  • Qantas to launch new route from Manila to Brisbane

Qantas to launch new route from Manila to Brisbane

Qantas has today announced it will launch a new route from Manila with direct flights to Brisbane in Queensland, Australia.

From 28 October 2024*, the flights will operate four days per week with the Airbus A330 aircraft, marking the first flights set to be operated by the Australian national carrier between the two cities in more than ten years.

The flights add to Qantas’ existing daily service to Sydney and will add more than 100,000 seats between the Philippines and Australia each year.

Tickets for the new Manila-Brisbane route will be available for sale at qantas.com and through travel agents in the coming days.

The flights will be operated by Qantas’ fleet of A330 aircraft with 27 Business Class suites in 1-2-1 configuration, with each suite featuring direct aisle access and converting into a lie-flat bed. All Qantas international fares include checked baggage allowance, food and beverages and inflight entertainment as standard with every booking.

Qantas recently announced it would accelerate a program to introduce ‘fast and free’ Wi-Fi across its existing fleet of international aircraft, including Airbus A330 aircraft with enough bandwidth for every passenger to enjoy a fast and consistent connection. The service will be progressively introduced on Qantas flights between Manila and Australia from next year.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace shares, “The Philippines is a very important part of our Asia network, so we’re pleased to be growing with a new route to Australia. This new connection will strengthen business links between our two countries. The flights will also make it easier for Filipinos to visit family and friends living in Queensland, as well as offering a new gateway for travellers to explore the region.”

He adds, “We know large numbers of our customers have been travelling between Manila and Brisbane via our existing Sydney service, which gives us great confidence about how this route will perform when flights start.”

Korean Air wins best airline onboard menu in Global Traveler’s awards

Korean Air has received top honors for its food and beverage service from Global Traveler in the magazine’s 2024 Leisure and Lifestyle Travel Awards.

The carrier won the best airline onboard menu for its first-class cabin, chalking up another win for its catering program. The airline previously won best airline cuisine, among other awards, in Global Traveler’s 2023 Tested Reader Survey awards.

Depending upon the route and season, the airline offers such menu choices as roasted Chilean sea bass with vermouth sauce, spicy beef short rib stew, spicy buckwheat noodles and traditional Korean bibimbap.

Global Traveler is a U.S.-based monthly luxury travel magazine and conducts annual surveys in which its online and offline subscribers vote for the best companies in travel-related categories. This is the 12th year the magazine has conducted its leisure travel survey.

Korean Air’s continued recognition can be attributed to its ongoing investment and focus on service enhancements. Last year, the airline introduced vegan menu options based on traditional Korean temple cuisine. It also has a diverse selection of pre-order meals, including vegetarian, glucose-free, and children’s selections.

The airline also refined its wine program with the guidance of internationally renowned sommelier Marc Almert and introduced more than 50 new wines to its award-winning collection.

Korean Air continues to be recognized worldwide for its efforts to enhance customer service. Last year, the airline was awarded a Skytrax 5-star airline rating for the second consecutive time, an APEX 5-star global airline rating for the seventh consecutive year, and named Best Business and First Class Airline in the USA Today 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

  • Meta expands paid verification service for businesses

Meta expands paid verification service for businesses

Meta’s Verified for Business program is still in the testing phase, but many customers already benefit from its perks. The service was rolled out for the first time last year, but it was only available for businesses in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

During the initial test, Meta noticed that small businesses are looking for more tools that can help build their credibility with new audiences, which usually drives more engagement and brand growth.

Based on these findings, Meta announced that it’s expanding the test of Meta Verified for businesses on Facebook and Instagram. Starting last week, the program is available in Australia and New Zealand, and will soon be rolled out to Argentina, Chile, France, Italy, Mexico, and Peru.

Additionally, Meta promised to bring Verified to businesses on WhatsApp, but didn’t provide an ETA. This will be the third social network to get access to Meta’s Verified for Business program after Facebook and Instagram.

Last but not least, Meta announced the launch of additional subscription plans for the program. Verified for Business had just one subscription plan initially, but now it supports four in order to cover a wider range of business needs.

Starting last week, businesses in countries where the program is available can choose from the following monthly plans: $14.99, $44.99, $119.99, and $349.99.

  • Digital content exporters open foreign offices to avoid tax

Digital content exporters open foreign offices to avoid tax

Vietnamese businesses exporting digital content are setting up offices abroad to avoid the 10% value-added tax, according to the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry.

Although their exports are eligible for VAT waiver, many still have to pay the tax since “tax officials cannot differentiate between exports and domestic sales,” the VCCI said in a recent comment on a bill for amending VAT laws.

Exports of online services, such as creating smartphone apps and games, are galloping at an annual rate of 11%. Last year they were worth US$20 billion.

The VCCI said though many of these exporters provide documents to prove they sell their services abroad, tax officials refuse to acknowledge their exports.

They therefore have to set up offices overseas to avoid the VAT, it added.

The Ministry of Finance admitted there are issues as online services are “invisible” and therefore it is difficult to determine whether the companies were selling them overseas or in Vietnam.

It has proposed a discount VAT starting from 5% for these companies instead of a full waiver.

  • WhatsApp’s new status update tray with previews is rolling out more widely in beta

WhatsApp’s new status update tray with previews is rolling out more widely in beta

WhatsApp, the popular Meta-owned messaging app, is always tinkering with updates to improve the experience for its global community of users. In its newest test, WhatsApp is experimenting with how users view status updates.

Previously, to see someone’s status, you had to tap it, and then hope for the best. However, the new update adds a preview right in the status update tray, giving you the opportunity beforehand to decide whether it is worth it to engage. The preview feature definitely makes checking statuses more convenient and visual, because, instead of seeing a profile picture, you get a glimpse of what the update actually is. If it doesn’t seem interesting, you can simply move on to the next one.

This update has been in the works for a little while. Back in February, the folks at WABetaInfo reported WhatsApp was working on it. However, it seems that after some testing, they’re starting to make it available to the public.

Right now, only some beta testers are getting to see the changes, but they should expand to more users over the coming weeks. The new interface for the status updates tray is included in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.10.10 update, available on the Google Play Store.

This update is a good example of why user feedback is important. As noted by WABetaInfo in its coverage, after a previous status update that changed how things were displayed, many people weren’t happy. It seems WhatsApp listened and found a solution that makes things easier while still keeping the new look and feel of the status section.

If you’re part of the beta program, which is quite limited and almost always full to capacity, you might already have the new status tray. WhatsApp says it will be rolling this update out to even more beta testers in upcoming weeks, with wider availability to follow after the testing phase.

  • A Deep Dive into Grade A Buildings in Hong Kong

A Deep Dive into Grade A Buildings in Hong Kong

Should you rent your office in a Grade A building in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong, a dynamic metropolis known for its towering skyscrapers and lively business scene, is home to some of the world’s most prestigious commercial properties. Among these, Grade A buildings are prominent as symbols of corporate prestige and operational excellence. This article explores the essence of Grade A buildings in Hong Kong, examining their unique characteristics, advantages, and how they stand apart from other grades. Understanding these elite structures is crucial for businesses seeking top-tier office spaces in this vibrant city.

What is a Grade A Building in Hong Kong?

In the core of Hong Kong’s commercial landscape, Grade A buildings represent the peak of office real estate. But what makes them special? Their superior quality, prestigious locations, and modern facilities primarily set them apart. These buildings are often located in highly sought-after business districts like Central, Admiralty, and Wan Chai, offering prime access to major transport hubs and city amenities.

Architecturally, Grade A buildings in Hong Kong are impressive. They feature cutting-edge designs, often by renowned architects, and are equipped with advanced infrastructure. This includes high-speed elevators, robust IT connectivity, and energy-efficient systems. Their interiors are finished to the highest standards, with luxurious lobbies, ample natural light, and wide views of the cityscape.

The tenant mix in Grade A buildings is another key aspect. These towers usually house multinational corporations, top financial institutions, and prestigious law firms. This high-profile tenant base contributes to the building’s elite status and creates a dynamic business network.

Moreover, Grade A buildings offer strong security measures and professional management services. They provide a safe and efficient working environment, which is a critical factor for businesses that prioritize security and operational smoothness.

“In short, Grade A buildings in Hong Kong are more than just office spaces; they are symbols of corporate success, designed to offer an exceptional working environment. Their strategic locations, top-notch design, and comprehensive amenities set the benchmark in the commercial real estate market, making them the top choice for discerning businesses.”, mentions Michelle Tang from Bela Offices. She adds, “At Bela Offices, we strive to exceed our tenants’ expectations by offering Grade A buildings that symbolize corporate success and provide a remarkable working environment.”.

What are the Advantages of Renting Grade A Offices?

Choosing a Grade A office in Hong Kong brings a multitude of benefits, vital for businesses who are looking to enhance their corporate image and operational efficiency.

Firstly, these buildings offer addresses in renowned locations, most likely in CBDs, which is crucial for companies looking to establish a strong market presence. That will provide your business with excellent visibility and accessibility.

The superior facilities in Grade A buildings also contribute to a better working environment. Modern, ergonomic office designs ensure comfort and productivity for employees. Advanced technology infrastructure supports seamless business operations, which is essential in today’s fast-paced corporate world, especially if your business is done online. These buildings are often equipped with high-end communication tools, fast internet connectivity, and reliable power backups, ensuring that businesses run smoothly.

Sharing space with other high-profile tenants, including multinational companies and leading financial institutions, opens doors to valuable collaborations and partnerships. This environment fosters a sense of community among top-tier businesses, offering opportunities for growth and innovation.

Another significant advantage is the level of professional management and maintenance services in Grade A buildings. These services ensure a hassle-free working environment, allowing businesses to focus on their core activities. From regular cleaning to technical support, every aspect of building management is handled efficiently.

What are the Differences with Grade B and Grade C Buildings?

Grade A buildings are ideal for businesses who are looking for high standards and prime locations but they come at a higher cost. This makes them a great choice if you frequently meet with important clients. Grade B and C buildings, while more affordable, vary in quality and amenities, suiting businesses with different needs and budget considerations.

Grade B buildings are a step down from Grade A in terms of location, facilities, and overall prestige. While they are generally well-maintained, they may lack some of the cutting-edge features of Grade A buildings. They are suitable for businesses looking for good quality spaces at a more affordable price point. Grade B buildings may have older designs and fewer luxurious finishes but still provide a professional working environment.

Grade C buildings, on the other hand, are the most basic in Hong Kong’s office market. They are often older structures located further away from central business districts. These buildings typically have more basic facilities and services, and their maintenance levels can vary significantly. Grade C offices are the most economical option, suited for start-ups or businesses with limited budgets that prioritize functionality over prestige.

    Conclusion

Grade A buildings in Hong Kong are the gold standard in commercial real estate, offering unparalleled quality, facilities, and prestige. Understanding the differences with Grade B and C buildings helps businesses align their office space with their operational needs and corporate goals, ensuring success in this dynamic city.

  • TikTok, Facebook, and other foreign service providers pay $575M in taxes

TikTok, Facebook, and other foreign service providers pay $575M in taxes

According to the General Department of Taxation, foreign service providers, including Google, Facebook, and TikTok, have paid VND14.572 trillion (US$575 million) in taxes.

Data from the General Department of Taxation indicates that currently, 94 foreign service providers are registered to pay taxes through the electronic portal, and the cumulative tax amount from March 2022—when the electronic portal for foreign providers became operational—totaled VND14.572 trillion, an increase of more than VND3.5 trillion compared to the end of last year.

The list of foreign service providers who have declared and paid taxes includes Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, Netflix, and Apple.

Authorities are implementing a variety of short- and long-term strategies to enhance tax management for domestic and cross-border e-commerce. Furthermore, tax agencies are continuing to review, audit, inspect, and address violations that fail to comply with regulations.

The department said another approach is for tax agencies to work with various ministries and sectors to prevent tax revenue losses and ensure financial security.

Data released last week indicates that the tax sector now has access to bank data for 121 million personal accounts, approximately two-thirds of the 183 million personal payment accounts registered by the end of 2023, and over 9 million corporate accounts across 96 commercial banks.

Using this data, the tax authority will identify online businesses that have not declared and paid taxes for further action. Recently, many online sellers have been mandated to pay additional tax.

The tax authority plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Public Security to hasten the adoption of citizen identification documents as tax identification numbers, in accordance with the Tax Administration Law.

The agency is also exploring the use of electronic identification for organizations and individuals engaged in tax declaration and payment transactions, aimed at preventing tax evasion in e-commerce.

In 2023, the e-commerce channel paid VND97 trillion in taxes, marking a 14% increase from 2022.

  • Sacombank assures no loss on $141M loan to Bamboo Airways

Sacombank assures no loss on $141M loan to Bamboo Airways

Sacombank has assured that it will not lose the VND3.58 trillion (US$141 million) it has lent to Bamboo Airways, citing that the loans are secured by high-value assets.

The loans used to be secured by its shares and assets of property developer FLC, its former owner, Sacombank CEO Nguyen Duc Thach Diem said at its annual general meeting Friday.

But when new owners took over the airline, the bank persuaded them to pledge high-value properties in HCMC instead, and the loans are now classified as “qualified debt,” meaning they have the lowest risk of turning into bad debts, she said.

“It is certain that Sacombank will not lose the money it has lent to Bamboo Airways,” she said.

Sacombank decided to invest in the airline, which has been going through major restructuring after being sold by FLC.

In February the bank’s former deputy CEO, Phan Dinh Tue, took over as chairman of the airline.

Revenues were down 15% to VND278.6 billion.

The company aims to hire experienced drivers by paying better this year, and buy 700 new cars, mostly Toyota hybrids.

It plans to study the possibility of using three-wheel electric vehicles.

It targets revenue of VND1.1 trillion this year, down 9% from last year, and profits of VND80.5 billion, down by half.

Despite slashing its payroll in recent years the company expects to face challenges to its recovery this year.

Changi Airport Group awards OUE tender for lease and development of new hotel at Changi Airport Terminal 2

Changi Airport Group (CAG) and SGX Mainboard-listed OUE Limited (OUE) announced today that OUE has been awarded the tender by CAG for the lease and development of a new hotel to be located at Changi Airport Terminal 2 (T2). The new hotel, Hotel Indigo Changi Airport, is expected to be completed and fully operational by 2028.

Mr Lee Seow Hiang, Chief Executive Officer of CAG said, “The hotel concept proposed by OUE was the most compelling and promises to be the first zero-energy hotel in Singapore, and possibly the first for an airport hotel in the world. With travel demand continuing to soar and passenger traffic growing beyond pre-Covid levels, the new hotel will elevate the hospitality offerings at Changi Airport. It will serve our visitors well with its differentiated facilities and convenient access to T2. We congratulate OUE on being awarded the tender and look forward to a close partnership in the coming years to bring the idea for Hotel Indigo Changi Airport to life.”

Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Mr Brian Riady of OUE said, “We are very honoured to be awarded this opportunity to develop a new hotel at Changi Airport, a globally renowned aviation hub that is synonymous with innovation and excellence. We look forward to continuing our long-standing partnership with CAG, and to introducing fresh and innovative hospitality concepts to visitors of Changi Airport.”

The 255-room, 163-metre-long hotel will feature innovative design elements and modern facilities, including a rooftop day club, bar and infinity pool offering panoramic views of the runway, airport boulevard and skyline. With layers of lush rainforest and hanging epiphytes stretching over seven storeys, its design will be centred around the concept of a “Floating Forest.” The new hotel will complement the existing hotels on Changi Airport’s landside including YOTELAIR at Jewel Changi Airport and the award-winning Crowne Plaza Changi Airport located at Terminal 3, which is also owned and leased by OUE Group.

With sustainability as a core component, Hotel Indigo Changi Airport aims to achieve operational energy neutrality by incorporating sustainability features such as solar photovoltaic panels, hybrid cooling systems, naturally ventilated corridors and rainwater-harvesting technology aimed at reducing environmental impact while enhancing overall guest comfort and well-being.

“By combining energy-efficient design with low-energy operations while maximising on-site solar energy generation, Hotel Indigo Changi Airport marks a major milestone for OUE as we continually strive to find more sustainable ways to conduct our business,” said Mr Riady.

The tourism sector in Singapore has seen a rebound from pandemic levels and is expected to continue to attract visitors as the country remains a key destination for leisure and MICE. • WhatsApp is working on an option to stop notifications when someone reacts to your status updates

WhatsApp is working on an option to stop notifications when someone reacts to your status updates

WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that will allow users to manage notifications for reactions to their status updates. This means that in the future, you’ll be able to choose whether or not you want to receive an alert when someone reacts to your WhatsApp status update.

For those unfamiliar, WhatsApp statuses are temporary updates that disappear after 24 hours, similar to Instagram Stories. Users can share photos, videos, text, and voice notes as their status. They can also react to other users’ statuses with emojis. With this new feature, in the latest version of WhatsApp Beta for Android (v2.24.9.29), users will now have the option to disable notifications for these reactions, giving them more control over the alerts they receive on the platform.

This change comes amid a growing trend of messaging apps giving users more control over their notification settings. Many users find constant notifications to be distracting and overwhelming, and they appreciate the ability to customize their experience. With this update, WhatsApp is following suit and offering its users more control over how they use the app.

It’s important to note that this feature is still under development, so it’s not yet available to all WhatsApp users. However, the fact that it’s being tested suggests that it could be rolled out more widely in a future update. So, if you’re someone who finds status update reaction notifications to be annoying, you may soon have the option to turn them off.

This new feature from WhatsApp is a welcome change for users who want more control over how often their device pings them with notifications. It gives them the ability to customize their settings and avoid being bombarded with alerts for every reaction to their status updates, especially in cases where there are many contacts to keep up with.

  • 7-Eleven eyes 100,000 stores globally by 2030

    7-Eleven eyes 100,000 stores globally by 2030

Japanese retail giant Seven & I Holdings said on Tuesday it wanted to see huge growth for its 7-Eleven convenience store chain globally, and would be accelerating its entry into Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa.

It is aiming to boost the global number of 7-Eleven stores 18 per cent to about 100,000 by 2030 and for the chain to be in 30 countries and regions, up from 20 now.

The plan is part of a large-scale restructuring that involves selling off lower-performing supermarket assets – a strategy pursued after pressure from activist investors.

Since last year, the company has announced the closure of dozens of Ito-Yokado supermarkets, exited its apparel business, and completed the sale of its Sogo & Seibu department store unit. It also agreed to spend more than $2 billion to scoop up convenience stores in Australia and the United States.

7-Eleven North America chief Michael DePinto said the group will “continue to aggressively pursue opportunities” in mergers and acquisitions in the region.

ValueAct Capital, a US-based investor that has harshly criticised the company’s asset allocation and tried to expel its president, last week praised the group’s restructuring plan, saying it would vote in favour of its board nominees.

  • Google Meet now lets users make annotations during presentations

Google recently updated its Meet app with the ability to make annotations during presentations. The new feature will be enabled by default when users start presenting.

A new annotations menu where users can access various tools such as a pen, disappearing ink, sticker, text box, and more is now available in the Meet app. In addition to bringing this feature to Meet, Google also made it possible to assign a co-annotator.

To add a co-annotator, simply head to the people panel or hover over a user’s video tile, select more options (three-dot icon) and choose the “add as co-annotator” option.

According to Google, both annotating and co-annotating features are available for the following Google Workspace editions:

    • Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
    • Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
    • Frontline Starter and Standard
    • Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, and Enterprise Essentials Plus
    • Education Standard, Plus, the Teaching & Learning Upgrade
    • Workspace Individual subscribers

It’s important to mention that at the time of launch, Android users can use annotations when they present their screen and select the Entire Screen option. Unfortunately, the co-annotation feature is not available for Android users, but it will be added in a future update.

On the other hand, iOS users can’t use annotations when presenting. However, they can use annotations if they are appointed a co-annotator by a web user.

As far as availability goes, Rapid Release domains should get the new feature in the next two weeks, while Scheduled Release domains will have to wait until April 25 for the rollout to begin, which should take up to 15 days.
