    KFC Australia pilots drone-delivery service in Queensland

    In an Australian-first, KFC has enlisted a drone delivery company to bring Zingers and other fried faves to homes and workplaces in the Logan area between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

    Wing, owned by Google parent Alphabet, launched in Canberra in 2019 in a world-first, and in Logan the following year.

    Since then, suburbs within a 10km radius have been having burgers, groceries, pharmacy items, hardware products, coffee and other products zoomed in via 5kg styrofoam drones that can carry up to 1.5kg.

    Under a pilot program kicking off on Friday, the world’s most famous fried chicken brand will initially be available to a small number of households in the South East Queensland suburbs of Kingston, Logan Central, Slacks Creek, Underwood, and Woodridge.

    The service will gradually expand to include other nearby locations, Wing says, dubbing Logan “the drone delivery capital of the world”.

    “You know the future truly is here when you can get hot, fresh Kentucky Fried Chicken delivered by a drone from the click of a few buttons,” KFC Australia chief marketing officer Kristi Woolrych said.

    Wing says the number of deliveries rocketed last year as the pandemic raged on and strong demand has continued in 2022.

    Earlier this week, spokesman Jesse Suskin said the company was planning expansion in Australia.

    “We’ll be in more places in southeast Queensland. We’ve submitted for those permissions from our regulators,” Mr. Suskin said.

    “For other states, we’re actively starting to have those conversations right now.”

    “It’s a lucrative and incredibly fast-growing market. Globally, the industry has already taken off and is projected to reach US$7.39bil (RM31bil) by 2027.

    “This new training program provides an opportunity to upskill our ‘Allstars’ and offer exciting new programs for the broader community, as well as supporting the drone industry in providing quality training to have more qualified remote pilots in Malaysia.

    “No prior experience is necessary, making this a great opportunity for everyone to learn to fly,” he told StarBiz.

    Ultimately, he said this would support the company’s vision to launch urban drone delivery for goods and retail items from airasia’s e-commerce platforms.

    The sky is the limit as the company could also potentially scale up to support remote areas for essential supplies during natural disasters, he added.

    He said the team has been working closely with CAAM for months and looks forward to starting its first class in the coming weeks.

    Alphabet Owned Wing Has Over 100,000 Drone Deliveries In Two Years

    Alphabet-owned Wing has said that it will hit a landmark of 100,000 drone deliveries over the weekend. This news comes after two years of the launch of service in the Australian city of Logan which only has 300,000 people. This is happening at a time where there are reports stating that Amazon’s plans of drone deliveries are collapsing. Wing has said that it will be entering new markets in the coming months.

    “I think we’ll expand quite a bit. I think we’ll launch new services in Australia, Finland and the United States in the next six months. The capabilities of the technology are probably ahead of the regulatory permissions right now,” said Jonathan Bass, the comms head at Wing.

    Of all the deliveries more than half were completed in Logan itself in the last eight months. In the first week of August customers have placed orders for over 4,500 deliveries that works out to be one order every 30 seconds during its delivery window. Over 10,000 cups of coffee have been ordered, alongside 1,700 children’s snack packs, 1,200 hot chooks, 2,700 sushi rolls, and 1,000 loaves of bread.

    These drones have a range of 9.6 kms as they are limited by the capacity of their batteries and larger batteries are not possible because that will inhibit their ability to fly. This means the short trips are ideal for food delivery which happens in a package that resembles a McDonalds happy meal. Batteries add weight but apart from that, even parcels add weight, so these drones cannot carry anything more than 1.36 kg. But the system works well with fragile objects like eggs which don’t break.

    The drones cruise at a height of 100 to 150 feet in the air and lower down to about 23 feet when they reach the destination. There is a tether that lowers the package to the ground which is unhooked. No person is required to receive the package, something that Amazon’s solution needed.

    Drone maker DJI to shut Hong Kong flagship within a week

    Shenzhen-headquartered drone maker DJI is to close its Hong Kong flagship store in Causeway Bay – but the company says the move is unrelated to strict new laws restricting drone use in the territory.

    The three-story, 930sqm store, which displays the brand’s range of aerial and handheld devices and includes a space where people can carry out test flights, will close from next Monday.

    A sign affixed to the storefront says DJI remains committed to its customers and partners in Hong Kong and elsewhere in the world and that the company would continue to develop the industry’s most advanced drones and creative camera technology.

    Responding to an inquiry from the South China Morning Post, a DJI spokesperson said the flagship’s closure reflected the company’s evolving needs and had “no connection” with the new regulations requiring drone operators to be trained and licensed to fly the devices. That law takes effect next June.

    After the store’s closure, the company’s drones will remain on sale online and through authorized dealers.

    DJI opened the store in September 2016. At the time it was the brand’s third retail store, following one in Shenzhen and another in Seoul.

    A flight cage on the ground floor showcases drones in action and a SkyPixel Gallery on the first floor features international aerial photography. A technical support center and space for workshops, seminars, and special events are located on the second floor.

    Under the new Hong Kong law, drones weighing between 250gm and 7kg must be registered, and pilots must undertake online training. Insurance will become mandatory.

    Amazon expects to offer customers drone delivery in under 30 minutes ‘within months’.

    The e-commerce giant unveiled the latest Prime Air drone design at its re:MARS Conference in Las Vegas last week.

    Jeff Wilke, CEO of global consumer at Amazon said in a blogpost that the company has been working hard at building “fully electric drones that can fly up to 15 miles and deliver packages under five pounds to customers in less than 30 minutes”.

    “With the help of our world-class fulfillment and delivery network, we expect to scale Prime Air both quickly and efficiently, delivering packages via drone to customers within months,” Wilke said.

    The Prime Air drone features a hybrid design and can do vertical takeoffs and landings.

    Wilke said that Prime Air is one of many sustainability initiatives to help achieve Shipment Zero, the company’s vision to make all Amazon shipments net zero carbon, with 50 per cent of all shipments net zero by 2030.

    “When it comes to emissions and energy efficiency, an electric drone, charged using sustainable means, traveling to drop off a package is a vast improvement over a car on the road,” Wilke said.

    DHL China is to start delivering goods by drones, cutting the delivery time on a route in Guangzhou from 40 minutes to just eight.

    The international express delivery-service provider has entered into a strategic partnership with autonomous aerial-vehicle firm Ehang to jointly launch a fully automated smart drone-delivery solution to tackle last-mile delivery challenges in Chinese urban areas.

    Using the most advanced Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in Ehang’s newly-launched Falcon series, the new intelligent drone delivery solution overcomes the complex road conditions and traffic congestion common to urban areas. It reduces one-way delivery time from 40 minutes to eight minutes and can save costs of up to 80 per cent per delivery, with reduced energy consumption and carbon footprint compared with road transportation.

    KDDI, Terra Drone launch drone asset inspection service

    Japan’s KDDI and industrial drone solutions provider Terra Drone have jointly launched a new drone inspection services for industrial infrastructure.

    The jointly developed solution involves using a drone to generate a 3D, high resolution model of heavy industrial assets such as wind turbines, telecom and transmission steel towers, smokestacks, and bridges.

    The drone will use the model to determine which components should be inspected, allowing the drone to shoot the inspection points from optimal angles and range designated by the Terra Inspection software.

    It uses mobile networks to transmit data back to inspection crews and to allow operators to remotely plan flight paths based on weather databases and maps.

    The solution also has potential applications in areas beyond asset inspection, such as large area surveillance, land surveying or precision farming.

    KDDI and Terra Drone jointly developed the underlying Smart Drone platform, and have developed a number of solutions based on the platform since 2016.

    Google delivery drones cleared for Australian Airspace

    A sister company of Google has been given the green light to launch drone delivery in Australia after years of test flights.

    The drone company Wing, owned by Google’s parent company Alphabet, was given permission this week to deliver takeaway food and drinks and over-the-counter medicines by drone to about 100 homes in Canberra.

    Wing, which has been trialing deliveries for the last 18 months, began testing its drones in Australia in 2014, but faced initial opposition from residents who complained about the noise.

    Although the drones were below legal noise limits, Wing developed a new, quieter model and said the feedback obtained during its trials had been “valuable” and it hoped to “continue the dialogue”.

    “We will continue to engage with the local community and stakeholders as we expand our service and are hosting community information stalls and delivery demonstrations in the serviceable areas over the next few weeks,” the company said in a statement.

    According to Wing, the delivery service will initially be available to a limited set of eligible homes in the suburbs of Crace, Palmerston and Franklin.

    “We expect to gradually expand to more customers in Harrison and Gungahlin in the coming weeks and months.”

    Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority gave Wing permission to launch a commercial service after examining its safety record and operational plans.

    The drones will only be allowed to fly 11-12 hours a day and must be piloted, rather than fully automated.

    Wing’s initial launch partners include Kickstart Espresso, Capital Chemist, Pure Gelato, Jasper + Myrtle, Bakers Delight, Guzman Y Gomez and Drummond Golf.

    “We’re excited to connect with more local businesses in the Gungahlin area about how we can help them reach more customers faster, safer and more sustainably and encourage any local merchants who are interested in learning more to get in touch with us.”

    Wing had said that drone deliveries reduce traffic and pollution and can deliver goods in six to 10 minutes.

    • Area – Capture a specific area quickly and easily by drawing a custom polygonal flight zone on a map. DJI Terra automatically generates efficient flight path options based on the area selected.
    • Waypoint – Create dynamic custom flight paths through an area or around objects using waypoints and adjustable parameters like aircraft altitude, speed, heading, gimbal pitch and angle. For more complex missions that require high attention to detail, the 3D Flight Visualization feature enables the design and simulation of missions on existing 3D models.
    • Oblique – Capture a rich data set by automatically flying the same route multiple times. Each flight automatically adjusts the angle of the camera to capture new details, giving an extra crisp 3D model of the object or asset from multiple angles.

    Real-time Mapping and Detailed 3D Models

    With real-time mapping capabilities, DJI Terra allows drone pilots to quickly generate 2D orthomosaic maps as the drone flies, ideal for time-sensitive missions where situational awareness is critical and decisions need to be made in minutes.     JD.com and Rakuten to collaborate on drone delivery

    Chinese online retailer JD and Rakuten, the Japanese e-commerce firm, will collaborate on developing unmanned delivery solutions in Japan. According to a new agreement signed between JD and Rakuten, JD’s drones and autonomous delivery robots will be used in Rakuten’s unmanned delivery services, which the firm launched in 2016. The two companies will collaborate on Rakuten’s lineup of unmanned delivery services to suit a wide range of applications and situations.

    Rakuten has already gained experience through providing delivery services and trials in collaboration with corporate partners and local governments. In 2018, its first delivery trial was conducted using a combination of drones and autonomous delivery robots, a step toward solving the last mile challenge for the logistics sector in Japan.

    “We are delighted to begin this collaboration with JD, which boasts the most cutting-edge proprietary delivery network in China as well as a track record and knowhow in delivery with drones and UGVs,” said Koji Ando, group managing executive officer of Rakuten. “By using JD’s drones and UGVs with the unmanned delivery solutions created by Rakuten, we hope to accelerate innovation in the Japanese logistics sector and contribute to building a society that can offer greater convenience to all citizens.”

    JD began developing its drone program in 2015, and launched the world’s first commercial drone deliveries in 2016 in rural China. It currently operates drones in Jiangsu, Shaanxi and other provinces.

    Since then, JD’s drones have logged more than 400,000 minutes of flight time. In January this year, the company announced the success of Indonesia’s first government-approved drone test flight, opening the door for future commercial drone use in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

    On the ground in China, its autonomous delivery robots are being used in urban areas in several cities and are becoming frequent sights on a number of university campuses and in office parks. JD has also launched two smart delivery stations in the cities of Changsha and Hohhot, transforming last-mile logistics and further increasing delivery speed for customers.

    Korea’s Finance Minister Hong Nam-ki said once the world’s first 5G smartphone is introduced at the end of March and 5G connectivity is in full swing, life will improve significantly.  “Commercialized 5G is a core infrastructure of the fourth industrial revolution as it superconnects everything in real time and transfers massive amounts of data at high speeds,” Finance Minister Hong said during a meeting on innovation-led growth Wednesday. “The 5G smartphone, which is to be launched for the first time in the world in March, and 5G telecommunications services will be used in interactive education and digital health care, which will contribute significantly to the quality of life.”

    He said the government has been working on establishing the foundation for the commercialization of 5G, including distributing the 5G frequency to telecommunication companies in June 2018, expanding R&D investments and even setting a new tax rate – a maximum of 3 percent – for companies building the 5G network.

    “This year, the three telecommunication companies – SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ – are expected to invest more than 3 trillion won [$2.67 billion]” in 5G, Hong said.

    Samsung Electronics is expected to hold an event at the end of March to introduce its first 5G smartphone, dubbed the “Galaxy S10 X.” It will also be celebrating 10 years since the mobile phone manufacturer released its first Galaxy phone.

    In December, the company tested its 5G smartphone as the three Korean mobile telecommunication companies officially switched on 5G-network services for clients in the greater Seoul area and in some of the larger cities in the country.

    Finance Minister Hong said the commercialization of 5G services will spark innovation and convergence in various industries, including manufacturing, logistics, health and medical services, even in disaster prevention and management.

    5G is estimated to have maximum data transmission speeds 20 time faster than 4G.

    According to the government, 5G connectivity will not only increase the access to virtual and augmented reality, including wireless holograms for education or entertainment, but with the help of 5G, autonomous vehicles will roam the streets while traffic control will be managed more efficiently by applying artificial intelligence technologies in real time.

    Smart factories with wireless robots and quality control and delivery by drones will become a reality.

    By 2026, the global 5G equipment and device market is expected to be worth around 344 trillion won, while the telecommunication service market will be worth around 410 trillion won and the 5G-based convergence market about 1,440 trillion won.

    By 2030, the economic effects of 5G will be valued at an estimated 47.8 trillion won in Korea, which is equivalent to 2.5 percent of the country’s economy.

    JD.com has just marked a breakthrough for drone delivery in Southeast Asia

    JD.com announced the completion of Indonesia’s first government approved drone flight – a breakthrough for drone delivery in Southeast Asia. The successful pilot opens the door for future commercial drone use in Indonesia and the Southeast Asia region, subject to further regulatory approvals. Representatives from Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation, Civil Aviation and Air Navigation were present for the flight. The news was announced during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting.

    The test flight took place on January 8, 2019, in West Java, Indonesia, where the drone flew from Jagabita Village, Parung Panjang to MIS Nurul Falah Leles Elementary School to deliver backpacks and books to students.

     

    The items delivered by drone were part of a larger donation of supplies from JD.com to the school. JD has a long history of offering philanthropic support to those in the communities where it operates. The company often taps its technology and nationwide logistics network to provide immediate support for natural disasters such as earthquakes in China.

    JD.com and its JV partner, e-commerce company JD.ID, were early movers in bringing high quality e-commerce to Indonesia. JD.ID, which launched e-commerce operations in 2016, sells 1 million SKUs and serves more than 20 million consumers across the country. Its operations leverage a logistics network consisting of ten warehouses across seven islands, covering 483 cities and 6,500 counties.

    Given the fact that the country is spread out across many islands, the implementation of drones for regular use in e-commerce deliveries, as well as other logistics-related services, will enable citizens in Indonesia to enjoy more efficient and reliable services, and help JD.ID realize its goal of being able to deliver 85% of orders same- or next-day. JD.ID is also committed leveraging its logistics and other resources to support humanitarian efforts like earthquake disaster relief.
