UK chooses HK for its biggest trade event abroad

World-leading innovators from the UK and Asia will take part in the GREAT Festival of Innovation, which will be held in 50 days’ time. The Festival will be a platform to connect the cutting-edge businesses and brilliant thinkers who will drive trade partnerships of the future, while highlighting the UK’s position as a global centre for innovation.

Held from 21 to 24 March 2018 at Asia Society Hong Kong Centre, GREAT Festival of Innovation will showcase over 100 speakers across 60 engaging sessions, panel discussions and interactive workshops which will explore how innovation and technology is set to change the way we work, live, play and learn in the future.

Leading the discussion will be an impressive line-up of some of the world’s brightest minds, business pioneers, innovators and policy makers from UK and Asia. Some of the key speakers set to take the stage include Charles Bowman, Lord Mayor of London, Paul Priestman, Chairman of PriestmanGoode, Richard Deverell, Director of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Tea Uglow, Creative Director of Google’s Creative Lab in Sydney, and Eiji Uda, Chief Technology Innovation Officer of Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee.

The core programme of the GREAT Festival of Innovation will explore four key themes over its four days.

The first two days will be dedicated to the theme ‘work’ and ‘live’. The first day will discuss topics such as sustainable energy, cybersecurity, FinTech, workplaces of the future and a discussion on some of the most pressing issues around artificial intelligence.

The second day the discussion will move to the way we live, and explore a wide range of topics from smart cities to autonomous transport, and sustainable farming to alternative energy sources.

More interesting for our readers are definitely the third and fourth day. Day three,  speakers reimagine how we ‘play’, discussing how innovation, technology and creative thinking will alter the future of fashion, luxury, art and sport in a climate in which consumers are becoming curators. Highlight speakers will include Chester King, Founder and CEO of British eSports Association, Tom Aikens, Chef, Tristram Hunt, Director of V&A Museum and a leading historian and journalist, and Duncan Pescod, CEO of West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.

Day four, the Festival will conclude with insights into the future of education and learning. Through talks and hands-on events led by educators and students alike, audience members will understand how leading sectors are engaging with learning institutions to strategically link higher education, research and business to help create tomorrow. Andre Fu, architect, designer and Founder of Andre Fu Living will be among the key names to feature on this day.

Attending the Festival will be business leaders and decision makers, with a strong delegation coming from the UK looking to create new business partnerships with their Asia counterparts.

Supporting the Festival is a rich Culture Programme showcasing the best of British talent. Taking place across multiple venues, in unexpected places and into the evenings, the Programme will showcase the most captivating music, dance, visual art, literature, theatre, food and drink and moving image in the UK today.

From storytelling to soundscapes, live music to wearable technology and even immersive food and drink experiences, the GREAT Festival of Innovation promises to tell the story of UK culture in a truly original way. In conjunction with the invitation-only Festival will be a host of satellite cultural events open to the public, the full programme of which will be announced shortly.

Marking the 50-day countdown, the UK International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, said the Festival showcases a country prime for investment opportunities.

UK International Trade Secretary, Dr Liam Fox said:

“In 50 days, the GREAT Festival of Innovation will bring together the best entrepreneurs and the most advanced technology from across the UK and Asia to explore how we will work, live, play and learn in the future.

“Led by my international economic department, this festival will be a major showcase for our talent, creativity and design on the world stage. From smart robots and cities to autonomous vehicles, the UK is already a global technology hub and the festival will help secure that position for generations to come.”

Director General, UK Department for International Trade in Hong Kong, Paul McComb said:

“Taking part at a historic moment for UK and Asian economies, the event highlights that the UK is open for business and committed to Asian trade partners. The Festival will serve as a platform for creating new life-long partnerships, strengthening relationships between British and Asian business leaders and investors that will drive a future of free trade and prosperity.”

The first round of announced speakers from the UK joining the GREAT Festival of Innovation includes: Dr. Liam Fox, UK International Trade Secretary; Charles Bowman, Lord Mayor of London; Tristram Hunt, Director of V&A and leading UK historian and journalist; and Ian Stuart, CEO, HSBC UK, to name a few.

  • 8 best citie to live on this side of the world

8 best citie to live on this side of the world

Time Out’s City Life Index, a survey of 15,000 people in 32 global cities, has been released, and it shows which ones promise the most fun and excitement in 2018. Eight of them are on this side of the world.

The survey, conducted by Tapestry Research, questioned residents on a variety of aspects of city life.

It ranked cities in categories across food, drink, culture, friendliness, affordability, happiness, and liveability.

It also “found the key factors that make residents find their city exciting,” from dining out often to feeling proud of where they are from.

Here, their ranking in ascending order along with their overall scores:

    31. Singapore (98.7) — Those from Singapore may not rate its culture scene highly, but they do value the city’s safety and are perfectly comfortable walking around at night.

    28. Sydney (106.1) — While they may think the city is lacking in things to do and good restaurants, Sydney residents live a healthy life, with 66% having exercised in the past week and 38% never having taken drugs. They know how to party, though, and are the world’s No. 1 vodka drinkers.

    26. Hong Kong (109.6) — Seventy-five percent of residents said the public transport in Hong Kong was great, contributing to the city’s overall score. They’re also among the biggest restaurant-goers in the world.

    24. Bangkok (111.0) — The survey revealed Bangkok as the world’s street-food capital, with more people eating on their feet than anywhere else — 42 times a year, on average. They’re also the biggest restaurant-goers, with 94% of respondents having visited a restaurant in the past week.

    22. Beijing (113.0) — The city may be exciting, but the commute is long, with 6% of Beijing residents even commuting for two to three hours a day.

    19. Tokyo (117.7) — Tokyo residents love their food — they visit restaurants more than most other cities on the list.

    16. Shanghai (119.5) — It may not come cheap, but there’s plenty to do in Shanghai, where residents say that while it is tough to find love, 79% believe it is easy to find a more casual encounter.

    4. Melbourne (132.3) — This Australian city came out above all others in terms of happiness, with nine in 10 residents saying they felt happy within the past 24 hours. They also find it easy to make friends and think the food-and-drink scene is one of the city’s best features.

  • Hooters Hong Kong to face legal action from unpaid rent

Hooters Hong Kong to face legal action from unpaid rent

Again accused of failing to keep abreast of rent payments, Hooters Hong Kong is facing legal action and eviction from its Wyndham Street premises in Central.

A writ filed by landlord Dor Fook last week says the American restaurant chain has failed to pay nearly HK$1.52 million (US$194,300) in rent since October.

The document says Hooters Restaurants signed a 10-year lease in March 2016 for its ground-floor venue, agreeing to pay $330,000 a month for the first year. It also signed a five-year lease for a room above the shop, agreeing to a monthly rent of $24,000 for the first year.

Known for its buxom female servers in skimpy outfits, the restaurant is accused of not paying its rent and rates for the two spaces, constituting a repudiation of the lease.

Seeking to repossess the premises, the landlord will also claim $371,700 for every month the restaurant stays put, starting from this month, and $17,932 a month for rates.

This follows a previous threat of eviction in September, when Dor Fook lodged a legal bid for $1.13 million, about three months’ rent. Hooters Asia president Daniel Yong then said the company had paid off all its outstanding debt the day before the bid.

However, it is reported this week that Yong has left the company.

  • Hong Kong Retail to Sell Well In Next Five Years, PwC Says

Hong Kong Retail to Sell Well In Next Five Years, PwC Says

After steady recovery last year, Hong Kong’s retail sector is expected to improve further this year on the back of a bullish economic outlook, both globally and in China, says PWC Hong Kong.

Retail sales in Hong Kong for the first 11 months of last year eased up 1.8 per cent over the same period in 2016, and with the traditional shopping spree toward year-end, the full-year increase could reach 3 per cent (government retail sales figures will be released on Thursday).

Despite store consolidation and a retreat from main-street locations, luxury goods, especially jewellery and watches, was one of the best-performing sectors last year and is expected to further recover,

Hong Kong’s retail sector could have growth between 4 to 6 per cent this year, which is equivalent to about HK$465 to 480 billion, with a positive outlook for the next five years.

“All-time-high stock and real-estate markets, both local and global, have created a significant wealth effect, and much improved sentiment in consumption,” says PWC’s Michael Cheng.

“In addition, tourist arrival numbers in Hong Kong, particularly from China, have been encouraging and recovering steadily under the much better and more stable political and social environment.

Combined with a low jobless rate and a weakening US dollar against major currencies, Hong Kong’s retail sector should be recovering well in the medium term and exceed the all-time high of 2013 within the next five years.”

    Tourism key

However, the sector still depends on tourism, particularly from China. From January to November, Mainland Chinese tourist numbers grew 3.6 per cent year on year, compared to 3.1 per cent for all tourists.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has slashed tariffs on 187 imported consumer goods, including wines and spirits, pharmaceuticals, and food. While this will strengthen domestic consumption in China, PWC says it will have only a modest effect on Hong Kong retail.

“Hong Kong still enjoys the world’s freest economy, providing high-quality goods under a well-established legal system that provides excellent consumer protection,” says PWC China tax partner Rebecca Wong. “This encourages legal imports and reduces the attractiveness of purchases made through irregular channels.”

However, Cheng says retailers need to transform, from being disrupted to becoming disruptors.

“Embracing technology and data to provide unique customer experiences through diversified platforms and logistics networks are the keys to success.”

  • Meitu try on e-commerce to boost revenues

Meitu try on e-commerce to boost revenues

China’s beauty-enhancing app developer and smartphone maker Meitu is looking to boost revenues by expanding further into e-commerce, leading a $5 million funding round in Goxip, a Hong Kong-based online shopping platform.

Juliette Gimenez, CEO and co-founder at Goxip, said that the Chinese photo-editing applications maker was the biggest contributor to its series A funding round, making it the first e-commerce company in which Xiamen-based Meitu has invested.

“Meitu will be a strategic partner,” Gimenez said. In addition to the investment, the two companies would cooperate in various ways, including on Goxip’s expansion in the lucrative mainland China market, she said

Gimenez said she started talking to Meitu’s executives, including founder Cai Wensheng, about six months ago, when the selfie app company was seeking to diversify.

Meitu, whose image-processing applications are reportedly used to edit more than half of China’s selfies on social media, now labels itself a “mobile internet company.”

“We will not comment on one single project,” Meitu’s spokesperson said. However, she added: “Meitu’s investment strategy has always been revolving around new technology, beauty and user growth.”

Last year Meitu rolled out two e-commerce platforms. MeituDIY allowed users to design and create personalized outfits using artificial intelligence and to purchase the items from its platform. The other application, MeituBeauty, specializing in cosmetics and skincare, allows shoppers to try out the products by uploading their selfie.

The investment in Goxip is also expected to accelerate Meitu’s overseas expansion.

Goxip partners with more than 500 international online retailers. Its data base comprises more than 36,000 luxury brands and 5 million items, according to its website. The fashion retail platform allows users to search similar products by uploading photos.

Despite a market cap of 48.97 billion Hong Kong dollars ($6.26 billion), Hong Kong-listed Meitu has not made a profit since it was founded in 2008. But its business segment including online advertising, e-commerce and virtual item sales turned profitable for the first time in the first half of last year, according to its financial filings.

In December 2017, Meitu acquired a stake in Hong Kong-based media company PressLogic, which uses data and technologies including machine learning to better target advertising on social media.

  • PCCW launches e-commerce platform Habbitzz to plug Hong Kong market

PCCW launches e-commerce platform Habbitzz to plug Hong Kong market

Hong Kong tech company PCCW is about to launch a B2C e-commerce platform, Habbitzz.

Kicking off on March 6, it will feature 15,000 SKUs from more than 1000 international brands covering alcohol, babycare, electronics, fashion and beauty, sports and lifestyle, and travel.

“Think of us as the Amazon of Hong Kong, but remove all the low-end products,” says Habbitzz CEO Alex Bono, who is also senior VP of e-commerce for PCCW solutions, the IT and outsourcing services division of the conglomerate.

PCCW has been preparing the venture for nine months, and says it came up with the name Habbitzz because it wants Hong Kong consumers to move beyond their more traditional habits of shopping.

Bono says the goal is to have 100,000 products and services by this time next year, with a broader O2O strategy in the works by 2019 or 2020.

Alongside the main business of Habbitzz Retail – the webstore reselling products from both mainstream and niche merchants – are two other business lines: Habbitzz Express (warehouse and logistics support) and Habbitzz Services (CRM, data analytics and payment gateway technology).

    “At speed”

Bono says PCCW is letting Habbitzz have “more freedom to execute at speed”.

“One year in, this startup will be like five years in a corporation like PCCW that is accustomed to big, finalised products,” he says.

PCCW had previously tried to grow e-commerce “in a corporate way” with its e-commerce-as-a-service package. In November 2015, PCCW Solutions also ventured into e-commerce logistics. With LTF Asia, it jointly launched a network of automated lockers, House of Parcels, to store online orders for customer pick-up.

For Habbitzz, Bono has hired almost 100 employees based in Hong Kong and the Philippines including data scientists, software engineers, merchandisers, product managers, search-engine technologists and design specialists.

Habbitzz’s main local rival, HKTVMall, launched in 2015 and today handles 7600 daily orders, taking in an average of HK$537 an order from 180,000 products out of 2700 brands.

“There will be categories in which Habbitzz will overlap with HKTVMall, but we aim for premium positioning,” says Bono. “We will definitely not hold any cheap brands.”

He says Habbitzz is aiming for same-day or even a four-hour delivery window.

  • Hermes to receive HK$900 million from selling its space

Hermes to receive HK$900 million from selling its space

British property developer Chelsfield has bought the ground floor of The Galleria shopping centre in Central from French luxury brand Hermes for HK$900 million (US$115 million).

Comprising four retail shop units and a basement, the floor has a combined area of 7100sqft (660sqm).

Hermes makes a profit of $710 million through the sale of its former flagship space, after buying up the component units in succession since 2000 for a total of $190 million.

After deciding in 2016 to relocate its flagship to Prince’s Building, just a five-minute walk away, Hermes put the floor on the market.

For Chelsfield, the deal is its second acquisition of a commercial property in Hong Kong within a month. It partnered with Hong Kong real-estate investment firm Pamfleet to buy a shopping centre in North Point last month for $2 billion from Fortune Reit.

Chelsfield expanded to Asia in 2016, when it took over the real-estate division of the Dymon Asia Group. The Asia arm of the UK firm is now run by Dymon’s former management team led by former Grosvenor executive Nick Loup, who joined Chelsfield in 2015 as part of the takeover.

  • Telstra to invest in two HK-US cables

Telstra to invest in two HK-US cables

Australia’s Telstra has announced plans to invest in two new subsea cable systems connecting Hong Kong to the west coast of the US.

The company will invest in a half fiber pair on the Hong Kong Americas (HKA) cable and the equivalent of 6TBps over the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN).

The HKA cable is expected to be ready for service in 2020 and the PLCN to be complete in 2019.

Once complete, the two cables will be able to act as more direct routes between the US and Asia than Telstra’s part-owned Asia-America Gateway (AAG) cable system, helping to reduce latency and meet increasing demand for connectivity between Greater China, ASEAN and the US.

“As economic growth continues in China and South East Asia, so too does the demand for data. Together with the current AAG cable on which Telstra carries the most traffic today, these two investments will provide us with increased capacity across the important Hong Kong to US route, one of the fastest growing routes in the world for capacity demand,” Telstra group managing director of global services and international David Burns said.

“Our investment in capacity on PLCN and HKA will also provide our customers with greater resiliency due to bypassing areas prone to natural disasters and offering two direct, alternative paths to the AAG cable which connects South East Asia to the US west coast via Hong Kong, Guam and Hawaii.”

Meanwhile fellow Australian operator Vocus Communications has selected the ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) STT Tai Seng 1 data center to act as the point of presence in Singapore for its planned Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) subsea cable system.

The 4,600km ASC will link Singapore with Perth in Western Australia via Indonesia. It is expected to be completed in the third quarter.
