Pomelo to absorb Central Group’s Looksi

Online fashion label Pomelo has completed a deal with Thailand’s Central Group Looksi – previously Zalora – to absorb the online platform.

Pomelo will add a variety of key international brands currently on Looksi to Pomelo’s app and website, including Adidas, Aldo, Havaianas, Topshop, Guess, Levi Jeans, and Nike.

“Looksi has been serving Thai fashion e-commerce shoppers since its founding as Zalora in 2012,” said David Jou, CEO and co-founder of Pomelo. “This deal will accelerate Pomelo’s evolution to become a multi-brand fashion platform for fashion lovers all across Southeast Asia.”

Central Group will remain committed to driving fashion and lifestyle omnichannel retail sales, said a spokesperson.

As part of the deal, Looksi will no longer operate its app and website and instead join the Pomelo ecosystem. Looksi’s social-media channels will also transition to Pomelo.

Formerly holding senior roles with lingerie chain 6ixty8ight in Hong Kong and with H&M, Heikenfeldt is now responsible for Pomelo’s retail division and is expected to further develop the brand’s omnichannel strategy, establishing seamless experiences across its retail network and online platform.

Heikenfeldt has more than 10 years of experience in strategic development and refining strategies to enhance the retail experience across various fashion brands, and specializes in expansions into emerging markets.

“Southeast Asia is an incredibly fast-growing, unique market with so much potential,” said  Anders Heikenfeldt. “I’m excited to be a part of this journey as we continue to expand Pomelo’s retail footprint across the region and provide customers with an innovative, omnichannel shopping experience.”

  • Pomelo Bangkok store network expands

    Pomelo Bangkok store network expands

The Pomelo Bangkok network is growing fast as the omnichannel fashion-tech brand opens an outlet in Central Rama 3, with two more planned this year.

The second of its slated store openings in the last quarter of this year, the launch follows the opening of Pomelo’s Central Rama 9 store on October 1, and precedes the launch of its stores at Zpell and Central Ladprao on November 22 and in mid-December respectively.

The opening of the Pomelo Bangkok stores are in line with the brand’s plans to create more physical touchpoints for consumers. Pomelo is seeking to deliver an integrated retail experience that allows customers to shop from an extensive catalog at home while still having the option to try on their choices so as to make informed purchasing decisions.

The brand now intends to provide consumers with a seamless experience both online and offline by offering customer service processes such as fittings and returns more efficiently,

The new stores will feature the brand’s “Pomelo Pick Up” and “In-Store Mode” services. Pomelo Pick Up allows customers to try on their online purchases and pay for the items that fit best. In-Store Mode gives customers the option to either pick up and pay for their orders directly, book a fitting room, or receive updates on their queue status

Pomelo plans extra 100-strong store expansion in Thailand, Singapore

Fashion-tech brand Pomelo plans to launch 100 additional Pomelo Partner stores by December on the back of a US$52 million Series C fundraising.

The brand is intending to solidify its omnichannel retail presence in Asia, starting with Thailand.

Pomelo Partner stores function as pick-up locations where customers can have their Pomelo items delivered, try on the items and pay only for what they choose to take home. The stores target a demographic of 25 to 34, and are located in convenient suburban locations such as cafes, salons, fitness studios, florists and even other clothing stores frequented by its customers.

“Creating the best omnichannel retail experience means integrating our products with customer lifestyles, and the first 35 Partners in Thailand allow us to be where our customers live, work and play,” said Pomelo CEO and co-founder David Jou. “The growth of this network in the coming months makes returns easier and allows customers to try on and pay for only products they love with ease at a location nearest to them.”

The Pomelo Partner store network is set to grow from the current 35 in Thailand to 100-strong come the end of the year. It also plans to cover all provinces in Thailand and then Singapore in preparation for further international expansion; it currently seeks Pomelo Partner store potentials in Singapore and looks to launch the first partner store in the territory by early next year.

Currently, Pomelo’s nine retail stores and nine pickup locations across Thailand are strategically located in high-traffic urban locations.

Pomelo secures US$52 million investment for expansion

Leading omnichannel fashion company Pomelo has secured US$52 million in funding, making it the first Thai startup to raise a Series C funding round.

Investors include Central Group, Provident Growth Fund, InterVest Star SEA Growth Fund, Andre Hoffman, Toivo Annus, Lombard Private Equity, Ambient Sound Investments OU and The Luxembourg Company Deverel.

After raising US$19 million in its Series B round in November 2017, Pomelo has expanded into Hong Kong and Malaysia, grown gross merchandise volume seven-fold, launched eight physical stores in Thailand and opened a flagship store in the heart of Orchard Road. The brand has expanded its product offering further, launching categories like Purpose, an eco-friendly collection, Beet cosmetics and Pomelo Man, its menswear label.

“This is a disruptive time for omnichannel in Asia,” said Provident Growth Fund founding partner Michael Aw. “Pomelo is in a unique position because of its vertically integrated model and innovative technical abilities. We are confident they will lead the way in fashion across Southeast Asia and beyond.”

Using direct-to-consumer technology, Pomelo has been involved in omnichannel fashion since its launch in 2013.About 30 per cent of orders are delivered through its Pomelo Pick-up channel, which allows customers to try before they buy.

“Pomelo is much more than an online fashion brand,” said Pomelo CEO David Jou. “As a fashion-tech company, we are developing a proprietary catalogue of innovative technologies that will allow us to unlock significant hidden value that exists in the branded fashion business today. Everywhere we look, we see opportunities for innovation to reinvent how things are done to create better products, better serve customers, and maximise omnichannel productivity and efficiency.

“Fashion is as relevant today as ever and we are excited to chart a unique path forward in an effort to reinvent what it means to be a fashion brand.”

Co-founder Casey Liang said technology has always been a big focus for the company, which will be looking at big data and AI for pricing and design, as well as e-commerce personalisation in the future.

“We want to integrate the omnichannel experience even deeper by connecting the Pomelo universe with the customer through a proprietary tech stack. Additionally, we would like to further expand our supply chain automation platform, Henry.”

  • Pomelo Purpose range now features recycled PET fabrics

Pomelo Purpose range now features recycled PET fabrics

Omnichannel fashion brand Pomelo has released a third collection for its permanent sustainable line Purpose.

Seeking to lead the sustainability charge in the Southeast Asian fashion industry, the brand will be introducing Recycled PET (RPET) material to its Pomelo Purpose production processes for the first time.

As with the brand’s previous Pomelo Purpose collection, which placed a focus on clothing made exclusively from organic fabrics, dyes and cruelty-free materials, this collection intentionally incorporates eco-friendly practices from within the supply chain. Aiming to bring awareness to the importance of building sustainable fashion futures, the latest addition to the Purpose line is produced using RPET material and organically-sourced fabrics including linen, cotton, and natural dye.

RPET material, which is obtained from EcoMax, one of the few Asian suppliers of environmentally-friendly renewable fabric, is made from 100-per-cent post-consumer PET bottles that would otherwise enter landfills or pollute natural habitats. By incorporating RPET material into the production of Purpose pieces, Pomelo hopes to create higher-quality, lasting pieces that ease production pressures on finite natural resources.

Pomelo is encouraging its customers to drop off used clothing at its select partnered locations and offline stores, including the newly-opened Singapore flagship store at 313@Somerset. Pomelo Purpose shoppers can also schedule free pick-ups by scanning a QR code stitched into their Purpose products. All collected clothing is then redistributed to underprivileged partner communities, organisations and charities in Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia.

“Purpose by Pomelo has led the way for the fashion industry in the region to adopt environmentally-friendly practices through sustainable materials and processes,” said Pomelo CEO David Jou. “With this launch, we are hoping to make an even bigger impact by providing all Pomelo shoppers an opportunity to start their recycling journey using our free pick up service. We’re very excited to continue bringing innovation to this very important topic.”

From now until September 5, all Pomelo online customers in Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia will be able to book a free pick-up for up to 3kg of used clothing via the Pomelo App. After the promotional period, free pick-ups will be limited to first-time Pomelo Purpose shoppers only.

  • Pomelo Singapore flagship opening

    Pomelo Singapore flagship opening

Fast-fashion company Pomelo has launched a Singapore flagship store at 313@somerset.

The largest Pomelo store to date, and the first outside of its native Thailand, the store boosts the online-to-offline brand’s Southeast Asian presence to nine outlets. The firm’s regional expansion represents a bid to apply its business model to the Southeast Asian fashion and lifestyle industry.

The more than 6000sqft Singapore flagship will house Pomelo’s full catalog of 8000 products across different lines. Pomelo’s first cosmetics line, Beet, launched in April 2019, will also be sold at the store. The Singapore store will also stock collections tailored to local tastes, including seasonal collections for Ramadan, Christmas, and Chinese New Year.

“Delivering the best customer experience has always been a key tenet of our business, and what works for one market may not necessarily work for another,” said Pomelo Fashion CEO David Jou. “Our research shows that Singaporeans shop very differently from Thais, with workwear, modest wear, occasionwear and beachwear being particularly popular in Singapore. Responding to this consumer demand, we have made it a point to stock these styles in our Singapore store.”

While Pomelo has already served the Singapore market for six years, the flagship store rounds out Pomelo’s omnichannel strategy, offering customers a seamless online-to-offline experience across desktop, mobile and offline channels.

“Our omnichannel strategy is built upon our ability to provide a variety of retail options,” said Jou. “Features like Pomelo Pick Up, which allow customers to try on their online purchases and only pay for what they take home have proven to be extremely successful in Thailand. As a fashion brand with tech DNA that places customer experience at the forefront, we’re excited to finally launch a core tech-driven Pomelo offering to better meet the needs of our Singapore shoppers.”

Under the Pomelo Pick Up system, customers looking to pick up their online orders can do so by scanning a QR code at a self-service kiosk before proceeding to a fast lane to collect their packages. To check the fit, they can then try on the items they have picked out in a fitting room booked on in-store mini iPads.

  • Pomelo Fashion boosts revenue by 5x with in-house tech stack forstreamlining vertical supply chain

Pomelo Fashion boosts revenue by 5x with in-house tech stack forstreamlining vertical supply chain

Omnichannel fast fashion company Pomelo builds a proprietary in-house technology stack to enable the seamless management of a complex vertical supply chain across its multiple locations and labels. This technology stack was developed to meet Pomelo’s changing logistical
needs as it’s business model evolved from one based on private label sourcing to one that is fully vertically-integrated, allowing for control over every aspect of launching, building, and scaling a fashion brand.

Named Henry after Henry Ford, who popularized the modern assembly line for mass production, Pomelo’s solutions stack forms the common foundation of its building and scaling strategy, and integrates all aspects of its processes from design, manufacturing, content creation, retailing (in-app, online, and in-store) to inventory optimization. Henry is used in Pomelo’s multiple labels and categories including Pomelo, PM, Alita, and BEET across a manufacturing base spanning Southeast Asia and China.

“Our competitors are still using spreadsheets and paper purchase orders to manage a highly complex system of product development, manufacturing, and omnichannel retailing. As a fashion company with tech DNA, we’re building, from the ground up, a brand-new tech stack for today’s digital world that incorporates the latest in machine learning, big data, and automation,” says Lloyd Lin, Regional Vice President of Production. “We have always been focused on technology as a means to innovate key areas of the business, including our supply chain.”

Managing Fashion Supply Chains in a Digital World Pomelo’s tech stack started as a simple back-end inventory tracker in 2015. Today, 4 years on, Henry is now capable of tracking the entirety of Pomelo’s supply chain in real-time and functions as the brand’s control center. It accurately manages profit margins and provides data-driven insights and analytics on customers’ purchase behaviors that simplify the design and purchasing teams’ buying decisions. With Henry’s help, Pomelo, and their customers, in turn, have enjoyed significant costs-savings.

In the same vein, Pomelo’s supply chain has also seen further streamlining and innovation in 2018. The samples production process, essential to every new launch of which Pomelo has three weekly, is a long process involving multiple iterations and external vendors. In order to reduce material waste, production costs and time spent, Pomelo’s newly established samples lab automates the process of sample production. Managed entirely in-house, the lab is customized for Pomelo products, allowing for better quality control. In 2019, Pomelo plans to put in place a bidding process that allows production partners to bid on orders in their areas of specialization to further optimize the supply chain.

The trailblazing startup, which terms itself a Digitally Native Vertical Brand (DNVB), focuses on innovating key areas of its business, like the supply chain, through technology. The results of Pomelo’s optimization push speak for themselves: in 2018, Pomelo dramatically expanded its range across labels by more than five times, and its total revenues by nearly the same amount.

Pomelo’s technology team is primarily based in Bangkok, but also has developed resources in China and India. “The rate at which we continue to improve our technology is a long-term competitive advantage we are very excited about, and ultimately a key differentiator for Pomelo. We will continue investing in and strengthening our team, as well as our technology stack to ensure that we are setting the standard for how an omnichannel fashion brand anchored in today’s digital world should be managed.” says Pomelo CEO David Jou.

“For consumers today, beauty is integral to style,” said David Jou, Pomelo CEO, signalling the company is taking “a step in the right direction”.

“As a fashion brand that wants to offer women everywhere their best look to become their best selves, we cannot ignore that.”

With Beet, Pomelo provides another touchpoint for a seamless customer experience that prioritises modern consumers’ demand for convenience.

Last month, Pomelo launched its second sustainable collection, Purpose.

Pomelo Fashion leads with Purpose, first permanent line where sustainability meets tech

Fast fashion omni-channel retailer Pomelo became the first Southeast Asian online fashion brand to launch a permanent sustainable line, Purpose. Following the successful launch of its first standalone Purpose collection in 2018, the brand will launch three collections this year featuring pieces crafted entirely from ethically sourced fabrics, including organic cotton from the Better Cotton Initiative, and natural color dyes.

From production to packaging, the Purpose line intentionally incorporates eco-friendly practices. Purpose pieces are made exclusively in factories that have undergone an independent audit by Pomelo to ensure that its products are made in humane and safer working conditions. Customers will also receive their Purpose products in packaging that uses 60% less plastic.

Commenting on the importance of building a sustainable fashion future, David Jou, CEO of Pomelo Fashion says, “Pomelo’s Purpose collection is so named because it provides us with a meaningful opportunity to lead the way by bringing sustainable materials and processes to the fashion industry and the increasingly eco-conscious consumers in the region.” To this end, the Purpose collection is made from organic fabrics and colors, and will also incorporate cruelty-free materials such as vegan suede and recycled shell buttons.

Through technology, PM helps customers find what they call their unique ‘Perfect Fit’. With key items like t-shirts, chino pants, hoodies, and accessories, the brand will become a one-stop shop for every man’s daily fashion needs. PM takes it up a notch by providing all men with a ‘Man Lounge’ complete with free Wi-Fi, USB charging stations, and video games, all of which can be enjoyed by customers and everyone else alike.

For customers that download and register on the App – the brand will be giving away free t-shirts in their ‘perfect size’. The first collection consists of wardrobe essentials such as t-shirts, pants, outerwear, and accessories in expansive size options, available at the stores for a fitting and to be purchased on the Pomelo App. Going further, PM would roll out monthly drops composed of not only everyday essentials, but eventually branching out to polos, shirts, and a mix of both formal and informal styles.

David Jou, Pomelo’s CEO, commented: “With PM we wanted to re-imagine men’s fashion. We wanted something classic, yet fresh and contemporary, combined with the latest technology to create an effortless shopping experience.”
