  • Bangkok Tops List as World’s Most Expensive City for Renters, Reveals DWS Housing Affordability Review 2025

Bangkok Tops List as World’s Most Expensive City for Renters, Reveals DWS Housing Affordability Review 2025

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, has distinguished itself as the least affordable city in the world for renters, as per the Housing Affordability Review 2025. The report, compiled by Germany’s DWS, indicates that the average middle-class family in Bangkok spends nearly 79% of their disposable income on renting a two-bedroom apartment.

The Root of High Rental Rates

The city’s inflated rental prices are primarily due to a scarcity of condominiums. The second quarter saw condo availability drop to a 16-year low, a situation exacerbated by climbing construction costs and high-interest rates.

    Global Ranking of Affordability

Following Bangkok, Mumbai and Mexico City were ranked second and third as the least affordable cities, with renters spending 66% of their disposable income on rent. Hong Kong came in fourth at just over 60%, and Johannesburg, South Africa, was in fifth place at approximately 58%. These cities are part of a group of 24 global cities with the most challenging rental markets. Other Asian cities on this list include Manila, Beijing, Hanoi, and Singapore.

The study analyzed the rent to median disposable income ratio in 80 cities. A lower ratio signifies more affordable rent, with the worldwide average ratio standing at 38%.

    Cities with More Affordability

On the other end of the spectrum, Salt Lake City was deemed the most affordable city, with a ratio of 20%. Leipzig and Austin followed closely, both featuring a ratio of 23%.

Cities that ranked lower in affordability experienced a more significant decrease in affordability ratios compared to those ranking higher. Additionally, these cities saw their remaining spending power increase at a slower rate compared to cities demonstrating more economic resilience.

    Disposable Income After Rent

The report also calculated the disposable income households have left after paying their monthly rent. Singapore topped the list globally with approximately $8,000 of leftover income, which is twice the global average. San Francisco followed with $7,650, and Abu Dhabi was third with $7,000.

According to the report, wealthier cities typically benefit from high-income levels and balanced housing costs, which allows residents to retain robust purchasing power even after paying rent.

A lack of available condos, heightened construction costs, and high-interest rates are all factors that contribute to Bangkok’s high rental rates.

Salt Lake City is considered the most affordable city for renters, with a rent to disposable income ratio of 20%.

Which cities have the highest disposable income after rent payments?

Hong Kong Edges Out Singapore to Claim Title of Asia’s Most International City

In a recent release from the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Asian Cities Internationality Index has revealed its latest rankings, ultimately declaring Hong Kong the leading city in Asia with a score of 73.7 out of 100. The dynamic city narrowly edged out Singapore, which secured a score of 73.5, making the competition as tight as a pair of shoes on a bustling Hong Kong street.

Evaluating 11 major cities in the region, the index utilized 113 indicators across seven categories: business and economy, quality of life, infrastructure and connectivity, innovation and ideas, human capital diversity, cultural interaction, and the governmental and legal frameworks that support business operations. This comprehensive analysis also drew insights from a survey completed by 1,107 senior business executives situated in the assessed locales, ensuring a well-rounded perspective.

Hong Kong’s recognition as a top-tier global financial hub shines through the report. Praised for its successful hosting of international events and a living environment characterized by safety, stability, and freedom, the chamber’s press release highlighted these factors as key to its ascendance in the rankings. Tokyo secured the third position in the rankings, followed closely by Seoul, Shanghai, and Bangkok, while Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, and Mumbai completed the list in that sequence, according to the Macao News. • Ho Chi Minh City Sets Ambitious Goal of $7,850 in Per Capita Income for 2023

Ho Chi Minh City Sets Ambitious Goal of $7,850 in Per Capita Income for 2023

Ho Chi Minh City is setting ambitious goals for its economic landscape, aiming to boost its per capita income by 3.7% this year. The targeted income for 2025 is set at VND204.3 million, roughly translating to over US$7,850 at current exchange rates. This figure positions the city a remarkable 57% ahead of the national GDP target of over $5,000 for the same period.

But what does this all mean? Simply put, this ambitious goal highlights the value of goods and services that the economy generates per person each year. As of 2024, the average income in Ho Chi Minh City was already pegged at $7,600, or more than VND197 million, putting it second among the six centrally governed cities in Vietnam, just behind Hai Phong.

Yet, the city’s expenses reflect another side of the coin as it ranks third in the cost of living across the nation, trailing only behind Hanoi and Quang Ninh, according to the Spatial Cost of Living Index (SCOLI) for 2024. The SCOLI, compiled by the General Statistics Office, measures the price variations of goods and services between different regions.

Interestingly, when examining the SCOLI in detail, Ho Chi Minh City’s index is almost on par with Hanoi’s at 99.8%. However, residents and visitors will find that certain expenses—particularly in clothing, food services, culture, entertainment, tourism, transportation, and household appliances—are generally more affordable in Ho Chi Minh City compared to the capital. On the flip side, costs for housing, education, and healthcare tend to be higher.

In addition to this impressive income target, the bustling city is also setting its sights on generating revenues of VND520 trillion, achieving a public spending disbursement rate of 95%, and exporting goods worth $52.6 billion. These targets promise to keep the vibrancy of Ho Chi Minh City alive and thriving.

As the city moves forward, one can’t help but wonder whether Ho Chi Minh City’s economy will keep rolling at this pace, or if it might stumble over rising costs. A spirited dance between income and living expenses seems to be in full swing!

    Questions & Answers

What is Ho Chi Minh City’s target for per capita income in 2025?
The city aims for a per capita income of VND204.3 million, which is over US$7,850.

How does Ho Chi Minh City’s income compare to the national target?
The city’s target income is 57% higher than the national GDP target of over $5,000 this year.

What factors influence the cost of living in Ho Chi Minh City?
The cost of living is affected by various factors, with clothing and food services being less expensive than in Hanoi, while housing, education, and healthcare costs are higher.

  • Singapore, Japan to collaborate on green air lanes

Singapore, Japan to collaborate on green air lanes

A recent dialogue saw a mutual agreement between Singapore and Japan’s aviation authorities to work together towards initiating greener air lanes between the two countries.

At the 2nd Singapore-Japan Dialogue on Aviation Collaboration, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) and the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) shared the same view that the concept of an ‘aviation green lane’ should encompass airline operations, airport processes and air traffic management (ATM).

The two are planning green ATM measures on all flights between Singapore and Tokyo, which will save fuel, cut carbon emissions, and reduce flight times. This follows a successful one-month trial in June 2023 whereby CAAS and JCAB implemented green ATM for one daily passenger service.

Another initiative proposed for greener air traffic management is expanding the multi-regional trajectory-based operations (TBO) project to more air navigation service providers (ANSPs). Last month, ANSPs of Singapore, Japan, Thailand, the United States and Boeing saw the first successful multi-regional TBO demonstration flight, part of a 3-year collaboration to advance the concept and bring about significant benefits for airspace users, including greater flight efficiencies and reductions in carbon emissions.

CAAS said these ATM concepts would complement the current push for SAF, which it considers he key element to achieve carbon neutrality for aviation, but the two warned that there would have to be sufficient supply and competitive pricing in the Asia Pacific region.

Mr Han Kok Juan, Director-General of the CAAS, explained that the collaboration on green ATM establishes tangible measures that can be immediately implemented and translate to immediate fuel and carbon emission savings.

“These measures can be scaled up to cover more flights and serve as a pathfinder for wider adoption by more countries. With the successful conclusion of the green ATM trial and the extension of green ATM measures to all flights between Singapore and Tokyo, Singapore and Japan show that green ATM can complement sustainable aviation fuel as a key feature of an aviation green lane.”

On other important areas, the two civil aviation authorities will share best practices on fostering a positive safety culture and leveraging technology to overcome manpower shortage and raise productivity.

The two have also agreed on the necessity to resume flights and city links to meet strong demand with plans to restore direct flights between Singapore and Okinawa from November 2023.

The two sides first signed a strategic framework agreement in December 2022 to advance their civil aviation collaboration. As of July 2023, the number of weekly flights between Singapore and Japan has recovered to over 65 percent of pre-Covid level in 2019, with 122 weekly passenger services operated by six air carriers on city links to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo.

  • Want to Learn How to Get Around the Lion City Like a Local? Here’s How

Want to Learn How to Get Around the Lion City Like a Local? Here’s How

If you’re a tourist in Singapore and you want to explore the Lion City like a local would, you’ll be glad to know that you can do just that from the moment of your arrival. This is because the city-state has a modern, well-designed, and highly-efficient transportation system that makes use of buses, trains, and cars. Using these transportation options, one can explore the Lion City’s many modern and natural attractions without breaking a sweat.

Once you drop off your luggage at your hotel, feel free to explore the city like it’s a second home to you. Whether you’re planning to visit the city’s historical sites, try delectable meals at hawker centres or Changi Airport restaurants, or go on a shopping spree in one of the local markets, here’s how you can get around Singapore like the locals do:

Know the Traffic Rules and Follow Them

Part of the reason why many aspects of everyday life in Singapore run like a well-oiled machine is that most of the locals follow the country’s many rules. This goes for their traffic rules, too. Given this, it would do you well if you get to know these rules yourself, especially if you’re planning to drive during your stay. Doing so will ensure not only your safety and comfort, but also that of the people with whom you share the road.

If you’re sticking to using public transportation or touring the city on foot, you’ll be happy to know that the city is very walkable and its roads are bicycle-friendly. Still, there are a few things you need to remember so you can do as the Singaporeans do and avoid steep fines. For example, you should make use of pedestrian crossings and footpaths as much as possible, and always stay on the sidewalk instead of walking along the road itself.

Purchase and Top Up Your EZ-Link Card

Are you stressed out about the idea of handling a lot of loose change and bills while commuting? Don’t worry, because it’s fairly easy to go cashless in Singapore—even for commuters.

You can do this by purchasing an EZ-Link card, which can be used in public buses, the MRT, the LRT, and even taxis. This contactless card can be purchased from and reloaded at a lot of convenience stores across the country, and there are also machines that can dispense and top it up at bus interchanges and train stations. There are even passes that you can use as many times as you want within a given number of hours or days, which can be a practical option if you want to see as much of the country as you can during a short stay.

Remember the Bus or Train Schedule

The public transportation system in the country is quite reliable. Because of this punctuality, you can expect that the next bus or train will arrive at and depart from their respective stations as scheduled. This can be especially useful if you have a strict schedule that you want to follow. You can even plan your stay down to the minute, if you wanted to.

Of course, there are still times when the bus or train will arrive earlier or later than expected. Should this happen to you, you might want to download the Land Transportation Authority’s My Transport app on your phone. This application will help you keep track of bus and train schedules and serve as a helpful tool for planning your itinerary for the day.

    Minimize Noise in Public Transportation

It’s a sign of courtesy to your fellow commuters if you make an effort to stay quiet during bus and train rides or in public spaces like parks and train stations. So, if you like to listen to music or watch videos on your phone when commuting, it’s best to bring earphones or headphones with you so you can do so without causing a ruckus. If you must talk to a companion, speak softly and only when necessary so that you don’t disturb other passengers.

Carry an Umbrella When Heading Out

Because Singapore has a tropical climate, it tends to be quite humid all year. There are also times when the weather can get hot or rainy. It’s a good idea, then, to carry an umbrella around with you when you travel on foot. That said, some locals opt not to bring an umbrella anymore since a lot of places now have covered walkways. Still, it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially as a tourist who may be unfamiliar with the area.

Follow these tips and you’ll be travelling like a Singapore local in no time. And if you ever feel unsure about the situation you’re in or if you don’t know how to use a certain aspect of the public transportation system, feel free to ask the people around you for help. You’ll find plenty of citizens and residents who are more than willing to help you make the most of your journey in the Lion City.

We are excited to work with our industry partners to unlock the real impact of 5G. We look forward to seeing new and exciting ways 5G will benefit our businesses and consumers.”

Three new 5G projects have been introduced to boost Singapore’s 5G ecosystem. Under IMDA’s 5G Innovation Programme, S$30 million has been set aside to accelerate the adoption and commercialization of 5G solutions.

IMDA has announced the awarding of projects for Asia Pacific’s first 5G mobile edge computing for Mixed Reality and Holomedicine capabilities in health tech; the region’s first outdoor mass 5G-enabled cinematic quality AR experience; and Southeast Asia’s first maritime 5G augmented reality/virtual reality smart glasses solution.

PSA continues to make waves, as the world’s first 5G mmWave port operations trial sees progress. Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) achieved a reduction in latency by 50% compared to the current 4G network. This will enable PSA to scale AGV operations at Tuas Mega Port beyond 2000 vehicles. Automated rubber tire gantry cranes (aRTG) have also seen significant stability in terms of throughput and low latency. 5G will enable PSA to completely automate its RTG operations and empower its staff for higher-value job roles and upskilling in new areas of work.

IMDA’s partnership with Razer has also seen significant results. This first-ever mmWave trial for Razer was conducted at Ngee Ann City and Singtel’s Comcentre, and findings from this trial enabled a re-imagining of the mobile gaming experience with 5G-enabled gaming controllers.  Based on learnings from this trial, Razer has launched the Razer Kishi V2, a universal mobile gaming controller that promises a “console-class gameplay experience” for smartphones. It also launched the Razer Arctech, a heat-dissipating mobile phone cover that supports the heavy processing load required for a seamless gaming experience.

  • Singapore to Expand Quarantine-Free Travel

    Singapore to Expand Quarantine-Free Travel

Following its announcement of more Vaccinated Travel Lanes (VTLs) on Saturday, the city-state has said it is working to expand travel to more countries, including its regional neighbors.

Singapore aims to reestablish the city-state as an international aviation hub with the expansion of its VTL scheme to more countries ahead of the year-end holidays.

From October 19, VTLs will be launched with Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with South Korea to be added on November 15. Singapore currently has VTLs with Germany and Brunei, launched September 8 under a pilot scheme.

Under the scheme, fully vaccinated travelers will be able to enjoy quarantine-free travel both ways. However, there is currently a limit of 3,000 arrivals under the scheme.

Pre-Covid, these countries accounted for about 10 percent of arrivals, Transport Minister S. Iswaran said on Monday.

These countries under the VTL scheme are «collectively an important set of partners» for Singapore, Iswaran said in an interview, noting that the countries have significant investments in Singapore and are among the top 20 trading partners, with sizeable business communities and families here.

We want to do more, but in a manner that is cautious and calibrated,» the minister said, adding that Singapore is currently in discussions with counterparts around the world, including its regional neighbors.

Since the announcement over the weekend, there has been a rush to secure tickets. Singapore Airlines’ website crashed on Saturday afternoon amid the surge in demand, while visitors to its service center at Ion Orchard had to wait in line for several hours.

  • Current Generation Honda City to Continue with only the Petrol Engine

Current Generation Honda City to Continue with only the Petrol Engine

The fifth-generation Honda City was slated to debut in March this year but the unprecedented lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic has pushed the launch for the all-new model. The new-gen Honda City launch is just around the corner. In an interesting move, the fifth generation and the fourth generation (current) models will co-exist in the market. Rajesh Goel, Senior Vice President & Director, Sales & Marketing, Honda Cars India, confirmed the development on the latest episode of Freewheeling With SVP and said, “In the fourth generation, the BS6 is only available on the petrol, and that’s how we intend to keep it. ”

Elaborating more on the same, Goel revealed that while the next-generation Honda City will be sold in both petrol and diesel engine options, the current model will get only the 1.5-liter BS6 petrol engine. The sedan was updated to the BS6 norms earlier this year and the move could see Honda take a dual approach to the compact sedan segment with a wider portfolio. The fourth-gen Honda City has been around for a while and continues to be a popular seller in the segment. It is likely that the model will get a more competitive price tag that will help take on the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the entry-level trims of the Hyundai Verna, Volkswagen Vento and the Toyota Yaris. Meanwhile, the 2020 Honda City will be a major overhaul over its predecessor and will see an all-new 1.5-liter petrol engine with more power, a revised diesel engine and a host of new features and goodies on offer.

While there have been rumors that Honda plans to target the fleet segment with the sale of the current generation City in India, the same is yet to be confirmed by the automaker. Goel also did not reveal the variant break-up on the old City, but did say that the model will be sold in a fairly loaded guise, in-line with the premium benchmark that the City has set for itself over the last two decades across four generations.

The move does beg the question if the new generation Honda City will see a premium price tag. The sedan made its debut in Thailand last year and looks extremely promising with an appreciable list of features. It’s also grown in proportions and is now wider and longer by a considerable margin. The new car also mimics the cabin from the new generation Jazz, which makes it a clutter-free yet feature-laden interior.

With respect to the current model, the fourth generation Honda City gets all the essentials including the touchscreen infotainment system and even the HondaConnect app. Power comes from the BS6 compliant 1.5-liter i-VTEC petrol motor that develops 117 bhp and 145 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a 5-speed manual and a CVT automatic. It will be interesting to see if the current Honda City will be offered with a CVT once the new model arrives.

In contrast, the all-new Honda City uses a revised 1.5-liter petrol engine that develops 119 bhp while peak torque remains the same at 145 Nm. Expect the transmission options to remain the same. The 1.5-liter i-DTEC diesel, on the other hand, makes 99 bhp and 200 Nm, and is paired with a 6-speed manual.

The new-generation Honda City is expected to debut in a few weeks and initial production will be restricted till the company chooses to scale things up, depending on the situation. More details will be available in the coming days.
