  • Royal Enfield Sets Up Dutch Hub For EU Expansion

Royal Enfield Sets Up Dutch Hub For EU Expansion

Royal Enfield has set up a new hub in the Netherlands and has plans to open another warehouse in Europe, either in France or Germany, with an eye on strengthening its supply chain across Europe. According to reports, Royal Enfield’s parent company Eicher Motors Ltd has already set up the Dutch arm to reduce its dependency on the UK, after Brexit made it more difficult to move parts to mainland Europe. The brand is also in talks to establish a warehouse, likely to be either in France or Germany, to speed up the supply of products like spare parts and branded merchandise.

Eicher Motors has invested 500,000 Euros (approximately Rs. 4.5 crore) into the new unit, called Royal Enfield Europe BV. According to Arun Gopal, Royal Enfield’s international head, who is quoted in a news report, the brand’s business is growing quickly in the EU, and a new warehouse will cut lead times by two weeks from 90 days. Royal Enfield plans to start with one warehouse for non-motorcycle products and is in talks with logistics specialists in the EU to manage its range. Germany and France are potential countries for the new warehouse, although no decision has been made as yet.

In recent years, Royal Enfield has been increasingly pushing across global markets, with exports being a prime focus of its business strategy. In 2023, the company inched closer to the 1 million sales mark, and over the last decade the company has performed above expectations. Although the bulk of Royal Enfield’s motorcycle sales still come from the domestic market, exports have been steadily increasing but still constitute less than 10 percent of overall sales.

With the new 350 cc J-series platform, the 650 Twins, the Himalayan 411, and the current Himalayan 450, Royal Enfield has streamlined its entire product line-up in recent years to be global products, which will be offered on sale around the world. Clearly, with its origins in the UK, the European market may offer more potential for the brand’s growth and better supply chain and footprint presence may be a step in the right direction.

  • Royal Enfield Electric Concept Motorcycle Photo Leaked

Royal Enfield Electric Concept Motorcycle Photo Leaked

Electric mobility is the future and almost all vehicle manufacturers in India moving towards that future in some capacity. And this includes Royal Enfield as well. The Chennai-based legacy brand has already said that it has begun testing EV prototypes in India and other parts of the world. While so far not much was known about the EV, now an image of the company’s first electric concept motorcycle has leaked online by Autocar. The photo, which gives us a partial look at the profile of the electric concept bike, tells us that it will be called ‘electrik01’.

Visually, Royal Enfield’s electric concept motorcycle comes with a neo-vintage-themed design and styling accentuating the long, slender fuel-tank-like structure, while the front suspension looks like girder forks. However, we also see some modern elements like alloy wheels. The frame of the bike, which extends over the tank like an exoskeleton, is treated in brushed silver and offers a good contrast to the British racing green hue of the tank, which bares the brand logo. And finally, there is also a very retro-looking round headlamp, which we expect will get LED lighting.

In the photo, you will also get to see a portion of the battery pack, which is covered by an all-black housing. Having said that, it’s too soon to speculate anything about the technical specifications, like the battery and range, of the electric motorcycle.

As for the timeline for the electric motorcycle’s arrival, we believe it’s still a few years away. In fact, even when we consider the modern internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes from Royal Enfield, the motorcycles are put through extended periods of testing and development. And we believe the company would like to check all boxes before it’s ready to show even the prototype model. Having said that, it has been reported that the company will introduce a new vertical, maybe a new brand, for its electric vehicles and aims to launch its first EV by 2025.

Furthermore, Royal Enfield is yet to formally announce any investment plan for EVs in particular. However, its parent company, Eicher Motors, have applied for the PLI scheme under the champion OEM category, which confirms that it will invest Rs. 2,000 crore over a period of five years. The investment is likely to be used for beefing up its EV technology and focus on gathering resources for its electric two-wheelers.

  • Royal Enfield Classic 350 Launched In Australia, New Zealand

Royal Enfield Classic 350 Launched In Australia, New Zealand

Royal Enfield is expanding the presence of the new Classic 350 across the world, and the Asia Pacific region, and has now launched the all-new Classic 350 in Australia and New Zealand. The new model will be available in four variants, the Halcyon, Classic Signals, Classic Dark and Classic Chrome, each offering unique color options and styling options. In recent days, the Classic 350 has been launched in the UK, and the Philippines, and now the company has launched its most popular model in Australia and New Zealand.

Pricing for the 2022 Royal Enfield Classic 350 range will start at AUD 7,990 (approximately ₹ 4.21 lakh) in Australia for the Halcyon series. The Signals series has been priced at AUD 8,290 (approximately ₹ 4.37 lakh), while the Dark Series and Chrome Series will be priced at AUD 8,690 (approximately ₹ 4.58 lakh) and AUD 8,790 (approximately ₹ 4.63 lakh) respectively.

The all-new Classic 350 is the second model to be based on the same platform as the Meteor 350, with the two models sharing quite a few components, including the new J-series Royal Enfield 350 cc single-cylinder engine. The new-generation Classic 350 was launched in India last year, and gets a complete makeover, with a new, more modern engine, new chassis, updated suspension, new wheels, and brakes.

The 349 cc, the single-cylinder engine makes 20.2 bhp at 6,100 rpm, and 27 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The compression ratio has changed to 9.5:1 on the new 350 cc SOHC engine from 8.5:1 on the UCE 350 engine. The cam gears have been replaced with a timing chain, along with the SOHC system, which results in less noise and more efficient valve timings. The chain primary drive has been replaced with gear primary drive, which reduces transmission losses, and the primary balancer shaft reduces vibrations on the engine.

The legacy of the Classic dates back to 1948 with the Royal Enfield Model G2, the first to have swinging arm rear suspension on a full production motorcycle. The Model G2 served as a strong design inspiration for the hugely popular Classic 500 and Classic 350 launched in 2008. The Classic 350, in fact, went on to become the highest-selling Royal Enfield model since then, accounting for 70-80 percent of the brand’s sales over the past decade or so. Even now, the Classic 350 accounts for 60-70 percent of the brand’s overall sales, but so far, these numbers have been limited to the domestic market of India.

In the 12 years since the modern Royal Enfield Classic was first launched, it has built a legacy of its own, selling over 3 million (30 lakh) motorcycles. The Classic has also emerged as the motorcycle that redefined the middleweight motorcycling space and spawned the revival of Royal Enfield. And this time around, with the new Classic 350, Royal Enfield is positioning it as a global product, hoping to repeat some of its commercial success around the world.

Eicher Motors Limited (EML), the parent company of Royal Enfield, has announced its audited consolidated financial results for the second quarter of FY 2021-22. For the quarter from July to September 2021, Eicher Motors Limited’s consolidated net profit rose 9 percent to ₹ 373 crore, as against ₹ 343 crore in the same period last year. The company recorded total revenues of ₹ 2,250 crore, up by 5.4 percent as compared to ₹ 2,134 crore in the same period a year ago. Royal Enfield sold 1,23,515 motorcycles during the quarter, a decline of 17.2 percent from 1,49,120 motorcycles sold over the same period in FY 2020-21.

The Royal Enfield Meteor 350 along with the 650 Twins and the Himalayan have been spearheading the company’s push in the international markets.

The silver lining was that Royal Enfield ended the quarter with best ever performance in international markets for the second successive quarter with total exports at 17,922 units, more than 132 percent increase over the 7,714 units exported in the same period last year, and almost 41 percent increase over Q2 FY 2019-20.

Commenting on Eicher Motors’ performance, Siddhartha Lal, Managing Director of Eicher Motors Ltd. said, “The second quarter of the FY 2022 saw a remarkable performance by Royal Enfield in international markets with a growth of more than 130% over the corresponding period last year. The quarter marked the launch of the all-new Royal Enfield Classic 350, one of the most awaited motorcycles from Royal Enfield this year. In a collaboration that symbolizes an amalgamation of authenticity and safety, Royal Enfield joined hands with TCX to introduce a new range of CE Certified protective riding and lifestyle shoes.

  • Royal Enfield To Witness Exit Of Key Management Personnel

Royal Enfield To Witness Exit Of Key Management Personnel

Royal Enfield is witnessing a shakedown in its top management, after Chief Executive Officer Vinod Dasari stepped down from his position in August 2021. The company’s COO B. Govindrajan has been appointed Executive Director to lead the company, and replace Dasari. Now, according to the latest reports, the company will likely see a fresh round of exits from its senior management. According to reports, Lalit Malik, the Chief Commercial Officer of Royal Enfield has already put in his papers, and Shubhranshu Singh, Global Head of Marketing is already serving his notice period.

The resignations and shakedown in Royal Enfield’s senior management comes at a crucial time when the brand is expanding in overseas markets, to grab a leadership position in the mid-size motorcycle segment. With the launch of the Royal Enfield 650 Twins three years ago, Royal Enfield has been on the product offensive and has recently launched the all-new Classic 350, built around an all-new platform with the J-Series engine also shared with the Meteor 350. The shakedown in the top management couldn’t have come at a worse time, when multiple new products are being planned, with Royal Enfield planning to introduce a new product every quarter.

In fact, other reports suggest that Royal Enfield has let go of nearly 100 employees as part of its annual performance review. The measures are being described as “right-sizing” the workforce as part of the brand’s Project Restore initiative. The initiative intends to attain a 25 percent operating margin for the brand, and average sales volumes of 50,000 units a month. In August 2021, Royal Enfield reported a 9 percent decline in monthly sales, with domestic sales slipping by 18 percent. The only silver lining is the 164 percent jump in exports, but overseas sales volumes are a meagre 6,790 units in August 2021, compared to domestic sales volumes of 39,070 units in the same month.

The coming months will be critical for Royal Enfield, as the brand struggles to find replacements for its senior management, and at the same time, go forward with its new product offensive, as well as stabilize sales volumes.

  • Royal Enfield To Launch Most Number Of Models In FY 2022

Royal Enfield To Launch Most Number Of Models In FY 2022

Royal Enfield is getting ready to launch the most number of new motorcycle models this year than ever before, and several models are planned during the current financial year. As Royal Enfield looks to strengthen its grip on the mid-size motorcycle segment, not just in India, but across the world, the company is looking to introduce several new models in FY 2022. Royal Enfield’s Classic 350 is the brand’s highest-selling model, and the company is getting ready to launch a new model of the Classic 350, based on the new Meteor 350 platform, with an all-new 350 cc engine and double-cradle frame.

During a recent conference call with analysts, Royal Enfield CEO Vinod Dasari said, “We have a very exciting pipeline. This year will probably see the highest number of new models that is seen from Royal Enfield in a year. And that is just the beginning of the pipeline.”

Over the past few months, Royal Enfield launched the all-new Meteor 350, built on a new 350 cc platform, and launched the updated Himalayan, apart from introducing new colors on the 650 Twins, the Interceptor 650, and the Continental GT 650. While Dasari did not elaborate on the new models that Royal Enfield will be launching during this financial year, the new Classic 350, and a 650 cc cruiser are expected to be introduced.

“We will continue to have one new model every quarter. Because there is a delay due to COVID right now, I don’t think we will squeeze everything in but there are some very big models coming in. We are very excited about it. We will have to do all the marketing and market preparedness for that,” Dasari added.

Royal Enfield has also trademarked several new names, like Hunter, Sherpa, Roadster, as well as Shotgun and Scram more recently. Two new cruiser models on the 650 Twins platform are expected to be introduced, while the 350 cc J-Platform of the Meteor 350 could also see a retro roadster, called the Hunter 350, apart from the new Classic 350. The Scram name could be for a production scrambler based on the 650 cc platform, while the Sherpa could be a new, lighter adventure model based on the Himalayan.

We remained agile and responded swiftly by reworking our immediate priorities and providing relief to communities as well as ensuring the safety and well-being of our employees, partners, and customers. During the year, there were challenges also on account of factors such as supply chain constraints and commodity price increase. However, demand continues to be good.

“Royal Enfield witnessed very good pick up in the second half of the year, and registered a strong performance in Q4. We have seen encouraging demand coming from rural as well as urban segments. The launch of the Meteor has been well received by consumers and has witnessed excellent response. We have also been able to significantly increase our retail market presence in India and globally through this year. The commercial vehicle industry also showed equal resilience and saw good recovery in the latter half of the year. VECV gained market share across segments. In the heavy-duty segment, VECV volume grew by 6% in FY21 compared to last year against a decline of 21% in industry volume. Overall, both at Royal Enfield and at VECV, we have managed to tide over a tough year, and despite imminent challenges that persist, we remain steadfast on our strategic long term goals.”

Royal Enfield is bullish on its range of apparel and merchandise and sees the business post healthy growth in the next couple of years, with double-digit growth figures in the financial year 2020-21. Puneet Sood, Head of Apparel Business, Royal Enfield said that the brand’s line-up of casual wear, motorcycle riding gear and accessories offers accessibility not just in price but also availability. And he says that the Royal Enfield apparel range is not just for Royal Enfield customers, but for “anybody in love with motorcycling”.

“We intend to keep growing organically. Revenue has grown over the past few years, and even during 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, we recorded double digit growth. Our apparel range is available through multiple channels, and the idea is to target anyone who is in love with motorcycling. The motorcycling community decides where we go from here, and we’ve taken feedback seriously, so you’ve seen a dedicated range of women’s riding gear, as well as customization of apparel and helmets through the Make It Yours program,” Sood said.

Over the past few months, Royal Enfield has launched brand partnerships with names like Levi’s and Knox. The Royal Enfield X Levi’s range of riding denims have been well-received in the market, and Royal Enfield followed that up with a new range of jackets and riding gear with British safety experts Knox, introducing riding jackets with Knox armour, as well as riding gloves and knee guards. But it’s not just brand partnerships, and Royal Enfield’s own range of riding gear has been well-received, not just in India, but also in overseas markets.

“We launched a new range of credible riding jackets, which are well-ventilated, and with proper safety certification, which can be used not just by our own community here in India, but everywhere around the world. Our range of mesh jackets have been well-received, and new range of riding gloves are also doing very well,” said Sood.

Royal Enfield’s apparel range is now offered across the globe in geographies wherever Royal Enfield motorcycles are offered on sale. Speaking about markets, Sood added that the response to Royal Enfield’s lifestyle range has been “amazing,” particularly in markets like Europe and Asia-Pacific. The focus, Sood adds, is to make the right products. The partnership with brands like Levi’s worked very well, and Royal Enfield is exploring more such partnerships, which will be purpose-led, and will focus on both products as well as brands.
