Changi Airport Group names DHL Partner of the Year

Changi Airport Group (CAG) recognized its top airline partners at the Changi Airline Awards 2017, where a total of 25 awards were presented to airlines whose efforts over the past year contributed significantly to the growth and development of the Singapore air hub.

The Partner of the Year award was presented to DHL Express, in recognition of their strong partnership with CAG to grow and strengthen Changi Airport’s air cargo hub status. DHL Express launched their fully-automated South Asia Hub at Changi Airfreight Centre in October 2016, which tripled their cargo handling capacity to 628 tonnes during the peak processing window, and increased their parcel-sorting speed by six-fold  to 24,000 shipments and documents per hour.

DHL Express also added new flights through its joint venture (JV) airlines and other airline partners. Last year, with the expansion of the DHL Express operations, Changi Airport welcomed Neptune Air and the return of K-Mile.  As of April 2017, the company’s JV and partner freighter flights at Changi Airport totalled over 30 weekly services or about 12% of Changi’s total weekly freighter services.

Sean Wall, Executive Vice President, Network Operations and Aviation, DHL Express Asia Pacific said, “The successful launch of our South Asia Hub last year was made possible thanks to the close collaboration we had with Changi Airport Group as well as the Singapore Government. As the heart of our DHL network in South and Southeast Asia, the South Asia Hub in Singapore has allowed us to add more network flights in and out of the country to meet our customers’ needs, and to further capitalize on the country’s prime position for regional and global trade. Singapore remains a strategic node in our global network and we are honored to be named Partner of the Year by the Changi Airport Group.”

Speaking at the awards event, Mr Lee Seow Hiang, CEO of CAG said, “As we celebrate our successes, we will continue to transform Changi Airport, in preparation for challenges in the future. We will do so by catering supply for future growth, as well as working with our partners to grow sustainable demand for aviation services. Mr Lee mentioned the Airport Collaborative Decision Making (ACDM) initiative as an example of Changi Airport adding capacity to the existing airport eco-system. He said, “ACDM was only possible with the strong support and commitment of all our airline, ground handling and airport partners. As a result, there has been a reduction of 90 seconds in the average taxing time for departing flights during peak hours, translating into fuel savings for airlines.”

2016 was a positive year for the aviation industry, with lower oil prices offering some respite amidst a highly competitive environment. Changi Airport saw a record-breaking 58.7 million passengers passing through its gates, a growth of 5.9% year-on-year. Changi also welcomed four new airline partners and eight new city links during the year. The airport is on track to receive 60 million passengers in 2017.

  • Starbucks Reserve opens 10th Singapore store in Changi airport

Starbucks Reserve opens 10th Singapore store in Changi airport

American coffee house Starbucks has opened its 10th Reserve cafĂ© in Singapore. Located inside Singapore’s Changi airport, the 24-hour airport outlet has opened in T3’s public area, in the United Square section.

While patrons will be familiar with Starbucks, Starbucks Reserve is the coffee chain’s more high-end version of a cafĂ© or coffee bar.

Every year, Starbucks coffee buyers travel to coffee-growing regions to find and purchase some of the world’s finest Arabica coffee beans. Starbucks Reserve then offers these to its customers, which are in limited quantity and only available at select Starbucks Reserve stores and online.

On the ground, Starbucks Reserve allows customers to ask exactly how they would like their coffee brewed at the bar: Starbuck’s proprietary Clover brewer, the Chemex coffeemaker, the traditional Coffee Press and Pour-overs, mimicking a more boutique coffee house.

While there are several other Reserve outlets in Singapores, the Changi store is the first to feature the interactive Coffee Bar, along with the Black Eagle espresso, and the Nitro Cold Brew, which is served from the tap.

However, Reserve customers can still order normal Starbucks coffee as seen available at the regular stores.

For the last financial quarter ending January 26, Starbucks reported revenues of $5.7 billion, up 6.7% on a year-over-year basis.

Starbucks is a roaster, marketer and retailer of coffee. As of October 2016, the company operated in 75 countries.

  • Guerlain and Shilla open new Changi T1 ‘exclusive outpost’

Guerlain and Shilla open new Changi T1 ‘exclusive outpost’

Between March 1 to April 12, Changi Airport and its exclusive perfume and cosmetics retailer The Shilla Duty Free have teamed up to create ‘an exclusive Outpost’ within the Terminal 1 Cosmetics & Perfumes central store to mark the launch of the brand’s new fragrance – Mon Guerlain.

Located next to the transit departure hall this new presentation is designed to give visitors and customers ’a rare glimpse’ of the brand’s DNA and heritage, utilising a an olfactory journey of Mon Guerlain with a Fragrance Organ display.

This is designed to provide ‘compelling insights’ into the story behind the Mon Guerlain fragrance and how it was created. The Mon Guerlain creation was first imagined by Thierry Wasser, the famous fifth Guerlain perfumer and it was turned into reality ‘for the extraordinary, sincere and authentic woman’, says Guerlain.

‘RECOGNISING THE AMBIGUITY OF MALE AND FEMALE SCENTS
’

It adds that the fragrance begins with the base notes of Tahitensis Vanilla, along with subtle notes of Carla Lavender, Sambac Jasmine and Santalum Album Sandalwood.

The company said: “The result is an exceptional fragrance that reconciles the divide and ambiguity of masculine and feminine scents. Mon Guerlain comes beautifully encased in a quadrilobe bottle, an iconic design that owes its name to its unique stopper, formed from a solid piece to attain the shape that resembles four lobes.

“Angelina Jolie is the muse who inspired the birth of Mon Guerlain and her love for tattoos is widely celebrated through the new fragrance. Perfume is likened to having an invisible tattoo on the skin, and drawing on this unique concept, a Guerlain Tattoo Atelier has been specially created at the Outpost to complement and deliver a unique experience to travellers.

    TATTOO ARTISTS ON HAND

“A tattoo artist will be present at selected timings to create beautiful gold tattoo art that expresses the spirit and DNA of Mon Guerlain. Travellers can choose from six preset Guerlain flash tattoos, or even enjoy a customised hand-drawn gold tattoo adapted from preset designs.”

Guerlain says travellers ‘are also in for a riveting treat’ as the Fragrance Organ display includes a grand showcase of the limited edition Mon Guerlain Bee Bottles, an exclusive exhibit at this Outpost, which is also available for sale.

An emblematic symbol of the Guerlain House, the Bee bottle pays tribute to the beauty, elegance and charm of Her Majesty Empress EugĂ©nie, wife of Napoleon III. Embodying extreme precision and refinement, each Bee bottle is painstakingly dressed in baudruche and embellished with silk cords by the skilful hands of Guerlain’s nimble-fingered craftsmen.

Commenting on the initiative Guerlain’s Regional Director Travel Retail Asia Caroline Teichteil said: “Guerlain is thrilled to present its first-ever Outpost at Singapore Changi Airport. Mon Guerlain is a fragrance that embodies modern femininity and we believe that this collection will greatly resonate with the stylish globe-trotter and become a must-have essential in their beauty kit.”

    PERSONALISED SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

Teo Chew Hoon, Changi Airport Group’s Senior Vice President of Airside Concessions added: “The innovative and interactive concept of the Guerlain outpost will further elevate the retail experience at Changi. Whether it is exploring the exclusive exhibition of the Mon Guerlain Bee Bottles, or visiting the Guerlain Tattoo Atelier, travellers can expect a personalised shopping experience filled with surprises.

Raelene Johnson, Head of Global Merchandise Division, The Shilla Duty Free added: “The Shilla Duty Free has always been committed to working closely with Changi Airport and our brand partners to present exciting experiences for our global shoppers.

“The Mon Guerlain Outpost offers activities that give travellers an immersive, multi-sensory experience. We are also thrilled to educate shoppers about the artisanal craft behind Guerlain’s fragrance-making as they discover the intricacies of the perfumery world through the eyes its perfumer,”

    SIZES AND ADDED INCENTIVES

The new fragrance is available as a 50ml Mon Guerlain EDP Fragrance (S$133.00) or 100ml (S$189.00) and Tier 1 Customers will receive a miniature Mon Guerlain EDP fragrance (5ml) with every purchase of the 50ml Mon Guerlain EDP fragrance.

The terminal will have an capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of cargo including facilities for perishable goods. The facility can also handle up to eight B747-400 freighters at one time. Commenting on the the new facility, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said: “Upon completion, our uplifting capability will be equivalent to the cargo terminals at Amsterdam Schiphol, Singapore Changi or Hong Kong.”

The new cargo terminal is part of Ethiopian Cargo’s Vision 2025, aimed to support the country’s export of perishables including flowers, fruits, vegetables and meat. That plan includes expansion of its freighter network to eighteen aircraft serving 37 international cargo destinations by 2025.

“At Ethiopian, we are very proud of the new heights Ethiopian has flown in the year,” Gebremariam said. “We celebrated our 70th anniversary, inaugurated the largest and the finest Aviation Academy in Africa and a state-of-the-art In-flight Catering facility which is the largest in the continent of Africa, introduced Africa’s first Ethiopian Airbus A350, and spread our wings to more countries on five continents”.

Ethiopian has also constructed a flight simulator building and installed five of the latest full flight simulators, which includes Boeing 787, 777, 757, 767, 737NG and the Bombardier Q400. It plans to add simulators for the Airbus A350 XWB and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

  • How a T-shirt helped a man become a millionaire

    How a T-shirt helped a man become a millionaire

He helped a friend buy a S$51 Adidas T-shirt last year — and netted himself S$1 million on Sunday (Jan 15) in Changi Airport’s Be a Changi Millionaire draw.

As a bonus, Mr Ade Iskandar Roni, 39, a procurement officer from South Jakarta, drew the name of his best friend in the Guess the Changi Millionaire lucky draw, winning his friend S$500 for picking the right millionaire out of eight finalists.

Although the chances of winning increase exponentially with the amount spent at Changi Airport’s retail stores, Mr Ade’s purchase was the least expensive among the items picked up by the eight finalists in this year’s event — four of the other seven finalists, who hailed from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates, bought liquor.

An elated Mr Ade shed tears of joy when he was announced the winner. Mr Ade, who has five children aged 2 to 12, said he plans to use his windfall to bring his extended family for a visit to the Muslim holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, and perhaps buy a new car and house.

“I didn’t think I would win, I cannot imagine how much this money is in Indonesia,” said Mr Ade through a Bahasa Indonesian interpreter.

Into its seventh run, the 2016 edition of the retail promotion drew close to 1.2 million entries from 225 nationalities, primarily Singaporeans, Chinese, and Indonesians.

To enter the draw, passengers and visitors to the airport must spend at least S$50 in a single receipt shopping or dining at Changi Airport. The eight finalists emerged after three rounds of elimination and gathered on Sunday to compete through several rounds of games to win the grand prize.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) also shared on Sunday that sales at Changi Airport reached a record high of S$2.3 billion last year, up 5 per cent from the previous year.

Online sales via the iShopChangi portal showed particularly strong growth of 76 per cent from the previous year.

Chinese and Singaporeans were the strongest shoppers across platforms, contributing to half of overall retail sales.

Travellers from Indonesia, India and Australia made up the next largest customer groups last year.

The three most popular product categories were cosmetics and perfumes, liquor and tobacco, and luxury goods, contributing collectively to 70 per cent of sales.

These were followed by electronic gadgets, and chocolates, candies, and delicatessen items. Online purchases comprised mostly beauty products, electronics, and alcohol.

CAG executive vice president of commercial Lim Peck Hoon said high concession sales help to keep aeronautical charges — such as charges for landing, parking, and aero-bridges — competitive.

The opening of second DFS Wines & Spirits Duplex at Terminal 2 — which houses a cigar room and whiskey house — and the Pokemon at Changi celebrations are examples of how the operator has tried to keep its retail strategy “innovative”, she added.

Changi Airport Group strengthens pharmaceutical supply chain in Singapore

Changi Airport is the first airport in Asia to join Pharma.Aero as a strategic member, together with partner Singapore Airlines Cargo who comes on board as a full member. Both parties envisage that this effort will raise pharmaceutical handling capabilities at Changi Airport.   An organization comprising stakeholders of air cargo supply chain from around the world, Pharma.Aero is dedicated to achieving excellence in end-to-end air transportation for pharma cargo.

Pharmaceutical cargo is among the fastest growing segments at Changi Airport, growing 19 percent year-on-year for the first nine months of 2016, and registering a five-year compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13 percent from 2010 to 2015.

The South West Pacific and North East Asia regions account for 45 percent of total share of pharmaceutical cargo at Changi Airport. In terms of volume, Australia, China and India are Changi’s top three pharmaceutical markets on a year-to-date (January to September 2016) basis. The top markets showing strongest growth for the period are China (+51 percent), Vietnam (+35 percent) and Hong Kong (+32 percent).

Pharmaceutical products that pass through Changi Airport include vaccines, tablets and pills. These products are highly sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. Pharmaceutical cargo is the sixth most valued segment in terms of total air cargo handled, and account for under 10 percent of total value of cargo handled.

Changi Airport is well-equipped with specialized facilities to be the preferred gateway of pharma cargo in Asia, with the two ground handlers (Coolport by SATS and Coolchain by Dnata) having the ability to handle more than 300,000 tonnes of temperature sensitive cargo annually. Our excellent connectivity (6,800 flights to 330 cities served by over 100 airlines) and strong mix of freighter and bellyhold capacity provides ample options for pharma shippers to access the global economy.

Changi Airport is the first airport in Asia to embark on a community approach for the IATA CEIV Pharma certification, thereby raising the local community’s handling standards and capability for temperature-sensitive pharma cargo. The pioneer group of companies in the Changi CEIV Community consists of Singapore Airlines Cargo, dnata Singapore, Global Airfreight International Expeditors Singapore, CEVA Logistics Singapore, and Schenker Singapore.

SATS Coolport, a major cargo player at Changi Airport, was the first facility in the world to attain the IATA CEIV Pharma certification in 2014.

Global spending on pharma cold chain logistics is projected to grow at eight-nine percent per year, totaling US$16.7 billion by 2020 according to Pharmaceutical Commerce. Asia is expected to account for the largest regional share growth with more than $1.2 billion of cold-chain growth through 2019.

DHL Express has inaugurated its South Asia Hub at Singapore Changi Airport

The €85 million (US$85.5 million), 23,600-square-metre facility is located at the Changi Airfreight Centre and features the first fully automated express parcel sorting and processing system in South Asia.

“Over the years, we’ve invested significantly to bolster our network and services in Asia Pacific,” said Ken Allen, CEO of DHL Express. “Our investment in the DHL South Asia Hub is the most recent in a series of global network investments made, and is the largest infrastructural investment made in Singapore to date. The country’s strategic location not only boosts our operational network capabilities, but also supports growing trade in the region aided by a stronger global economy.”

According to DHL, the 24-hour facility is 33 percent larger than the previous hub. It is also six times faster, being capable of processing up to 24,000 shipments and documents per hour and handling more than 628 tonnes of cargo during the peak processing window.

“The DHL South Asia Hub is a significant milestone in further enhancing our multi-hub strategy in the region,” said Ken Lee, CEO of DHL Express Asia Pacific. “With four hubs in Asia Pacific — Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Bangkok — this links over 70 DHL Express Gateways located throughout the region. Together, these facilities reinforce our customer commitment to provide the most efficient international express connectivity between key markets in the region. This will also allow us to add more network flights in and out of Singapore, such as the recent introduction of the Phnom Penh-Bangkok flight that adds to our existing Bangkok-Singapore service, as regional trade continues to grow.”

Between 2012 and 2015, the average number of shipments per day grew by 50 percent for Oceania, 30 percent for South Asia and 25 percent for Southeast Asia, according to DHL.

Changi Airport registers 0.6% August passenger fall to 4.9m

The Changi Airport Group (CAG) reports that passenger traffic on Chinese and Korean routes proved to be ‘particularly strong’, with plus-7% in both instances.

CAG also described traffic numbers more generally as ‘relatively steady’, while pointing out that that this comparison with the same period least year obviously factored in Singapore’s Golden Jubilee celebration and its many activities. This included a four-day extended weekend with a registered traffic increase in August 2015 of +6.6%.

Meanwhile, CAG reports that August was still the second busiest month for Changi Airport so far this year in second place behind July’s passenger total of 5.18m..

    MORE REPRESENTATIVE INDICATOR?

Perhaps the more representative traffic figure for the airport, considering the single month August 2015 ‘distortion’ was the first eight month period this year, however. As such, Changi registered 6.5% more passenger movements, with growth underpinned by Southeast Asia (+8.9%) and Northeast Asia (+10.5%) traffic.

CAG added: “As at 1 September 2016, more than 100 airlines operate at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to some 330 cities in about 80 countries and territories worldwide. With more than 6,800 weekly scheduled flights, an aircraft takes off or lands at Changi roughly once every 90 seconds.”

On the retail side, CAG is also still running its Shop and be a Millionaire promotion, offering passengers who spend S$50 ($37) at the airport – or with iShopChang.com a chance to win the S$1,000,000 ($734,000) grand prize. This continues to be the single most successful promotional event ever run by the Changi Airport Group.

It is the first Singapore cafe featuring the feline character out of Japan, and as well as refreshments it will offer plush toys and souvenir tea cups. There will also be Hello Kitty-inspired tea blends, and the cafe is expected to have Halal certification.

French clothing company Lacoste Singapore has tendered successfully for an outlet at Changi Airport.

RSH Singapore, which represents Lacoste, has been awarded a 78 sqm concession in the west departure/transit lounge on level two.

Calling for mid-priced fashion tenders in Terminal 1, Changi Airport Group awarded two other concessions to Dufry (The Nuance Group Singapore), which will use its 70 sqm and 83 sqm concessions for the Kipling and Trunk & Co brands.

All concessions are in the same area with three-year contracts, with no option to renew. The tenders attracted 13 participants.

Meanwhile, Dufry, in partnership with MCM, has also won an extra 104 sqm speciality tender in the same location, also for three years.
