  • End of an Era: Iconic Singapore Gelato Shop, Tom’s Palette, to Shut Down after 21 Sweet Years

End of an Era: Iconic Singapore Gelato Shop, Tom’s Palette, to Shut Down after 21 Sweet Years

After 21 years of satisfying sweet cravings with its unique range of gelato flavors, Singapore’s beloved gelato institution, Tom’s Palette, is set to cease operations by mid to late October. The heartening announcement was made by the shop’s spokesperson in a recent video shared on social media, leaving ardent fans of the dessert establishment disheartened.

“We are regretful to announce that we can no longer sustain our dream venture,” she remarked. However, the shop is not closing its doors without leaving behind a possible lifeline. The spokesperson also announced that the business, along with its treasure trove of more than 250 recipes, is on the market for potential buyers who wish to continue the legacy.

A Legacy of Unique, Unconventional Flavors

Tom’s Palette, established in 2005, has been cherished for its eclectic range of flavors that often straddled the line between tradition and innovation. Notably, the gelato shop offered a slew of unusual flavors that took inspiration from local favorites like Hainanese kaya and nasi lemak.

The well-loved dessert shop first opened its doors at Shaw Tower, subsequently relocating to Middle Road in Bugis. The second outlet made its debut on Hougang Street in Kovan in 2024, adding accessibility for their loyal patrons.

The Unforgiving Impact of the Pandemic on Food & Beverage Businesses

Unfortunately, Tom’s Palette is the latest addition to a growing list of food and beverage establishments forced to shut down in Singapore this year. A staggering 1,777 enterprises ceased operations in the first six months of this year alone, with a record 603 businesses recorded in March, signaling the profound impact of the pandemic on the industry.

In a grim nod to the harsh reality, an artisanal chocolatier, Laurent Cafe & Chocolate Bar at Robertson Quay, had to close up shop earlier this week after a 20-year run.

Reflecting on the impending closure, the spokesperson from Tom’s Palette shared, “In April, I pondered if we were next, and sadly, despite our utmost efforts, we are next.” She added, “Though we may seem like a thriving business to many, the harsh reality is that the dessert industry only truly thrives for three hours of the day, which is an insufficient duration to cover the costs for the remaining 21 hours when business is slow.”

The updated policy will see common office days established from Monday to Thursday across support centers in Seattle and Toronto, as well as regional offices in North America, as outlined by Niccol in a recent message to partners on the company’s website.

The initiative is aimed at capitalizing on the platform’s high levels of user engagement to facilitate direct purchases within the application.

A recent update to TikTok’s privacy policy in Japan that included references to “shopping features” has stirred conjectures that the official launch might occur this month.

TikTok Shop offers an in-app shopping experience where users can purchase items during live streams or via short videos. It comes with built-in payment and checkout features, thus eliminating the need for customers to be redirected to external websites. TikTok benefits monetarily from this feature by earning referral fees from sellers who participate.

ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company based in China, has successfully implemented this feature across the United States and Southeast Asia.

In preparation for the rollout, companies are gearing up to offer support. AnyMind Group, for instance, is planning to offer data analytics tools and launch training programs for live-commerce streamers through its production unit, Grove. Shodai Fujita, Country Director for Japan at AnyMind, said, “We want to create stars and take the No 1 position in Japan.”

  • Starbucks ordered to pay $50M to customer burned by hot beverage

Starbucks ordered to pay $50M to customer burned by hot beverage

A delivery driver has won $50 million in a lawsuit after being seriously burned when a Starbucks drink spilled in his lap at a California drive-through, court records show.

A Los Angeles County jury found Friday for Michael Garcia, who underwent skin grafts and other procedures on his genitals after a venti-sized tea drink spilled instants after he collected it on Feb. 8, 2020. He has suffered permanent and life-changing disfigurement, according to his attorneys.

Garcia’s negligence lawsuit blamed his injuries on Starbucks, saying that an employee did not wedge the scalding-hot tea firmly enough into a takeout tray.

“This jury verdict is a critical step in holding Starbucks accountable for flagrant disregard for customer safety and failure to accept responsibility,” one of Garcia’s attorneys, Nick Rowley, said in a statement.

Starbucks said it sympathized with Garcia but planned to appeal.

“We disagree with the jury’s decision that we were at fault for this incident and believe the damages awarded to be excessive,” the Seattle-based coffee giant said in a statement, adding that it was “committed to the highest safety standards” in handling hot drinks.

U.S. eateries have faced lawsuits before over customer burns.

In one famous 1990s case, a New Mexico jury awarded a woman nearly $3 million in damages for burns she suffered while trying to pry the lid off a cup of coffee at a McDonald’s drive-through. A judge later reduced the award, and the case ultimately was settled for an undisclosed sum under $600,000.

Juries have sided with restaurants at times, as in another 1990s case involving a child who tipped a cup of McDonald’s coffee onto himself in Iowa.

Hermes unveils expanded Kuala Lumpur store

Hermes has opened an expanded store in The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur, which first opened nearly a decade ago.

The new store, designed by the architectural firm RDAI in Paris, was designed with a contemporary theme and includes elements of local culture and locally produced crafts.
