  • Airlines ban in-flight Note7 use after global recall

Airlines ban in-flight Note7 use after global recall

Multiple airlines have banned the use of Samsung’s Galaxy Note7 smartphones while onboard after the company issued a global recall of the devices due to reports of exploding batteries.

Thai Airways is among the latest airline to ban the use of the smartphone online, as well as storing the device in checked baggage.

Other major airlines including Singapore Airlines, Australia’s Qantas and the UAE’s Etihad have already issued bans. Aviation authorities in Europe, the US and Japan have also issued safety warnings.

Samsung has meanwhile urged all users of Note7 smartphones subject to the global recall to turn in their devices as soon as possible for replacement

The company issued a global recall for the devices last week following reports of faulty batteries overheating or even catching fire. The company said that prior to the recall there had been 35 reported cases of malfunctions globally.

Samsung Electronics Australia announced that replacement stock will be available to local customers from September 21, and the company will resume selling the devices in the market in early October.

  • Samsung Pay China goes live

    Samsung Pay China goes live

Samsung Pay China is live after being launched by the South Korean smartphone giant this week.

Samsung Electronics said Tuesday the introduction of the Samsung Pay China mobile payment service will speed its efforts to expand the scope of its flagship mobile payment platform globally.

The South Korean tech company said Chinese users of high-end Galaxy smartphones can now use Samsung Pay in cooperation with China-based bank card giant UnionPay.

The mobile platform supports magnetic secure transmission technology that works on traditional credit card machines. Like rivals Apple Pay and Android Pay, it also supports near field communication technology that requires a separate transaction device.

Users of UnionPay debit and credit cards can now use Samsung Pay-equipped smartphones to make purchases, including the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge just released earlier this month.

Samsung Pay joined forces with nine major Chinese banks, while six more partners will be added in the near future, Samsung added.

Samsung said it will also make efforts to roll out more devices that support its mobile payment platform.

Samsung Pay, first released in South Korea and the US last year, currently boasts around 5 million users. Samsung said last month it is also preparing to launch in Australia, Brazil, Spain and a handful of other countries.

  • Samsung’s Galaxy Phone Most Valuable Brand in S. Korea

Samsung’s Galaxy Phone Most Valuable Brand in S. Korea

South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy smartphone was selected as the most valuable brand in South Korea for the fifth consecutive year, a survey showed Sunday.

The Samsung Galaxy phone ranked first in the brand survey by Seoul-based market researcher Brandstock, followed by E-Mart, a discount store chain by retail giant Shinsegae Co.

Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s gateway airport, climbed up one notch to take third place.

Kakao Talk, South Korea’s biggest mobile messenger with 47 million users, and Naver, the nation’s No. 1 Internet portal, came next, the researcher said.

The brand value of German automakers suffered after Volkswagen admitted that millions of its diesel cars worldwide were equipped with software that was used to cheat on emissions tests.

BMW’s rank tumbled from 12th to 31st, and Volkswagen, which ranked 71st last year, dropped out of the top 100, following the emissions cheating scandal, it said.

Samsung Pay to power in-store purchases on Galaxy S6

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. has unveiled Samsung Pay, a mobile payment service that will enable MasterCard cardholders to use their Samsung Galaxy S6 for everyday in-store purchases.

Owners of the new device will be able to use their MasterCard credit and debit cards from participating banks directly through Samsung Pay.

It will work at both contactless-enabled and most traditional point of sale terminals. This means that every purchase made with a MasterCard using a Samsung Galaxy S6 will offer the enhanced security, benefits and guarantees of a digital MasterCard transaction, including the latest tokenization technology.

“This is an exciting time for payments,” said Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer, MasterCard. “As consumers are increasingly relying on their mobile devices in their everyday lives, we are excited to work with an industry leader like Samsung to deliver new payment options to our cardholders around the world.

Injong Rhee, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics, added that Samsung’s KNOX security platform and fingerprint authentication make Samsung Pay transactions highly secure and easy to use.

Samsung Pay will first be made available for US consumers this summer. MasterCard will be working with Samsung to roll out Samsung Pay to additional global markets, including Korea.
