    Huawei’s chairman says that sourcing chips is its biggest problem

    Let’s use our imagination a little, shall we? Had the U.S. not placed Huawei on the Entity List for security reasons in 2019 and followed that up exactly a year to the day by changing Export rules banning Huawei from receiving chips from certain foundries using American technology, the smartphone market “league tables” would be different. Huawei would not have sold sub-brand Honor and would most likely be the top handset manufacturer on this planet.

    But the truth brings a harsher reality to Huawei as the manufacturer is predicted to finish the year as the seventh-largest smartphone shipper with Honor right behind it. Still, the company’s current rotating chairman (the position rotates, not the actual executive) Guo Ping is determined that Huawei will never drop out of the smartphone industry. Citing the U.S., Guo says that the policies of individual countries have no impact on Huawei’s place in the world and the firm will never limit its business to selling in China only.

    This morning, Guo told new Huawei employees that “The U.S. has created many difficulties for Huawei but they are solvable. It is in the supply chain where the US has a big impact on Huawei. We need more investment and innovation to deal with the US sanctions. Huawei has established and helped its industrial chain partners to solve the problems of supply continuity and competitiveness.”

    The Chairman said that Huawei employees should have the attitude that “what does not kill me makes me stronger,” and added that “if every employee works diligently and effectively and makes achievements, Huawei will become better and the U.S. will not be able to beat us.” For those who believe that the company should give us its mobile phone business, ponder this statistic.

    After real estate and automobiles, the mobile phone sector is the third-largest “industrial sector” in the world. This calls to mind the famous quote from bank robber Willie Sutton who was once asked why he robbed banks. “Because that’s where the money is,” was his reply. Why should Huawei give up on making phones when it still is where plenty of money lies.

    While being placed on the Entity List makes it hard for Huawei to access the U.S. supply chain, Guo says that the major issue affecting Huawei is its inability to buy chips. The chairman says, “At present, the biggest difficulty for us is the mobile phone business. As we all know, chips for mobile phone need advanced technology as they are small and have low power consumption. Huawei can design its own chip but no one can manufacture it for us. That’s where we (are) stuck.”

    As a country, China has been hoping to become self-sufficient when it comes to manufacturing chips. This would prevent tech companies in the country from having to worry about having their businesses held hostage. “Technology should be used to give full play to its value. It is imperative to combine 5G with artificial intelligence, cloud and enterprise application scenarios to unleash the potential of Internet of Everything and Intelligence of Everything,” said Guo.

    “Huawei phones have a lot of unique technologies of their own. We are looking forward to the day when the core problem of chip manufacture will be completely solved in China,” Huawei’s current chairman states. Huawei’s Chairman is also thinking ahead about 6G. He sees 5G becoming the universal global network that most people envision it becoming. But as for 6G Guo, sees the next generation of wireless connectivity being used as a regional network for industrial use.

    Huawei lands 4G licensing deal for Volkswagen cars

    Huawei announced it has reached a license agreement with a supplier of Volkswagen Group. The agreement includes a license under Huawei’s 4G standard-essential patents (SEPs), which covers Volkswagen vehicles equipped with wireless connectivity. This agreement marks Huawei’s largest licensing deal in the automotive industry.

    Song Liuping, Chief Legal Officer of Huawei, says: “As an innovative company, we own a leading patent portfolio for wireless technologies, which creates great value for the automotive industry. We are pleased that key players from the automotive industry recognize that value. We believe this license will benefit worldwide consumers with our advanced technology.”

    Huawei expects more than 30 million vehicles to be licensed under its patents based on existing license agreements.

    Over the past 20 years, Huawei has entered into more than 100 patent license agreements with major global companies across Europe, the United States, Japan, and South Korea. Huawei will continue to bring digital connectivity to more vehicles globally to establish a fully connected, intelligent world.

    Huawei CFO’s Lawyers Refute U.S. Claims with HSBC Document

    Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou’s lawyers claim that HSBC’s internal documents contradict U.S. claims that could result in extradition from Canada.

    HSBC’s own records reflected Huawei’s continued control over dealings with Iran-linked Skycom, Meng Wanzhou’s lawyers told a British Columbia court, including control over its accounts held at the British lender.

    According to Meng’s lawyer Mark Sandler, HSBC had conducted risk assessments with full knowledge of Huawei’s relationship with Skycom, adding that the latter’s financial statements were even included in a report on the Huawei account to the bank’s head office.

    We’re now in a different universe, Sandler said at the hearing yesterday. There is no plausible case for committal.

    Meng is approaching the final round of extradition hearings scheduled for August.

    If admitted by the court, the HSBC documents which were obtained in a deal overseen by a Hong Kong court in April will be usable for the hearing.

    Acting on behalf of the U.S. in the case, lawyers for the Attorney General of Canada have yet to respond to the submissions.

    Huawei to reportedly build its own chipsets in Wuhan starting next year

    In May 2019, the U.S., claiming security issues, placed Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei on the entity list. As a result, Huawei was no longer able to access the U.S. supply chain that it had spent over $18 billion on during the previous year, and was even banned from using software developed by Google. Exactly one year later, the U.S. Commerce Department made a change in export rules preventing foundries using American technology from shipping cutting-edge chips to Huawei without a license.

    Since the U.S. export rule change prevented Huawei’s contract foundry TSMC from shipping to the Chinese manufacturer the powerful 5nm Kirin chips that Huawei had designed itself, there had been talk about Huawei manufacturing its own chipsets. Like most major consumer electronics firms including Apple, Huawei farms out its chip designs to contract foundries like TSMC and the latter builds the actual chips using its fabs.

    Prior to the U.S. ban on chip deliveries to Huawei, the latter was TSMC’s second-largest customer behind Apple. Since being placed on the entity list, Huawei has learned to make its own software and hardware to replace parts of the supply chain it can no longer obtain such as the Google licensed version of Android (replaced by Huawei’s HarmonyOS, and Huawei Mobile Services).

    Industry sources are calling for Huawei to turn on the “start” button for its own wafer fab in Wuhan. Production is expected to start in phases beginning in 2022. Huawei’s HiSilicon unit certainly has the capability to design high-powered chips like the 5nm Kirin 9000. Wafers, made from silicon, go through several processes before getting sliced up and packaged to become individual chipsets.

    Huawei has opened its 7th and largest Global Cyber Security and Privacy Protection Transparency Center in Dongguan, China, with representatives from GSMA, SUSE, the British Standards Institution, and regulators from the UAE and Indonesia speaking at the opening ceremony. During the opening ceremony, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, head of cybersecurity, UAE, delivered a keynote on the importance of cyber cooperation for a resilient and vibrant digital future.

    Along with the opening of the new center, Huawei also released its Product Cyber Security Baseline, marking the first time the company has made its product security baseline framework and management practices available to the industry as a whole. These actions are part of the company’s broader efforts to engage with customers, suppliers, standards organizations, and other stakeholders to jointly strengthen cybersecurity across the industry.

    “Cybersecurity is more important than ever,” said Ken Hu, Huawei’s rotating chairman, at the opening of the Dongguan center. “As an industry, we need to work together, share best practices, and build our collective capabilities in governance, standards, technology, and verification. We need to give both the general public and regulators a reason to trust in the security of the products and services they use on a daily basis. Together, we can strike the right balance between security and development in an increasingly digital world.”

    Over the past few years, industry digitalization and new technologies like 5G and AI have made cyberspace more complex than ever, compounded by the fact that people have been spending a greater portion of their lives online throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. These trends have led to a rise in new cybersecurity risks.

    During his speech, Hu also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity and shared responsibility to Huawei. Huawei has been committed to cooperative cybersecurity as early as 2000. There are now more than 3,000 cybersecurity R&D personnel in Huawei. Moreover, Huawei’s annual R&D investment in cybersecurity and privacy protection accounts for about 5% of its total R&D expenses.

    Huawei opened the new Global Cyber Security and Privacy Protection Transparency Center in Dongguan to address these issues, providing a platform for industry stakeholders to share expertise in cyber governance and work on technical solutions together. The center is designed to demonstrate solutions and share experience, facilitate communication and joint innovation, and support security testing and verification. It will be open to regulators, independent third-party testing organizations, and standards organizations, as well as Huawei customers, partners, and suppliers.

    H.E. Dr. Mohamed Hamad Al Kuwaiti, head of cybersecurity, UAE, said, “A public-private partnership will be critical to build collaboration among private, public and government entities so as to establish a globally trusted digital oasis in the UAE.”

    To further a unified approach to cybersecurity in the telecoms industry, organizations like GSMA and 3GPP have also been working with industry stakeholders to promote NESAS Security Assurance Specifications and independent certifications. These baselines have seen wide acceptance in the industry, and will play an important role in the development and verification of secure networks.

    Mats Granryd, director general of GSMA, spoke at the opening of Huawei’s new center. “The delivery of existing and new services in the 5G era will rely heavily on the connectivity provided by mobile networks and will fundamentally depend on the underlying technology being secure and trusted,” he said. “Initiatives such as the GSMA 5G Cybersecurity Knowledge Base, designed to help stakeholders understand and mitigate network risks, and NESAS, an industry-wide security assurance framework, are designed to facilitate improvements in network equipment security levels across the sector.”

    Hu also highlighted the importance of knowledge sharing. At the event, Huawei also released its Product Cyber Security Baseline, the culmination of over a decade of experience in product security management, incorporating a broad range of external regulations, technical standards, and regulatory requirements. The Baseline, together with Huawei’s other governance mechanisms, helps ensure the quality, security, and trustworthiness of the company’s products. Over the years, Huawei has built over 1,500 networks that connect more than three billion people across 170 countries and regions. None of these networks have ever experienced a major security incident.

    Hu emphasized that the more knowledge and best practices we share, the more effectively we can strengthen cybersecurity as a community.

    According to Huawei, the baseline covers 15 categories, 54 requirements, and 112 specific implementation instructions and interpretations, ensuring the high-quality, security, and trustworthiness of Huawei products. It includes 4 categories of legal compliance requirements (prevention of backdoors, prevention of malware and malicious behaviors, protection of user privacy and protection of communication freedom) and 11 categories of security and functional assurance requirements (including secure coding, compilation, sensitive data protection, encryption, secure boot, integrity protection, and lifecycle management).

    “This is the first time we’ve shared our security baseline framework with the entire industry, not just core suppliers,” said Sean Yang, director of Huawei’s Global Cyber Security and Privacy Protection Office. “We want to invite all stakeholders, including customers, regulators, standards organizations, technology providers, and testing organizations, to join us in discussing and working on cybersecurity baselines. Together, we can continuously improve product security across the industry.”

    At present, the industry still lacks a standards-based, coordinated approach, especially when it comes to governance, technical capabilities, certification, and collaboration.

    “Cybersecurity risk is a shared responsibility,” concluded Ken Hu in his opening remarks. “Governments, standards organizations, and technology providers need to work closely together to develop a unified understanding of cybersecurity challenges. This must be an international effort. We need to set shared goals, align responsibilities, and work together to build a trustworthy digital environment that meets the challenges of today and tomorrow.”

    Two years ago, Huawei opened a similar center in Brussels, with others located in the UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, and the UAE.

    Huawei is eyeing opportunities in digital finance to diversify its revenue mix amid ongoing U.S. sanction pressure against its smartphone and telecom equipment business.

    Huawei is the latest major Chinese player to make an entry into the global digital finance market, eyeing growth opportunities from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa where financial inclusiveness is underdeveloped.

    Intelligent finance itself has a market valued at several hundreds of billions of dollars, but the potential is bigger because there will be cross-sector opportunities,» said Huawei’s global financial services business unit president Jason Cao in a report.

    Digitalized financial services have already penetrated into various commercial fields, and a cross-industry, full-scenario eco-system can be built by us to serve the clients.

    Huawei will look to leverage various capabilities, including facial recognition and big data technology, to develop innovative solutions.

    It recently formed an alliance with 25 partners including software developers, fintech companies, and risk managers to create an ecosystem of digital financial solutions.

    You do not just offer what financial firms demand in the new era, Cao said. The key to staying ahead is developing innovative scenario-based solutions.

    Huawei will look to be less reliant on its smartphone and telecom equipment business amid ongoing pressure from U.S. sanctions such as export controls to cut access to high-end chip suppliers.

    In addition, Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer and daughter of founder Ren Zheng Fei, is currently in a legal battle to fight extradition to the U.S. over accusations that she deceived HSBC to bypass sanctions against Iran.

    Meng’s lawyers are scheduled this month to convince a Canada-based judge to allow them to rely on newly discovered evidence that supposedly proves that HSBC was aware of the sanctions risks. The evidence is believed to be sourced from documents in a recent agreement between Meng, Huawei and HSBC which resulted from a court ruling in Hong Kong.

    Chinese tech giant Huawei said it would launch a long-awaited new operating system for smartphones next week, part of an all-out push into the software industry aimed at weathering US sanctions and taking on Google’s Android.

    Huawei tipped the June 2 launch of its HarmonyOS platform in a short teaser on social media, just as an internal memo came to light in which company founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei outlined plans to go big in software.

    The 76-year-old assured staff that “in the software domain, the US will have very little control over our future development, and we have much autonomy.” Huawei’s founder and CEO emphasized that “objectively speaking, the only domain in which we can extend our roots deep is software”

    Huawei’s plans are the latest signs of a radical transformation at the Shenzhen-based company, which is moving quickly into new product lines seen as less vulnerable to US pressure and a re-focus on its core domestic market.

    Huawei had already announced in April that it would work with Chinese automakers to develop intelligent vehicles after earlier unveiling moves into enterprise and cloud computing.

    Saying “the best defense is a good offense”, Ren outlined an ambitious plan to develop software that “embraces the world”.

    An agreement between Huawei and HSBC in Hong Kong has led Canadian courts to delay chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou’s extradition hearing.

    Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was handed a three-month delay for her U.S. extradition hearing, according to a court ruling, which was scheduled to conclude in May.

    Defense attorney Richard Peck had requested «a modest frame of time» to read newly obtained documents and potentially file them as evidence.

    Peck and the defense team were referring to a breakthrough agreement made between Meng, Huawei, and HSBC in Hong Kong courts earlier this month for «documents production».

    According to a statement from the bank, it agreed to «resolve the legal proceedings in Hong Kong regarding their request for documents».

    Defense lawyers claimed that the documents would prove that HSBC was not misled into business dealings with Iran, causing it to break U.S. sanctions.

    On the eve of Auto Shanghai 2021, Huawei launched its next-generation intelligent components and solutions, including the 4D imaging radar, AR-HUD, and MDC 810 during its Huawei Inside (HI) product launch titled “Focused Innovation for Intelligent Vehicles”. These products are designed to help OEMs build advanced intelligent vehicles and enable the Chinese automotive industry to upgrade their technology and become a pioneer of new energy and autonomous driving.

    In October 2020, Huawei launched the HI brand. As a digital car-oriented provider of new components, Huawei has closely worked with OEMs to build premium intelligent vehicles under the innovative “Huawei Inside” initiative, which includes a brand-new digital architecture for intelligent vehicles, five intelligent solutions (Intelligent Driving, Intelligent Cockpit, mPower, Intelligent Connectivity, and Intelligent Vehicle Cloud), and over 30 intelligent components.

    Intelligent cockpit delivers an upgraded driving experience

    The Huawei Intelligent Cockpit Solution adopts the self-developed computing platform and HarmonyOS (cockpit), featuring an extensive application, software, and hardware ecosystem that provides users with desired services and functions through open collaboration with OEMs, tier-1 vendors, and app partners. Huawei has developed cutting-edge technologies for the intelligent cockpit, to continuously enhance user experience. For example, the Kirin head unit (HU) modules feature an independent Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that performs complex device processing; the Cockpit Vision smart screen can restore color and enable smooth touch, delivering a pleasurable driving experience to users; the AR-HUD is more compact in size, able to provide a larger field of view and HD display.

    Based on its years of experience in the field of optical technology and its leading futuristic technology, Huawei has rolled out a high-performance AR-HUD. The 10 L AR-HUD can transform an ordinary windshield into a 70-inch HD screen and intelligently adjust the projection area by tracking users’ eye movements. It can display a viewing angle of 13° x 5°, allowing users to view detailed information on the windshield. Its powerful visual identification and AI capabilities deliver an immersive visual experience and driving assistance.

    High-resolution 4D imaging radar enables advanced autonomous driving

    Huawei’s high-resolution 4D imaging radar uses a 12T24R large antenna array (12 transmit channels and 24 receive channels), which offers a 24-fold improvement over the antenna configuration of a conventional mmWave radar (3T4R) and 50% more receive channels than industry imaging radars, making it an imaging radar with the largest antenna array available for mass production.

    The 4D imaging radar delivers a unique non-line-of-sight (NLOS) sensing strength that helps detect hidden objects while maintaining superior distance and velocity measurement capabilities of the traditional mmWave radar, allowing it to perform functionally regardless of ambient lighting and bad weather. On top of that, Huawei’s 4D imaging radar has a high resolution and is capable of confidently detecting objects with a larger detection range. It can produce a point cloud density on par with lidars, enabling abundant radar applications such as environment reconstruction, mapping, and localization. By converging point clouds of multiple radars, vehicles can enjoy a 360° surround view, thereby implementing full-coverage sensing of all objects in different scenarios under all weather conditions.

    Currently, the intelligent driving industry is gaining momentum, racing towards mass production. Huawei is dedicated to building an open and standardized MDC. Based on its solid experience and achievements in hardware, software, and security engineering, Huawei has built the most powerful computing platform for intelligent driving — MDC — accelerating the mass production of intelligent vehicles.

    The MDC 810 launched during Auto Shanghai 2021 is a mass-produced intelligent driving computing platform with the industry’s highest computing power. It provides dense computing power of up to 400 TOPS in compliance with the ASIL-D safety requirements. Equipped with the MDC Core (including the intelligent driving operating systems AOS and VOS) and a complete toolchain, the MDC 810 can enable high-level autonomous driving functions such as Traffic Jam Pilot (TJP), Highway Pilot (HWP), and Auto Valet Parking (AVP). The ARCFOX Alpha S sedan will be the first vehicle to feature HUAWEI MDC 810, and more vehicle models will be powered by HUAWEI MDC series in the near future.

    HUAWEI MDC is an open, standardized platform aiming to boost the growth of the intelligent driving industry. Huawei has been working closely with vendors of sensors, actuators, and application algorithms to build such technology ecosystems based on the MDC. Through the open computing platform, Huawei unites the efforts of eco-partners to accelerate construction of the intelligent driving ecosystem, stepping into the mass production phase of intelligent vehicles.

    HUAWEI Octopus

    HUAWEI Octopus leverages massive data, HD map, and advanced algorithms to build a data-driven, closed-loop platform for intelligent driving. Relying on its vehicle-cloud synergy, industry-leading annotation capacity, upgraded virtual simulation, and one-stop secure, compliant cloud services, HUAWEI Octopus is designed to help OEMs build autonomous driving development capabilities from scratch, lower development requirements, and improve development efficiency.

    Cloud is the only bridge between autonomous driving development and its commercialization. Vehicles in all regions must be connected to the local cloud to help resolve the coverage, security, and scalability issues that come with commercializing autonomous driving. By migrating data to cloud, developers no longer need to worry about expanding equipment rooms to accommodate larger volumes of data, allowing them to focus more on core algorithm development.

    HD maps are also a vital element for autonomous driving. In preparation for this, Huawei officially announced its latest HD map cloud service capability and roadmap at the product launch. Currently, Huawei has obtained grade-A surveying and mapping qualification to produce electronic navigation maps and developed comprehensive HD map data collection and mapping capabilities.

    HUAWEI TMS

    By adopting a simplified architecture and centralizing the components as well as control functions, Huawei TMS improves the operating temperature of heat pumps from –10°C to –18°C without compromising on comfort. As a result, the range of new energy vehicles (NEVs) is increased by 20%. In addition, HUAWEI TMS provides personalized applications, helping OEMs build a thermal system with optimal energy efficiency and superior experience.

    As the automobile industry shifts over to electric power, thermal management systems are growing in importance. Currently, most NEVs use the inefficient PTC heating solution, which reduces the range by 30% to 40% at lower temperatures. As a result, the heat pump system that features high energy efficiency (twice that of the PTC) will be the future of thermal management. It is estimated that heat pumps may enjoy a 3x faster penetration rate between 2020 and 2025. However, the conventional heat pump solution faces many challenges, namely, excessive pipes and parts, poor environmental adaptability (not functional below –10°C), and lack of intelligence (manual calibration), adversely affecting the efficiency and application of the heat pump system. After four years of research and development, Huawei has rolled out the most integrated, intelligent thermal management solution for vehicles. Through integrated design as well as centralized components and control functions, HUAWEI TMS has achieved 100% improvement in energy efficiency, 60% improvement in calibration efficiency, and improved user experience.

    Huawei considers intelligent automotive components as its long-term strategic opportunity. The company will continue to channel more investments into this field, particularly into the development of autonomous driving software, to build an advanced autonomous driving system. This year, Huawei will form a team of over 5000 people working in the R&D of intelligent automotive components, and its investment in this field will total US$1 billion. By nurturing high-end talent through R&D centers in Europe, Japan, and China, Huawei aims to strengthen its product competitiveness with a focus on innovation.

    Global leading ICT provider Huawei launched its SME Support Program with trusted ecosystem partners in Asia Pacific, aiming to deliver further technical support for economic recovery amid the fight against the pandemic in the region.

    Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the engines of growth and innovation in the APEC region. They account for over 97 percent of all businesses and employ over half of the workforce across APEC economies. They contribute significantly to economic growth, with their share of GDP ranging from 40 percent to 60 percent in most APEC economies, according to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.

    Having a world-famous camera company supply a phone manufacturer with parts for the photography system on the firm’s handsets is not new. Huawei uses lenses supplied by Leica, and in the latest partnership, OnePlus uses camera parts from Hasselblad. The public might not know that name, but among professionals it is well known and the company has a great reputation.

    Tipster Ice Universe posted an interesting rumor on Weibo the other day that was seconded on Twitter by another (albeit lesser-known) tipster using the handle @heyitsyogesh. Both say that Samsung is in talks with Olympus about supplying Samsung with cameras for future smartphone models. The cameras provided under the rumored partnership will be high quality with Samsung continuing to use its own image signal processors (ISP).

    A tweet sent by @heyitdyogesh mentions that an Olympus camera might end up on a special edition model of the Galaxy Fold. Turning to regular production models, we could see Olympus take over Samsung’s camera module for the first time with next year’s Galaxy S22 flagship series. If tradition holds, we could see that line launch sometime during the first quarter of 2022.

    Samsung is believed to be working on the successor to its current top-of-the-line Exynos chipset which it has codenamed Olympus. Reportedly, the chip will deliver improved performance compared to the Exynos 2100. Do you believe that the use of the Olympus codename is a clue Sammy is giving us or is it just a coincidence?

    Despite the rumors, we would be amiss if we didn’t point out that Olympus sold its camera and imaging business to Japan Industrial Partners last year. That would seem to put the kibosh on the rumors, and so far no partnership has been announced anyway. If it turns out just to be a failed rumor, it isn’t clear anyway whether the use of a high-profile camera brand actually helps to generate smartphone sales.

    Ningbo is a time-honored international port city in east China’s Zhejiang province. Its port, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, is the largest port in the world. Recently, the port worked with China Mobile Ningbo and Huawei to showcase the hybrid platooning of 5G smart and traditional container trucks. The platooning is a stride towards realizing the goal of becoming a world-class port. With this solution, in berth 8 of its busy Meishan container terminal, 13 5G smart container trucks run automatically and smoothly, greatly improving automation and safety in the port.

    Due to the collaboration of Zhejiang Seaport Group, China Mobile Zhejiang, Huawei, and other leading players, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has been transformed into a smart 5G port. To date, the port has reached a number of milestones, becoming the first in the industry to integrate 5G automated rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes into routine operation and implement 5G network slicing and 5G Super Uplink in port businesses.

    Smart container trucks represent a new breakthrough in the smart port transformation. Their scaled application offers an effective solution to driver shortage and fatigue while improving efficiency and reducing safety risks. They will play an important role in replacing intensive labor in the port with unmanned, automated, and intelligent operations.

    Smart container trucks require real-time 5G smart sensing, truck-road and truck-truck synergy, and video transmission. One container truck requires an uplink bandwidth of 20 to 30 Mbps and a low latency of below 20 ms. During peak hours, more than 40 container trucks will be working at the same time. This requires the network to ensure an uplink bandwidth of 1,200 Mbps.

    5G can provide better network support for these applications. Based on 3GPP Release 16, China Mobile and Huawei have developed a 5GtoB solution for port applications. Ample verification tests have been conducted, with results showing that the solution meets the requirements of smart container trucks on both network performance and stability. With CPEs deployed to support dual feeding and selective receiving solution, the network further improves the quality and latency stability of smart container trucks’ signal transmission. As such, 5G has become a preferred network solution for full-function applications of smart container trucks.

    In the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, container trucks no longer have drivers — an important indicator of the automated logistics of 5G smart trucks in modern ports. Powered by 5G and AI, upon detecting that containers unloaded from bridge cranes are properly loaded, container trucks automatically power on to move the containers to their destinations. During this process, they automatically identify nearby objects, machinery, and lighthouses and respond intelligently, such as decelerating, braking, steering, bypassing, and parking. They can also accurately move to the RTG-specified positions along optimal routes provided by the smart dispatching system, meeting the demand for horizontal transfer in closed areas.

    Looking to the future, the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port will continue to work with China Mobile Ningbo and Huawei as well as other industrial partners to further integrate upstream and downstream resources and promote the pilot and promotion of remote device control, smart tallying, unmanned driving, online AI port monitoring, and trunking communication based on 5G networks so as to build a comprehensive benchmark of 5G smart port.

    In May 2019, the U.S. placed Huawei on the Entity List. Not only did this ban Huawei from accessing its U.S. supply chain, it also banned Huawei from using Google’s Android apps on Huawei handsets. Not that this really mattered since many of these apps such as YouTube, Search, Google Maps, Drive, and others were already banned from the Chinese versions of Huawei’s phones by the government. Google’s apps were allowed on the international versions of Huawei’s phones.

    Huawei’s Entity List placement means that Google Mobile Services is not allowed on Huawei handsets and had to be replaced. Huawei developed its own ecosystem called Huawei Mobile Service (HMS). As of last December, HMS covered 500 million monthly active users in over 170 countries; the buzz around the water cooler is that a non-Huawei handset will soon be available with HMS pre-installed (more on this below).

    Huawei also had to replace the Google-licensed version of Android with the open-source version of Android and will now switch to its homegrown HarmonyOS. The company’s first 2021 flagship, the camera-centric Huawei P50 series, could be the first smartphones to run HarmonyOS. According to Huawei staff member Akiba Ziluo, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Meizu will have the first non-Huawei handset to support HMS Core through the Huawei Mobile Service. According to Huawei, “HMS Core offers a rich array of open device and cloud capabilities, which facilitate efficient development, fast growth, and flexible monetization. This enables global developers to pursue groundbreaking innovation, deliver next-level user experiences, and make premium content and services broadly accessible.”

    Each Chinese phone manufacturer has a secret fear; they worry about becoming the next Huawei and ending up in a similar predicament. That is why many of them are looking for Chinese technology that could be used in a jiff to replace American software in case they are banned from using U.S. technology like Huawei is.

    After being rejected in the U.K., Huawei lawyers seek to make a similar push to pressure HSBC to unveil documents they claim will disprove accusations of fraud against chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou.

    After a 30-minute hearing at Hong Kong High Court, no ruling was deliberated on whether or not HSBC must provide specific documents related to accusations that Meng misled the British lender about business dealings with Iran during a 2013 meeting.

    If proven true, this could help prevent the Huawei CFO and daughter of founder Ren Zhengfei from being extradited to the U.S. to face trial.

    The information that Meng is seeking will «go to the heart of her ability to demonstrate that there were material omissions and misstatements» made in the attempt to extradite her to the U.S., according to a report citing a Huawei spokesperson, and that she has no other means to obtain them other than through court approval.

    The legal pressure against HSBC to disclose the allegedly revealing documents follow similar attempts made in the U.K. by Huawei lawyers which were rejected by a high court judge.

    Another one-day hearing for the case in Hong Kong is scheduled for April 12.

    In his opening remarks, Brandon Wu, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Huawei’s Asia Pacific Enterprise Business Unit, emphasized the need to ensure enhanced resiliency across all industries, given the impact of the global pandemic.

    Wu explored the key trends emerging in edge computing, namely: better-connected infrastructure, increased resiliency through the use of edge computing, and enhanced reliability through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

    According to the estimation by Gartner, within four years, 75% of data generated by enterprises will be processed at the edge. Demand for real-time interaction is driving businesses to bring computing power closer to end-users.

    • Small and edge data center are therefore making an appearance in several industries and scenarios:Retail: Small and edge data centers can exist within retail outlets as retailers close the gap between online and offline sales.
    • Manufacturing: Edge data centers deployed in distribution warehouses are capable of managing growing volumes of inventory and shipping data; in factories, such data centers manage data generated from sensors as well as communications between equipment, contributing to a growing IIoT.
    • Telecoms: Central offices of telco companies are being converted to computing rooms and used as edge data centers to make networks more dynamic.

    Mahesh Choudhary, Solution Architect for the Huawei Digital Power Line, launched the new solution directly from the Huawei Digital Power Innovation Experience Center, offering a real-life demonstration for event attendees. Changing the game with SmartLi inside —Huawei’s smart lithium battery Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) —now any room can be made into a data center.

    With far lower requirements placed on ceiling height, the Huawei Modular Data Center Solution has no need for a traditional raised floor design. Instead, air conditioner pipes and strong-and weak-current cables are routed from top-down, meaning that equipment can be accommodated in ceiling heights as low as 2.6 m, far below the 3 m minimum height required for a traditional data center.

    At the Smart Modular Data Center Product Launch, Huawei’s partner — NetCraft Information Technology (Macau) Co., Ltd. — shared its experiences cooperating with Huawei. Benjiman Wong, the company’s Sales Director, said: “With the Huawei Modular Data Center Solution, all required components are modular. An easy way for customers to understand this solution is to consider that each component is like a building block: you can build up your castle by adding different blocks together, so you can add more blocks in the future when needed.”
