  • 2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 India Launch Date Out

2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 India Launch Date Out

Triumph Motorcycles India will be launching the long-anticipated Triumph Scrambler 1200 on May 23, 2019. The motorcycle made its global debut in last year in October 2018 and went on sale in the global marker early this year, and now the British motorcycle maker is finally ready to launch the new Scrambler 1200 in India as well. Globally, the motorcycle is offered in two variants, the base trim Scrambler 1200 XC, and a top-spec Scrambler 1200 XE. India, however, will only get the former and we have already ridden the bike and told you all about it.

The Triumph Scrambler 1200 is powered by the company’s ‘high-torque’ 1,200 cc parallel-twin engine that already powers the Thruxton R and the newly launched Speed Twin. However, Triumph has made several changes to it to make it more suited for the all-terrain nature of the bike. In the Scrambler 1200, the engine churns out 89 bhp @ 7,400 rpm and develops a peak torque of 110 Nm @ 3,950 rpm. This means the Scrambler 1200 will have more grunt with minimal throttle input, suitable for traversing broken trails and for riding off-road. The motor comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a torque-assisted clutch.

Both motorcycles come with superior off-road capabilities thanks to the fully adjustable 45 mm USD forks from Showa up front (47 mm for XE) and fully adjustable twin-spring Ohlins rear suspension. While the XC comes with 200 mm of travel both at the front and back, on the XE, the suspension units offer 250 mm of travel. The XE also gets gold anodized front forks compared to the black unit on the XC. Both models are equipped with piggy-back reservoirs. Furthermore, the Scrambler 1200 also comes with the first-in-segment 21-inch front wheel, along with 17-inch rear wheels, both are spoked and come shod in dual-purpose tires from Metzler Tourance tubeless tires. The bike comes with twin 320 mm discs with Brembo M50 monoblock calipers up front and a single 255 mm disc, also gripped by a Brembo’s 2-piston floating. Both bikes get switchable ABS, but the XE trim gets switchable cornering ABS.

The 2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 also come loaded with some of the best-in-class features like – ride-by-wire, cruise control, heated grips, under seat mobile storage with a USB charging port, keyless ignition, Single-button cruise control, and torque assist clutch. Triumph has also equipped the motorcycle with its latest generation full-color TFT instrument display, with 5 riding modes – Road, Rain, Sport, Off-Road and Rider-Configurable. The classy bits include – all-LED lighting with DRL headlight, Intuitive switch cubes & 5-way joystick, illuminated backlit switches. Furthermore, the Scrambler 1200 also gets a first-of-its-kind integrated accessory fit connectivity Bluetooth module, enabling the world’s first integrated GoPro control system, ‘turn-by-turn’ navigation, plus phone and music operation. The bike comes in two color options – Jet Black with Matt Black, and Khaki Green with Jet Black.

  • Triumph Speed Twin Launched In India

Triumph Speed Twin Launched In India

Triumph Motorcycle India has launched the much-anticipated Speed Twin, priced at ₹ 9.46 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The 2019 Triumph Speed Twin is the newest addition to the British motorcycle marque’s much-loved Bonneville range, and the bike made its global debut last year, in December 2018. The new Triumph Speed Twin sits right between the Bonneville T 120 and the Thruxton R, as a contemporary modern classic offering both performance and handling, in addition to a more upright and easy-to-live-with ergonomics. This makes the motorcycle very appealing to someone looking for an accessible motorcycle like the Street Twin but with Thruxton R-level performance.

The new Triumph Speed Twin is powered by the Thruxton R-sourced 1200 cc ‘high power’ parallel-twin engine, which comes with some revisions like – a low inertia crank, a high compression head, magnesium cam cover, and a revised clutch assembly. These updates have made the engine 2.5 kg lighter than the Thruxton R motor. In terms of power output, the engine is now tuned to churn out 96 bhp at 6,750 rpm and develop a peak torque of 112 Nm at 4,950 rpm, while being mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

The Triumph Speed Twin remains true to its Bonneville legacy with is modern classic design and styling. The bike has this overall dark undertone thanks to blacked out engine, front forks, headlamp, wheels, exhaust among others, while the contrast is added by the fuel tank which comes in three colour options – Red, Black and Grey. The bike also comes with bar-end mirrors, a flat single piece seat, and twin-pod instrument console with two small digital LCD screens offering a host of information, including selected riding mode, clock, trip meters and odometer. Suspension duties are handled by a pair of 41 mm KYB cartridge forks at the front, and the twin pre-load adjustable KYB shocks at the rear. Braking is handled by dual 305 mm discs gripped by Brembo four-piston four-pad axial calipers up front, and a single 220 mm disc on the rear wheel with a two-piston caliper from Nissin. The bike also comes with 17-inch, seven-spoke cast Aluminium wheels, shod with Pirelli Rosso Corsa III tyres.

  • Harley-Davidson 2019 First Quarter Sales Down

Harley-Davidson 2019 First Quarter Sales Down

Harley-Davidson has released its first-quarter results of 2019, and worldwide sales of motorcycles seem to have taken a hit, with the Bar & Shield brand reporting a 3.8 per cent decrease in global sales. While Harley says international sales were down 3.3 per cent, domestic US sales were down 4.2 per cent. According to Harley, these decreases were driven by “continued weak industry sales that were down 4.7 per cent.” Net income in the first quarter declined by 26.8 per cent as a result of declining worldwide sales. The company’s first quarter net income was reported as $ 127.9 million, down from $ 174.8 million in the same period of 2018, while the consolidated revenue was $ 1.38 billion in the first quarter of this year, compared to $ 1.54 billion in the first quarter of 2018.

Struggling with falling sales and demand for motorcycles, Harley-Davidson has launched a campaign to build the next generation of riders with its “More Roads to Harley-Davidson” accelerated growth plan. The company’s strategic objectives through 2027 are to build as many as 2 million new riders in the US alone, grow international business to 50 per cent of annual volume, launch 100 new high impact motorcycles, and do so profitably and sustainably.

“We are acting with agility and discipline to take full advantage of rapidly evolving global markets,” said Matt Levatich, president and chief executive officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. “Harley-Davidson’s U.S. market share growth and retail sales performance in the first quarter are further evidence of the effects we are having as we continue to implement and dial-in our More Roads efforts.

“We are driven by our un-paralleled rider focus and deep analytics that are guiding our efforts today and into the future. We, along with our dealers, are determined to lead and stimulate global industry growth.”

Harley-Davidson said it has made some progress on the More Roads plan and appointed its first-ever brand president, to fully engage the power of the brand as a catalyst to achieve its strategy and long-term objectives. Harley has also expanded its electric portfolio with the acquisition of StaCyc, a maker of electric two-wheelers for children. There are also continued preparations to launch the LiveWire, Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle later this year.

For the second quarter of 2019, Harley-Davidson expects to ship approximately 65,000 to 70,500 motorcycles, with overall motorcycle shipments in 2019 estimated to be in the region of 2,17,000 to 2,22,000 motorcycles

  • Honda NeoWing Trike Patent Granted

    Honda NeoWing Trike Patent Granted

Quite a few Japanese two-wheeler manufacturers are exploring the idea of making motorcycles with three wheels. Technically, a trike is a vehicle which has two wheels at the rear and a single wheel up front. But, the likes of Yamaha Niken and now the Honda NeoWing concept could be called as reverse trike. The patent document that carandbike accessed said that the patent was filed back in 2016 and it was finally granted and published on March 20, 2019.

The patent document also reveals that the NeoWing may be powered by either a two-cylinder or a six-cylinder engine and the layout could either be a V-twin or a transverse layout. Of course, if it is the latter engine option, then Honda will use the same engine as the one on the Gold Wing, which makes 126 bhp and 170 Nm.

Honda could also use an electric motor on the production model of the NeoWing concept, which could power either the front wheels or the rear wheel. At present, there is no confirmation on when Honda will officially unveil the production model of the NeoWing but with the patent granted, we believe it will be sooner than later. At present, the only leaning three-wheeler which is under production is the Yamaha Niken! The Niken is powered by an 847 cc, in-line three cylinder engine making, 111.8 bhp and 87.5 Nm of peak torque which is the same as the one on the Yamaha MT-09.

  • Evoke Motorcycles Unveils New Electric Power Cruiser

Evoke Motorcycles Unveils New Electric Power Cruiser

Evoke Motorcycles, a Beijing-based electric motorcycle manufacturer, has unveiled a new electric power cruiser, called the Evoke 6061. The name is derived from the “Twin Plate Frame” which uses precision laser cutting process from solid T6-6061 aluminium billet pieces. The rear swingarm uses the same twin plate design and sports dual coil-over rear shocks. The Evoke 6061 employs a 120 kW (160 bhp) motor with a chain final drive, and provides over 272 Nm of torque. While the company hasn’t revealed the top speed of the 6061, it says that the new motor and batteries offer a higher top speed than the previous 130 kmph with Evoke’s Urban Series electric motorcycle.

What is also unique is that Evoke will be using its latest Gen 2 battery modules which are capable of attaining a 0-80 per cent charge in just 15 minutes. The Evoke 6061 will be packing 6 of these batteries for a combined 15.4 kWh of energy capacity. But fast charging and the six battery packs will also mean the need for a good heat management system.

So far, there’s no word on actual range of the batteries, but most estimates put city range in the region of 300 km on a single charge. Evoke Motorcycles intends to have the 6061 on the road by June 2019, so it’s not very far from where we will can see how the bike eventually performs, although there’s no word yet on if the 6061 will be introduced in India. What is confirmed though is that Evoke Motorcycles is planning to make its debut in India. Evoke also has two models, the Urban S and Urban Classic in its portfolio, but for the Indian market, an all-new entry-level electric motorcycle is expected to be launched.

  • Yamaha MT-03 Unveiled At Bangkok Motor Show

Yamaha MT-03 Unveiled At Bangkok Motor Show

Yamaha Motor has pulled the wraps off the 2019 MT-03 street-fighter motorcycle at the Bangkok Motor Show in Thailand. The updated offering is based on the Yamaha YZF-R3 sharing the engine, chassis and several cycle parts but does get changes to match a naked motorcycle’s mannerisms. For 2019, the updated Yamaha MT-03 gets a new white and red paint scheme in addition to the existing colour options available. Visually, styling changes are minimal and the bike carries over the design language from the older model.

Key styling elements on the 2019 Yamaha MT-03 include the chiselled fuel tank, single headlamp cluster with LED daytime running lights and a semi-digital instrument console. The taillight remains a LED unit, while the sporty split seats have been carried over from the R3. The bike rides on web-design alloy wheels that are finished in contrast colours on the motorcycle.

Power on the updated Yamaha MT-03 comes from the 321 cc liquid-cooled, DOHC, parallel-twin engine tuned for 41 bhp and 29.6 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The bike is suspended by telescopic forks at the front and a monoshock unit at the rear. Braking performance comes from disc brakes at either end with dual-channel ABS as standard.

Although not confirm, odds are that Yamaha Motor India just might bring the MT-03 to India to compete against the KTM 390 Duke, BMW G 310 R and the likes. The full-faired Yamaha R3 is already on sale here and is expected to get a comprehensive upgrade in the second half of 2019 with the Japanese bike maker bringing the comprehensively updated version that was introduced globally last year. With the MT-15 and the MT-09 already on sale in India, the MT-03 will fit well into the company’s naked motorcycle line-up, and its Call of the Blue campaign to bring performance oriented products to India.

  • Harley-Davidson’s New Engine Revealed

    Harley-Davidson’s New Engine Revealed

Harley-Davidson is working on a new liquid-cooled engine that is expected to power a range of new middleweight models including the production versions of the Harley-Davidson Pan America adventure tourer, Harley-Davidson Custom 1250 and the Harley-Davidson Streetfighter. The engine designs filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office reveals quite a few details about the new engine, which is expected to be used in several new models to be launched between 2020 and 2022. The new engine will be a 60-degree v-twin which will be fully liquid-cooled, with a compact crankcase and transmission.

The design images of the new engine shows mounting points behind the transmission and on either side of the cylinder heads, and the concept designs of the upcoming models also suggested that the engine will act as a stressed member of the chassis. The latest design images don’t indicate any engine displacement, but Harley-Davidson has already announced that engine sizes will vary from 500 cc to 1250 cc. But these lack the traditional pushrods and will have double overhead cams.

The original concept images of the upcoming Harley-Davidson models reveal that the engines on each model are slightly different. The Custom 1250 had different coloured covers for the heads for a two-toned effect. The Streetfighter 975 also had a two-toned engine but with a difference in colours. The latest design filings are a mix of the engine types seen on the concept images. The head covers and cylinder covers are all separate pieces on the engine design images. At least three new models, showcased as concept images, will be launched in the next few years. First up, will be the Harley-Davidson Pan America adventure tourer, which will likely be launched in 2020, as a 2021 model. Next up will be the Streetfighter, which is expected sometime later, followed by the Custom 1250.

  • Hanoi to limit new motorbike registration from 2020

Hanoi to limit new motorbike registration from 2020

Hanoi is considering limiting the registration of new motorbikes in the downtown area from next year to reduce traffic jams. It will start with the districts of Hoan Kiem, Hai Ba Trung, Ba Dinh, Dong Da, and Tay Ho, and will expand to the districts of Cau Giay, Hoang Mai, Long Bien, Thanh Xuan, Gia Lam, and Dong Anh in 2025.

The city said that a motorbike ban during rush hour would be trialed on a stretch of Nguyen Trai Street in Thanh Xuan District this year or next year. The stretch runs about 2.2 kilometers from the Nguyen Trai – Third Ring Road intersection to the Nguyen Trai – Lang intersection. A similar ban will take effect on Xuan Thuy Street in Cau Giay District when the metro starts operating after 2020. Other roads the city is considering are Giai Phong, Nguyen Van Cu, Le Van Luong, Tran Duy Hung, and Nguyen Chi Thanh Streets.

In 2021-2025 Hanoi plans to ban motorbikes on Friday nights and during weekends on six streets near Hoan Kiem Lake: Hang Dau, Tran Nhat Duat, Tran Quang Khai, Tran Hung Dao, Le Duan, and Phung Hung. In the 2026-2030 the city will limit motorbikes in the area enclosed by the first ring road, an area of 26 square kilometers with a population of 700,000.

From 2030 it will ban motorbikes in most districts and has promised public transport will meet 70 percent of the public’s needs. There will be 180 bus routes with 2,700 buses, nine metro lines, 30,000 taxis, 30,000 contracted vehicles and 10,000 public bicycles available at that time, it has added.

The city will offer to buy used motorbikes less than 10 years old, said the plan, which was issued at a recent meeting. Vu Van Vien, director of the city Department of Transport, said Hanoi has been dealing with traffic jams by limiting cars in some areas since 2013, and the city has recently restricted taxis and technology taxis (such as Grab) on certain streets.

“Motorbikes are just one of the vehicles that will be restricted. Our plan limits and manages all vehicles. We do not want to cause trouble to residents and seek to discuss before implementing.”

The city is still studying the proposal and would consult other authorities, and wherever the ban applies, public transport should be available to meet the public’s needs, he said, adding that the city will seek public opinion on the plan.

In 2017 the city People’s Committee approved a plan to ban motorbikes in downtown districts by 2030 and restrict the use of all private vehicles in areas well served by public transport. The city said it polled 15,000 respondents in 30 districts at that time and 90 percent supported the ban.

The city tried in 2003 to stop the registration of new motorbikes in the districts of Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Dong Da, and Hai Ba Trung, and expanded it to Thanh Xuan, Tay Ho and Cau Giay in 2005. However, it later scrapped the ban since it was not effective.

Hanoi’s plan to ban motorbike has met with opposition from transport experts, who said public transport is inadequate. The capital, with a population of 7.5 million, has 5.6 million motorbikes and around 550,000 cars, besides some 1.2 million bikes brought in from elsewhere, according to police figures.

  • Ducati Global Sales Slip 2.7 Per Cent Last Year

Ducati Global Sales Slip 2.7 Per Cent Last Year

Ducati’s global sales volumes for 2018 remains over the 50,000 level for the fourth consecutive year in 2018, despite a 2.7 per cent decrease in global sales. In all, Ducati delivered 53,004 motorcycles to customers worldwide, compared to 55,871 motorcycles in 2017. Sales in Ducai’s number one market, the US, proved to be particularly challenging, declining by nearly 9 per cent. Overall revenue in 2018 reached a figure of 699 million Euros, compared to 736 million Euros in 2017. Operating profit for 2018 was 49 million Euros, compared to 51 million Euros in 2017.

“2018 was challenging from many points of view, but we are satisfied with our financial performance throughout a difficult year,” said Claudio Domenicali, CEO Ducati Motor Holding. “The company is generating the resources to continue funding the development of new products which is very positive for the future.”

The Bologna-based motorcycle company managed to compensate the reduction in the volume of sales, resulting from a decline in the market, with the growing interest and market success of models with higher margins, such as the Panigale, which made it possible to maintain the operating profit at the same level as the previous year. The Panigale series had had quite a successful run in 2018, with one out of every superbike sold worldwide in 2018 being a Ducati Panigale. The home market of Italy continued to be successful for Ducati with sales of over 9,000 bikes in 2018. Ducati Motor Holding currently has 1,591 employees, and the global sales network includes 720 dealerships in over 90 countries.
