Bamboo Airways to launch first US route this month

Startup airline Bamboo Airways has completed the necessary procedures to begin its first direct flight to the U.S. starting Sep. 23, set to be the first Vietnamese airline to do so.

The airline stated it has received licenses from U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to conduct 12 return flights between the two countries from this month until November.

It will connect Hanoi and Da Nang City with San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle-Tacoma.

Also starting Sep. 23, the airline of real estate developer FLC will begin a series of events in the U.S. including signing memorandums with San Francisco and Los Angeles airports and opening its first representative office in the U.S.

Bamboo Airways in May received permits for charter flights from Vietnam to the U.S.

The U.S. is considered one of the most difficult aviation markets in the world with stringent safety regulations from the TSA.

Bamboo Airways is the second Vietnamese airline to have acquired permits from the TSA, with the first being Vietnam Airlines which is set to start its first U.S. route next month.

Vietnamese authorities first wanted to open direct services to the U.S. 18 years ago. However, concerns about profitability have kept airlines from realizing the goal.

  • Bamboo Airways, Vietjet suspend regular flights

Bamboo Airways, Vietjet suspend regular flights

Bamboo Airways, Vietjet, and Pacific Airlines have suspended most of their regular routes amid a surging number of Covid-19 cases that have seen demand plunge.

Bamboo Airways will cease all regular flights for two weeks from July 26 to August 7 amid the severe spread of the disease and social distancing measures imposed in major cities, it stated.

Websites of Vietjet and Pacific Airlines on Tuesday showed few or no flights between popular destinations like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang.

Most passenger flights between HCMC and Hanoi have been canceled since July 23 as the capital imposed strict social distancing.

Vietnam Airlines is the only carrier operating on this route with a maximum of two flights a day allowed.

Between June 19 and July 18, the number of flights plunged 84.6 percent to 3,772, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).

Vietnam has recorded 105,287 local Covid-19 patients in 62 cities and provinces since the new wave started three months ago.

  • Vietnam Embassy requests hastening nonstop Bamboo Airways flight to US

Vietnam Embassy requests hastening nonstop Bamboo Airways flight to US

The Vietnam Embassy in the U.S. expects further favorable conditions from US agencies for Bamboo Airways to operate its inaugural non-stop flight connecting Vietnam and the States.

In the official dispatch on July 9, the embassy expresses its gratitude to the Department of Homeland Security, Department of State, and Federal Aviation Administration for supporting and facilitating flights to repatriate thousands of Vietnamese citizens stranded in the U.S. due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

While international commercial flights remain suspended, Bamboo Airways has been granted permission to conduct charter flights to transport goods and passengers to the U.S., the foreign mission of Vietnam emphasized.

Regarding the plan, the embassy requests continued support from all concerned parties. On Nov. 6, 2020, Bamboo Airways was licensed to conduct flights connecting the States and Vietnam by the U.S. Department of Transport. On June 23, 2021, the airline submitted the necessary documents to the Federal Aviation Administration of the U.S. to complete procedures for its first charter flight.

“The embassy would appreciate it if the relevant U.S. agencies could consider all the submitted documents by the Bamboo Airways on June 23 at their earliest convenience,” the dispatch stated.

In fact, Bamboo Airways was officially designated to exploit charter flights to the U.S. in May 2021. The airline has acquired slots to conduct regular non-stop flights from Ho Chi Minh City to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

As of now, Bamboo Airways has fulfilled technical requirements to conduct non-stop charter flights to the U.S. with its wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.

The airline is rushing to establish a representative office in the U.S., in cooperation with San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.

According to a Bamboo Airways representative, the carrier is working with U.S. agencies to complete procedures for its first non-stop flight to depart at the end of July or early August.

Bamboo Airways has officially entered into cooperation with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to pilot the digital health passport IATA Travel Pass, marking significant progress in the airline’s preparation for international routes reopening. Besides, the carrier is implementing Covid-19 vaccinations for all employees and related affiliates, creating perimeter protection for seamless operation. Bamboo Airways’s Covid-19 prevention process is considered the most comprehensive and effective, achieving an absolute level of 7/7.

  • Bamboo Airways to trial digital health pass

Bamboo Airways to trial digital health pass

Bamboo Airways officially entered into cooperation with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to trial the IATA Travel Pass, laying a solid foundation for the airline’s reopening of international routes.

In coordination with IATA, Bamboo Airways will begin preparations to trial the IATA Travel Pass on international flights in the coming months. With this move, Bamboo Airways demonstrates its commitment to relaunching international routes, opening borders safely as well as reviving the battered tourism industry.

IATA Travel Pass is a digital health wallet where passengers can upload and share their Covid-19 tests and vaccination certificates for travel. Health information is an essential factor for both governments and carriers to conduct safe flights during and after the pandemic.

The IATA Travel Pass is considered a safer and more effective solution compared to current paper-based procedures, especially when it comes to a multitude of test and vaccination data that needs securing.

The app has been developed with the highest levels of data privacy and security, so passengers always remain in control of their Covid-19 health information. Besides, governments can be confident that passengers who are OK to Travel are in full compliance of Covid-19 travel requirements, said Nick Careen, IATA senior vice president for Airports, Passenger, Cargo and Security. To create the digital health wallet, passengers download the IATA Travel Pass app, and register a digital identity using their passports. Once passengers have been tested and/or vaccinated, labs will securely send data to the individual’s app. It then verifies this information and checks that passengers meet the travel requirements for their destination. If they do, they will receive an “OK to Travel.” Passengers can also choose to share this with airlines and authorities.

By ensuring passengers meet Covid-19 health requirements for their destination, Travel Pass will facilitate more seamless transportation, playing a crucial role in the reopening of international routes in the near future.

As of June, more than 60 airlines in the world have announced the pilot of IATA Travel Pass, including Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airlines, Air New Zealand, Air Serbia, Emirates, Etihad, Ethiopian Airlines, Iberia, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, et

As a member of IATA, Bamboo Airways is closely collaborating with the body, authorities and related units to pilot the Travel Pass app in line with government regulations on “digital health passports” or “vaccine passports”. With this trial, Bamboo Airways aims to establish an area to check the compliance of passengers at the airport and provide the government with valid information to ensure safe flights and repel the pandemic.

Bamboo Airways is promoting the digital transformation process and effectively fulfilling the market demand and practical requirements of a “new normal” phase.

“Alongside the valuable partnership with IATA, it’s our conviction that Bamboo Airways will substantially contribute to the revival and sustainable development of aviation in the future,” said Dang Tat Thang, CEO of Bamboo Airways.

Thang believes the tech solution would be the cornerstone of international routes reopening, especially Bamboo Airways’ non-stop flights connecting Vietnam and the U.S.

Bamboo Airways has successfully conducted many repatriation charter flights from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, the Philippines, Poland, Norway, etc. The airline is also completing procedures to launch non-stop flights to many countries in Asia-Pacific, including Australia, exploit the European market, and gather pace in the operation of non-stop flights connecting Vietnam and the U.S. as soon as the government allows. Complying with the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on the three-phase plan for restarting international routes, Bamboo Airways has prepared a corresponding scheme and suitable strategy based on close observation of the market and pandemic.

At the same time, Bamboo Airways is implementing Covid-19 vaccinations for all employees and related affiliates.

Bamboo Airways strictly complies with disease prevention measures as guided by the National Steering Committee for the Prevention of Covid-19, the Ministry of Health, the Steering Committee of the Ministry of Transport, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, including temperature screenings at the airport, providing hand sanitizers and masks at check-in areas, departure gates and on planes, spraying disinfectant after flights, regularly maintaining HEPA filters on aircraft, etc.

As of now, Bamboo Airways’ Covid-19 prevention process is considered the most comprehensive and effective, achieving an absolute level of 7/7 by Airlines Ratings.

Bamboo Airways currently operates over 60 domestic and international routes, transporting 7.5 million passengers on safe flights. The airline has also maintained the highest on-time flight rate in Vietnam’s aviation market in three years up to 2021.

The airline’s international 5-star standard-oriented service has been recognized by domestic and international passengers and media with a customer satisfaction rate of 4.5/5. Bamboo Airways was honored as Vietnam’s Best Airline, Asia’s Leading Regional Airline, and the favorite airline voted for by golfers.

  • Bamboo Airways to launch US transit flights

Bamboo Airways to launch US transit flights

Private budget carrier Bamboo Airways plans to open flight routes to the U.S. with transit in Taiwan or Japan starting Q3.

The airline has proposed to the U.S. Department of Transportation that is allowed to operate regular connecting flights – four to seven a week – carrying passengers and goods between Hanoi and HCMC to Los Angeles and San Francisco. The flights will have one transit point at Taiwan’s Taipei, or Japan’s Osaka or Nagoya.

The flights would use the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

The proposal marks a change in plans because the carrier had been hitherto mentioning plans to launch direct flights between Vietnam and the U.S. It had acquired last month slots to operate regular direct flights from HCMC to San Francisco and Los Angeles starting September 1.

The carrier is rushing to complete the final steps in the process of building its personnel apparatus, including pilot and flight crew training, for the direct flights, it had said.

Bamboo Airways chairman Trinh Van Quyet had said the airline is considering an initial public offering of shares in the U.S. this year to raise $200 million.

The IPO offering a 5-7 percent stake in the company is also expected to launch in Q3.

It plans to expand its fleet from 30 aircraft to 40 this year and launch flights to other new destinations like Australia, Germany, Japan, and the U.K. if the Covid-19 pandemic is brought under control.

It currently flies 60 domestic routes.

Last year, it carried over seven million passengers to account for a 20 percent market share, and hopes to increase it to 30 percent this year.

The carrier’s pre-tax profit last year rose by 30 percent year-on-year to VND390 billion ($17 million). Its total assets value at the end of 2020 was nearly VND13.4 trillion.

  • Bamboo Airways on 5-star roadmap

    Bamboo Airways on 5-star roadmap

Dubbed the most intriguing airline startup in 2020 by Forbes, Bamboo Airways is now among three leading carriers in Vietnam, proving an ideal option for a 5-star oriented flight experience.

Inspired by its founder’s dream of exploring the sky at the age of 19, Bamboo Airways was established as the torchbearer leading Vietnamese airline service to the next level. Hence, the international 5-star rating has become Bamboo Airways’ ultimate goal since its earliest days.

Bamboo Airways adheres to its target of quickly updating service quality and getting 5-star certification by 2023. Therefore, the airline has entered into official cooperation with Yates and Partners, the world’s premier aviation and hospitality consultancy with the most experience in 5-star service consultation and guest experience design. Bamboo Airways has taken drastic actions in achieving its initial goal, even during this period of turmoil for both domestic and international aviation.

Only 10 airlines have achieved the international 5-star rating in the world, accounting for roughly 4 percent. That number demonstrates the level of difficulty in reaching the 5-star rating as encountered by every airline, even in countries with the most developed aviation industry.

Each carrier will identify and promote one or several decisive strengths. Qatar Airways takes the top spot in the “World’s Best Business Class” category. Singapore Airlines leads in the “World’s Best Cabin Crew” and the “World’s Best First Class.” Meanwhile, Hainan Airlines is rated the “World’s Best Business Class Amenities” airline.

Bamboo Airways has identified two of its initial goals on the 5-star roadmap, which are “the airline with the best customer service” and “airline with best business lounges.”

    “5-star human” resources

In the roadmap towards an international 5-star rating, numerous strict flight attendant requirements are mapped out regarding standard TOEIC score, appearance, BMI (Body Mass Index), female attendant number, etc.

Bamboo Airways has selected and provided standardized training courses for its very first cabin crew, passing numerous criteria like communication skills, English proficiency, customer service, first aid…

Flight attendants must reach a height above 1.7 meters (for males), and above 1.6 meters (for females) with an arm reach of at least 2.12 meters. The airline also focuses on criteria for appearance, customer interaction, problem-solving skills, taking women’s tenderness as the basic standard for customer service on each flight.

“Bamboo Airways always prioritizes the sense of hospitality and responsibility when selecting its ‘sky ambassadors’. As Bamboo Airways aims to provide “more than just a flight” experience, its flight attendants need to provoke passengers’ feelings of trust, being secured and cared for through words, actions and professional problem-solving skills,” said Le Dang Khoa, captain of Bamboo Airways’ cabin crew.

A hand on the heart with a broad smile has become the symbol of Bamboo Airways at every customer touchpoint, from ticket offices, waiting rooms to boarding gates.

First Vietnamese private airline to operate business lounges

In addition, Bamboo Airways has put its business lounge system into operation. In 2020, Bamboo Airways became the first Vietnamese private airline to launch a business lounge at Noi Bai International Airport and Con Dao Airport.

The business lounge is a crucial customer touchpoint at airports for not only carriers but also business enterprises. Now, more and more leading banks in Vietnam aim to operate business lounges at airports to provide customer services for VIP guests.

Acknowledging the importance of this customer touchpoint, Bamboo Airways has standardized its 5-star oriented business lounge service at airports. It offers first-class amenities and services, from restaurant-quality dishes, smoking and working areas to stunning runaway views.

Despite the demanding period for the aviation industry, Bamboo Airways has constantly developed and expanded its lounge system at numerous domestic airports such as in Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc, etc. to provide consistent 5-star oriented services to customers.

Even in the process of fleet expansion, the customer experience factor remains Bamboo Airways’ priority when choosing aircraft, apart from other factors that control the exploitation of resources.

For instance, Bamboo Airways is a pioneer in utilizing Embraer jets in Vietnam. Built by the world’s third-largest manufacturer of civil aircraft, Embraer 190 and 195 not only attribute to Bamboo Airways’ monopoly on routes connecting Con Dao but also turns the airline into the first and only carrier to provide business class services to Con Dao.

Bamboo Airways has made substantial investments in fleet expansion and pilot training courses to achieve excellent service quality. In 2019, Bamboo Airways welcomed the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner to its fleet, becoming the first Vietnamese private carrier to operate wide-body aircraft.

Besides modern narrow-body aircraft like the A320NEO and A321NEO, Bamboo Airways expanded its fleet to 30 aircraft with the constantly upcoming Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, aiming to increase capacity and service quality.

Highly evaluated core value and service mindset

According to aviation experts, passenger expectations regarding an airline service derives from the carrier’s prestige.

In cooperation with Bamboo Airways, the chairman of Yates and Partners highly evaluated the airline’s core value and service mindset, which are important factors for any carrier in the path towards the international 5-star rating.

Consultants of Yates and Partners will accompany Bamboo Airways on a long-term roadmap, supporting the airline in setting international 5-star service standards at all customer touchpoints, including standards for business and economy class services, F&B strategies, catering services on each flight, personnel training for staff and cabin crew on domestic and international flights.

Bamboo Airways plans US IPO in Q3

Private carrier Bamboo Airways is considering an initial public offering of shares in the U.S. this year to raise $200 million.

The IPO is expected to take place in the third quarter, with the company likely to offer a 5-7 percent stake to secure a market capitalization of up to $4 billion, quoted its chairman, Trinh Van Quyet, as saying on Wednesday.

It is preparing for the issuance together with an international auditing firm and plans to list on the New York Stock Exchange.

Last month, Quyet had announced the airlines’ plans to list 105 million shares on either the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange or Hanoi Stock Exchange at an initial price of VND60,000 ($2.61), but on Wednesday he said that has now become “a backup plan.”

“The US IPO will be part of our efforts to expand our services globally.”

It expected to operate charter flights to the U.S. from July this year and thrice-weekly commercial flights from HCMC to San Francisco from September.

The airline has received a permit from the U.S. Department of Transportation to carry passengers and cargo to that country.

This year it also plans to expand its fleet from 30 aircraft to 40, and launch flights to other new destinations like Australia, Germany, Japan, and the U.K. if the Covid-19 pandemic is under control.

It currently flies on 60 domestic routes.

  • Bamboo Airways warned for overselling tickets

Bamboo Airways warned for overselling tickets

Vietnam’s aviation authorities have ordered Bamboo Airways to stop selling tickets for the wrong flight slots after many passengers complained of canceled and delayed flights.

Each airline has an allocated number of flight slots, meaning a specific period of time wherein an aircraft can take off or land at an airport depending on the latter’s capacity, but Bamboo Airways has sold tickets for slots that it does not have, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).

In recent weeks customers have been complaining about Bamboo Airways frequently canceling or delaying flights, especially on the Hanoi-Da Nang route.

On March 4, the budget carrier published a public apology over its changing of schedules, blaming it on maintenance work happening at the Noi Bai International Airport.

However, a representative of Noi Bai airport said the maintenance work had finished earlier and that flight schedules were not affected by it.

The CAAV has informed Bamboo Airways that if it ignored the warning and continued to offer tickets for the wrong flight slots, the carrier will not get more slots for six months.

In January, Bamboo Airways, Vietjet, and Vietnam Airlines all received warnings for selling tickets for the wrong slots for the annual Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday.

Bamboo Airways adds A321NEO ACF to fleet

The brand new aircraft model Airbus A321NEO ACF (also known as Airbus Cabin Flex) with number VN-A222 departing from Hamburg, Germany, landed at Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi, at 6 a.m. on February 7, officially joining Bamboo Airways’s fleet.

Airbus A321NEO ACF is the first narrow-body aircraft to join Bamboo Airways’s fleet in 2021, following the Embraer modern jet that did so in January 2021.

With the addition of A321NEO ACF aircraft, Bamboo Airways will be operating A320/A321NEO fleet of 10 aircraft, together with wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft and regional jet Embraer 190, 195.

The airline plans to expand its fleet to 100 aircraft by 2025, including at least 30 A321NEO aircraft under the purchase agreement signed with Airbus. After landing at Noi Bai, Bamboo Airways A321NEO ACF was disinfected in accordance with standard regulations and instructions from the government.

The entire aircraft was sprayed and sanitized thoroughly in 30 minutes, with special focus on items and areas which are commonly touched by passengers such as dining tables, handrails, entertainment screens, etc.

“Safety of pandemic prevention is always the ultimate goal of Bamboo Airways in all operating processes. Therefore, the comprehensive sterilization process is strictly followed by the airline to ensure that A321neo ACF aircraft meets the safety standards before being put into service,” said a representative of Bamboo Airways.

As the newest aircraft in the A320 family, A321NEO ACF has an upgrade in cabin structure that enhances efficiency and hardware interior, advantaging both the operator and passengers.

It is equipped with a cutting-edge engine, allowing at least 16 percent cut in fuel consumption, up to 75 percent reduction of noise and 50 percent of emissions cut.

The aircraft is being addressed by Airbus as the base for the airline to continue developing a line of narrow-body aircraft for longer flight routes such as the A321LR.

Bamboo Airways adjusts an additional upgrade of seating space, legroom, reclining as well as aisle area to suit Vietnamese passengers.

Bamboo Airways reduces the A321NEO ACF passenger cabin design to 223 seats, instead of the original 244 seats, comprising two classes of business and economy. The interior design is sophisticated and prevalent, delivering the brand identity of the airline.

Along with the sterilization and disinfection of aircraft, amid the pandemic, Bamboo Airways always implements a full range of prevention measures to ensure maximum safety for passengers and crew members.

Dining tables in the cabin’s seats were turned over, the storage compartment, the toilet were also opened to be sprayed with disinfectants in every corner. The disinfection solution used was CH2200, applied according to medical standards and proven not to affect passengers’ health.
    `
As soon as completing the fumigation procedure, A321NEO ACF aircraft will be put into operation in many key routes to meet the travel demand in the Lunar New Year and early spring. To this date, Bamboo Airways has not recorded any employee positive for Covid-19.

In the morning of February 7, at Rach Gia airport, Bamboo Airways also held the opening ceremony of Hanoi – Rach Gia route, officially marking the milestone of Bamboo Airways as the first airline in history to operate direct flights connecting the capital with Rach Gia.

This is a continuation to the airline’s launch of Ho Chi Minh City – Rach Gia route on February 4, 2021.

In recent years, Bamboo Airways has implemented numerous programs and services, helping passengers to save travel costs and have safe travel options during the complicated and unexpected pandemic.

For example, the Bamboo Pri-Flight charter service allows passengers group of under 20 people to rent a full flight using Bamboo Airways narrow-body jets.

Customers can freely choose the itinerary and departure time, guaranteed social distancing, prioritize fast check-in and in-flight service with business-class standards, combined with the most convenient, private and secure flight experience.

Bamboo Airways has operated over 50 routes, transporting nearly 7 million passengers with absolute safety.

In 2020, the airline has operated more than 40 percent of capacity compared to 2019 and maintained the leading rate of on-time performance in Vietnam’s aviation industry.

Bamboo Airways was also voted as “The Airline with the Best Service”, “The leading regional Airline in Asia.” The airline aims to occupy 30 percent of domestic aviation market share by 2021.

Con Dao has a 3C classification, meaning it can only receive ATR 72 and other similar aircraft. It closes at night since it lacks a runway lighting system.

Property developer FLC, the parent company of Bamboo Airways, has sought to invest in a lighting system so that the airport could operate at night.

Con Dao received 400,000 visitors last year.
