    Samsung Galaxy S8 ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Special Edition launched in China

    Samsung and Disney have teamed up to launch the special ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Galaxy S8 variant. The special edition smartphone has been launched in China where it will retail for 5,988 Yuan (or approx Rs. 56,487). The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Galaxy S8 is available via JD.com, one of the largest online retailers in China. It is unknown if the special edition model will be available outside of China.

    The limited edition model looks like the regular Galaxy S8 from the outside. However, it comes with special themes and wallpapers. Plus, you will get some bonus content from the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales which is the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Also, the retail box has been designed to look like a treasure box , with the Pirates of the Caribbean logo engraved on it. Inside the box, you will find a phone’s ring holder and a removable case.

    As far the phone’s specifications are concerned, you’re getting the standard option. The Galaxy S8 sports a 5.8-inch QHD+ display, with a resolution of 2960×1440 pixels. The device features an iris scanner and as well as an ‘Infinity’ display. The size of the display is a bit different. It’s an ultra wide display which has an aspect ratio of 18:5:9 instead of 16:9.

    The smartphone has been powered by Samsung’s Exynos 8995 processor which has been built using 10nm process. The phone further comes with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and microSD card slot. The Galaxy S8 runs on Andoid 7.0 Nougat with the company’s TouchWiz UI.

    On the camera front, the Galaxy S8 comes with a 12-megapixel rear camera with f/1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS). On the front the phone sports an 8-megapixel shooter with f/1.7 aperture and autofocus. The phone comes with a 3,000mAh battery and is IP68 certified as well.

    The physical home button is removed entirely and replaced with a touch sensitive button underneath the display. Another big change is that the fingerprint scanner is now located on the back of the device, next to the camera module. The Galaxy S8 also comes with Bixby, Samsung’s new AI assistant.

    This isn’t the first time Samsung is launching a special edition of its flagship device. The South Korean company has released a few limited edition smartphones in the past, like the Batman Edition of the Galaxy S7 Edge and the Iron Man Limited  Edition of its predecessor.

    Samsung faces Galaxy S8 and S8+ supply crunch in South Korea

    Some early customers in South Korea have still not received their new Galaxy smartphones as Samsung faces heavy demand amid short supply of the new device.

    The company began taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on 7 April and delivery was expected within the next 11 days.

    But as the pre-orders surpassed one million, the stocks ran out quickly and Samsung was unable to deliver the handsets on time. It promised to give promotional gifts to early buyers.

    The company on Saturday (22 April) said it will extend the deadline for registration of preordered 64GB Galaxy S8 and S8+ models, adding there was “an imbalance of inventories by colour or model at retail stores”, reports Yonhap.

    A Samsung official told us: “We have extended the registration period of the two models till April 30 from the initial planned 24th.”

    This is not the first time Samsung has extended the deadline for its new Galaxy smartphones. Last week, the company announced an extension of the registration of the 128GB Galaxy S8+, due to a supply crunch. The midnight black and orchid grey models of the S8 are said to be in short supply.
    Industry watchers believe the tight supply position might lead to an awkward situation where the early buyers receive their S8 later than the customers who bought the handset after the official rollout on 21 April.

    The S8 models recently went on sale in select countries such as the US, Canada, Puerto Rico and Korea. The company said the rollout will continue in other markets across the world in the coming weeks.

    Samsung says to sell refurbished Galaxy Note 7s

    Analysis from Samsung and independent researchers found no other problems in the Note 7 devices except the batteries. Tech giant Samsung Electronics said late on Monday that it plans to sell refurbished versions of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, the model pulled from markets last year due to fire-prone batteries.

    Samsung’s Note 7s were permanently scrapped in October following a global recall, roughly two months from the launch of the near-$900 devices, after some phones self-combusted. A subsequent probe found manufacturing problems in batteries supplied by two different companies – Samsung SDI Co Ltd and Amperex Technology.

     

    Analysis from Samsung and independent researchers found no other problems in the Note 7 devices except the batteries, raising speculation that Samsung will recoup some of its losses by selling refurbished Note 7s.

    A person familiar with the matter told in January that it was considering the possibility of selling refurbished versions of the device or reusing some parts.

    Samsung’s announcement that revamped Note 7s will go back on sale, however, surprised some with the timing – just days before it launches its new S8 smartphone on Wednesday in the United States, its first new premium phone since the debacle last year.

    Samsung, under huge pressure to turn its image around after the burning battery scandal, had previously not commented on its plans for recovered phones.

    “Regarding the Galaxy Note 7 devices as refurbished phones or rental phones, applicability is dependent upon consultations with regulatory authorities and carriers as well as due consideration of local demand,” Samsung said in a statement, adding the firm will pick the markets and release dates for refurbished Note 7s accordingly.

    The company estimated it took a $5.5 billion profit hit over three quarters from the Note 7’s troubles. It had sold more than 3 million Note 7s before taking the phones off the market.

    The company also plans to recover and use or sell reusable components such as chips and camera modules and extract rare metals such as copper, gold, nickel and silver from Note 7 devices it opts not to sell as refurbished products.

    The firm had been under pressure from environment rights group Greenpeace and others to come up with environmentally friendly ways to deal with the recovered Note 7s. Greenpeace said in a separate statement on Monday that it welcomed Samsung’s decision and the firm should carry out its plans in a verifiable manner.

    Samsung Vietnam reports massive loss following Galaxy Note 7 scandal

    Samsung was forced to recall 2.5 million units globally. Samsung Electronics Vietnam (SEV), which produces the notorious Galaxy Note 7 in northern Vietnam, has reported a loss in the third quarter, coinciding with the withdrawal of the latest model of its smart phone.

    SEV, based in the northern province of Bac Ninh, incurred a loss of $122.6 million in the third quarter, down sharply from a net profit of $490 million a year ago, according to a recent statement from parent company Samsung Electronics.

    Samsung’s profits were hit following battery explosions on the Galaxy Note 7, causing the firm to suspend global sales and withdraw the smart phone from the market.

    A representative from SEV said the affects of the scandal were inevitable but declined to give further comment.

    In October, Samsung Vietnam said it had no plan to lay off employees in 2016 as a result of the parent company’s crisis and predicted the value of its exports would grow further from last year’s $32.7 billion.

    From January-September, SEV made a net profit of $1.04 billion, down 18.7 percent on-year.

    The South Korean giant also runs Samsung Electronics Vietnam Thai Nguyen in the northern province of Thai Nguyen and a number of other subsidiaries, which reported significant growth in the Southeast Asian nation in the third quarter.

    Phone exports are significant to Vietnam’s exports, with the value of 2015 shipments up by 27.8 percent at $30.17 billion, or 19 percent of the country’s total exports, customs data show.

    Just weeks after the roll-out of the Galaxy Note 7 “phablet” in September, Samsung was forced to recall 2.5 million units globally following complaints its battery was exploding while charging.

    With images of charred phones flooding social media, the unprecedented recall was a humiliation for a firm that prides itself as an icon of innovation and quality, and the timing of the crisis could not have been worse.

    Samsung Malaysia has announced the latest 2017 version Galaxy A lineup for the local market that features IP68 certified water and dust resistance along with built-in Samsung Pay function.

    The all-new Galaxy A series 2017 that was introduced include Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7. The main differences between the two are the screen size and battery capacity. The Galaxy A5 comes with a 5.2 inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a 3,000 mAh size battery. Galaxy A7 on the other hand features a 5.7 inch Full HD Super AMOLED display with a 3,600 mAh size battery.

    In order to recover their profit lost due to Galaxy Note 7 issues, Samsung decided to launch the Galaxy On7 in South Korea. The phone is 55-inch and is packed with 3GB Ram and a 16GB memory. It is metal framed and comes with an 8-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel back camera.

    The Samsung Galaxy On7 is available in two different colors of Black and Gold. It is priced at 399,000 won, which is more or less $399. The phone is available with features similar to its flagship models, like the F1.0 aperture that allows filming even on a low light setting. It is also available with fingerprint recognition and many more.

    It should be remembered that the Galaxy On5and the Galaxy On7 were launched last year in India, but they were restricted in most South Asian countries. On the other hand, the Galaxy On7 is going global after it was launched in China last September and India just last month.

    When it comes to features, the Galaxy On7 does not disappoint. It comes with 5.5-inch touchscreen display and in 1920 x 1080 pixels. The one that was launched in South Korea is available with a 1.6GHz processor, while the Indian and Chinese versions come with Snapdragon 625 chips.

    When it comes to its camera feature, the phone can take impressive selfies as well as video chats. Both front and back cameras come with f/1.9 apertures. The Galaxy On7 runs in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and operates with 4G LTE connectivity. It also comes with a metal body that never fails to add a touch of class.

    LG and Apple, the two known rivals of Samsung, were able to experience great sales in South Korea with their models V20 and iPhone 7 respectively. The said boost of sales is blamed to the Note 7 dilemma.But with the coming of the Galaxy On7, Samsung hopes it can make up for the loss profit.

    It’s rare to call anything “absolutely stunning,” let alone a blue and slightly orange phone of all things, but Samsung managed to extract that statement out of him when he had some hands-on with the Galaxy Note 7 (RIP). And I wasn’t the only one to think that. So what’s Samsung to do with this splendidly concocted color now that it can’t market and sell it on the Note 7? Well, it’s releasing it for its other flagship device, the Galaxy S7 Edge.

    This new color was leaked recently but it’s now official with both Samsung Taiwan and Singapore confirming its release in their respective countries. In Singapore, the Coral Blue variant of the S7 Edge will be available on November, seemingly only in the 32GB storage configuration, and it will be priced at SGD 1098 (approx. $789). In Taiwan, the new color will be available earlier, starting November 1, and will retail for NTD 24,900 (approx. $787).

    There’s no confirmation of availability in other countries, but common sense says this color will probably be offered elsewhere to fill the gap that the Galaxy Note 7 burned in Samsung’s retail availability.

    If you recall, a photo leak last week revealed a new Blue Coral variant of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, and that it’s headed to Verizon in the US. Now, the South Korean company has officially confirmed the new Galaxy S7 edge color.

    Specifically, the confirmation came from Samsung’s Singapore subsidiary which announced the retail availability for the handset on its official website.

    “Samsung today also announced the retail availability of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge 4G+ in Blue Coral, adding a stunning colour variant to this sleek and stylish device,” the company said in a press release.

    “Currently available in Black Onyx, Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium and Pink Gold, the new colour variant of the Galaxy S7 edge 4G+ features a refined design coupled with powerful functionality while encased in a cool blue hue.”

    As for availability, the subsidiary said the phone (32GB variant) will go on sale in the Asian country starting November 5. It will carry a price tag of SGD 1,098 ($787).

    For example, a good place to look for a Note 7 is Hong Kong, as a store there is selling the recalled model at a special price, even though it’s pretty clear that using this phone is no longer recommended.

    Samsung: Stop using the Note 7!

    Samsung made it very clear in the official recall published October 13 that using a Note 7 is no longer safe, so it’s working with retailers to get all phones off the market and replace them with S7 Edge or offer full returns to customers.

    “Since the affected devices can overheat and pose a safety risk, we are asking consumers with a Galaxy Note7 to power it down and contact the carrier or retail outlet where they purchased their device,” Samsung explained.

    ‘So why would anyone still purchase a Note 7?’ you could ask. The answer is pretty simple: if they get a Note 7 at a special price (read heavily discounted), they can then return it to Samsung and receive a brand new S7 Edge, the price difference between the two, as well as $100 in bill credit.

    So it could all prove to be a pretty smart move for those looking to make some extra money, although we’re pretty sure that there’ll always be people saying that it is not worth the effort.

    In the meantime, keep in mind that using a Note 7 is not safe by any means, even though there are so many people out there who refuse to return it. The risk of overheating and the battery catching fire is pretty big, so it’s indeed a good idea to send it back to Samsung or the retailer and get an S7 Edge instead.

    Samsung kills the Galaxy Note 7 for good

    Samsung is permanently discontinuing production and sales of the Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, owing to safety fears over defective batteries — including in replacement handsets the company had subsequently sent to customers following a recall of original devices.

    The news was reported earlier by the WSJ, and a spokeswomen for Samsung confirmed it is ending production of the device, telling: “We can confirm the report that Samsung has permanently discontinued the production of Galaxy Note7.”

    The company did not provide any additional statement explaining its decision but in a filing about ending production with South Korean regulators it cites ‘customer safety’ as the reason.

    Yesterday Samsung had asked carriers and resellers to halt sales and exchanges of Note 7 devices, as reports of problems with replacement handsets mounted. Note 7 owners were offered a full refund or a refund for a different Samsung smartphone, along with a $25 gift certificate or other add-on to sweeten the hassle of dealing with two rounds of recalls.

    The initial recall of the circa 2.5 million Note 7s in circulation was announced in early September.

    The company had also previously said it was adjusting production of the Note 7 to, in its words, “take further steps to ensure quality and safety matters”.

    However, in the event, and given the mounting PR nightmare of even replacement Note 7s having a demonstrable risk of an exploding battery — coupled with the model being namechecked as a safety hazard at airports and on flights all over the world — it’s hardly a surprise Samsung has decided to pull the plug and put the Note 7 out of its misery.

    Aside from the damage to Samsung’s Galaxy brand of being associated with exploding batteries, the cost of withdrawing the Note 7 will not come cheap. Reuters cites analysts estimating that a permanent end to Note 7 sales could cost the company up to $17 billion.

    Meanwhile, the company’s stock price has also taken a substantial hit on the news of the Note 7’s nixing: falling by 8 per cent today, its biggest percentage decline since October 2008, as investors wiped some $19 billion off the value of the company.

    Garuda Indonesia Bans Samsung Galaxy 7 Note From All Flights

    Garuda Indonesia has issued a ban on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 for all its flights starting from Monday due to safety issues.

    This move ensues the recent ban by US Department of Transportation on the device, including its recalled and replaced units, after reports of the smartphone catching fire.

    Garuda Indonesia VP corporate communications Benny S. Butarbutar said in a press release Monday that passengers in possession of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 would not be permitted to board the aircraft. Bringing the device through carry on baggage, checked-in luggage, or cargo was also strictly prohibited.

    This is the second ban issued by the airline regarding Samsung Galaxy Note 7. In early September, it banned the use of the device during flights as well as warned passengers not to charge the battery or store the smartphone in checked baggage.

    Samsung has already been forced to recall more than 2.5 million devices due to faulty batteries. The company has instructed users to “power down and stop using the device”, and announced the permanent end of its production last week.

    Samsung permanently halts Note7 production

    Samsung has officially halted production of the Galaxy Note7, following multiple reports of batteries overheating and catching fire even in devices replaced during last month’s recall.

    The company confirmed it has permanently discontinued production of its flagship smartphone, leaving the company without a high-end device to compete against the iPhone 7 with during the holiday shopping season.

    During last month’s major product recall, Samsung had blamed a single battery supplier for the overheating problem that caused the fires, and had switched suppliers for production of the replacement models. But with multiple reports that even replaced devices are catching fire, this explanation is in doubt.

    Samsung is offering Note7 buyers either full refunds, or the option to replace their device with an S7 or S7 Edge and receive a refund for the difference in price.

    Analysts are predicting that permanently ending Note7 sales could cost Samsung up to $17 billion in lost sales, and the potential for reputational damage is arguably even greater.

    Curiously, analysis from mobile application technology company Apteligent suggests that the reports of exploding batteries have done little to deter usage of Note7 devices. As of Sunday, the smartphone reached its highest usage rate since in August launch – 10% higher than the date of the recall. The first reports of replacement devices exploding began circulating days earlier.

    Launch of Indonesia’s First Samsung Galaxy Studio Experience Center

    The latest Samsung gadgets that can be connected to handsets are available for customers to view and purchase. Not only Galaxy smartphones and tablets are on display, but also the entire Galaxy ecosystem, such as the Gear VR and Gear S2, as well as other Samsung products. Data packages are also available to provide internet access as well as digital content to make it easier for customers to access the digital world.

    The Galaxy Studio Experience Center, located at Indosat Ooredoo’s store at Sarinah in Central Jakarta, has a new design that has never been used by other network operators. It is also more spacious to allow better interaction between customers, who can enjoy experience a digital lifestyle, such as iflix video streaming on a big screen and music streaming on Spotify.

    IM3 Ooredoo subscribers can also purchase data packages such as Freedom Combo, Freedom Postpaid and Super Plan, to watch TV shows and films on iflix for hours without using their main data quota.

    The experience center is a strategic cooperation between the two companies to support retail sales. Indosat Ooredoo and Samsung both have the vision of giving customers an enjoyable and satisfactory experience with the Studio Experience Center.

    Indosat Ooredoo director Joy Wahjudi said the experience center was established to provide a one-stop service for Indonesians.

    The two companies are both committed to establishing experience centers to enable customers to obtain information and try out the latest products and services.

    “We aim to also establish studio experience centers in other Indosat Ooredoo stores,” Joy said.
