South Korea’s Crispy Chicken n’ Tomato expands in Japan

South Korean chicken chain Crispy Chicken n’ Tomato has expanded its retail network into Tokyo, opening 10 stores in the city this month.

Besides selling at stores, Crispy Chicken n’ Tomato has also partnered with UberEats to offer “sharing brand service” which allows one store on UberEats to bear two brands at the same time.

The company introduces this type of business as unlike franchises, owners do not need to change interiors, uniforms, equipment or their existing menu.

Crispy Chicken n’ Tomato’s operator, E-mate Co, said food-delivery sales are increasing significantly in a local restaurant market that has traditionally suffered slow sales growth for various reasons.

“We are looking for restaurant partners and agencies that want to secure new profits”, said a spokesperson.

  • PepsiCo plans to buy Chinese snack Be & Cheery

PepsiCo plans to buy Chinese snack Be & Cheery

PepsiCo is poised to purchase Chinese online snack vendor Be & Cheery owned by Haoxiangni Health Food Co.

PepsiCo had proposed the Be & Cheery acquisition before the coronavirus outbreak began in China.

Valued at US$705 million, the acquisition will help PepsiCo strengthen its position in Mainland China as the company suffers slowing business growth globally.

“Be & Cheery adds direct-to-consumer capability, positioning us to capitalize on continued growth in e-commerce, and a local brand that is able to stretch across a broad portfolio of products, through both online and offline channels,” said Ram Krishnan, CEO of PepsiCo Greater China.

“We also expect to leverage Be & Cheery’s innovation and consumer insights capabilities to drive innovation in other key PepsiCo growth markets.”

The acquisition still needs approval from Haoxiangni’s shareholders and other customary conditions, according to the company.

Founded in 2003, Be & Cheery is one of the China’s largest online snack companies. Its products include nuts, dried fruits, meat snacks, baked goods and confectionery.

  • Soul Origin offers free toast

    Soul Origin offers free toast

Cafe chain Soul Origin is giving away a free slice of Vegemite toast with any coffee purchase on Wednesday, after an imprompt national debate broke out yesterday over the correct amount of Vegemite on a slice of toast.

The debate started when a customer took issue with the scant serving of Vegemite on their toast and posted an image to the Breakfast sub-Reddit page, calling the Soul Origin cafe in the Domestic Terminal of Sydney Airport that served it to them “un-Australian”.

The image was widely shared across social media, where thousands of Vegemite fans and haters weighed in.

“I’m fairly sure that’s illegal in Australia,” one Redditor commented on the original photo, while another noted, “I hate the stuff and even I know that isn’t quite enough.”

On the other side of the fence, some pushed for the option to throw the toast in the bin and replace it with peanut butter instead.

Soul Origin chief executive Chris Mavris took the frenzy in stride. He released a statement Tuesday afternoon announcing customers would receive a free slice of Vegemite toast with any coffee purchase on Wednesday, and encouraging customers to tell their local cafe exactly how they like it.

“There’s nothing more Australian than Vegemite on toast but it’s no secret that everyone has their own personal way of enjoying this national delicacy,” Mavris said.

  • Irvins Salted Egg snacks make Manila debut

Irvins Salted Egg snacks make Manila debut

Irvins Salted Egg snack store from Singapore has opened its first Philippines outlet, in Metro Manila.

On the ground floor of SM Mega Fashion Hall, the shop sells the brand’s signature snacks: salted egg fish skins and salted egg potato chips.

Owner Irvin Gunawan says he decided to open a store in the Philippines after seeing the great response to the snacks from Filipinos in Singapore. His hunch was right, as on its first day the Manila store had a queue throughout the morning.

Gunawan says other branches will come, the first before year’s end.
