  • Living Coral proves Color of the Year sells well

Living Coral proves Color of the Year sells well

After color forecaster Pantone announced its annual Color of the Year in December, Korean companies, spanning cosmetics brands to hiking-gear makers, have rushed into releasing products in the vibrant hue. According to Pantone, the color was chosen for being “animating and life-affirming” able to energize and enliven with a softer edge. The color, which stands somewhere between pink and orange, is also a reminder of the beauty of coral reefs, “a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life” that is only visible in a healthy environment.

Coral is already a popular color for many cosmetics brands in Korea, and is annually one of spring’s trendiest colors.

One of the first local collaborators with Pantone is cosmetics brand VDL. Early this month, the company released its “2019 VDL + Pantone Collection,” including a 12-color eye shadow palette, lipstick, primer and cushion packs, all featuring the trendy hue.

This is the company’s fifth collaboration with Pantone since 2015; every January, VDL releases a lineup of cosmetics featuring the Color of the Year.

Olive Young, a chain of health and beauty brands, saw a 45-percent sales increase in their coral- and orange-toned cosmetics from Dec. 17 to Jan. 7.

According to the company, the major reason behind the increase was Pantone’s annual announcement.

Unlike previous Color of the Year picks – such as Ultra Violet in 2018 and Greenery in 2017 – which are relatively difficult to apply as makeup, Living Coral goes well with many skin tones, while “naturally brightening” one’s face.

In recent weeks, YouTube has been dominated with hundreds of videos of beauty bloggers applying Living Coral makeup collections.

Living Coral is also influencing the design and fashion industries.

Korean furniture brand Modern House teamed up with Pantone to develop a special series of home goods, ranging from kitchen items and bathroom utensils to home decorations and tumblers in the beginning of the year.

Casual wear brand Uniqlo Korea set this year’s fashion key word as “24/7 Relax & Comfort” and revealed a series of spring clothing featuring vibrant colors, including Pantone’s Living Coral.

Sportswear brand MLB has also released a collection of hoodies, puffer jackets, beanies and pants in different shades of coral.

“Coral [is a very popular] color in various categories – from lipsticks to blush and eye shadows,” Olive Young said in a statement on Jan. 8.

“The sales of coral-colored products have been increasing since the beginning of the year. ”

The Seiko Dream Square opens in Tokyo

Seiko Watch Corporation has opened an interactive hub of its watchmaking to allow visitors to “look, feel and experience” the rich history and heritage of the brand. The Seiko Dream Square is a new four-story retail complex in the heart of the watch brand’s birthplace in Tokyo’s Ginza district and showcases its heritage of watchmaking since 1881 with a museum, showrooms and entertainment areas.

The aim of the new retail complex is to become a “point of destination” for visitors as well a centre for communicating the brand’s story globally said the watchmaker in a statement.

It features a small museum on the first floor in the image of the symbolic Wako clock tower’s interior, a historic symbol of Seiko and a proud landmark of Ginza in which Seiko founder Kintaro Hattori placed its headquarters.

On the other levels, visitors can shop Seiko’s leading collections, Prospex, Presage, Lukia, and Astron, with each displayed in a “refined setting” based on the particular brand’s unique identity.

Commenting on the opening, Seiko Watch Corporation chairman and chief executive, Shinji Hattori said: “A Seiko watch is not merely an industrial product. • Jack Wills bags cash injection to save the business

Jack Wills bags cash injection to save the business

Creditors of fashion label Jack Wills under HSBC have ordered an assessment of the firm’s finances, according to a report. The news comes just weeks after Jack Wills achieved new investment of £10 million (US$12.8 million), followed by speculation that the company may soon need further financial help – prompting the appointment of advisers from auditing firm EY.

The new investment reportedly comes from an unnamed wealthy Italian family, which has previously invested in Jack Wills’ majority shareholder, BlueGem Capital Partners. BlueGem itself is thought to have provided a similar injection of cash. The identity of the investor is likely to be revealed following reports expected to be filed at Companies House.

Brand co-founder Peter Williams was ejected from the firm’s board last year, with new executives brought in to effect a turnaround.

Jack Wills operates more than 90 stores worldwide, including five stores in Hong Kong and two in Singapore.

Shilla Duty Free recruits Asia’s top social media influencers to pitch K-beauty

South Korean Hotel Shilla has recruited five social media influencers across Asian countries to hype K-beauty products through Shilla Duty Free stores. They will work with the travel retailer to guide customers on how to use Shilla Duty Free online store as well as show the latest makeup trends using Korean cosmetics products via their social media channels.

Jaspal unveils collection joined by Lynnie Z

Thai fashion brand Jaspal has opened a new flagship store featuring its limited edition collaboration with London-based artist Lynnie Z. The partnership with Jaspal’s Hi Life collection marks the opening of the brand’s new IconSiam flagship. It is one of a series of partnerships between Jaspal and global artists to ensure that unique styles emerge each season.

The Hi Life collection for men and women features stars, hearts, lips and faces as motifs with strong colour themes referencing Africa.

“I was so honoured to be a part of such a wonderful project,” said Z. “Thailand has an outstanding heritage and Thai people love art and fashion, which is the reason why I decided to come on board. Also, I think Jaspal and I share the same artistic soul, and, more importantly, the brand fully understands the story relayed behind my works,” she said.

“To me, this project was really wonderful, allowing me to create a masterpiece collection with a famous local brand, and communicate my inspiration, passion, and uniqueness through the collection. This is one of the best works I’ve ever created. As for the process in making this collection, for the most part, I came up with ideas and colours from my sketchbook. These are organic and abrupt but they reflect a liveliness that I wanted to communicate through the collection.”

  • LVMH invests into Gabriela Hearst

    LVMH invests into Gabriela Hearst

LVMH Luxury Ventures, an investment arm of the multinational conglomerate, has taken a minority stake in New York-based luxury label Gabriela Hearst. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, although LVMH Luxury Ventures typically invests between €2 and €15 million.

Hearst, who ran contemporary-priced label Candela for more than a decade before launching her upscale luxury offering in 2015, has briskly built a ready-to-wear business based on sharply tailored silhouettes rendered in ultra-expensive fabrics, with a focus on sustainably sourced materials. In 2018, just three years after she launched her label, the collection — which also includes a robust handbag business, mostly sold direct-to-consumer — generated between $15 and $20 million, according to sources familiar with the business.

Launched in 2017, LVMH Luxury Ventures is an investment vehicle within the LVMH group that aims to invest in emerging labels that have already shown an ability to scale.

Investments have included French apothecary brand Officine Universelle Buly and sneaker resale shop Stadium Goods, which was subsequently acquired by Farfetch for $250 million in December 2018.

  • Poh Kong Malaysia to open three more stores

Poh Kong Malaysia to open three more stores

Malaysian jeweller Poh Kong plans to open three more stores this year, boosting its profit. The improved profit is also likely to be driven by  higher gold prices, tipped by some to range from US$1300–$1400 per ounce later this year. The firm’s new stores will open in IOI Mall Puchong, Aeon Nilai and South Key Mall in Johor, taking its network to 95 outlets nationwide.

“We are aware of the US-China trade war, as well as the anticipation of the US interest rate hikes and currency fluctuations that alter consumer sentiments that could lead to market uncertainty,” said MD Eddie Choon Yee Seiong. “Yet, we are optimistic to maintain or do better in 2019 as compared to the previous financial year.”

Indicators of upward movement for the company include the improving economy and the strength of the Malaysian ringgit against the American dollar.

While burgeoning demand saw the firm’s performance improved during the last financial year, fluctuations in gold prices and a weaker ringgit saw a steep drop in actual profits at 20.75 per cent lower than the previous year.

“We reckon gold will benefit from the ongoing concerns looming around the US-China trade war concerns, as investors may find the precious metal a safe haven,” said Choon.

  • Bossini losses set to double

    Bossini losses set to double

Bossini International has warned the group is expected to record a loss attributable to owners of between HK$23 million and $28 million (US$2.93 million to $3.6 million) for the six months to December – roughly double the loss of the same period last year. Chairman Bess Tsin said in a stock exchange filing that the loss was largely due to “unseasonal warm winter weather and weak consumer sentiment in several core markets” where the group operates.

The company said the estimate was based on a preliminary assessment of the company’s accounts for the period and details would be confirmed in late February, when the company announces its annual results.

  • Richemont Group sales soars after YNAP acquisitions

Richemont Group sales soars after YNAP acquisitions

Richemont Group sales soared 24 per cent in December quarter, to €3.915 billion. It was largely down to the inclusion of online acquisitions Yoox-Net-A-Porter (YNAP) and Watchfinder, which were consolidated into the group’s accounts on May 1 and June 1, respectively. But even excluding that, the sales growth was still strong at 5 per cent by constant exchange rates.

By region, European sales accelerated at twice the rate of Asia, up 35 per cent at constant exchange rates, with Asia Pacific – still the company’s largest single geographic market – up by 17 per cent.

Sales in Europe reached €1.147 billion in the quarter, and in Asia €1.389 billion. Sales in the Americas surged 41 per cent to €801 million and in Japan by 14 per cent to €344 million.

The only market where Richemont failed to perform was the Middle East and Africa, where sales slipped 3 per cent to €234 million.

The company’s largest category, jewellery maisons, recorded 8 per cent growth to €1.985 billion, while Richemont said YNAP posted double-digit growth across all regions and solid performances across all its categories. Watchfinder’s sales expanded “more moderately”.

Excluding the new online business unit, Richemont Group sales grew in all regions, with the exception of the Middle East and Europe. During the latter part of the quarter, sales in Europe were affected by social unrest in France which impacted tourism and led to store closures for six consecutive Saturdays. The disposal of Lancel in June also impacted the year-on-year comparison.

A 10 per cent increase in sales in Asia Pacific reflected double-digit sales growth in Mainland China and good increases in other main markets. Sales growth in Hong Kong slowed, primarily due to the strength of the Hong Kong dollar versus the renminbi that resulted in lower tourist spending.

In Japan, a 7 per cent expansion in sales was fuelled by continued domestic and tourist spending as well as the impact of newly opened directly operated boutiques.

Sales in the Americas rose by 9 per cent, primarily driven by the jewellery maisons.

Of Richemont’s many brands, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels led the way, increasing sales by 8 per cent, driven by jewellery and watches.

Richemont operates in four business areas: jewellery maisons, being Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels; specialist watchmakers, being A. Lange & Sohne, Baume & Mercier, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Officine Panerai, Piaget, Roger Dubuis and Vacheron Constantin; online distributors, being YNAP and Watchfinder; and other businesses, including Alfred Dunhill, Azzedine Alaïa, Chloe, Montblanc and Peter Millar.

Current forecasts estimate that its beauty segment represents a potential market size of USD$26 billion by 2021[2]; the proximity of Shiseido Travel Retail aims to empower and guide the team alongside this growth.

“Our new regional headquarters is testament to our solid growth in Asia Pacific over the past few years and my commitment to our consumers and employees in the years to come – I am looking forward to our expanded capabilities in leadership & talent development, innovation and harnessing deeper Asian consumer insights. Lenskart’s eyewear brand John Jacobs is looking to garner Rs 500 crore in revenue in two years as it strengthens its retail presence and expands the product portfolio. The brand, which has eight stores currently in Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru, will add six more in the next two months and aims to set up about 50 stores by March 2021. “John Jacobs has been witnessing strong growth, we expect to close this fiscal with a topline of Rs 180 crore. According to a report, about 40 percent of the sales is driven by online channels, with the rest coming from offline stores.

Last year, Lenskart had said it will invest US$ 4 million in John Jacobs to fuel the brand’s expansion plans.

“We are aggressively growing our presence both in online and offline. The brand is already retailing through Lenksart outlets (over 450 in more than 100 cities). The aim is to take the number of our own stores from 8 now to 50, by March 2021, covering all major metro cities,” he said, adding that the store expansion will entail investment of about Rs 10-15 crore.

John Jacobs is also in discussions with fashion retail chains for distribution of its products.

“In terms of online reach, we are already there on Lenskart and Amazon.in and will soon be available on Flipkart as well,” Duggal said, adding that the brand is aggressively expanding its product portfolio as well.

John Jacobs recently introduced a new eyewear delivery model where the brand delivers eyeglasses, fitted with powered lenses, in a 20-minute timeframe.

The service, currently available in select stores in Bengaluru, will be expanded to Delhi and Pune as well, Duggal said.

He further said that with the new service, the brand expects to “see 30-40 percent upside in orders”.
