  • Aeon expects sales to increase 10-20% during promotion period

Aeon expects sales to increase 10-20% during promotion period

Aeon Co (M) Bhd expects sales to grow between 10% and 20% during its promotion period, the Aeon Day and Thank You Day sales promotions.

Executive director Poh Ying said the “Aeon Day” sales promotion would be held on every 8th and 28th day of the month while the “Thank You Day” on every second and last weekend of the month.

“These promotions will benefit 1.2 million Aeon members who have played a pivotal role in spurring our growth,” he said after launching the Aeon 2018 Promotions today.

He said for “Aeon Day”, members would receive RM5 cash vouchers for every RM100 spent or RM3 cash vouchers for every RM60 spent, while for “Thank You Day”, they would receive RM5 cash vouchers for every RM80 spent, RM10 cash vouchers for every RM150 spent and RM30 cash vouchers for every RM300 spent, all excluding the Goods and Services Tax.

“With the rising cost of living and the inflation, many consumers are looking for more ways to stretch their money, especially for groceries.

“The cash vouchers can help our customers obtain greater savings in the long-run,” he added.

Poh said that consumer spending sentiment this year was expected to be good due to the upcoming election as well as the implementation of measures to curb inflation.

“Along with the consumer-friendly 2018 Budget and the better ringgit, I believe these factors will drive consumer spending and the growth of the retail industry,” he added.

Meanwhile, Poh said Aeon had allocated between RM400 million and RM500 million in capital expenditure this year to be used, among others, to renovate new and existing stores in Taman Maluri, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching and Johor.

To date, Aeon operates 33 departmental stores cum supermarkets and manages and operates 26 shopping malls, three MaxValu and three MaxValu Prime supermarkets, nationwide.

  • Aeon, SoftBank, Yahoo Japan team up

Aeon, SoftBank, Yahoo Japan team up

Aeon and Yahoo Japan have not had tremendous success with their own e-commerce ventures, according to the report.

Softbank’s IT prowess is seen as key to enabling Aeon to make the most of its brick-and-mortar assets in a retail sector quickly evolving as customer data and technologies such as artificial intelligence are leveraged to create better, more personalized shopping experiences.

A teaming of these companies could also help Aeon keep up with the trend toward rolling out cashierless or unmanned stores, while helping Yahoo Japan become a more formidable, competitive e-commerce player.

As with many strategic alignments between brick-and-mortar and e-commerce retailers, this potential partnership is being seen as an attempt to build an alliance worthy of challenging the international Goliath Amazon, which has set its sights on expanding in Japan.

Physical retailers and e-commerce companies in other countries are becoming especially sensitive to Amazon’s threat as it continues to expand e-commerce interests internationally while also building up a brick-and-mortar presence through efforts like physical bookstores, Amazon Go and Whole Foods.

As the largest retailers in many countries prepare for inevitable war with Amazon, as well as one another in some cases, there are two priorities. One is to become even larger and broader through partnership, acquisition or strategic investment. The other is to have solid footholds in both e-commerce and brick-and-mortar.

Aeon, Softbank and Yahoo Japan are not the only ones evolving with these priorities in mind. We already have seen significant efforts from some of the world’s largest retailers and e-commerce players to do the same. For example, Walmart recently aligned with Japan’s Rakuten. China’s JD.com has been looking to expand into the U.S. and Europe, and fellow Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is aggressively investing in brick-and-mortar retail firms.

By getting together in one way or another, Aeon and Yahoo Japan in particular may be looking to strengthen what have been weaknesses in their respective retail and e-commerce strategies, but they also would be positioned to play the game at a whole new level — that of a retail superpower fit to tackle new opportunities at home and abroad.

  • Aeon plans foray into on-demand delivery services

Aeon plans foray into on-demand delivery services

Aeon Co (M) Bhd signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based online concierge and delivery service, honestbee, to venture into on-demand delivery services.

This new delivery option, which uses personal shoppers to pick up and deliver orders, will enable Aeon customers to make their purchases online, via honestbee mobile app or website.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Aeon executive director Poh Ying Loo said the alliance is part of the group’s strategy to speed up its e-commerce business and at the same time add value to its outlets.

Aeon joined the e-commerce bandwagon in late 2015 through its online website called shoppu.com.my, offering various product categories including electronics, fashion and household items.

Asked on how this new service will help to elevate its e-commerce sales growth, Poh said at this point of time, it is still early to determine. It was reported that the group’s online website shoppu.com.my contribution in financial year 2016 (FY16) remained marginal.

For now, Poh said the new online marketplace platform will only offer delivery service for grocery items at its flagship store, Aeon Mid Valley. He said customer who live within 17km radius from the store will enjoy a minimum one-hour delivery service.

Commenting on its future plans for e-commerce segment, Aeon managing director Shinobu Washizawa said going forward, the group will have more such innovations in the pipeline.

“In order to enhance the value for our customers by moving towards an omni-channel retailer, we want to combine our strengths with honestbee’s expertise to digitalise our customer’s shopping experience.”

“We will closely monitor the feedback and demands from our customers, and consider to expand this service both in terms of regional and in merchandise offering,” Washizawa added.

At present, Aeon has 26 malls, 33 Aeon outlets and two Maxvalu prime supermarkets across the country.

Launched in 2015, honestbee currently has presence in eight markets including Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. To date, it has 112 partners, providing more than 90,000 products across the markets.

  • Aeon Group to invest into digital space

Aeon Group to invest into digital space

Major Japanese retailer Aeon Group plans to invest ¥500 billion (US$4.4 billion) in online retail over the next three years.

Representing a 150 per cent spike in its online investments, the plan has been revealed in a new midterm business plan.

Openings of tenant stores in Japanese shopping malls have shrunk by 30 per cent in the past year, a Nikkei survey shows. Stores are also closing faster than they are opening, and malls are struggling to find replacements.

Aeon has spent 18 months mapping out its new strategy, which is intended to ensure its long-term survival. The midterm plan will be in effect until fiscal 2020.

“We will spend more on things other than brick-and-mortar stores,” Aeon president Motoya Okada said after unveiling the plan in Tokyo.

Aeon’s massive investment in technologies and services to raise its online retailing profile reflects the challenges it faces along with other traditional merchants.

Okada said the company also plans to double its investment for boosting its online business beginning in fiscal 2021.

He also said “old-fashioned” retailers have learned much from Amazon.

  • Aeon Indonesia shifts focus to entertainment

Aeon Indonesia shifts focus to entertainment

Aeon Indonesia is putting the accent on entertainment in its new mall, Jakarta Garden City.

About an hour’s drive east from the city centre, it is the Japanese retailer’s second location after two years in Indonesia.

Jakarta Garden City devotes relatively little space to traditional retail like clothing (H&M and Uniqlo will not be found there). Instead, it focuses on interactive experiences, and more than half of its 227 tenants are foodcourt stalls or restaurants.

It also house Indonesia’s first skating rink to meet international standards, a movie complex and Fanpekka, a Scandinavian-style educational center for children. On the roof is one of the country’s largest Ferris wheels.

Aeon is marketing Jakarta Garden City as Indonesia’s largest entertainment mall.

  • Tim Ho Wan Cambodia launches in Aeon Mall

Tim Ho Wan Cambodia launches in Aeon Mall

Tim Ho Wan Cambodia has launched its first Hong Kong dim sum outlet at Aeon Mall Phnom Penh, drawing on the brand’s roots as the “world’s cheapest Michelin-starred restaurant”.

Its officially launch follows a five-day soft opening that attracted about 700 diners a day, according to Tim Ho Wan Cambodia GM Chum Phirun.

Starting as a hole-in-the-wall eatery in Hong Kong’s Mong Kok district in 2009, Tim Ho Wan earned a Michelin Star in 2010, being the least expensive restaurant on the planet at the time for the French dining guide.

With this reputation, the outlet soon became a chain, expanding to 45 locations in Asia, Australia and the US. Despite this success, the restaurant failed to catch on in Malaysia.

Openings in Singapore and New York attracted queues, with customers waiting up to three hours for a table. However, Phirun says few Cambodians are aware of the dim sum chain’s fame or the significance of a Michelin Guide rating.

“The income of Phnom Penh residents is growing rapidly, and many people are now seeking hygienic, high-quality food, so we want to educate them on the advantage of a Michelin-starred restaurant like Tim Ho Wan.”

While two Hong Kong branches of the chain have a Michelin Star, the 33-table restaurant in Phnom Penh does not. It serves 24 varieties of dim sum, and Phirun says there are plans to open two more branches in the city next year.

Founders Mak Kwai Pui and Leung Fai Keung were brought to the official launch by Tim Ho Wan Cambodia director Seak Guech.
