Watch inspires Tag Heuer’s Ginza Store

In a world-first concept, every aspect of the store is modular from the digital façade and displays to the decor. It offers customers immersion in the brand universe with its omni-channel buying experience.

A highlight are the iTags, the brand’s connected displays. With just a few clicks on an iPad built into the display, the customer can browse watch models. When they make a choice, the watches, on a pivoting support, are instantly lit up on the display. Customers can also transfer their selection to a mobile device, allowing them to extend their experience outside of the store through linking into My Tag Heuer.

Customers have total independence with a host of options, such as online ordeing with instore pick-up or a more comprehensive introduction to the piece in a traditional store on the second floor. The Tag Heuer sales team, connected to the iTag via a watch, know directly if a customer wishes to try on a particular model.

American model Bella Hadid and Kabuki actor Shido Nakamura together broke open the lid of a sake barrel as part of the traditional opening ceremony for the Tokyo boutique.

  • Ferragamo and Versace watches to innovate

Ferragamo and Versace watches to innovate

It is no secret that retailers, distributors and manufacturers need to find new ways to meet consumers’ changing expectations in the luxury and fashion markets.

These changes in consumer behavior led Paolo Marai, president and CEO of the Timex Group Luxury Division, which manages the timepiece business for Salvatore Ferragamo, Versace and Versus Versace, to appoint the MadaLuxe Group as its U.S. and Caribbean distributor.

This new arrangement was actually announced in January 2017 but the two companies have spent almost a year formulating a strategy before truly making the partnership known in November 2017. It is a multi-tiered approach that ultimately focuses on the in-store experience for consumers.

“We started in January 2017, but we really wanted to have a kind of honeymoon period and develop an understanding of the way we need to work and the way we need to develop and that is why we decided not to make it a big event in the very beginning. Let’s work a few months together and get a really strong team,” Marai said in a recent interview.

The companies have spent this year hiring people in management roles experienced in both the fashion and the Swiss watch industry, including people who used to work with Fossil, Burberry, Tom Ford and Tag Heuer.

They are working on sales training, product pricing, inventory management at the store level, in-store displays and after-sales service that are all uniform in the experience they provide. It’s not an easy task as the watch brands are sold in department stores, independent specialty stores and in branded boutiques. So relationship building is vital for this effort to be successful.

“This year has been a transition year but we are seeing very positive signs that 2018 will be a strong year. First of all because we have a bunch of new products coming that we feel good about; and second, we organized ourselves to have this smooth transition not to disrupt the market,” he said. “I feel that 99% of the time we are absolutely aligned at what needs to be done.”

MadaLuxe Group is a 30-year-old family-owned business that is one of the largest distributors of luxury fashion and accessories. It designs, produces, buys, sells, markets and distributes apparel, accessories and home goods from well-known luxury and contemporary brands. This is the company’s first time in the watch business, which is one reason why it has been on a hiring spree looking for talent. However, this is a company well-experienced in providing solutions for luxury fashion brands with a distribution network of about 300 retail stores in the U.S.

The company, which has seven divisions, was co-founded by the mother and son team of Sandy Sholl, CEO, and Adam Freede, president. They created the luxury segment of their business seven years ago and see it as a growth business because of younger consumers who are well-educated and curious when it comes to luxury.

“We just believe many more Americans understand what luxury is,” Sholl said during the same interview with Marai. “In the past they may have been intimidated to walk into a luxury store but now they are a lot more knowledgeable. We penetrated the luxury market very aggressively and spent a lot of time with all types of luxury lifestyle products.”

Freede added, “We see the American market as a very big growth area in all categories, not just timepieces, because of the quality and craftsmanship of heritage brands. These timepieces go right into what we believe are major trends in the U.S.”

Marai said MadaLuxe has long-term relationships with department stores. He believes MadaLuxe will increase their presence of Ferragamo and Versace watches, ensure the sales staff is well trained and properly manage the inventory.

“We needed a partner who knows luxury and who has a distribution-enhanced approach with department stores. They know the heads when going from one department store to another. This helps a lot. We chose someone with tremendous luxury experience and with a very open-minded approach.”

Marai is also happy that MadaLuxe has created a division just for the management of the Ferragamo and Versace watch business.

“There is a complete new team dedicated to watches, which is something that makes us feel good,” he said. “We really hired a bunch of people who are expert in the watch category.”

Marai, a native of Milan, has seen first-hand the changes in the fashion and luxury watch businesses since he began to lead the Timex Group Luxury Division in 2005, headquartered nearby in Lugano, Switzerland.

“It is a new type of consumer that wants to buy in a different way and we have to learn how to process this new consumer,” he said. “It’s not just about new products because new products mean nothing if you don’t have the entire marketing story around it. I’m not even talking about marketing as it has been done in the past. It is a completely different story right now.

“What is happening is that when people are entering a store they don’t want to buy a product. They want to have an experience, which involves the quality of service and the way you display your story inside the store,” Marai continued. “There is a lot of history behind a brand and there’s a new generation of people who want to know more about it in order to feel that they’re not just buying a product. Instead, they want to buy something that pertains to their world.”

Much of the strategy is dealing with how young people digest fashion today and what appeals to them. Some fashion brands, such as Versace, have an identity based on its enormous popularity in the 1990s. When asked if young people still identify with this esthetic, Sholl said that in her experience Versace is as relevant today as it ever was and she points to her Versace watch as an example.

“Versace is the most recognized and the most popular brand. It’s actually astounding how good Versace does in general as a brand,” she said. “When you look at this watch I would buy this as jewelry. It’s more than just a timepiece. It’s just a great fashion statement.”

Marai pointed to Milan Fashion week, where Versace was the highlight with its tribute to its founder, Gianni Versace, who was tragically killed 20 years ago. For the runway show, the fashion house brought back supermodels of the ’90s: Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Carla Bruni and Helena Christensen. But Marai also noted that the show was a statement about the future of the brand.

“The strength of the brand is not from a position of the past. It must show that it has a capacity of what it says for the future generations. Definitely, Versace as a brand is showing they are really turning the page. The last show they did in Milano was in honor of Gianni. But it also was statement that said, ‘You did it, now it’s time to move forward.’ It was a very important message.”

  • Baselworld to halve exhibitor numbers in 2018

Baselworld to halve exhibitor numbers in 2018

Baselworld, the world’s leading show for watches and jewellery, will halve its exhibitor numbers and shorten the show’s duration by two days in 2018.

The exhibitor numbers in 2018 are expected to be around 600-700, compared to around 1,300 this year. The prices for stand rental will also be lowered by -10%, the organizers revealed.

Baselworld said the decision to reduce the number of exhibitors and length of the show is a result of market consolidation in terms of marketing and production and the challenges of digital technology.

In a statement, Baselworld said: “Baselworld remains faithful to its strategy of quality and diversity. However, the watch and jewellery market is undergoing a period of profound change. Baselworld 2018 presents itself in a denser and more concentrated form in several respects.

“Baselworld has decided to maintain its outstanding quality for the next edition. The show does not rely on quantity, but will remain the leading event for premier global brands. And this in all segments.”

According to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, Swiss watch exports fell by -9.8% in 2016 – their second consecutive annual drop.

“The environment confronting the Swiss watch industry remained difficult throughout the year 2016. Demand for personal luxury goods fell, especially for the most expensive products. Timepieces therefore had to contend with changes in the choices made by consumers who are increasingly interested in the notion of experience associated with the world of luxury and less in shopping as used to be the case,” said the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.

Baselworld is scheduled to take place from 22 to 27 March 2018.

  • Singapore helps boost Swiss watch exports

Singapore helps boost Swiss watch exports

Singapore has been a major contributor to a continuing upswing in Swiss watch exports, reports the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry.

The value of watches sent to Singapore rose by 89.6 per cent last month, says the federation, mainly because of interest in expensive timepieces.

As the Hong Kong market recovers, it achieved sustained growth of 13.7 per cent.

While exports to Japan grew in August, the market lost ground again with last month’s figures tumbling by 15.6 per cent.

The pace of growth also slackened in China at 1.2 per cent.

Overall, Swiss watch exports rose for the sixth month in succession, their value last month reaching 1.8 billion francs (US$1.8 billion), 3.7 per cent growth over September last year.

Among the main categories in value terms, watches in precious metal and steel continued to advance, while there was a sharp downturn in bimetal timepieces, which have been declining significantly for several months, says the federation. Volumes also took a dive.

More expensive timepieces are in demand, the figures showing an 8 per cent gain in value of exported items costing more than 3000 francs (export price). Those between 200 and 3000 francs showed slight growth.

However, the exports of cheaper watches have been falling sharply for more than a year, says the federation. Exports of watches priced at less than 200 francs eroded by 18.5 per cent.

A range of limited-edition watches that pay tribute to the history and tradition of Singapore are being launched by Swiss brand Louis Moinet.

FreshOut.Today reports the watches will be revealed on Singapore’s National Day, August 9, the city state’s 52nd birthday.

“Two different continents and cultures merge in this project as a tribute to Singaporean history,” says the company.

The limited-edition collection comprises 84 pieces with decorative elements that reference symbols and the past of the Lion City.

Features such as the ArtScience Museum, Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands Hotel and the Singapore Flyer are engraved across the lower part of the dial, and over skyline the moon faces five small stars, a reference to the flag of Singapore.

An opening in the dial reveals part of the inner workings. “This also shows the passing of time and powerfully represents and allows us to reflect on each second of Singapore’s independence,” says the company.

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre reopens Philippines store

    Jaeger-LeCoultre reopens Philippines store

Luxury watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre has reopened its flagship store in Makati City in the Philippines, enhancing the experience for local timepiece gurus.

Located in Ayala Center’s Greenbelt 5 in Makati, the 40-square-metre boutique was reopened last week with an official relaunch party attended by company executives including Jaeger-LeCoultre’s managing director for Southeast Asia and Oceania, Maxence Kinget.

“It’s not a store, it’s a boutique with an experience,” Kinget told the Philstar, when describing the new store at the party.

“For us it’s very important that there is emotion and discovery, the two key mindsets when we designed the boutique.”

The newly reopened Philippine boutique will carry the watchmaker’s complete range of watches and accessories, as well as the famous Geophysic Tourbillon Universal Time, of which just one will be stocked.

Jaeger-LeCoultre has also launched a new Geophysic collection for men with a steel metal bracelet, said to be “very good for South Asia because with the humidity and warm weather sometimes you want a stainless-steel bracelet instead of the alligator strap,” according to Kinget.

There’s also a women’s range, with a new take on the iconic ‘Rendez-Vous’, a round watch with diamonds around the bezel.

Finally, the new store will stock boutique-exclusive pieces, made in collaboration with Jaeger-LeCoultre and Lucerne – the distributor of Jaeger-LeCoultre in the Philippines — that aren’t available anywhere else in the world.

Moreover, timepiece aficionados can create their own one-of-a-kind watch with Jaeger-LeCoultre’s new bespoke service on offer.

“There is in the Philippines a very high level of watchmaking knowledge, a very strong appetite for watches and a very strong Maison in the Philippines,” said Kinglet. “Jaeger-LeCoultre is considered a reference in fine watchmaking, as well as having a very high level of craftsmanship. Within our manufacture we have developed the biggest collection of movements — 1,200 calibers developed in our history, which is absolutely crazy — and we still produce more than 50 calibers in the collection today. We spend a lot of time trying to make sure there is a very strong connection between respect for our tradition, our heritage, as well as being oriented towards the future.

The Swiss watch group entered The Philippines in 2000, after striking a deal with Lucerne. But it only opened its first store in 2008, which is the newly fitted Greenbelt 5 store.

Jaeger-LeCoutlre is also sold at Lucerne Jewellers in Taguig City and at the recently opened L’Atelier Lucerne at Shangri-La at the Fort.

  • Watches stolen during sledge hammer raid on luxury shop in Hong Kong

Watches stolen during sledge hammer raid on luxury shop in Hong Kong

Two burglars smashed the window of a luxury goods shop in the IFC mall in Central and fled with 40 watches in front of a security guard during a Lunar New Year’s Day raid.

In a drama that lasted for barely two minutes, one of the pair broke open the glass door of Montblanc with a sledgehammer at about 11.40pm on Saturday, when the shop had been closed for the whole day.

The duo, said to be non-Chinese and wearing surgical masks and knitted caps, defied the guard and smashed three glass showcases inside, sweeping the watches into a bag and ran.

At one point, they attempted to intimidate the guard by threatening him with the sledgehammer.

At a taxi stand outside, the pair got into a car driven by a third man and sped off.

Police said the Germany-based chain, which specialises in several lines of products including watches, writing instruments and jewellery, had confirmed that about 40 watches valued at a total of HK$1 million were snatched.

Central district crime squad was investigating

A sledgehammer has been used in previous burglaries in the city. In September, a group of five or more burglars stole about HK$2 million worth of handbags and watches from the Chanel store at Lee Garden One on Hysan Avenue – one of Hong Kong’s prime retail strips in Causeway Bay, in just 80 seconds.

The chronographs come equipped with ‘Manufacture Breitling movements, as well as special limited ‘Boutique Editions’.

The décor also highlights the brand’s aeronautical heritage, enabling “visitors to plunge directly into the Breitling universe, a unique experience that excites the senses,” said Breitling in a statement.

Both stores boast a VIP lounge, offering customers a one-on-one, personalised shopping experience.

This family business is also one of the last remaining independent Swiss watch brands.

Shoppes at Parisian Macau, which only opened in September this year, hosts 170 luxury and lifestyle brands in its 320,000 square feet retail space. The new Breitling Macau Parisian store is located at Place Vendome on Level 3.
