OneSiam Bangkok teamed up with Air Asia to lure Chinese shoppers

Bangkok’s three shopping centres grouped under the OneSiam brand, are collaborating with Air Asia to encourage more Chinese tourists to Thailand. The malls – Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and Siam Discovery – have received backing from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s Chengdu office to launch a campaign called Air Asia x OneSiam present Thailand Shopping Festival. It will run from now through to the end of the Lunar New Year celebration early next year.

The partners believe the campaign will help achieve an anticipated 15 per cent increase in Mainland Chinese tourists visiting Thailand next year.

Chinese remain the largest demographic group of tourists visiting Thailand, according to Charun Chuennaitom, director of the TAT Chengdu Office. TAT data shows that between January and August this year, an estimated 25.8 million tourists travelled to Thailand, 10 per cent more than during the same period last year. Chinese accounted for 7.7 million of those, up by 16.5 per cent.

Tanavan Arkaleephan, director of tourism department at Siam Piwat, said OneSiam is a popular destination for Chinese travellers.

“Each day there is an estimate of 150,000 to 200,000 shoppers in Siam Paragon, 120,000 to 150,000 in Siam Center and Siam Discover, separately. The ratio of Thai visitors to Chinese visitors is 60 to 40.”

He said the top five tourist sources to regularly visit OneSiam are China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore, but Chinese remain the majority group.

Tourists who between now and February 28 present an Air Asia boarding pass to One Siam staff at the Siam Paragon tourist lounge, and who follow the OneSiam WeChat account, can receive privileges and promotions from partnering brands, including vouchers from OneSiam, product samples from Pralyn, 30 per cent discounts on body massage therapy from The Beauty Art, and discount offers from Thai designer brands.

Tourists can enter to win tickets from Air Asia and shopping vouchers at OneSiam.

Air Asia offers direct flights from Bangkok to 15 destinations in China.

Nattinee Tawanchulee, director of commercial at Thai AirAsia, said as part of the collaboration, Air Asia has a surprise in store for travellers on some flights from Chongqing to Bangkok, with an in-flight fashion show showcasing special collections from Thai brands including Fri27Nov, Iconic, Kloset, Rotsaniyom, and Theatre.

IconSiam Bangkok due to open November 9

Bangkok’s massive IconSiam development will open on November 9, its developers have confirmed.

The US$1.67 billion complex being constructed on a 400-metre-long stretch of the Chao Phraya River will feature 14 flagship stores of internationally renowned brands, many of them taking space in the ultra-luxury 25,000sqm glass pavilion called IconLuxe, located next to the river and featuring the longest pillarless glass facade in the world.

The development will be home to two shopping centres, whose tenants will include 188 brands and store concepts from around the world making their debut in Thailand, including duplex maisons for luxury brands.

IconSiam CEO Supoj Chaiwatsirikul says IconSiam will represent “a completely new business model for destination development” in Thailand.

“We are committed to making IconSiam a new national landmark and an exciting global destination. We have therefore placed particular emphasis on becoming the location of choice for the flagship stores of the world’s finest brands as well as introducing many firsts and innovations at the various outlets.”

The development will comprise a 750,000sqm mega-destination featuring not only two shopping precincts, but theme parks, a museum, hotel and apartment towers.

“IconSiam will excite visitors with a rich diversity of offerings, including art and culture, in addition to extraordinary dining and shopping possibilities,” said Chaiwatsirikul. “The project is co-designed and co-activated in collaboration with enterprises of all sizes and with people from all walks of life, and the benefits of the project are shared among all parties.

“We have made every participant in IconSiam – whether they be outlets selling products, or designers and artists showcasing their creations, or even neighborhood communities helping in our operations – an inseparable part of our business model and they play a part in shaping our development.”

    Flagships line up

Flagship stores at IconSiam will include the largest Adidas Original store in Asia, H&M-owned fashion label Cos, an Aland lifestyle concept store from Korea, and local accessories brand Naraya. H&M will open a three-level store.

UK retailer JD Sports will open its first Thai store at the development and Nike’s store will be the first in Asia with a Kicks Lounge.

The retail development is anchored by Thailand’s first Takashimaya department store from Japan which plans to introduce 170 brands into the market for the first time.

Details have yet to be released about world-class restaurants and a rooftop bar planned for the complex. Besides those, IconSiam will feature seven food and beverage zones, each with a different atmosphere and concept. Tenants will include Singapore’s Jumbo seafood restaurant and Taiwan’s Harbour restaurant.

Fitness First will open its largest Thai venue yet.

    Opening festival

Chaiwatsirikul says IconSiam has budgeted THB1 billion (US$31 million) on an opening and launch festival, including extensive international communications.

“Because IconSiam will be a showcase for the very best that Thailand has to offer and serve as a platform to propel Thai brands, products, artists, artisans and Thai culture onto the global stage, we are investing heavily to make IconSiam globally visible. We want IconSiam to be a magnet for the country, capable of drawing hundreds of thousands of international and local visitors a day, and to bring honour to Thailand,” he said.

Meanwhile, the development’s two luxury residential towers remain under construction. The 70-floor, luxury Magnolia Waterfront Residences with 379 residential units is 90 per cent complete, while the 52-floor, super luxury The Residences at Mandarin Oriental Bangkok with 146 units is 80 per cent complete.

IconSiam is being developed by three Thailand companies: shopping centre operator Siam Piwat, which owns Siam Center, Siam Paragon and Siam Discovery; residential developer Magnolia Quality Development Corporation; and multinational conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group.

  • ICSC picks Siam Piwat’s ‘Siam Discovery’ as world’s best designed

ICSC picks Siam Piwat’s ‘Siam Discovery’ as world’s best designed

Bangkok’s Siam Discovery shopping centre has won the top Viva Award from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) for its “cutting-edge design”.

Siam Discovery, owned by Siam Piwat, was chosen from hundreds of projects around the world for the honour, awarded during the ICSC’s annual leasing convention in Las Vegas.

Siam Piwat CEO Chadatip Chutrakul said the award proves “Thai creativity and collaboration can take the country’s flag to the top, even on the world stage”.

“Siam Piwat’s strategy for growth is to do things in retail and retail development that have never been done before in Thailand or even the world. We are committed to being a thought-leader on the global stage through co-creation with retailers and other partners in our developments.”

The ICSC’s Viva Awards are presented annually, judged by an independent jury to “recognise the best-of-the-best in the world of retail development”. The judges praised Siam Discovery for being transformative.

“Siam Discovery is a highly imaginative project that gets away from individual stores and walls and into an immersive open experience. It is the first mall development that makes retail an experience as well as the spaces in between being exciting and stimulating. Siam Discovery brings the latest digital technology offerings to create an interactive and experiential retail environment,” the judges agreed.

Chutrakul described the centre as “a game-changing, hybrid retail destination where products, services, and activities are brought together in a way that suits the lifestyle of millennials”.

“Products are grouped without the constraints of a particular brand or school of design, in a way that puts the needs of the customer at the centre. Millennials want to discover their own style while exploring new experiences with other people. Here, they can experiment and discover what they like and what expresses their own identity best,” said Chutrakul.

Siam Discovery opened its doors to visitors in 1997 and underwent a THB4 billion rebuild before reopening in 2016 in its new, award-winning guise.

During the past two years, Siam Discovery has won six global awards from prestigious competitions in the world of retailing, including World Retail Awards – Store Design of the Year 2017, for being world’s best designed development.

My Kitchen tablet menus allowing diners to order and pay quickly.

“It  will offer an original experience unlike anywhere else,” says the spokesperson.

  • Siam Discovery Launched Year-End Campaign to Spread the Love and Spirit of Sharing

Siam Discovery Launched Year-End Campaign to Spread the Love and Spirit of Sharing

Siam Piwat, the owner and operator of Siam Paragon, Siam Center and Siam Discovery, invested over 30 million baht in the greatest year-end marketing campaign, which integrates the customer-centric strategy. Interpreting the festive season as the time when people send their love and good wishes to others, the Company launched “Citizen of Love: It’s time to Give Good Love” campaign.

The shoppers will not only find a wide array of gift items for themselves and loved ones, but also enjoy a big promotion that serves the government’s Shop for the Nation campaign. To add the sentimental value to the campaign, Siam Discovery hosts an art exhibition displaying the genius of the late King Bhumibol, including his great love and generosity for his citizen. In response to the royal wish on endless giving, Siam Discovery will organize “Gifts for Them” CSR activity that gives the gifts to 300 children in Community Children Foundation (CCF) under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. During the festive season, the shopping center expected to welcome 80,000 – 100,000 Thai and foreign shoppers a day.

Year-End Campaign: “Citizen of Love: It’s time to Give Good Love”

Mr. Charnchai Cherdchoowongthanakorn, Senior Executive Vice President – Retail Business Development, Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., said, ” In each year, December is considered the high season with the greatest spending. However, the shopping sentiment this year differs from the past. Siam Discovery, considering itself as a friend of shoppers, understood their feelings and translated the season of joy into the joy of sharing. It therefore hosts the integrated campaign called “Citizen of Love: It’s time to Give Good Love”. Siam Discovery started from creating its ambience, in which encourages everyone to participate under the concept of ‘exploration, creation, and cultivation’. In addition, it holds an art exhibition to commemorate the talent of H.M. the late King, who worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life of his people. He did this out of love and wanted nothing in return. Moreover, Siam Discovery offers Thai people a space to express their love and give the moral support to one another. The shoppers can take photos and share their love in the Living Room of Love. It also displays the art installation that presents the Royal Rainmaking Initiative Project and Reforestation Initiative Project. The exhibitions are open for the public to help them feel connected.”

Siam Discovery spent more than 30 million baht on “Citizen of Love: It’s time to Give Good Love” campaign, which includes the creation of shopping ambience, promotion and CSR activity. It expected to daily attract 80,000 – 100,000 Thai and foreign shoppers on average, with 50:50 ratio. The survey revealed that 80% of foreign tourists are Free Individual Traveler (FIT), which are considered high-quality tourists with high purchasing power.

Launching a big promotion to boost the holiday shopping in response to Shopping for the Nation campaign

Siam Piwat responds to the government’s economic stimulus policy that encourages the people to shop and use the tax invoice of December 2016 for the tax deduction. Expecting an influx of shoppers, Siam Piwat prepared the staff and equipment to facilitate the shoppers who request the formal tax invoice and to ensure the fast and convenient service.

In addition, Siam Piwat holds special promotion, to create the unique shopping experience at Siam Paragon shopping mall , Siam Center , and Siam Discovery from now – December 31, 2016. Spending at least 15,000 baht, the shoppers will receive Siam Gift Card worth 1,500 baht. VIZ cardholders and the members of Siam Discovery Mobile Application will enjoy more benefits

“Gifts for Them” CSR activity for the disadvantaged

Miss Chanisa Kaewruen, Senior  Deputy Managing Director of Siam Piwat Co., Ltd., revealed, “Besides the value-added promotion, Siam Discovery infuses the sentimental value into the customers’ mind because we believe that our customers care for the society and wish to share good things with the people around them. We therefore come up with “Gifts for Them” activity, inviting the customers to spread the joy to others by giving the gifts to 300 children in Community Children Foundation (CCF) under the Royal Patronage of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The customers can buy gift items for the children on 50% discount and Siam Discovery will subsidize the other half. We will host an event where the donors can present the gifts to the children themselves.

In preparing the product  to serve the customer demand, Siam Discovery, with the expertise in matching the right products for each lifestyle, has selected the perfect gift items for each target segment. It also displays the recommended gift items on each floor.   To increase the value to the gifts, it offers the personal gift wrapping as the customized service in addition to the regular gift wrapping service.

In “Think Giving”, Siam Discovery offers a wide variety of products from the Royal Project Foundation, PatPat shop under Chaipattana Foundation, Phufa and Doi Kham as the special gifts for special people. The event will take place on the 5th floor from now until February 19, 2017.

Customer-centric marketing focuses on capturing the customers’ interest. Siam Discovery therefore launched the marketing promotion activities that add the sentimental value to the shoppers. It expected that “Citizen of Love: It’s time to Give Good Love” campaign will not only increase the sales volume by 15 – 20%, but also make the holiday shopping more meaningful and bring the spirit of giving to this season of joy.

  • Starbucks Asia showcases local art

    Starbucks Asia showcases local art

Art is playing a major role in the store design of Starbucks Asia.

Michael Izon, director of store design in Starbucks China/Asia Pacific region, says his team works with artists, who work in a variety of mediums, to enhance stores in the Philippines and Thailand.

    Gaysorn_Starbucks_Thailand_(1)

“Sometimes we seek the help of companies that represent local artists, while other times we find artists by chance. We once discovered an artist’s work while walking the streets of Hong Kong and asked to commission his work for one of our stores,” Izon said.

Decisions about artwork occur at the beginning of the store design process.

“We call our process holistic store design because we don’t want elements like artwork to look additive, we want them integrated in the overall design and become a natural part of the store,” said Izon.

He added, art in Starbucks stores should be visually pleasing, but also informative in telling the brand’s story.

One of the artists whom Starbucks was worked with is Ella Hipolito. Known for using coffee grounds to create realistic paintings, Hipolito has created artwork for Starbucks Philippines, including one for the S’Maison Starbucks in Pasay City.

    SMaison_Starbucks_Philippines_(5)

“We wanted to highlight the work that takes place on Philippine coffee farms. Ella created a huge landscape painting on one of the walls in the store that depicts farmers harvesting coffee cherries,” Izon said.

In Thailand, as customers enter the Gaysorn Starbucks in Bangkok, they encounter a mural that represents Starbucks’ travel around the world to source coffee. The mural was created in partnership with Jeentee Baiposuwan, a local artist and graduate of Silapakorn University.

    Gaysorn_Starbucks_Thailand_(3)

    Gaysorn_Starbucks_Thailand_(4)

“Jeentee is a traditional Thai painter and used this style to develop a wonderful piece depicting the Starbucks Siren and the beginning of the Starbucks coffee journey,” said Izon.

Smaller landscape paintings featured throughout the store share the story of single origin coffees and farmers.

“Gaysorn is a premium mall, so the store has a luxurious look to it and the artwork reflects that as well,” added Izon.

    Gaysorn_Starbucks_Thailand_(2)

When Izon and team received the design brief for the Siam Discovery store in Bangkok, the vision was to showcase Starbucks global social responsibility efforts in addition to highlighting coffee.

    Siam_Discovery_Starbucks_Thailand_(2)

In the seating area of the store is Jeentee Baiposuwan’s large wire-art installation depicting 12 of Starbucks social impact initiatives.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction knowing that what we design on paper for several months, will engage customers for many years,” said Izon.

  • Siam Discovery ‘ready to rock the world’

Siam Discovery ‘ready to rock the world’

Siam Discovery in the heart of Bangkok officially opened last week – billed as a shopping centre experience like none other in the world.

And when you took a walk through the THB4 billion (US$112 million) redevelopment, for once in this industry the experience exceeded the hype.

“We are ready to rock Bangkok and rock the world,” says Chadatip Chutrakul, CEO of Siam Piwat, which owns the trio of Siam-branded malls next to the confluence of Bangkok’s downtown Skytrain lines.

They rocked our world, for sure, because there genuinely is nothing like this anywhere we’ve seen in the world. This is a centre designed to engage even the most jaded shopper. More than a collection of stores, it is a curation of brands presented in an array of environments created by Japanese designer Oki Sato and his team from Nendo in Tokyo.

    Siam Discovery Bangkok

From the brilliant white modern elegance of the Issey Miyake women’s fashion store at the entrance level to the Nendo-designed Loft fitout on the upper level – and everything in between – this is a retail destination that will wow, engage and delight.

“We hope people coming here get inspired,” says Sato. “We hope every single person who comes here is challenged.”

While there are various branded stores in the revamped Siam Discovery, they are almost incidental to the overall experience. In what marks Siam Piwat’s first foray into running its own department  store – a misnomer in this context – Sato and his team have created a series of striking merchandising areas all without walls, mixing materials and concepts, and showcasing products ranging from high-end fashion to homewares and electronics.

Complementing them are areas dedicated to revolving pop-up concepts – most of them engaging customers, others for name brands to test their mettle with the Thai consumers and tourists who will frequent this centre when it opens to the public on Saturday morning (May 28).

Women can create their own lipstick tones; there are 3D printers that can create sculptures of photographs; you can paint your own pattern prints to create your own clothes or a personalised coffee mug; you can test pilot a drone, run 500m on a treadmill to donate money to charity, or strike a pose for an Instagram post … And more – much more.

The 40,000 sqm Siam Discovery, perhaps best known to visitors to Thailand as the home of Bangkok’s Madame Tussauds wax museum, has been completely gutted over the past 12 months. Now it features six levels of experiential retail, each with its own distinct theme. Ground level is Her Lab, anchored by  Issey Miyake and featuring an assembly of mid- to high-end fashion labels including Comme des Garcons, Marimekko and Rag & Bone.

Up one floor is His Lab, a full storey of menswear, shoes and – perhaps a highlight – a “skin lab” featuring possibly the largest collection of men’s skincare and grooming products outside Tokyo. In the corner is a bespoke barber shop offering haircuts and shaving services: understated and old world.

Next level up is Streetlab, a collection of casualwear, streetwear, sportswear, shoes and accessories. Again there is a mix of shop fronts and open displays where Siam Piwat has chosen the merchandise – and displayed it imaginatively. A highlight: sunglasses on batons both rising from the floor and descending from the ceiling. To complement the sporting and fitness theme, there is a salad bar and a Boost Juice cafe.

One more floor up is Digital Lab: gadgets, techno toys, cameras, stationery, even a store selling customised motorcycle helmets (it is opening with a display of helmets owned by famous Thais, including a popular actor and the head of a major bank). This is where you can fly a drone, check out a Yamaha display featuring MotoGP-themed bikes, or relax at an unusually designed Starbucks made from recycled materials.

Creative Lab, another level up, is largely a housewares store, including Thailand’s second Habitat shop and heavily Japanese-influenced displays of homewares, ornaments and collectibles. There is a Thann Spa, most certainly its most stunning design yet, an artisan coffee roaster, Cafe Now, and a tiered stairwell designed to encourage people to chill and relax much like they would in an Italian piazza – but in air-conditioned comfort. That space will be used for demonstrations and the occasional live music event.

And on the top floor, as well as the entrance to a new Virgin Active gym, there is a toy zone, books, outdoor gear space, a cafe and more places for interactive pop-up concepts.

As with the successful redesign of the adjacent Siam Centre, Chadatip worked with brands to ensure the centre offers products not available elsewhere. So even familiar brands have one-off displays or limited-edition runs – some carrying Siam Discovery or Siam Piwat branding for the launch.

Sato says Siam Discovery is his first project in Thailand, and his most ambitious anywhere to date. From day one he worked with Chadatip’s team on how to create a flow of visitors through the building.

Instead of the original two sets of escalators, there is now only one, creating more of a sense of space in the atrium. About 220 black frames have been built to hold LCD screens and other displays to draw people to the upper levels.

“So you have vertical flow, you have horizontal flow and then you create circular flow,” says Sato.

The concept of “lifestyle laboratories” reflects the aim of creating something markedly different to a conventional mall, where brands each have dedicated rooms in planned precincts. While “curating” is a term used all too loosely in modern retail, it does seem appropriate here. Teams of people have chosen products from a variety of brands to merchandise them in a complementary fashion so people walking through the centre will be guaranteed to see something new.

“The idea is not about adding products through brands, but through different lifestyles, cultures and trends,” says Sato. “So customers can choose their own lifestyle.

“We hope people coming here will be inspired, that they find something, and that every single person who comes here is challenged.”

Shopper, retailer or mall manager: from our experience during today’s preview, all will be equally challenged by the new Siam Discovery.

Siam Discovery about to launch ‘retail revolution’

After a Bht 4000 million (US$113 million) overhaul, Siam Discovery will re-open in Bangkok this month as a self-described “hybrid retail development”.

As well as Thailand’s largest lifestyle speciality store, the complex will feature an “arena of lifestyle experiments”.

Opening on May 28, the complex is owned and run by Siam Piwat, which also has Siam Paragon, Siam Center, Paradise Park and, in a joint venture, IconSiam. This new development will be sub-branded The Exploratorium, and introduce what CEO Chadatip Chutrakul describes as a “revolutionary new retail concept”.

This concept is spread across 50,000 sqm, and senior executive vice-president Charnchai Cherdchuwongthanakorn says the company expects to double its sales per square metre as well as reinforce Siam Piwat’s reputation as a thought-leader in Thailand’s retail sector.

Siam Discovery – The Exploratorium will encourage visitors to experiment and discover what they like. Without the constraints of a particular brand or school of design, products are brought together under a single universal concept that puts customers at the centre, says the company.

Charnchai says that in its first year the eight-level complex is expected to draw 100,000 visitors a day, with a mix of 65 per Thais and 35 per cent tourists. Before the renovation the centre had 750,000 visitors a day.

There are many firsts and concept stores in the centre…

    • In a partnership with the Department of Export Promotion, Siam Discovery will feature award-winning designers in the Objects of Desire Store.
    • Nike will launch its only concept store for Southeast Asia, including a personalised embroidery service.
    • Designer Issey Miyake which have its first concept store outside of Japan, called the World of Issey Miyake and offering products for men for the first time in Thailand.
    • Home decorative brands like Hay, Kartell and Tom Dixon and Kartell will open their first concept stores in Thailand, and artists Lisa Larson and Yayoi Kusama will make their Thailand debut.
    • As well featuring designs from Tokyo Fashion Week, Siam Discovery will highlight Asian designers with brands such as Beautiful People, Discord by Yoji Yamamoto, Dressed Undressed, Factotum and Yoshio Kubo being introduced to Thailand.
    • As a world first, music magazine Billboard will have a cafe with a food-and-drink corner catered by Dean & Deluca and a live radio show.
    • An innovative retail service developed by Siam Discovery will offer customers a personal stylist and a private dressing room.
    • Tokyo Bike will offer cycling products and equipment as well as a customised bicycle fitting service and a test-ride space.
    • Starbucks Coffee will feature a coffee drip for hard-core coffee fans, plus furniture made from recycled coffee grounds.

Siam Piwat is spending Bht 300 million on the grand opening. But first, 500 members of the public will be able to experience the space first by entering an online draw. Also before the opening, a 7m-tall “Discovery Man” will go on a promotional roadshow throughout Bangkok.

A Discovery Man exhibition at the opening of Siam Discovery is being curated by Japanese designer Oki Sato, who was chief advisor for the building’s design and interior.

A highlight during the grand opening period will be Social Discovery, an interactive exhibition that is a collaboration between Siam Discovery and creative designer Black Egg. It will combine storytelling with digital technology to create an experience themed “When Obsession Becomes Identity”.
