Restaurant Brands sales exceed $1 billion, despite Covid-19 impact

Restaurant Brands NZ Limited reported a 19.7% increase in sales for the year ended 31 December 2021, making total sales of NZ$1.06 billion in 2021. While same-store deals stayed strong in the period, nearly NZ$100 million of the rise in annual sales came from the extra 8 months of trading from the California acquisition.

The Group released sales numbers for Q4 FY21 on Thursday, reporting total sales of NZ$284 million for the period (+5.5% on pcp). All regions posted positive same-store growth despite the present COVID-19 impact.

The Group faced COVID-19 impact strongly despite several government curbs, challenging trading atmosphere and altering consumer habits. Subsequently, RBD’s annual sales numbers surpassed NZ$1 billion, setting a robust footing for further growth in sales in all its 4 regions.

RBD-owned store numbers increased by 11 in Q4 compared to the same period in the previous year to 359. This was majorly due to the purchase of 5 KFC stores in Sydney in early 2021as well as the present construction of new Taco Bell shops in Australia and NZ.

Restaurant Brands is due to announce its year-end trading results on 28 February 2022.

  • Taco Bell makes Malaysian debut

    Taco Bell makes Malaysian debut

Indulge your guilty pleasures with time-tested regret eating when Taco Bell opens its first Malaysian outlet next month at the Cottage Walk commercial center in Cyberjaya, Selangor.

Rather than coming to Petaling Jaya as originally announced, the American fast-food chain, famous for cheap Tex-Mex cuisine often consumed to wash down a night of partying, will bring its cheese-heavy range of tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and nacho bowls to KL’s startup bros starting April 2.

“Malaysians can look forward to an exciting and globally-famous Taco Bell experience which offers a twist to familiar Mexican favorites such as tacos, burritos, and more,” Taco Bell said in a press statement. The Cyberjaya outlet will be open 10 am to 10 pm daily for dine-in and takeaway.

Of course, like most fast-food chains that have opened their doors in Malaysia, can we hope to see localized versions of Tex-Mex fare like rendang tacos as a Ramadan special, maybe?

Although the California-based chain last year named Petaling Jaya for its first location, a company representative told Coconuts over the phone that renovation of the site is not completed.

Dozens of Malaysians took to Twitter to express their glee.

“Yeay! I always see this in movies but now it’s coming to Cyberjaya,” @Thewaterlilies wrote.

Be careful what you wish for, as any of Taco Bell’s biggest fans would readily warn.

  • Taco Bell prepares to debut in two Southeast Asian markets

Taco Bell prepares to debut in two Southeast Asian markets

U.S. fast-food chain Taco Bell plans to double its international footprint with Asian markets as the main driver for overseas growth as awareness about Mexican cuisine grows, a senior executive said on Wednesday.

The Mexican-inspired Yum! Brands subsidiary, which has 7,000 restaurants in the United States, will bring its overseas store count to “over 500 units this year with a goal of getting to a thousand units internationally in the next few years,” Liz Williams, President of Taco Bell International, said in an interview.

Taco Bell retreated from Singapore in 2009. It returned to Japan in 2015 after withdrawing in the 1980s.

“Consumers weren’t ready in terms of awareness and the brand wasn’t positioned right at the time,” she said.

But thanks to a “heightened awareness” of Mexican food, broader palettes and brand exposure by millennials from more travel and technology, at least half of the new units will come from the Asia-Pacific region, she said.

Taco Bell, which sells tacos and burritos, was also adding new flavors and items for local markets citing that its signature sauce was modified for its new store in Thailand, which will open on Thursday.

“We’ve amped them up significantly,” Williams said, because research showed the sauce was not hot enough for Thai palette.

Vinegar notes were also dialed down, which were said to be unpopular with locals, Williams said.

Taco Bell, with franchise partner Thoresen Thai Agencies Pcl plans 40 stores in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy by 2022.

Last year it doubled store count in India to 32 and signed two franchise agreements for 110 new stores across Australia and New Zealand by 2024.

Taco Bell eyes four new SE Asian markets

Talks are underway to expand the Mexican-inspired fast-food restaurant chain Taco Bell into Southeast Asia.

The Thai franchisee of the chain, Siam Taco, is said to be in early talks with the franchiser to operate the brand in neighboring countries Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

Siam Taco is a joint venture between Thoresen Thai Agencies and the Mahagitsiri family-owned CM Capital. The JV currently operates five restaurants in Thailand since launching in January, with plans to grow its network to 40 restaurants within the next five years.

According to Siam Taco director Chalermchai Mahagitsiri, the huge market potential in CLMV countries is what is attracting the company to expand there.

Taco Bell Asia Pacific and Middle East MD Ankush Tuli confirmed the talks but said no final agreement has yet been reached.

Tuli said that Thailand and the rest of Asia Pacific will be the key sales drivers for Taco Bell. It is scheduled to open in Indonesia and Malaysia next year, as it intends to double its overseas network to more than 500 over the next few years.

In the Philippines, Taco Bell has six restaurants, operated by its local partner Philippine Pizza Incorporated.

“Asia-Pacific will be our big growth driver because about two-thirds of the global population comes from this region,” said Tuli.

Taco Bell launches another outlet in Auckland

The first New Zealand Taco Bell store has opened in The Brickworks at New Lynn’s LynnMall, bringing the Mexican-inspired fast-food chain to local shores.

Launching on Tuesday, the store features a mural paying homage to west Auckland designed in collaboration with local artist Natasha Vermeulen, and design agency Stanley St.

General manager for Taco Bell Clark Wilson said the business often defied the conventions of fast food, and was excited to bring its social-driven experience to New Zealand.

The store also features an open kitchen allowing customers to see their food prepared, as well as offering free wifi, charging stations, kiosk ordering, and a self-serve jukebox.

“We are delighted to finally answer the demand from our passionate fans with the opening of New Zealand’s first Taco Bell restaurant at LynnMall,” said Taco Bell managing director of Asia Pacific Ankush Tuli.

“We are excited to launch Taco Bell here in Auckland, in partnership with Restaurant Brands Group, and look forward to expanding throughout New Zealand with the goal of delighting our fans along the way.”

Franchise partner Restaurant Brands said it will launch up to 25 Taco Bell locations across New Zealand in the next five years, with the next restaurant to open in Q1 of next year.

“While a priority for us has been on first launching the brand successfully in market, we can now shift our focus to the next phase,” Restaurant Brands Group chief executive Russel Creedy said.

“At this stage, we are securing locations within the main metropolitans of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, with the view to expanding further afield in the coming years.

“We are simultaneously rolling out in NSW and ACT in Australia, with a total estimated spend of $65 million across both markets over the next five years.”

Restaurant Brands recently revealed it had grown group sales by 2.7 percent during the first half of FY20, though net profit had fallen 2 percent due to the implementation of a new accounting standard, NZ IFRS 16, which knocked profit down by $2.9 million.

Taco Bell to open first New Zealand outlet next month

Mexican fast food chain Taco Bell reportedly will open its first New Zealand store at The Brickworks in New Lynn’s LynnMall.

Clark Wilson, general manager of Taco Bell NZ for Restaurant Brands, confirmed the location of the first store to NZ Herald.

“We’re thrilled to reveal Taco Bell will be opening its doors in Auckland, early this November,” Wilson said.

Restaurant Brands operates the New Zealand franchises for KFC, Pizza Hut and Carl’s Jr, and operates a KFC franchise in NSW, Australia, as well as Taco Bell and Pizza Hut franchises in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan.

The NZX-listed company earlier this year said it would open 60 Taco Bell stores across Australia and New Zealand over the next five years. In September, it revealed the locations of the first new stores to open in Australia, with stores set to open in Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.

Taco Bell India eyes 600 store Openings

Taco Bell India plans to expand to more than 600 stores before sub-licensing to local operators.

The US-headquartered QSR chain has appointed its existing local partner since 2015 Burman Hospitality,  as master franchise holder for the country.

Following nine years in the territory, the brand now seeks to open 600 locations in India within 10 years, a target that if achieved will make India Taco’s largest foreign market, reflecting the popularity of its menu in the region extending beyond its parent company’s core offerings of its sister brands’ chicken, burgers and pizzas.

The appointment makes Burman the largest Taco Bell franchise globally in terms of store count. “If you look at chicken and pizza, they are two very familiar categories to the consumer and that helped both KFC and Pizza Hut with their explosive growth, not only in India, but all over the world,” said Taco Bell International president Liz Williams. “The Mexican category is a relatively new category for consumers and I think the Indian consumer has shown us they are ready for it.”

Research conducted last year showed that the vast majority of food ordered in the Indian territory is North Indian, followed by Chinese and South Indian. The market for other cuisines is shown to be expanding.

Burman is currently seeking to keep tight control over store launches before seeking sub-franchisees and then expanding into new formats such as food court kiosks.

Taco Bell reveals massive expansion plan in Asia

US Mexican-themed dining chain Taco Bell says it plans to drive growth by expanding its presence in Asian markets. The brand intends to double its number of overseas restaurants to more than 500 outlets within the next few years. Taco Bell’s previous rollouts in Asian markets have occasionally been unsuccessful. An early franchise operation in Japan closed in the 1980s, although it reappeared in the territory four years ago. The brand also withdrew from Singapore in 2009.

“Consumers weren’t ready in terms of awareness and the brand wasn’t positioned right at the time”, said president of Taco Bell International Liz Williams. The brand now expects to fare well in the territory with its more international young population and “heightened awareness” of Mexican food.

A new store opening in Thailand this week will be modified for the market, including a spicier salsa recipe to suit local tastes. Forty more Thai locations are planned to open under local franchise partner Thoresen Thai Agencies.

Taco Bell, operated by Yum! Brands, has 7000 restaurants in the US.

Gnosis MD Sethaphong Phadungpisuth said more than 50 chains from both local and international brands are exploring the market this year following measures to ease regulations on the part of the Business Development Department.

“The Thailand franchise market will become more active this year. We expect the overall number of new franchise brands both from abroad and the domestic market that will open their franchise in Thailand this year to increase by 10 per cent to about 630 brands”, he said.

According to Gnosis, some brands have chosen Thailand as a springboard to other Asean countries, in particular Myanmar and Laos.

Among those diverse brands set to start operations in Thailand this year include Taco Bell, The Edge Learning Centre, and Singaporean hygiene and disinfection products firm Sureclean. Additionally the number of Taiwanese milk tea chains continues to increase in the territory.

Franchise business in Thailand is estimated to be valued at THB250-300 billion (US$7.84 billion).
