Whisky Magazine picks DFS’ Changi T3 duplex

DFS Group’s Singapore Changi Airport duplex duty free liquor and tobacco store in Terminal 3 was recently voted Travel Retailer of the Year in the 2016 ‘Icons of Whisky Awards by Whisky Magazine.

As reported many times, the store was opened last May as part of an airport terminal-wide upgrade of the wines and spirits category, where the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore raised the bar by encouraging contract bidders to push the envelope in terms of shop standards and quality.

DFS’ May 7 2015 response was the long-anticipated opening of its $64m new terminal wide programme of stores over 85,350sq ft, including its 11,400sq ft dual-floor duplex Changi Airport T3 liquor and tobacco store – the largest single space for liquor and tobacco in any DFS store around the world.

DFS Group’s flagship wines and spirits store at Singapore Changi Airport Terminal 3 is also the LVMH-owned company’s single biggest contract investment in wines and spirit to date. Prior to the opening, Michael Schriver [the then COO of DFS] described the project as ‘DFS most ambitious airport store ever’. At the same time, Ms. Lim Peck Hoon, EVP, Commercial at the Changi Airport Group described the L&T business as the single biggest commercial concession accounting for around 20% of total sales.

According to DFS, Whisky Magazine receives nominations for its huge number of awards, which are subsequently shortlisted by its editorial panel and then finalized after a voting process online.

    DFS IS THRILLED…

“We are absolutely thrilled that our DFS, Singapore Changi Airport store has been awarded Travel Retailer of the Year by Whisky Magazine and look forward to continuing to deliver innovative experiences and exceptional products for our customers in 2016,” said Brooke Supernaw, DFS Group’s Senior Vice President Wines, Spirits and Tobacco.

“At each of our locations, our aim is to provide our customers with a surprising and delightful shopping experience where they can engage with the brands and products they love. We are particularly proud of DFS, Singapore Changi Airport which over the past year has expanded to become Asia Pacific’s largest assortment of single malts.

“From the duplex’s design to the interactive tastings held on site, our customers have loved this new approach to travel retail and we’re delighted the industry has fallen in love as well.”

DFS adds that this is the first year the Icons of Whisky Awards have included a Travel Retail category, which was awarded at both the regional and global level.

    SEVERAL RIVALS COMPETED

The retailer says it beat competitors from Ireland, England, Germany, the UAE and the Netherlands to receive Whisky Magazine’s Travel Retailer of the Year in the Rest of the World regional category award last in January.

Following this it adds it is now pleased to have gone  head-to-head with rival entries from America and Scotland to secure the global title at the awards ceremony held in London last week.

  • Changi online quadruples, concessions hit $1.5bn

Changi online quadruples, concessions hit $1.5bn

Concession sales at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) rose by +8% in 2015 to over S$2.2bn/$1.54bn helped by the popularity of the airport’s online shopping portal (iShopChangi.com) and growing passenger interest in the Changi Millionaire draw.

China, Singapore, Indonesia, India and Australia were the airport’s top five customer groups contributing most to sales last year, according to the airport operator, Changi Airport Group.

Passengers from China accounted for almost 30% of total sales, registering the strongest growth of +28% while Singaporeans accounted for about 20%, maintaining modest growth of +3% year-on-year.

Liquor and tobacco, and perfumes/cosmetics continued to be the most popular product categories at Changi, followed by luxury goods, electronics/equipment, and confectionery.

    ONLINE TRAFFIC DOUBLES, SALES QUADRUPLE

A major change last year was that online shopping on iShopChangi.com saw a doubling of traffic to the portal compared to visits in 2014. However sales increased fourfold indicating a rising level of spending per head.

Arriving, departing or transiting passengers at the Singapore hub can shop at iShopChangi.com from two weeks in advance of their travel, and up to 18 hours before their flight. That has been helped by the product range being expanded to seven categories since the site launched in 2013 and it now offers more than 6,000 items for passengers who want to shop online. However, only wine/spirits and beauty products are available for purchase and collection on arrival from DFS and Shilla outlets. Beauty products, electronics and wines and spirits are the most popular items.

    MILLIONAIRE DRIVER

The Changi Millionaire promotion has also helped lift revenue. In 2015, the promotion, which runs from May to October, attracted nearly two million lucky draw entries from 229 nationalities globally. The top three groups were Singaporeans, Chinese nationals and Indonesians, with Singaporeans making up over one-in-three of the participants.

To participate in the draw, passengers and visitors needed to shop or dine at Changi Airport, with a minimum spend of just S$30 in a single receipt. Purchases made in both the public and transit areas of Changi Airport are eligible for the draw. Travellers shopping on iShopChangi.com had up to 10 times more chances of being picked as a finalist.

Commenting on the record concession sales, Lim Peck Hoon, Executive Vice President of Commercial at CAG, says: “This is positive for the Singapore air hub as profits from our retail business help to offset the cost of our aeronautical operations.”

The airport has a fashion concession available in Terminal 2 within the departure/transit lounge area for which it says it is seeking a multi-brand boutique from a retailer capable of delivering “a luxurious shopping experience”.

The space is 519 sqm with a contract period of three years. Changi says the space can incorporate store-in-store concessions for individual brands.

In Terminal 3 it has an open category concession, meaning it is open to approaches from retailers in any category. That 25.4 sqm space is on Basement 2 in the northern end of the terminal, and also has a three year term.

The deadline for submissions for these spaces range from September 28 to October 15.

    DFS flagship has walk-in bar

DFS Group has opened a new wines and spirits flagship duplex store at Singapore’s Changi Airport – the first of its kind in the world.

The 11.400 sqft store at Terminal 3 is DFS Group’s largest single retail space for wines, spirits and tobacco.

Designed by Masamichi Katayama, the award-winning interior designer and founder of design firm Wonderwall, the store showcases the luxury retailer’s full assortment of wines, spirits and tobacco in a visually dramatic environment and façade inspired by flowing water and undulating shapes. Within the store, warm and modern design elements accentuated by a double-height atrium measuring over eight meters high provides an inviting shopping and tasting environment for travellers.

Amongst the store’s most innovative features are expanded common areas designed especially for lifestyle and cultural experiences. This includes a Raffles Long Bar – in collaboration with one of Singapore’s most historical landmarks, the Raffles Hotel – the ground-floor atrium tasting bars and a private lounge. The Long Bar will serve its famed cocktail invention, the original Singapore Sling. These common areas also provide space for guided tastings and a monthly program of exciting and interactive activities, featuring master classes for cocktail mixology, bartending and hosting at home.

Philippe Schaus, CEO and chairman of DFS Group, said that when the company embarked on the project, it wanted to open a wines and spirits store of “a quality and richness unlike anywhere else in the world”.

“That is why we secured the collaboration of Masamichi Katayama to build this one-of-a-kind, two-level experiential store, drawing inspiration from the most stylish bars and restaurants around the world as well as on the traditional and historic cellars of France and Scotland.

“This project would not have been possible without the close collaboration and shared vision between DFS and the farsighted management team of Changi Airport.”

  • Changi Millionaire program extended in Singapore

Changi Millionaire program extended in Singapore

Singapore’s Changi Airport has expanded its successful Changi Millionaire promtoion for 2015, as part of its 50th anniverary celebrations.

From now until October 31, shoppers and diners can participate in the ‘Be a Changi Millionaire’ campaign for an instant chance to win any of the six attractive premiums, on top of the chance to be made a millionaire. This is the sixth year Changi Airport is running its anchor retail promotion, which has the largest cash prize in Singapore.

In a collaboration with local designers Wang Shijia and Jo Soh, Changi Airport Group is this year offering a set of six exclusive ‘premiums’ as instant prizes in the latest instalment of Changi Airport’s ‘Be a Changi Millionaire’ campaign.

Meanwhile, to celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday, Changi Airport has dressed its four Millionaire promotional sites as local icons of yesteryear – the dragon playground, the mobile tricycle ice-cream stall, an old movie theatre as well as the laid-back ‘Mama Shop’.

For the six months of the campaign, one finalist will be picked each month for the grand draw to be held in early 2016. In addition, this year, the Millionaire excitement will be brought online. Travellers who shop on iShopChangi – Changi Airport’s very own e-commerce portal – will be entitled up to 10 times more chances of being picked as a finalist. At the end of the six-month period – for the first time in the game’s history – a seventh finalist will be picked among the pool of online shoppers to vie for the grand prize of a million dollars. All seven finalists will each win a cash prize of S$5,0001 and a three-night hotel stay.

So far, five shoppers have been crowned millionaires overnight – including Singaporeans Ivan Rantung (2010) and Peh Hock Peng (2012), Australian Jessica Down (2011), Indonesian Irvung Tio (2013), and Japanese Seiichiro Oiyama (2014).

Lim Peck Hoon, executive VP of commercial at Changi Airport Group, said after five successful years of Changi Millionaire, the introduction of a seventh finalist from among online shoppers will make shopping on iShopChangi more interesting and potentially very rewarding.

“This year is a jubilee year for Singapore, and we are infusing local elements into the promotion, so that shoppers from all over the world can join in the celebrations with us. The exclusive premiums combine elements of both Singapore and Changi Airport, making them unique memorabilia for our visiting guests.”

Airport visitors and travellers only need to make a minimum purchase of S$30 at any of the retail and F&B outlets at Changi Airport2 or iShopChangi.com to qualify for both the monthly finalist draw and games to win instant prizes. The number of winning chances increases with the amount spent. Changi Rewards members and purchases made on iShopChangi.com will receive additional chances. More information is available online.

  • Changi retail again tops $2 billion

Changi retail again tops $2 billion

Singapore’s Changi Airport says sales at retail outlets across its terminals topped S$2 billion in 2014, despite a slump in passenger numbers inbound from China.

It’s the second year in a row the $2 billion barrier was breached – Its 2013 growth represented a nine per cent increase on 2012, but the percentage growth was not revealed this year, suggesting a stable result.

The strength of the airport’s retail business – in part a consequence of the airport’s careful positioning as a transit hub, delivering a captive market of thousands of potential shoppers every day – underlines its decision to invest in the massive Jewel retail experience in partnership with CapitaMalls. The complex – already under construction and scheduled for completion by end of 2018 – will have five storeys above ground and five basement storeys, covering a total gross floor area of about 134,000sqm.

Last year, Changi hosted 54.1 million passenger movements, the highest number yet, representing an average of 148,219 every day, the most in its 33-year history.

What’ significant about Changi’s 2014 figures is that the retail sales held up despite a significant downturn in spending by Chinese passengers. China has been a key market for retailers in the airport, but fewer visited, or transited, in Singapore last year and those who did were coming from less affluent population centres, thus with more restricted budgets. It’s the same challenge retailers in the high streets and malls of Hong Kong and Singapore bemoaned all last year.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) said that – just like in 2013 – the biggest customer groups by nationality were China, Singapore, Indonesia, India and Australia.

The most-purchased retail categories were, perhaps predictably, cosmetics and perfumes, chocolates and candy, electronics, luxury goods, liquor and tobacco.

  • Pure Gold for Changi

Pure Gold has become the first Middle Eastern jeweller to be granted a concession at Singapore’s Changi International Airport.

It will open a jewellery store in Terminal 1.

Pure Gold is a private family-owned business founded 20 years ago which now has 125 stores in the Middle East and Asia. It plans to open a further 200 by 2018, selling products sourced from its factories in China and India.

Chairman and founder Firoz Merchant said Changi airport is one of the busiest and best performing airports in Asia and being awarded a concession to open in the airport terminal is a big boost to Pure Gold’s travel retail business.

“This achievement is in line with our plans to become the largest travel retailer in jewellery globally. Passengers passing through Singapore Changi International Airport can now choose from our extensive range of gold, diamond, pearls, precious and semi-precious gemstone jewellery in the latest styles and best prices.”

CEO and MD Karim Merchant added in a statement: “Travel Retail is a key area of business for us and is becoming an increasingly important sector of our overall operations. Winning the concession at Changi Airport, which has an average number of 50 million passengers per year, will help us to further strengthen our business.”
