  • First signs of WhatsApp third party chat support appear in latest beta

First signs of WhatsApp third party chat support appear in latest beta

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app, is gearing up to open its doors to other messaging platforms. This has been in the works for some time now, but thanks to some evidence found in the latest beta version of the app, we now have more information on how the feature will work and how far along it is in its progress.

The need for WhatsApp to add this functionality comes in direct response to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which aims to break down barriers between tech giants and increase competition in the digital space. WhatsApp’s upcoming “chat interoperability” feature will allow users in the European Union to connect with contacts across different messaging apps, even if those contacts don’t use WhatsApp themselves.

Wabetainfo discovered the feature, which is currently in development and not available to users, in WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.5.18. As per the screenshot uncovered (shown below), a new section will be introduced to the app. There, users can choose to enable interoperability, granting them the power to exchange messages beyond WhatsApp’s ecosystem seamlessly.

While end-to-end encryption will be maintained, different messaging apps may use varying encryption protocols, leading to a separate inbox for these external chats. Because of this, WhatsApp is advising users to exercise caution when using chat interoperability.

In addition to encryption compatibility concerns, cross-platform communication could potentially increase exposure to spam and scams. Every app has its own privacy policies, potentially handling your data differently than WhatsApp would.

Regardless of these hurdles to overcome, this move by WhatsApp is a major win for consumers in the EU. It promotes greater choice and flexibility in how they connect with others online.

It is unknown whether these app changes will apply globally or only in the EU. However, while the feature is completely optional, it signifies a positive shift towards interconnectedness in the messaging app landscape.

  • GoTo, TikTok will be wholly compliant with Indonesia’s trade regulation

GoTo, TikTok will be wholly compliant with Indonesia’s trade regulation

Indonesian tech firm GoTo and Chinese-owned partner TikTok will be wholly compliant in a month and a half with the Southeast Asian nation’s regulation that bans in-app transactions on social media, GoTo’s CEO said on Wednesday.

Short video app TikTok acquired in December majority shares in GoTo’s e-commerce unit Tokopedia after the Indonesian trade ministry banned transactions on its TikTok Shop e-commerce unit.

“Integration process is going well. All parties continue to communicate with the related ministries and as far as we know the process is nearing completion,” CEO Patrick Walujo said in an online briefing.

Indonesian minister for small and medium enterprises Teten Masduki said last week TikTok had yet to comply with the regulation.

TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Following December’s deal, TikTok has reopened its e-commerce services, which are now facilitated by Tokopedia.

GoTo’s management said in the briefing that it will receive a quarterly e-commerce fee from Tokopedia, with the sum being dependent on Tokopedia’s gross merchandise value.

Based on a GMV of $2.9 billion recorded in the third quarter of last year, the e-commerce service fee for GoTo will be $11.4 million, GoTo said.

GoTo also expects its partnership with TikTok will benefit not only its e-commerce business but also its financial services segment as it will be able to offer digital payments and “buy now, pay later” credit schemes on TikTok.

  • New Apple Watch ads replay real-life situations where the timepiece saved the user’s life

New Apple Watch ads replay real-life situations where the timepiece saved the user’s life

While the Apple Watch was not originally created to save lives, over the years some of the health-related features on the device have sent out timely warnings allowing users to get to the doctor or the hospital before it was too late. In other situations, the Apple Watch on a person’s wrist notified emergency services or first responders, and a timely rescue was made. If you recall, when Apple was planning to launch the Apple Watch in April 2015, the tech giant was looking at the device as a piece of luxury jewelry.

Apple was able to get its timepiece on the cover of regional editions of Vogue months before the product was released. In early 2017, Apple started shutting luxury-themed Apple Watch pop-up stores in Europe as it moved away from promoting the Apple Watch as a luxury timepiece as reports started to come in about users having their lives saved thanks to the watch.

Apple has released a couple of new television commercials for the Apple Watch, both of which are based on real-life events and focus on a specific health-related feature. The first ad, created by Apple Australia, is called “Lexie’s Heart.” A young woman Lexie Northcott started to get low heart rate notifications on her Apple Watch and after a trip to the hospital, she was diagnosed with a congenital heart block. Doctors operated and gave her a pacemaker and, as Lexie’s mom says later in the ad, “If it wasn’t for that watch, she might not be here right now.” This 30-second ad is focused on “Heart Rate Notifications.”

The second ad, also 30 seconds in length, also from Apple Australia, and also based on a true story, is called “Bruce and the Roo.” A gentleman named Bruce Mildenhall had been knocked unconscious by…wait for it…a kangaroo while he was biking. Bruce hit the ground hard, activating the Fall Detection feature on his Apple Watch. The device called emergency services and even messaged his wife to alert her.

When Bruce came to, he heard the sound of someone hitting the back glass of the ambulance he was placed in. He then heard his wife asking, “Have you got Bruce Mildenhall in there? Is he alive?” The first responders told her, “Yes, he’s OK.” As the ad for the Apple Watch’s Automatic Fall Detection comes to an end, Bruce says, “I still wear my watch and I’m still looking for that kangaroo with tire marks.”

Suppose Apple does run these ads outside of Australia and adds them to its advertising rotation in the U.S.. In that case, you might see one or both appear during this weekend’s big NBA and NHL games, college basketball telecasts, and between innings or during a pitching change on MLB spring training broadcasts.

  • Vietnam Airlines to ground 12 planes for maintenance

Vietnam Airlines to ground 12 planes for maintenance

Vietnam Airlines has to ground 12 A321 aircraft, representing 20% of its domestic fleet, for up to 300 days due to engine issues, as supply chain disruptions have doubled the maintenance time, its CEO said.

Le Hong Ha said engine issues are plaguing over 3,500 A321/A320neo aircraft worldwide with Pratt & Whitney engines.

Vietnam Airlines uses 24 of the engines, he said Thursday on the sidelines of the 2024 International Airline Symposium in Hanoi.

The engine problems have also impacted Vietnam Airlines’ Airbus A350 aircraft, he added.

The problem is caused by a rare condition in the powder metal used to manufacture certain engine parts, a concern flagged by Pratt & Whitney in July 2023 as affecting engines produced between October 2015 and September 2021.

This has caused numerous airlines globally to ground or inspect their aircraft.

Budget carrier Vietjet may also have fleet trouble due to the engine issues.

A shortage of aircraft has been partly blamed for the recent jump in domestic airfares, which is turning passengers away.

Before and after the Lunar New Year holidays airlines carried 13% fewer passengers than last year.

But Ha pointed out that Vietnam is among the few countries still capping airfares, adding the ceilings should be scrapped in future.

  • Motorbike dealerships offer steep discounts in post-Tet sales

Motorbike dealerships offer steep discounts in post-Tet sales

Dealerships are slashing the prices of numerous motorbike models to stimulate demand in the quiet post-Tet (Lunar New Year) season.

Standard Honda Vision models are on sale for VND30 million (US$1,218.2) at some dealerships, down VND1-2 million from before the Tet holiday, which ran from February 8 to 14.

Notably, all versions of the Honda Winner X have had their prices cut by VND3-5 million to VND31-36 million, nearly 35% lower than their suggested retail price of VND46-50 million.

The 2023 Yamaha Exciter 155 VVA is currently subject to a VND5 million discount, while the Suzuki Raider and Satria have had their prices reduced by VND3-5 million at some showrooms.

Dealerships are eager to offer more discount to boost sales and get rid of remaining inventory.

The steep price cuts are necessary to spur demand as the motorbike market is usually inactive in the first quarter, especially after the Tet holiday.

The market has also slowed in general as sales of motorbike decreased by 16.21% from 2022 to 2.51 million units last year, according to the Vietnam Association of Motorbike Manufacturers.

The downtrend continued in January, with Honda Vietnam reporting motorbike sales of 227.560 units, down 0.8% from the previous month.

Despite the slumping sales, Vietnam is still the second largest motorbike consumer in Southeast Asia, according to data recently published by market intelligence firm MotorCycles Data.

  • Opportunity for Vietnam as Indonesia to import 1.6M tons more rice

Opportunity for Vietnam as Indonesia to import 1.6M tons more rice

Indonesia plans to increase rice imports by 1.6 million tons this year, giving Vietnamese exporters a big opportunity, the Vietnam Trade Office in that country said.

The import licenses for the additional quota would be issued soon by its Ministry of Trade once legal procedures are completed, it said.
It will increase the country’s rice imports to 3.6 million tons this year.

Vietnamese exporters could capitalize on this opportunity, but would have to compete on price with many other countries, according to the head of a government agency in Dong Thap Province, one of the largest rice producers in the Mekong Delta.

According to the official, Vietnam has advantages in terms of delivery times and quality, but its prices are high.

“If businesses offer competitive prices, the chances of winning bids will be better.”

The trade office advised businesses to push exports in the early months of the year since Indonesia’s main rice harvest has been delayed by two to three months due to a water shortage caused by the El Nino phenomenon.

Indonesia imported 441,930 tons of rice in January, an 82% increase year-on-year, including 32,340 tons from Vietnam.

    Thailand accounted for 129,780 tons.

Last month seven Vietnamese companies won a bid to export 300,000 tons of rice to Indonesia.

Last year Indonesia was the second largest importer of Vietnamese rice, buying over 1.1 million tons or nearly nine times the volume it had imported in 2022.

  • Nestle’s Smithtown factory gets a $32 million overhaul

Nestle’s Smithtown factory gets a $32 million overhaul

Food and beverage giant Nestle has invested $32 million in its Smithtown factory, aiming to boost the site’s manufacturing line.

The funding will also introduce state-of-the-art technology and support an increased production capacity.

James Garley, the site’s factory manager, said the investment reflects Nestlé’s commitment to support local manufacturing.

“Over the next 12 months, the project will inject an estimated $20 million into the local economy and support almost 200 jobs as we construct a new building to house Milo production,” explained Garley.

The Smithtown factory – which has been operating for over 100 years – manufactures Milo, Nesquik, Malted milk, and Nescafe mixes.

“It’s a complex project, but the team will work to ensure the facilities continue to deliver the choc-malt crunch of Milo Australians have loved for generations,” Garley concluded.

The upgrade is due to be completed by the end of this year.

NZ haircare company Monday expands US presence with second brand

New Zealand haircare brand Monday Haircare is expanding its footprint in the US with a second brand Osana Naturals.

Osana Naturals offers skin and hair care formulas with six functional fragrances. Its formulas promote skin and hair health through moisturizing chemicals and replenishing botanical extracts.

Jaimee Lupton, a beauty entrepreneur from Auckland, New Zealand, started her first brand, Monday Haircare, in February 2020, to make high-quality hair care more affordable. Monday is now stocked with more than 100 retailers in 50,000 doors across 33 countries and is ranked as the number one haircare brand on TikTok.

“I’m a firm believer that everyone should be able to enjoy luxurious beauty products, and an accessible price point or shopping experience shouldn’t equal sacrificing modern values or efficacy,” said Lupton.

“There is a gap in the mass market when it comes to modern, beautiful and effective personal care, and we’re excited to give shoppers the kind of products they crave finally – and deserve – with Osana Naturals.”

Cruelty Free International’s Leaping Bunny certification recognises Osana Naturals as a cruelty-free beauty brand that meets the criteria for product development, supply chain, and distribution.

Osana Naturals products are free from common ingredients including sulphates, phthalates, parabens, BHA, BHT, mineral oils, and aluminium. They are also dermatologically tested, pH-balanced, and suited to all skin and hair types.

  • Google Photos adding option to tailor your memories based on your activity

Google Photos adding option to tailor your memories based on your activity

Google Photos is adding another feature intended to make your cherished memories more easily accessible and enjoyable. In addition to the recently expanded rollout of automatic Stacks (which organize similar photos together), Google has unveiled a new setting called “Activity-based personalization.” This powerful feature enhances the app’s “Memories” section.

The “Memories” section, which you might recognize as that carousel of photos and videos at the top of the Google Photos app, can now be set to learn from your actions within it. Activity-based personalization learns about the way you engage with Memories — those you linger on and those you may skip — and uses that information to make them more relevant.

Activity-based personalization is by default enabled, ensuring that you get the most out of Memories right away. However, you can easily disable this setting at any time. If you do, data about your Memories interactions from the last 18 months will be deleted. Don’t worry, though; this won’t affect your photo library, other Memories, or the Creations that Google Photos generates.

For now, it appears that setting can only be accessed from the web version of Google Photos, although it isn’t appearing for everyone yet. That said, the Memories carousel is present on both the web and mobile (Android and iOS) versions of the app, so whatever setting you choose for it will affect your experience throughout.

To check if the feature has rolled out to you and to tweak it, you’ll need to head to photos.google.com on your computer, then click on “Settings” at the top right of the page. From there, you’ll need to scroll down to the “Memories” sub-section to find the “Activity-based personalization” toggle, which should be grouped with the “Time-based memories” and “Themed memories” toggles for featured memories.

Google Photos is a great app for backing up and enjoying photos and videos, and this new feature joins a range of options already available to personalize your experience. It’s great to see that the app continues to get better and offer more options to those who choose it as the keeper of their previous memories.

  • Chilean cherries 10% costlier than last year on lower imports

Chilean cherries 10% costlier than last year on lower imports

The prices of Chilean cherries are 10% higher this year at VND600,000 (US$24.4) due to lower import volumes.

Size 3JD cherries, which have a diameter of 30-32mm, are sold at VND599,000 per kilogram and VND580,000 if bought in bulk, at a fruit store on Phan Xich Long Street, Phu Nhuan District.

2JD cherries measuring 28-30mm cost VND569,000 and smaller ones sell at around VND250,000-300,000.

In Hanoi too, large cherries are being sold at VND600,000.

Smaller cherries cost less because they are of lower quality and prone to bruising.

The prices are 5-10% higher than at the same time last year.

The store manager on Phan Xich Long Street said: “This year’s supply is lower than previous years. Coupled with increased shipping costs, the prices are up 10%.”

Last year Chile exported 800-1,000 tons of cherries to Vietnam, up 16% from the 688 tons in 2022, according to the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association.

As a result their prices dropped to as low as VND200,000-300,000 last year.

  • Google TV gets design tweak that makes your favorite apps more accessible

Google TV gets design tweak that makes your favorite apps more accessible

Google TV is once again getting a design tweak. Following the addition of new landing pages last year aimed at simplifying navigation, the “For you” screen is now tackling the “Your apps” row, introducing several updates to make navigation easier and your overall viewing experience more enjoyable.

The app icons on your Google TV are sporting a brand new look, with the old squares and rectangles gone and circular app icons replacing them. This change aims to give your home screen a more modern feel while also making it easier to locate your favorite applications.

The update also adds a new shortcut that gives you direct access to free TV channels on Google TV. The platform added over 800 new fully-integrated free channels last year that included hit TV shows, game shows, music channels, various entertainment shows, and more — all without downloading additional apps or paying for a subscription.

Now, you’ll have yet another way to access these channels, without having to click away from the “For you” section. For your convenience, a new shortcut to free channels will now be added to the “Your apps” row.

Now that the app icons will be circular, they will take up less space. This opened the door for Google TV to expand the number of app icons visible in the “Your apps” row. You can quickly jump into more of your most-used apps without scrolling.

You have always been able to rearrange the order of your apps, however, the process wasn’t exactly very user-friendly. Now, Google TV will feature “reorder” and “add app” buttons at the end of the “Your apps” row. This will allow you to take control of your app layout by moving your favorites to the front and seamlessly discovering and installing new apps to enhance your entertainment setup.

These updates are rolling out over the next few months, so watch your Google TV screen for the transformation. With a sleeker design, easier access to content, and more user control, Google TV is continuously improving at putting your entertainment experience first.

  • Google Contacts could soon get a home screen widget that displays text messages

Google Contacts could soon get a home screen widget that displays text messages

Aside from the occasionally added new functionality, Google Contacts isn’t an app that is known for getting frequent updates. However, there is one update that is possibly on the way, which will add a nifty new home screen widget and a fresh user interface.

By flipping a few developer flags in the app’s version 4.26, @AssembleDebug from TheSPAndroid was able to identify these changes. While these features are currently in the testing phase and there is no timeline currently available for deployment, we can get a sneak peek at what was found hidden in the code.

The first noticeable change is the design change on the main Contacts screen. The familiar phone, email, and company icons will now be tucked away behind a three-dot menu. This change clears space for a brand new “+” icon in the search bar, allowing users to add contacts easier when on the go.

Additionally, interacting with contact details like email and labels now opens a convenient bottom sheet for options instead of the traditional sidebar accessed by the hamburger menu. This new approach offers a cleaner, more intuitive way to navigate your contacts.

But perhaps the most noticeable change is the addition of a widget that will allow users to see text conversations from selected contacts directly on their home screen. When the feature is rolled out to your device, you will need to grant the Contacts app the necessary permission to fully display your messages, since they will now be more easily accessible to prying eyes.

As with many Google updates, especially ones that are still being tested and have yet to be announced, the rollout schedule is very TBD. Usually, updates such as these are reserved for Pixel feature drops. If all goes well and no significant bugs are found while testing, it is possible that we could see this roll out around April, but that is just some good old speculation on our part.
