  • Honda To Cut Car Output At Two Japanese Plants In October

Honda To Cut Car Output At Two Japanese Plants In October

Honda Motor Co said on Thursday it would reduce car output by up to 40% at two Japanese plants for the rest of October from its earlier plans, as the company battles with persistent supply chain and logistical problems.

Two lines at Honda’s Suzuka plant in western Japan will cut production by about 20% in October, while its assembly plant in Saitama prefecture, north of Tokyo, will lower production plans by about 40% for the month.

The automaker said it would cut vehicle production at Suzuka by 40% and Saitama by 30% in early October last month.

Honda blamed delays in receiving parts and logistics on COVID-19 outbreaks and semiconductor shortages. The output reduction will affect vehicles, including the Vezel sport-utility vehicle, Stepwgn minivan, and Civic compact car.

Honda’s production at the two plants returned to normal for June after an earlier reduction, but it began adjusting again for July.

Last week, Honda’s rival Toyota Motor Corp lowered its October production target by 6.3% to about 750,000 vehicles because of a shortage of semiconductors.

That announcement came about a week after it had lowered the production target for that month to around 800,000, about 100,000 short of its average monthly production plan. (This story has been corrected to fix the month Honda began cutting production to July from August in paragraph 5)

  • Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India To Launch Flex-Fuel Engined Motorcycle

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India To Launch Flex-Fuel Engined Motorcycle

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) confirmed that will launch motorcycles with flex-fuel engines in the next two years. Atsushi Ogata, President, MD & CEO, HMSI, said that the company’s internal target is to launch at least one commuter motorcycle with flex-fuel engine by the end of 2024, although he did not mention which model will it be. Honda already has motorcycles with flex-fuel engines, which it sells in Brazil.

TVS Motor Company was the first two-wheeler company to launch a flex-fuel motorcycle, which was the Apache RTR 200 Fi E100 in July 2019, which could run on petrol as well as Ethanol. It had an E100 200 cc single-cylinder engine which has a power output of 20.7 bhp at 8,500 rpm and peak torque of 18.1 Nm at 7,000 rpm. TVS claimed a top speed of 129 kmph. The ethanol powered Apache gets electronic fuel injection with twin-spray-twin-port system that ensures better power delivery while burning cleaner and emitting up to 50 per cent less Benzene and Butadiene gases.

HMSI’s announcement comes at the same time as Toyota showcasing the Corolla Altis Flex-Fuel model, earlier this month, which will be launched soon. The new Corolla Altis is powered by a 1.8-litre flex fuel engine paired with the company’s self-charging strong hybrid system. The debut marks the return of name plate to India after Toyota pulled the plug on the previous generation model in 2020. The flex fuel

  • Honda runs out of motorcycle parts, buyers take hit

Honda runs out of motorcycle parts, buyers take hit

Honda, which has an 80 percent share of the motorbike market in Vietnam, faces a shortage of parts. After years of using a semi-automatic motorcycle, Huy Manh of Hanoi decided to buy an automatic one, a Honda Vision listed at VND32-35 million (US$1,400-1,530).

But the price quoted at HEADs (Honda Exclusive Authorized Dealers) was VND44 million, and he has to wait for two or three weeks for delivery.

The production shortage and long queues in HCMC mean many showrooms have stopped taking deposits since they cannot guarantee delivery in time. It used to take buyers only around two or three days, and up to two weeks in case of special options, to get a Honda bike delivered. The waiting time is now two weeks to a month.

Honda blamed it on a global disruption in the supply of parts and materials. Its locally assembled models like Vision, Lead and SH Mode are the worst affected. It is impossible to know when supply would return to normal levels, it said, adding it is trying its best to ensure supply to dealers.

Buyers have to pay 20-30 percent more than the listed prices for a motorbike. They had been hiked by 1-5 percent only last month.

Honda sold two million vehicles last year, or 80 percent of the market share, according to the Vietnam Association of Motorbike Manufacturers, whose members include all major companies.

Supply is more stable for other producers, but their shares are too small to satisfy the market.

Honda’s shortage not only affects its own sales but also related businesses such as accessories, painting and maintenance.

  • GM and Honda To Produce ‘Attainable EVs’ In Bid To Surpass Tesla Sales

GM and Honda To Produce ‘Attainable EVs’ In Bid To Surpass Tesla Sales

General Motors and Honda Motor Co said on Tuesday they will develop a series of lower-priced electric vehicles based on a new joint platform, producing potentially millions of cars from 2027 in a bid to beat Tesla in sales.

The announcement expands on plans for GM to begin building two electric SUVs for Honda starting in 2024 – the Honda Prologue and an Acura model.

The automakers said the new deal is for “affordable” EVs, including compact crossover vehicles, built using GM’s Ultium battery technology. The compact crossover is the biggest selling auto sector in the world with annual volumes of more than 13 million vehicles, the companies said.

The companies declined to say how much they are investing as part of the new collaboration.

GM Chief Executive Mary Barra said Tuesday at an Axios event the pricing will come in below the $30,000 price tag planned for the electric Chevrolet Equinox SUV. She said the new lower-priced vehicles would be “attainable EVs.”

She said the new vehicle is part of GM’s plan to surpass Tesla in EV sales.

“We have a very important goal… that by mid-decade, by 2025, we’ll sell more EVs in the U.S. than anyone else and to do that, you need to have a portfolio of vehicles,” Barra said, noting GM plans a wide range of small to large EVs. “We definitely can scale and can do it quickly.”

The companies said they will also discuss future battery technology collaboration for electric vehicles in a push to drive down costs.

The deal is part of GM’s push to achieve carbon neutrality in its global products and operations by 2040 and eliminate tailpipe emissions from light-duty vehicles in the United States by 2035.

Honda has said it aims to reach carbon neutrality on a global basis by 2050.

The Japanese carmaker owns a stake in GM’s Cruise self-driving car subsidiary and the carmakers are co-developing the Cruise Origin autonomous EV. The companies also have a joint venture to develop and produce hydrogen fuel-cell systems at a plant in Brownstown, Michigan.

“Honda and GM will build on our successful technology collaboration to help achieve a dramatic expansion in the sales of electric vehicles,” Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe said.

  • Honda Cars India To Hike Prices Across Range From August 2021

Honda Cars India To Hike Prices Across Range From August 2021

Honda Cars India plans to increase the prices of its entire model range effective from August 2021. As reported by PTI, the Japanese automaker has cited an increase in input cost as the primary reason for the price hike. The carmaker looks to offset the impact of a sharp increase in the procurement cost of various essential commodities like steel and precious metals. However, the company hasn’t revealed the quantum of the hike, which is expected to vary from model to model.

This will be the third price hike this year as the company had earlier increased prices in April because of rising input costs. In January 2021, prices of Honda cars were hiked as the company cited a rise in input costs to hike prices. The carmaker has four models in its product line-up for the Indian market, including the City and the Amaze sedan.

Rajesh Goel, Senior VP and Director, Marketing and Sales, Honda Cars India today PTI, “The prices for raw materials like steel, aluminium and precious metals have increased sharply and many of them are at an all-time high, impacting our input costs significantly.”

He further added that the carmaker is presently working out the details of the price hike which could be implemented from next month.

“Our endeavour is to keep the cost of acquisition lower, so we are currently deliberating on how much of the additional cost we can absorb and how much will be inevitable to be passed on to our customers. The revised prices will be implemented from next month,” Goel noted.

With input costs going up, Maruti Suzuki India last month announced that it would increase prices of its entire product portfolio in the second quarter of the financial year 2022. The Indo-Japanese auto major has already effected a price increase in April 2021.

  • Honda’s First All-Electric SUV To Be Called Prologue

Honda’s First All-Electric SUV To Be Called Prologue

Honda today announced that its first new mass-market battery-electric vehicle will be called Prologue, signaling a new electrified era that will lead to the company’s vision for 100% zero-emission vehicle sales in North America by 2040. An all-new SUV coming to market in early 2024, the battery-electric Honda Prologue will be, according to the company ‘highly competitive’ but specific details about the new vehicle will be released over the coming months.

In addition to the Honda Prologue, the company will introduce an all-electric Acura SUV in the 2024 calendar year. Both will utilize the highly flexible global EV platform powered by Ultium batteries based on the company’s strategic partnership with General Motors. Honda also plans to launch a new series of EV models in the second half of the decade based on a new e:Architecture, with development led by Honda.

In April 2021, Honda global CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, announced a vision to achieve carbon-neutrality for its products and corporate activities by 2050, including key targets for sales of electrified vehicles. This vision calls for the sales ratio of battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles in North America to progress from 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2035 to 100% by 2040.

Honda has a long history in bringing electrified vehicles to market in the U.S., beginning almost a quarter-century ago with the EV Plus electric vehicle (1997); to America’s first hybrid, the Honda Insight (1999); the Honda FCX (2002), the industry’s first fuel cell vehicle in the hands of individual customers, and the Clarity series (2017). As Honda prepares for the launch of Prologue, the company will introduce hybrid-electric systems to more core models to continue to reduce CO2 emissions and bridge customers to the volume of battery-electric vehicles now in development.

  • Honda PCX Electric Scooter Patented In India

Honda PCX Electric Scooter Patented In India

Honda has filed patent registrations for the PCX electric scooter in India, and rumors are abuzz about the possibility of the PCX electric scooter being considered for an India launch. Now, Honda did showcase the PCX electric scooter at the Auto Expo 2018, but filing a patent doesn’t necessarily mean the product is being considered for launch. What is of importance is perhaps the content of the patent filings, which shows a removable battery, which can be taken off the scooter and plugged conveniently at home, or at the workplace.

The scooter comes with a 4.2 kW motor and a removable 50.4 V lithium-ion battery pack. And the battery can be charged without removing it as well, through a charging cable, but being removable just offers the added convenience. The Honda PCX offered in global markets, come with an internal combustion engine hybrid, as well as full-electric powertrains. In India though, reports suggest that the PCX electric is the one being patented.

The PCX has an aggressive design, with neat lines, with twin-pod headlamps up front, and a tall windscreen, giving it a mini-maxi look. The scooter comes with a split floorboard, black alloy wheels, telescopic front forks, twin rear shocks, and disc brakes, with single-channel ABS. On the feature list, there’s a full digital LCD panel, remote start key, and others. Under the seat are twin battery packs, which offer a range of 40 km, while the controller unit is positioned under the floorboard.

While the filing of the patent for the PCX electric may sound like exciting news, it’s not certain that Honda will go on to launch it. In the past, HMSI has patented several models, including the Honda Grom and others, and according to sources, sometimes these patents are used for Honda’s ongoing R&D efforts for future products in India, rather than indicate that the patented product will be launched in India. It’s early days yet to predict anything, or if HMSI is indeed working on an electric project, or planning to start working on an electric two-wheeler project for India. And that may not be the PCX electric scooter as we know it in its current form.

  • Honda Vietnam to recall cars over fuel pump issue

Honda Vietnam to recall cars over fuel pump issue

Honda Vietnam has announced it would recall 27,640 locally assembled and imported vehicles to resolve a fuel pump malfunction.

The affected models are City (8,626 units), Civic (3,624 units), CR-V (10,687 units), HR-V (3,630 units), Jazz (630 units) and Accord (442 units) made in 2019. Out of nearly 28,000 defective vehicles, 19,014 were locally assembled, with the rest imported from Thailand. The recall will start this Wednesday.

Faults related to the fuel pump installed in these vehicles may involve defective impellers. Over time, the pump may crack, deform and prevent the engine from starting or stalling.

At present, there is no record of safety threats due to the fuel pump error in the Vietnamese market. Vehicle owners are advised to visit authorized dealerships to have their engines checked.

Replacements will be made when spare parts become available. Spare parts and related services would be completely free of charge. For vehicles imported through non-genuine import dealerships, in case customers request, Honda Vietnam would still provide relevant information.

Honda was the fourth best-selling auto brand in Vietnam in the first quarter of this year with 6,782 units sold, up 24.7 percent year-on-year.
