Lazada Philippines customers can now buy goods online and pay by installments.

Called eShopaLoan, the service targets the increasing population of middle-class Filipino shoppers offering monthly installment options for purchases made via Lazada’s platform.

Consumer loans range from PHP4000 to PHP20,000 (US$77 to $384) over a six-month period. EshopaLoan finances products within the PHP 5000 to PHP 50,000 price range. To apply for eShopaLoan service, Lazada customers can install the AsiaKredit pera247 app and fill out the application.

“Our partnership with Lazada Philippines marks the beginning of many exciting and transformative retail partnerships we hope to embark on to improve access to finance for millions of underbanked Filipinos left out of the traditional financial system,” said Michael Singh, CEO and co-founder at AsiaKredit.

Headquartered in Singapore, AsiaKredit currently operates in the Philippines, with plans to enter other Southeast Asian markets. AsiaKredit provides advanced installment-based finance products through a mobile app to Southeast Asia’s half a billion unbanked people.

“Alibaba had a great quarter, expanding our user base to 674 million annual active consumers, demonstrating our superior user experience,” said Daniel Zhang, CEO.

“We will continue to expand our customer base, increase operating efficiency and deliver robust growth. With strong cash flow from our core commerce business, we will continue to invest in technology and bring digital transformation to millions of businesses globally,” he said.

CFO Maggie Wu said the company was pleased to see sustained user engagement and consumer spending across its platforms. “We continue to invest for long-term growth while at the same time gaining cost efficiencies in our investment areas,” she said.

The group reported net income attributable to shareholders of RMB21.252 billion (US$3.096 billion), on total revenue of RMB114.924 billion (US$16.741 billion). The annual active consumers on the group’s Mainland China retail marketplaces reached 674 million in the year to June 30.

The company said its Taobao marketplace was the fast-growing consumer community, adding users and strengthening engagement in less-developed areas of the mainland. “The increase in annual active consumers reflects strong user acquisition programs, such as referrals through the Alipay app and another record-breaking 6.18 Mid-Year Shopping Festival, which deepened our penetration into less-developed areas,” the company said.

“During the quarter, more than 70 per cent of the increase in annual active consumers was from less-developed areas, demonstrating the success of our initiatives to cater to a broader base of users, such as using simpler interfaces for first-time or less-frequent users.”

Sales on grew at 34 per cent year on year, driven by increases in the number of users and their average spend, reflecting strength in fast-moving consumer goods, apparel, consumer electronics and home furnishings.

Alibaba’s self-owned-and-operated grocery-retail chain Freshippo (Hema) continued to achieve robust same-store sales growth, expand its footprint, optimising its stores and introducing new initiatives to improve the customer experience, the company said. As at June 30, there were 150 self-operated Freshippo stores in 17 mainland cities.

The group’s international business also showed growth, especially in Southeast Asia where Lazada showed “solid operational improvement” after strengthening its third-party marketplace business, management team and technology infrastructure. • Grab now has more rivals than ever before in Vietnam

Grab now has more rivals than ever before in Vietnam

From an e-hailing app, Grab has made great steps forward, providing many different services. Most recently, it started the payment service GrabPay and lending service Grab Financial. The consumer lending market in South East Asia is very large. As estimated by the World Bank, about 2 billion people in the world cannot access bank services, and most of them are in Asia Pacific.

The non-cash payment market, according to Grab, is worth $500 billion in South East Asia. An analyst commented that Grab is wise taking a ‘roundabout’ approach to consumer lending (it conquered the transport market first before aiming for the consumer credit market).

Consumer lending is a fertile business field for Chinese e-commerce firms. The firms offer online payment apps to users to ‘learn’ about their financial capability.

Grab, as an app, quickly attracted users, especially investors. Just within six years, Grab became an unicorn company, i.e. an unlisted technology firm with valuation of $1 billion and higher, in South East Asia. Analysts estimate that Grab is valued at $6 billion.

    The challenges

The total number of Grab downloads has reached 95 million all over South East Asia. This could serve as the launch pad for it to conquer the consumer lending market.

“GrabPay e-wallet will be used for both transport and food delivery services, two of the most used services in South East Asia,” said Jerry Lim, director of Grab Vietnam.

However, the analyst said, by expanding its business, Grab would have to compete with more rivals who are ‘powers’ in their fields. In online payment, for example, it will have to compete not only with AirPay (Sea) and Alipay (Alibaba Group), but also with local firms such as ZaloPay (VNG) and MoMo.

In Indonesia, Grab bought an e-commerce platform, Kudo, in April 2017. Grab believes that this is the factor which can help expand GrabPay. However, in Vietnam, Grab’s two big rivals – Sea and Alibaba — both have strong support from two popular e-commerce floors – Shopee Vietnam and Lazada Vietnam.

Similarly, GrabFood has rivals in the food delivery sector, where Sea’s Now, which inherited the large custom from Foody, is the leader.
