Aeon Stores Hong Kong posts loss in contrary with good sales

Aeon Stores Hong Kong has recorded record half-year revenue of HK$4.93 billion ($US628 million) in sales.

The figure represents a year-on-year increase of 6.7 per cent. The group’s gross profit margin rose by 0.2 percentage points to 30.7 per cent during the period.

In its report for the June 30 half year, Aeon Stores Hong Kong said the development of new retail store types and O2O e-commerce has intensified competition in the retail market and presented challenges to the group. However, the diversification and personalisation of consumers’ lifestyles has afforded many opportunities.

During the period, the group continued to actively carry out internal restructuring and cost control, focusing on improving customer experience and operational standards, while at the same time accelerating digital marketing activities to cement its foundation for supporting future growth.

To address the intensifying competition in the market, Aeon launched a new customer relationship management system last year, introducing big data analysis to strengthen its sales and marketing platform.

Aeon’s operations in Mainland China reported a loss of HK$13.7 million during the period due to costs associated with cultivating newly-opened stores and the closure of others.

The expenses contributed to an overall loss attributable to owners of the company of HK$50.48 million ($6.43 million).

Aeon currently operates 32 stores in southern China.

  • Profit dive leads Ministop to uncertainty

Profit dive leads Ministop to uncertainty

The future ownership of South Korea’s fourth-largest convenience store chain, MiniStop Korea, is uncertain with options under review.

Parent Aeon Group of Japan is apparently tiring of falling profits from the chain and has appointed Nomura Securities to explore sale options, including a clean sale of its stake or attracting a strategic investor.

With more than 2500 stores spread across South Korea, MiniStop’s sales reached 1.18 trillion won (US$1 billion) last year.

In a statement issued this week, Aeon said: “Even though we are considering business tie-ups with other companies to improve corporate value, there are no concrete plans on selling off MiniStop Korea yet.”

Aeon currently owns 76.06 per cent of MiniStop Korea with local Daesang Group holding 20 per cent and Japan’s Mitsubishi the remaining 3.94 per cent.

Intense local competition is behind the decline in MiniStop Korea’s profitability, according to local industry sources. Profit plunged 23 per cent last year to 2.6 billion won (US$2.3 million). In 2015 the company achieved an operating profit of 13.2 billion won.

  • Aeon Wallet to be launched in August

Aeon Wallet to be launched in August

Aeon Credit Service (M) Bhd is targeting to launch its cashless payment service Aeon Wallet in August, which will become another core business segment for the group.

Aeon Credit, a subsidiary of Aeon Financial Service Co Ltd Japan, is principally engaged in consumer finance operations through provision of easy payment and hire purchase schemes for purchase of consumer durables and motor vehicles, personal financing schemes and issuance of credit cards.

Aeon Credit will be launching two new products in the current financial year ending Feb 28, 2019 (FY19), in line with the company’s digital initiatives, namely the Aeon Wallet and Aeon Member Plus Card that will provide customers with payment, privileges and benefit to complement the evolving customer lifestyle, attracting customers from all segments to go cashless.

Chief financial officer (CFO) Lee Kit Seong said the e-wallet will be another payment settlement tool for consumers in the market as it looks to first tap into its 6 million member base in the group and to have 1 million users for the e-wallet in a year.

“We’re also introducing the Aeon Member Plus Card to consolidate the loyalty programme of the Aeon group of companies in Malaysia. The e-wallet is one of the settlements like Touch ‘n Go, Alipay, and WeChat Pay. Our e-money will ultimately become mobile payment and Aeon Pay (a settlement medium like iPay88),” Lee said.

“After we expand internally, we will go externally. From e-money, we’re going to put it into a mobile wallet. We want to integrate the Aeon companies (such as Aeon, Aeon Big, Aeon Credit) in Malaysia to have one member (system). Once comfortable, we will go to the region,” added Lee.

Aeon Credit has doubled its capital expenditure (capex) to RM120 million for FY19, from RM60 million in FY18, to invest in its operations and business expansion. The capex will be utilised for its branch transformation and digital marketing initiatives, the upgrading of its system infrastructure and for the introduction of its e-money business.

Lee expects the company to maintain its momentum for FY19, with strong domestic demand being the key driver for growth, along with its transformation business model and continuous improvement in asset quality under the new MFRS9 environment.

Meanwhile, chairman Ng Eng Kiat has maintained that “it is not wrong” in relation to the additional assessments and penalties by the Inland Revenue Board totaling RM96.82 million.

“It’s an issue not just in relation to having to pay the tax. We’re taking the grounds that we’re not liable for those tax. We’re now appealing to the Special Commissioners of Income Tax,” said Ng, adding that it is also in consultation with tax agents, auditors and solicitors.

He said although IRB has raised an assessment and failure to pay by a certain time will result in penalties, winding up of the company or action against the board of directors, it has applied to the Court of Appeal against the High Court’s May decision to get a stay. The hearing has been deferred to July.

  • Aeon adopts wait-and-see approach over GST

Aeon adopts wait-and-see approach over GST

Japanese retailer AEON Co (M) Bhd is adopting a wait-and-see approach when it comes to the upcoming abolishment of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on June 1.

Executive director Poh Ying Loo said Aeon was still seeking greater clarity from the Pakatan Harapan government.

“The GST question was something that was also posed by shareholders earlier and our stand right now is that it is too early to decide right now,” Poh said at a press briefing after the group’s 33rd annual general meeting here today.

“We understand that other policies and tax regime such as the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will be reintroduced. We can’t really comment on whether of not our pricing would be cheaper until those things are made more clear,” he added.

The group has allocated between RM300 million and RM500 million in capital expenditures (capex) this year.

According to Poh, this was slightly lower than last year’s capex of some RM500 million.

“The capex is inclusive of our newest mall in Kuching, Sarawak which we have already opened in April this year,” said Poh.

With three levels of retail floors and four levels of car park, the Kuching mall is AEON’s debut presence in East Malaysia.

The remaining capex will be for the expansion of Taman Maluri Shopping Centre and the refurbishment of Tebrau City, Bandar Utama and Bandar Sunway.

As of the end of 2017, AEON has 26 malls across the country.

A big part of AEON’s drive this year is to further strengthen its omni-channel strategy that will leverage onto its physical stores for offline experiences, logistics and convenience.

“We had partnered with online concierge and delivery service Honestbee in January, and the response has been encouraging. We expect this business will grow with time,” said managing director Shinobu Washizawa.

The firm is also set to roll out a “groceries drive-thru” service in Bukit Indah, Johor whereby customers can order groceries online from Aeon and pick them up themselves through a drive-thru window, starting next month.

Aeon posted a net profit of RM105 million on the back of RM4 billion revenue for the year ended 31 December 2017.
