkong Post

    In recent years, Hong Kong has witnessed a rise in the number of postal items addressed in traditional Chinese characters. This has in turn boosted the need for automated sorting and processing of addresses written in traditional Chinese characters in addition to those handwritten or printed in English.

    This new function has been introduced to 15 systems delivered to Hongkong Post by NEC on several occasions since 2008 that are currently in operation at the Central Mail Centre in Kowloon Bay. The introduction of this function enables the automatic sorting and processing of up to 564,000 postal items with addresses written in traditional Chinese characters per hour, thereby contributing to the improvement of Hongkong Post’s operational efficiency.

    NEC has been doing business with Hongkong Post for approximately 30 years since the postal operator’s introduction of a postal automation system in the latter half of the 1980s. The introduction of this function was made possible by the high acclaim NEC has received over the years for its achievements and technological capabilities.

    NEC began developing its postal automation system business in 1961, and has since then delivered systems to postal operators in more than 50 countries around the world. In Japan, domestic postal operators have utilized a function for reading and sorting addresses written in Chinese characters as part of postal automation processing since the 1980s. The introduction of this function by Hongkong Post was made possible by applying the wealth of knowhow NEC has developed in Japan over the years in reading and sorting addresses written in Chinese characters. Moreover, it has resulted in increased efficiency and a reduction in the amount of time needed for processing.

    NEC wins deal with Philippines public broadcaster

    NEC Philippines signed a contract to provide digital terrestrial TV equipment for the People’s Television Network (PTNI), the public broadcasting service for the Republic of the Philippines.

    This contract supports the expansion of digital terrestrial TV broadcasting in the Philippines, which has been gaining momentum since November 2013, when the country adopted the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting Technologies (ISDB-T) standard.

    Under this contract, PTNI is scheduled to introduce digital terrestrial TV transmitters and compression multiplexers across six locations in the Philippines by July 2017.

    NEC is providing total support for the introduction of these units, including their provision, installation, and the training of personnel.

    The equipment that NEC is slated to provide features some of the world’s highest levels of power efficiency, and is highly evaluated for superior reliability in the broadcasting field.

    “NEC is proud to be working with PTNI to expand the delivery of high-quality broadcasting to a larger audience in the Philippines,” said Elizabeth Pangan, president of NEC Philippines.

    “As part of NEC’s focus on providing Solutions for Society, this equipment will help to ensure that broadcasting and access to information is reliably maintained, especially during times of emergency, such as when powerful storms strike the region,” said Pangan.

    NEC began providing digital terrestrial TV transmitters for international markets in 1998, when it provided equipment for the world’s first commercial digital terrestrial broadcasting service in the United Kingdom. Since then, NEC has shipped more than 4,500 transmitters to over 50 countries throughout the world.

    NEC pushes interoperability of smart city tech

    NEC Laboratories Europe has teamed up with four other ETSI members to initiate a new ETSI Industry Specification Group on Context Information Management (ISG CIM), together with the Open & Agile Smart Cities (OASC) organization.

    The ISG CIM will specify open standards for the context information management layer, running “on top” of IoT platforms, enabling implementation of context-aware behavior in smart applications.

    This context information management layer accesses and updates information coming from different sources (IoT networks and information systems) that comprise the semantics of information, including data source, time of validity, ownership and many more.

    This will extend the interoperability of applications, helping smart cities to integrate their existing services and enable new third-party services.

    Cities are striving to use digital services to advance the quality of life of their residents, the efficiency of their operations, the growth of their economies and to increase their sustainability.

    At the moment, telecommunication systems, city infrastructure databases, car traffic management systems, and new Internet of Things (IoT) solutions all have their own specifications, and smart cities are held back by lack of interoperability for exchange of information between these platforms — which the new ISG CIM aims to overcome.

    A focus of the group will be collaboration with other standardization activities in related areas, including ETSI TC SmartM2M and ETSI PP oneM2M. Groups such as EIP-SCC, W3C or ITU-T, and open source IoT software platforms such as FIWARE and OM2M will be closely consulted.

    The goal is to interoperate and to re-use existing work as much as possible. The ISG CIM work is intended to align with the EU’s standardization policies for the Digital Single Market.

    The five ETSI members of the new ISG CIM are Easy Global Market, imec, NEC, Orange and Telefonica. Beyond the initial focus of smart cities, the approach will be transferable to other applications, such as smart agriculture and smart industry.

    Organizations from all areas are welcome to join the ISG CIM initiative — non-ETSI as well as ETSI members, including research organizations, software houses and system integrators, SMEs, industrial partners, city groups and other stakeholders.

    Telkom contracts NEC for new subsea cable

    Indonesia’s PT Telkom has contracted NEC to build a cable system connecting six of the nation’s large islands with Singapore.

    The Indonesia Global Gateway Cable System will link the islands of Sumatra, Batam, Java, Bali, Kalimantan and Sulawesi.

    As well as providing enhanced connectivity between nine major Indonesian cities, the cable will link to Singapore and provide direct connectivity with two international subsea cables that land in Europe and the US respectively.

    The 100Gbps, eight wavelength, four fiber pair cable system will span around 5,300km in total. It is scheduled for completion in early 2018.

    “NEC is honored to be selected once again by Telkom as the supplier of an optical fiber submarine cable system, the advanced 100Gb/s IGG system,” NEC general manager for submarine networks Toru Kawauchi said.

    “Since first building an optical fiber submarine cable system for Telkom in 1991, NEC has continuously helped to expand Indonesia’s domestic connectivity, the Papua Cable System (SMPCS) being the latest such contribution.”

    The Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System connects eight provinces in eastern Indonesia – East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, North Maluku, North Sulawesi, Papua, Southeast Sulawesi, South Sulawesi and West Papua.

    The nine cities that will be connected via the IGG system are Dumai, Batam, Jakarta, Madura, Bali, Makassar, Bilikpapan, Takaran and Manado.

    NEC in Japan and NEC Technologies India have established the “OSS Technology Center,” an organization specializing in technical support related to the use of open source software (OSS).

    The new organization began operations July 1, with approximately 50 staff based out of NTI, consisting of experienced OSS engineers who are well-versed in OSS solution architecture, as well as essential software development and support capabilities.

    The OSS Technology Center aims to strengthen the organizational structure for supporting global enterprises in building systems based on OSS, to reinforce collaboration with international OSS vendors and to provide rapid technical support to users who construct systems operated globally using OSS.

    Moreover, the new organization will actively carry out development of new network functions related to Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and application platform functions, such as container and Platform as a Service (PaaS).

    All of these are part of the OSS Technology Centre’s OpenStack-based development activities, in addition to its contributions to making source codes openly available by providing them to the OSS community.

    In recent years, the need for enterprises to capitalize on OSS, particularly OpenStack, in cloud computing, big data computing and SDN/NFV, has become increasingly pronounced.

    Also, in terms of next-generation ICT technologies, there are heightened expectations towards OSS applications in areas related to Systems of Engagement (SoE) and Internet of Things (IoT).
