  • Luk Fook Plans to Expand in China to maintain growth

Luk Fook Plans to Expand in China to maintain growth

Luk Fook will add at least 150 stores in Mainland China this year as it looks to mitigate falling sales in Hong Kong.

Releasing its results for the financial year to March 31, Luk Fook said profit attributable to shareholders rose 9 percent to HK$1.5 billion on sales up 8.8 percent to $15.9 billion.

During the year the company added 194 stores on the mainland taking its global network to 1833.

“As Mainland China remains to be a market with promising growth potential in the mid- to long-term, the group will continue to focus on business expansion [there],” said Luk Fook chairman and CEO Wai Sheung Wong.

“The target for net addition of shops in Mainland China in the coming year, including newly developed brands, is not less than 150 shops and will expand its network to lower-tier cities by opening mainly licensed shops. The group is also committed to further developing its e-commerce business and strengthening cooperation with e-commerce platforms in Mainland China, aiming to grow e-commerce revenue by 20 per cent,” he said.

“In light of the enormous spending potential of young consumers on online sales platforms, the group will step up its efforts to promote the sales of affordable luxury jewelry products to expand its footprint in the young consumer market.”

Last year was one of two differing halves for Luk Fook, the first half of growing sales in Hong Kong and Macau, the second of declining sales as trade tensions grew between China and the US and consumer sentiment dived. That trend continued from April through to three weeks into this month with same-store sales in Hong Kong and Macau down by the low-double digits and on the mainland by the mid-single digits for company-owned stores and low-single digits for licensed shops.

Given the continuing uncertainties on the macro-economic environment arising from the US-China trade war, Luk Fook expects “flattish” revenue and profit growth for the current financial year but hopes to maintain profitability at last year’s level.

Last year, the retail business was Luk Fook’s main source of revenue, rising by 9.8 percent

Year on year to $12.075 billion and accounting for 76.1 percent of total sales.

The group’s retail revenue in the Hong Kong market increased by 11.6 percent to $7.44 billion, despite a lackluster second half.

Visa and LINE pay to partner on next-generation fintech solutions

Visa (NYSE: V), the global payments leader, and LINE Pay Corporation, operator of digital wallet and fintech services on the LINE messaging app, today announced a strategic partnership that will see them create new financial services experiences for their collective user bases of millions of consumers and merchants worldwide[1].

The two companies will collaborate across multiple areas, including:

    • Everyday consumer payments: LINE’s 187 million global monthly active users will be able to apply for a digital Visa card from within the LINE app, and over time, add any of their existing Visa cards to make seamless payments from their mobile phone.  The companies will also offer consumers additional and enhanced experiences like integrated loyalty programs and tailored offers and new payment capabilities for users when they travel overseas.
    • Solutions for merchants: Through Visa, LINE Pay consumers will be able to use LINE Pay branded capabilities at Visa’s 54 million merchant locations worldwide, enabling them to take advantage of LINE Pay offers and services. They will also be able to see these transactions in their LINE Pay digital wallet, even where LINE Pay is not directly accepted. In addition, Visa and LINE Pay will collaborate on ways for merchants to interact with the LINE Pay service as well as LINE Pay digital wallet, supporting the continued growth of globally interoperable payments.
    • Fintech services: LINE Pay and Visa will develop new experiences based on blockchain that enable B2B and cross-border payments and alternative currency transactions.
    • Marketing: Ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Visa and LINE Pay will partner on exclusive marketing campaigns and promotions to contribute to Japan’s acceleration towards a cashless society in the lead-up to and after the Olympic Games.

Messaging apps are a fast-growing frontier in digital commerce, as consumers look for more of their everyday tasks, like payments, to be integrated with the apps where they’re spending more of their time. As consumer preferences shift further towards a single app from which they can do everything – transfer money, make an online purchase, pay bills, book travel, and order food – LINE Pay and Visa’s partnership will make that seamless experience a reality for millions of users while ensuring LINE Pay and Visa further drive the expansion of globally interoperable, open-loop payments.

This new partnership extends the existing relationship between Visa and LINE Pay, which includes co-branded LINE Pay Visa cards in Taiwan and to be launched later this year in Japan.

“The Visa co-brand program that currently serves 2.3 million customers in Taiwan is one of Visa’s fastest-growing programs globally,” said Chris Clark, Regional President, Asia Pacific, Visa.  “We are excited to extend this momentum to a range of new solutions in more markets around the world.  As the LINE Pay team continue to enhance the utility of the LINE messaging application for consumers’ everyday lives, we are impressed by the potential of LINE’s distribution power and consumer loyalty to further drive the growth of the global, open-loop payments ecosystem to benefit all players on our network – consumers, merchants, and issuing and acquiring banks.”

“LINE Pay is more than just a payment method. As we transition to a cashless society, LINE Pay is focused on delivering added value to LINE’s users around the world and business partners,” said Youngsu Ko, CEO of LINE Pay and LINE’s Fintech Company. “With Visa’s global network and infrastructure, LINE Pay users will be able to enjoy the advantages of that innovative, worldwide network.”

As payments move away from traditional plastic cards into smartphones, connected devices, and other digital formats, Visa is working with its partners around the world to enable new consumer experiences that are based on digital cards and extending its network to collaborate with new players. This includes the Visa fintech fast-track program, which makes it quicker and easier to build and deliver new commerce experiences on Visa’s payments network.

  • Vietnam’s four major transport projects on track for completion next year

Vietnam’s four major transport projects on track for completion next year

Vietnam is set to complete four infrastructure projects next year, some of them after long delays lasting several years.

    Hanoi’s first metro line

The 13-kilometer Cat Linh – Ha Dong metro line is expected to open commercial operations before the Tet Lunar New Year holiday starting February 2, 2019.

All 13 trains on the route are being trial run every day now, running from Cat Linh Station in downtown Dong Da District to the Yen Nghia Station in the south-west Ha Dong District. The 13-kilometer Cat Linh – Ha Dong metro line is expected to open commercial operations before the Tet Lunar New Year holiday starting February 2, 2019.

Each train has four coaches, with a total capacity of 1,000 passengers. The stainless steel coaches are approximately 19 meters long. The trains now run at 30-35 kilometers an hour, even though they are designed to reach speeds of 65 kilometers an hour. A complete trip takes about 30 minutes.

Work on the project is 96 percent complete, officials say, adding that the terminals and depots are “83 percent equipped.”

Construction of the Cat Linh-Ha Dong elevated railway started in October 2011 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2013. But several hurdles, including loan disbursement issues with China that were only resolved last December, have been stalling the project for years.

The original cost estimate of $552.86 million has also ballooned to more than $868 million, including $670 million in loans from China.

Bac Giang – Lang Son expressway

The expressway connecting Bac Giang Province north-east of Hanoi to the northern Lang Son Province bordering China is expected to be completed next December.

The four-lane expressway runs 64 kilometers. A 110-kilometer stretch of the existing National Route 1A connecting the two provinces will also be upgraded to be part of the expressway.

The total project cost has been estimated at VND12.19 trillion ($523.67 million).

Most of the expressway has been completed. Next year, operators will finish laying asphalt and installing road signs and lights.

Work on the expressway started in October 2015 and was scheduled for completion last year. However, the  Ministry of Transport had to select a new investor for the project after the original one was found wanting.

The Bac Giang – Lang Son expressway is part of the Hanoi – Lang Son expressway, connecting the capital with the Huu Nghi International Border Gate in Lang Son Province.

    Cu Mong Tunnels

The Cu Mong Pass, lies mostly in Binh Dinh and partly in Phu Yen, is one of the most dangerous passes in Vietnam. The new tunnels are expected to reduce the number of dangerous traffic accidents that the pass has become infamous for. They would also reduce travel time between the two provinces. The Cu Mong tunnels, connecting the southern provinces of Binh Dinh and Phu Yen, are expected to open on January 21, allowing all vehicles to go through free of charge during the February 2-10 Tet holiday.

The two tunnels are 2.6 kilometers long and 30 meters apart and have a 4-kilometer lead-in road. The tunnels allow a maximum speed of 80 kilometers an hour. For an unspecified first period, only one tunnel will be operated. For now, the second one will be reserved for use in emergencies.

The tunnels have a total capital of almost VND4 trillion ($171.82 million). Construction started in September 2015.

Vam Cong Bridge in the Mekong Delta Region

This is the second bridge over the Hau River after the Can Tho Bridge, which is 48 kilometers away. It is part of the route connecting Can Tho with An Giang Province, built to boost the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region. The bridge, which connects the southern province of Dong Thap with Can Tho City, is expected to be operational by next July.

The bridge was supposed to be completed by November 2017, but authorities found out that a horizonal beam had a crack four centimeters wide and two meters long.

The Ministry of Transport ordered repairs, and so far 26 out of 38 steps for this process has been completed.

The bridge’s budget of $270 million was sourced through official development assistance from South Korea and Vietnam’s counterpart funds.

  • Nokia launches Fixed Access Health Index

Nokia launches Fixed Access Health Index

Nokia has announced it has developed a new metric for measuring the quality and performance of fixed access networks in a standardized way.

The Nokia Fixed Access Health Index for service providers uses Nokia’s automation and analytics capabilities to benchmark the performance and health of fixed line networks against those of industry peers.

It is designed to act as the foundation for network optimization programs, and measure their performance and progress over time through regular performance measurements.

The index is already in use by multiple operators, including a major Asian service provider that used the tool to optimize the network health and quality of its recently introduced IPTV service.

“The initial results we saw with our pioneering customers in this domain were so impressive that we decided to go for a ‘standardized’ approach, which can be replicated with other service providers,” Nokia president of fixed networks Federico Guillén said.

“Based on a series of playbooks, each operator gets a personalized evaluation and improvement plan. To offer this kind of service, we build on our expertise in all 20 of the largest access networks globally, and with more than 300 fixed broadband customers worldwide, which gives us an endless source of knowledge to tap.”
