  • Amorepacific Enters Australia

    Amorepacific Enters Australia

Korean cosmetics giant Amorepacific Group has made its Australian debut this week.

While the company has yet to open a standalone store there, it has opened a counter for its mid-range brand Laneige inside Sephora stores and started selling the range online. It describes the launch as “its forerunner to the Australian market”.

After opening a Melbourne head office last year, Amorepacific’s is making plans to launch its luxury flagship brand Amorepacific, and eco-friendly Innisfree label later this year.

Caroline Dunlop – Amorepacific Australia’s first GM, said working with Sephora in the US had proven a success and it had high expectations in their Australian partnership.

“Our journey of beauty in Australia will begin with the launch of Laneige and as we progress, we will continue to present many unique brand experiences to local customers.”

Amorepacific is ramping up its international expansion to compensate for a sharp decline in the number of Chinese tourists into South Korea.

“I am very excited to meet with Australian customers after a long preparation,” Suh Kyung-bae, chairman of Amorepacific Group, said.

Australia’s cosmetics market was estimated at about 7 trillion won (US$6.56 billion) in 2016, with an average annual growth rate of 5 per cent, the company said, citing data from market research house Euromonitor.

In a statement, Amorepacific said it has studied the advanced beauty market in Australia and its customers over several years. “The study revealed that Australian customers are indeed very beauty conscious with a keen interest in global trends and innovation developed particularly to protect against strong UV rays and other environmental factors that can cause skin damage. It was also found that their preference for a natural makeup look with healthy skin has led to a growing interest in Korean beauty trends (K-beauty).”

The Chinese tourist challenge has affected Amorepacific’s earnings, which last year fell 39.7 per cent.

  • Bank of Indonesia Expects Rupiah to Strengthen

Bank of Indonesia Expects Rupiah to Strengthen

Bank Indonesia expects the rupiah to continue to strengthen and currency market volatility to subside as market price in expected US Federal Reserve’s interest rate hikes, a senior official said on Wednesday (14/03).

“The fundamental level of an exchange rate is not a fix level, but I can say that the current level is not [the rupiah’s] fundamental and it should be stronger than now,” said Doddy Zulverdi, who heads the monetary management department at Bank Indonesia (BI) and is also one of the candidates to become a member of BI’s board of governors.

Doddy reiterated BI’s commitment to intervene in the market to guard the rupiah against volatility. He said the recent weakness has had limited impact on exports, but has likely had a bigger effect on holding back imports.

The rupiah touched a two year low of 13,800 a dollar earlier this month. It was trading at 13,731 per dollar on 0400 GMT Wednesday.

  • Vietnam wants exclusion from US steel tariffs

Vietnam wants exclusion from US steel tariffs

The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) has urged the US Government to consider excluding Vietnamese products from its newly announced tariff measures on imported steel and aluminium.

The ministry stressed that Vietnamese steel and aluminium products sold to the US are intended for use in civil construction, not for infrastructure or security-defence purposes, thus not affecting the US goal of ensuring its national security.

Moreover, Vietnam’s steel and aluminium products account for just a marginal proportion of US imports of those products, and neither cause nor threaten to cause damage to the US steel and aluminium industries, the MoIT said.

The ministry will continue to keep close watch on the situation and consider subsequent actions to ensure the legitimate interests of Vietnamese enterprises, while maintaining the growing trend of the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the US.

US President Donald Trump, on March 8, signed proclamations to impose a 25 percent tariff on imported steel and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum.

  • PolyU partners with Alibaba to create AI for fashion retailers

PolyU partners with Alibaba to create AI for fashion retailers

Students from Hong Kong’s PolyU have partnered with Alibaba Group’s Vision and Beauty Team to develop AI technology for fashion retailers.

The students, from the Institute of Textiles and Clothing (ITC) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, have created the first-of-its-kind “FashionAI Dataset” for systematic analysis and labelling of fashion images based on “fashion attributes” (fashion characteristics) and “key points” of an apparel.

PolyU explains that by integrating fashion knowledge and machine learning formulation, the establishment of the dataset will enable machines to better understand fashion, “bringing a new horizon to the fashion retail industry through the application of AI”.

“Transforming fashion knowledge into determination of fashion related attributes and fashion item categorisation of the fashion image database is a very complicated and challenging task, while it is the most fundamental task in deep learning applications,” explains Calvin Wong, Cheng Yik Hung professor in fashion and associate Head of ITC.

“ITC is pleased to collaborate with Alibaba to address the needs of fashion retailers and consumers.”

Menglei Jia, senior staff engineer with Alibaba’s Vision and Beauty team, believes there is huge potential for AI applications in the fashion industry.

“In order for AI to understand fashion, which could be very subjective, we need to turn fashion knowledge and experience into language that machine can understand. We hope to work with academics and the industry alike to explore the wider applications of AI in scenarios including fashion mix-and-match, assisting design and shopping guide, with the aim to bring new values to the fashion industry.

“The traditional fashion sector should embrace the new retail practice, and we hope FashionAI can be a bridge that connects AI with fashion.”

Challenges presented by data on fashion image

Current fashion image searching technology used on online platforms is based on the whole fashion image to search the exact or other similar images.  However if a customer is interested in some particular fashion attributes of a fashion image and wants to search other fashion items with these attributes, the current searching technology cannot meet the needs of the customer. This greatly limits the potential development and applications for offering more customised shopping experience, PolyU explains.

From an AI research perspective, this limitation of the current image searching technology is caused by the absence of available fashion image dataset constructed with both fashion professional knowledge and fulfils the requirement of deep learning, ie: the current technology is unable to train a machine to accurately understand and recognise the fashion attributes of each fashion image.

Addressing the needs of fashion retailers

Fostering the application of AI in the fashion industry, a PolyU research team led by Professor Wong, worked closely with Alibaba to develop “FashionAI Dataset” to solve two fundamental problems of the deep learning algorithm: “apparel key points detection” and “attribute recognition”.

Key points (e.g. neckline, cuff, waistline) and fashion attributes (e.g. sleeve length, collar type, skirt style) build the foundation for machine learning in understanding fashion images. The establishment of key points and fashion attribute database enables the computer to effectively and efficiently understand the fashion image which is fundamental for deep learning and recognition algorithms.

The accuracy of key points detection is determined by several factors such as the dimension and shape of the apparel, distance and angle of shooting, or even how the apparel is displayed or the model is posing in a photo. These factors can lead to poor key points detection and result in an inaccurate analysis of fashion images by the computer. Accurate key points detection can therefore improve the performance of deep learning algorithms.

Fashion attributes are the basic design elements of an apparel, and their combination determines the product category and styles of a fashion item. With the wide variety of fashion attributes, attribute recognition is a complicated process. A systemic classification of fashion attributes is essential to accurately label fashion attributes, facilitating research on deep learning and algorithm design for fashion image searching, navigating tagging and mix-and-match ideas, etc.

The Dataset can greatly facilitate understanding fashion images and related algorithm design, and developing machine learning. It would help improve the accuracy of online fashion image searching, enhance effectiveness of cross-selling and up-selling, create innovative buying experience and facilitate customisation of online shopping platforms.

    Global challenge

PolyU and Alibaba will host two world-first events – the AIFT Conference and FashionAI Global Challenge – with the aim of bringing a new horizon to the fashion retail industry through the application of AI and encouraging knowledge exchange among practitioners.

The AIFT Conference, to be held from July 3-6 at PolyU, is a first-of-its-kind academic conference to bring together researchers, engineers and practitioners to share their insights on the most updated development and applications of AI and fashion.

This event will become an annual activity for academic exchange and networking with like-minded individuals who are redefining the world of AI and fashion, and advancing AI research in fashion and textile.

The FashionAI Challenge invites worldwide AI researchers and developers to solve two imminent issues on the application of AI in fashion with over 400,000 images with high-quality annotations from Alibaba ecommerce platforms. The competition offers a prize pool of RMB 1.34 million. The FashionAI Global Challenge 2018 runs from now until April and is open to the public.

  • Vietnam’s MobiFone, AVG cancel acquisition agreement

Vietnam’s MobiFone, AVG cancel acquisition agreement

Vietnam Mobile Telecom Services Corporation (MobiFone) and shareholders of multimedia company Audio Visual Global (AVG) on Monday decided to cancel the share transfer agreement between the two companies.

The decision was made several days after the Party Central Committee (PCC)’s Secretariat asked the Government to soon release the inspection results of a VNĐ8.89 trillion (US$395 million) acquisition by communications giant Mobifone

Accordingly, MobiFone and AVG agreed to cancel the transfer of 344.66 million shares and refund each other the amount received under the agreement.

AVG shareholders will refund the entire amount paid by MobiFone, while MobiFone will return to AVG the number of shares and assets transferred. At the same time, the two sides will try to not let the other party suffer more damages.

Phạm Nhật Vũ, representative of AVG in the negotiations with MobiFone, agreed not to impose a fine and claim compensation while cancelling the deal.

In addition to the amount paid to AVG, MobiFone said it had to pay some related expenses, such as hiring consultants. AVG has agreed to share this expense with MobiFone.

AVG has made a deposit of VNĐ450 billion to proceed the agreement cancelation, MobiFone said in a press release on Tuesday.

According to the AVG representative, there are many reasons for them to cancel the contract. First, since its acquisition, MobiFone has not operated and developed the AVG brand as planned and missed many opportunities and potential of AVG.

Second, Vũ said since the contract was in effect, MobiFone had paid 95 per cent of the contract value. The deadline was over but MobiFone had not yet fulfilled its obligations to pay the remaining 5 per cent despite repeated requests by AVG.

Since the inspection of the contract, the process of operating the AVG brand had caused many problems, damaging the reputation of both the parties. According to MobiFone and AVG, the cancellation of the contract is aimed at salvaging the damage.

At the meeting, a MobiFone leader said the inspection process had impacted the completion of payment to AVG. He also said due to problems faced by AVG, the market had changed and MobiFone was not able to concentrate on developing AVG.

In early 2016, Mobifone formally announced the acquisition of AVG to expand its television network, one of the company’s four main business areas. The details of the deal, however, were not disclosed.

At the beginning of August 2016, the Government promulgated Document No 1344/TTg, asking the Government Inspectorate to investigate the acquisition. The Inspectorate found serious violations in the acquisition.

Last Thursday, the Party Central Committee’s Office issued official letter No 6106-CV/VPTW on the handling of Mobifone’s acquisition of 95 per cent of AVG shares, which says that this is a serious, complicated and sensitive matter.

The Secretariat said that the Government and the Inspectorate must be responsible for reviewing and settling cases in an objective and accurate manner under the law to ensure that punishment is given to the right person and lost State assets are revoked.

  • Thomson Reuters launches bitcoin sentiment gauge

Thomson Reuters launches bitcoin sentiment gauge

Thomson Reuters Corp is to track and analyse chatter about bitcoin on hundreds of news and social media websites to help investors looking for an edge in trading the world’s biggest cryptocurrency, the company said today.

A new version of its MarketPsych Indices, which it runs in conjunction with MarketPsych Data LLC, a behavioural economics research firm, will scan over 400 websites, many specific to cryptocurrencies, to capture market-moving sentiment and themes, Thomson Reuters said in a statement.

Digging through market chatter and analysing online sentiment has long proven popular among traders of traditional asset classes.

The boom in the prices of cryptocurrencies in recent years has spurred a huge online industry where individuals exchange trading ideas in forums and news websites report on the latest developments in the industry.

Many analysts have linked online activity, for example Google searches for “bitcoin”, with the price of the best-known cryptocurrency.

“News and social media are driving the investment and risk management process more than ever with the continuing rise of passive and quant-driven trading,” said Austin Burkett, global head of quant and feeds, Thomson Reuters.

Bitcoin’s price gained more than 1,300% last year as investors piled in, and since peaking at close to US$20,000 (RM78,000) in December has lost more than half its value. It was trading at around US$9,600 on the Luxembourg-Bitstamp exchange today.

  • Ant Financial CTO: New technologies will bring more equal opportunities to all

Ant Financial CTO: New technologies will bring more equal opportunities to all

Ant Financial Services Group (“Ant Financial” or “Ant”) yesterday participated in Money20/20 Asia industry event, where chief technology officer and chief operations officer of global business group, Cheng Li presented the opening keynote speech to an audience of 1800 gathered at the city state.

    Equal opportunities

Citing the examples of a herdsman and a small merchant whose store is located at the foot of Mount Everest 5200m above sea level, Cheng went on to explain how technology is pathing the way for such communities to now enjoy financial services that were previously closed to them. When China started moving into the mobile age a few years ago, Ant Financial began looking at improving offline payment options so that small merchants who could not afford expensive point-of-sales systems can enjoy efficient, cheap and secure payment too. This gave birth to the use of what is now a familiar sight in many of China’s highly-developed cashless cities – scanning QR codes. Using only simple but highly efficient and secure technologies, Ant Financial has enabled even the smallest of merchants to accept payment, anywhere, anytime.

    B.A.S.I.C

Speaking on the B.A.S.I.C that forms the building blocks of Ant’s technologies, Cheng went on to explain the importance of each: blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), security, Internet of Things, and computing as Ant rolled out one new product after another, guided by its mission of bringing equal opportunities through technology. From using blockchain as the new trust mechanism to improve the transparency and traceability of ecommerce supply chains or charity funds, to using artificial intelligence to reduce Ant’s payment risk to less than one in one million, or answering millions of customer inquiries a day, Ant is showing how new technology can be applied to their business to solve previously challenging issues.

    Future challenges

While Cheng remained positive of the future, there are challenges that lie ahead. With increasingly connected intelligent things generating huge IoT data stream, one of Ant’s biggest challenges is making machines understand the ultra-complex financial system well enough to provide financial services in a more efficient and inclusive way.

Cheng Li will be due to speak again at the Ant Technology Exploration Conference (ATEC). Led by Cheng Li, the ATEC sessions will see domain experts within Ant Financial and key partner companies deepdive into the B.A.S.I.C. model. The Ant Technology Exploration Conference will take place on March 14, 2018, from 1530 hrs – 1830 hrs at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 4, main stage.
