    Bamboo Airways gets license, to start flying before year end

    Vietnam’s newest airline, Bamboo Airways, has received its long-awaited aviation license and plans to launch its first flight within the next 45 days. The carrier, the country’s fifth, is allowed to operate 10 aircraft on both domestic and international routes and to carry passengers and cargo on its flights.

    It plans to fly on 100 routes, connecting Vietnam’s major cities with popular domestic and international tourist destinations.

    But initially it is likely to only operate on certain sectors like Hanoi-Quy Nhon and Ho Chi Minh City-Quy Nhon. Quy Nhon is a city on the central coast.

    According to Bamboo Airways general director Dang Tat Thang, most of the preparatory works have been completed for the maiden flight to take off before the end of the year.

    It needs to obtain an aircraft operator certificate and obtain permission for parking and selling tickets, which are expected to take 30-45 days from the date of license issuance.

    Bamboo Airways was founded by Vietnamese private firm FLC in mid-2017 with a charter capital of VND700 billion ($30 million), which it increased to VND1.3 trillion ($55.68 million) recently.

    The airline has signed deals to buy 24 Airbus A320neo and 20 Boeing B787-9 Dreamliner aircraft worth a total of about $8.6 billion.

    According to an FLC Group spokesperson, the first passengers will be offered various discounts on services offered by FLC Group such as golfing and accommodation at its resorts.

    Bamboo Airways will become Vietnam’s fifth airline.

    Dinh Viet Thang, general director of the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV), said his agency has not granted the airline an operating license and it is still under consideration.

    This month the airline increased its charter capital to over $56 million with a fresh infusion of $26 million.

    The airfreight project, which has a 50-year operating license, is expected to cost $30 million and be implemented in 2019-23.

    Bamboo Airways is expected to buy 24 narrow-body Airbus A320NEO and 20 Boeing B787-9 Dreamliner aircraft at a list price of $8.6 billion.

    Bamboo is expected to be a hybrid carrier combining full-service and budget models.

    Vietnam’s four airlines are flag carrier Vietnam Airlines; budget operator Jetstar Pacific Airlines which is partly owned by Vietnam Airlines; budget carrier Vietjet Aviation and Vietnam Air Services Co.

    The country’s airport capacity has been reaching its limits as fast economic growth means more people in the nation of 90 million are taking flights.

    Hanoi-based FLC, whose main businesses are housing, resorts and golfing, had said it planned to operate international flights through Bamboo Airways to tourist spots in Vietnam including where FLC has properties and also plans domestic flights.

    Privately owned FLC Group last month agreed a $5.6 billion deal to buy 20 Boeing Co planes at current list prices and in March signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus for up to 24 planes.

    The government said on Tuesday that Bamboo Airways will invest 700 billion dong ($30 million) during 2019-2023 on 10 Airbus or Boeing planes, but it was unclear whether it would rent or buy planes initially.

    It will become Vietnam’s fifth airline. It has yet to receive an aviation licence but the government said in a statement on Tuesday that it had authorised “The Ministry of Transportation to evaluate and issue an air transport business license in accordance with the law.”

    FLC has said it expects the airline to begin operations in 2019 and launch direct flights to the United States and Europe and position itself as a hybrid airline, combining traditional and low–cost models, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

    Vietnam’s Bamboo Airways commits to 20 Boeing aircraft

    Boeing Co (BA.N) said on Monday entered into an agreement to sell 20 of its widebody long-haul aircraft to Vietnamese startup Bamboo Airways in a $5.6 billion deal at current list prices.

    As part of the deal, which is yet to be finalized, FLC Group-owned FLC.HM Bamboo Airways has made a deposit in mid-June to reserve the 787-9 Dreamliners, whose delivery is likely to begin from April 2020, through 2021, Boeing said.

    Bamboo Airways plans to begin commercial operations next year out of Hanoi.

    FLC Group has also signed an initial agreement with Airbus SE (AIR.PA) in March for up to 24 A321neo aircraft.
