  • Google confirms Samsung’s Galaxy A35 key specs and design

Google confirms Samsung’s Galaxy A35 key specs and design

Samsung is gearing up to launch at least two mid-range handsets, the Galaxy A35 and A55. Information about both devices leaked in the least few months, but nothing official has been confirmed to this date.

Despite the fact that all the sources that leaked information about both Galaxy A35 and A55 are reliable, it’s always nice to have something confirmed before these devices become official.

This time around it’s Google, not Samsung, that’s revealing some of the Galaxy A35’s key specs. Thanks to a Google Play Console listing, we now know for certain that the Galaxy A35 will be powered by Samsung’s Exynos 1380 processor, the same packed inside the newly released Galaxy Tab Active5 rugged tablet.

The listing also confirms that the upcoming phone will pack 6GB RAM and a display with a 2340 x 1080 pixels resolution (450 DPI). Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy A35 will run on Android 14, although the One UI version isn’t mentioned in the listing.

A picture of the phone is attached to the Google Play Console listing, once again confirming the new design change that Samsung calls “Key Island.” The Galaxy A35 features a flat design, an Infinity-O display and rounded camera cutouts.

The unannounced Galaxy A35 has already popped up on the NBTC and Indian BIS certification websites, which suggests that Samsung is about to make this official. The Galaxy A55 is likely to be announced around the same time, although this is just a guess.

  • C-segment car sales slump

    C-segment car sales slump

In the first half of the year 6,787 C-segment sedans, as medium-sized passenger cars are categorized, were sold, a year-on-year decrease of 59.5%.

The Mazda3 and Kia K3 assembled and distributed by Thaco accounted for 3,983 of them. The former was the bestseller, replacing the K3, which topped last year with sales of 7,439.

Two Japanese models imported from Thailand, the Toyota Altis and Honda Civic, the highest priced in the segment, had the lowest combined sales of 1,057 units.

Unlike in the A- and B-segments, few new models have been launched in the C-segment.

The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association said its members sold 404,635 vehicles in 2022, up 33% from the previous year, with Toyota having the biggest market share of 25.4%.

  • Google News smartphone app gets limited Material You makeover

Google News smartphone app gets limited Material You makeover

Google’s Material You design language has been used to update several Google apps including some very popular ones such as Google Maps, Gmail, and Google Photos. Now the Material You look is coming to the Google News smartphone app. The changes include a pill-shaped indicator highlighting the tab you selected at the page’s bottom. The dynamic theming feature, which changes the color of the app’s interface to match the dominant color of the wallpaper being used on an Android device, is not working yet as the app defaults to a blue color for accents.
The tablet version of the Google News app has already been through the Material You makeover which added a navigation rail on the left-hand side with buttons for Headlines, Newsstand, Following, and For You. The same blue pill used to highlight the selected tab being viewed on the smartphone version is used to highlight the selected tab on the navigation rail.
Remember that the Material You additions to the smartphone version of the Google News app has yet to be disseminated to everyone. It did hit the Google News app running on my Pixel 6 Pro running QPR3 Beta 3 but if you haven’t received this app version, you will soon.
There is no indication from Google when the rest of the Material You features will be available to the Google News app. The app briefs you on top stories, shows you local news from your area, takes deep dives into stories with multiple perspectives, and even shows you stories based on your interests. If you want the Google News app on your Android phone, you can tap on this link to install it from the Play Store. Apple iPhone users c
  • Google News app on tablets to get a Material You redesign

Google News app on tablets to get a Material You redesign

Material You has been the de facto design language for Android since its unveiling back in 2021. Since then, Google has been hard at work updating all their apps to fit the new design, including those used in tablets, but there was one app that was partly overlooked, Google News.
Back in May, with Google News version 3.53, the Material You design philosophy began to be implemented by making the bottom navigation bar taller, giving it a slight hue, and adding a pill-shaped indicator for whatever tab you’re now viewing. This revamp was still in the early stages at the time, as the Material You features did not yet adhere to the Android theme colors.
However, now with version 5.71, the story begins to change. This version brings that same redesign of the Google News app in tablet view. As before, a navigation rail with Material Design 3 (MD3) components was added, even if only available in landscape orientation.
The new look was documented with screenshots via the Google News Telegram group, as seen below:
In this redesign, the page content is now separated from the header and navigation rail by staying enclosed in its own section with rounded corners on top. The shape of the search bar was also modified slightly, but the navigation rail is visible on tablets and phones if used in landscape orientation.
The navigation rail seems to be a common theme for Google when it comes to implementing Material You. It has already used a similar design in Google TV and Google Drive, and if the trend continues it is sure to make its way into other Google apps as well.
I happen to like the navigation rail, as I believe it makes the design cleaner and less cluttered. The ability to expand it to view more content per category highlights its flexibility and adaptability to any app it may get implemented on.

  • Tesla To Host Second Artificial Intelligence Day In August

Tesla To Host Second Artificial Intelligence Day In August

Tesla Inc top boss Elon Musk said on Tuesday the electric-car maker will host its second artificial intelligence day on Aug. 19, with the company likely to expand on plans to fine-tune its self-driving technology.

“The purpose of AI Day is to convince great AI/software/chip talent to join Tesla,” the billionaire said in a tweet.

The use of AI in self-driven cars has stirred up debate around safety issues, but Musk has often contended that such vehicles are far safer than those driven by humans.

Tesla is developing software for its cars to drive without human intervention or oversight, but its full self-driving (FSD) system currently requires human monitoring and is not intended to work without a driver behind the wheel.

The company held its first AI day in August last year and a Battery Day in September 2020, where it talked about the future of battery technology.

“Tesla AI Day #2 on Aug 19. So many cool updates!,” Musk said in a tweet.

Investors and analysts closely watch tech-focused events where companies dive deeper into their projects and usually provide concrete updates on targets and timelines of rollouts.

  • Facebook fights misinformation with new set of group tools

Facebook fights misinformation with new set of group tools

Meta’s Facebook announced that it has taken another step in trying to prevent misinformation from spreading by launching a new set of tools for group admins. These new features are not only meant to identify false information, but they will also help reduce admin workload and, ultimately, make them more efficient while they manage their groups.

The first and most important new feature introduced this week is the ability through Admin Assist to automatically decline incoming posts that contain false information. Secondly, the “mute” functionality has been further improved and renamed to “suspend,” so admins and moderators can now temporarily suspend group members from posting, commenting, reacting, participating in a group chat, and creating or entering a Room in a group, not just mute them.

To help admins manage their groups much easier, Facebook added a new feature that enables them to automatically approve or decline member requests, based on specific criteria. Also, the Admin Home design has been updated with a new overview page on desktop, a new layout, and an insights summary on mobile.

Furthermore, Facebook announced it has added QR codes support, which will allow admins to download or copy/paste from the Share menu and advertise their groups. When scanned, people will be directed to the group’s About game where they can join or request to join. Also, a new option for admins to send invites via email to invite people to join their groups has been added too.

  • Car imports fall in January

    Car imports fall in January

Vietnam’s auto imports fell by 70 percent last month to 4,524 units, but the industry dismissed it as a normal January phenomenon after a surge in imports in December.

The passenger car segment saw a 53 percent decline to 4,008.

Though down by more than half from December, Thailand remained the largest seller, shipping 2,488 units.

    Indonesia followed with 472 vehicles.

Truck imports plunged by 93.5 percent to 260, almost all of it from China and Thailand.

Auto companies said companies usually import large numbers of vehicles in December to prepare for the New Year and Tet shopping season, and so numbers fall in January before recovering again in February and March.

Imports of car parts and equipment fell by 7.8 percent to $395 million.

South Korea, China and Thailand were the biggest exporters.

  • Cognac sales jump 31 per cent as drinkers go upmarket

Cognac sales jump 31 per cent as drinkers go upmarket

Cognac sales surged by nearly a third last year as American and Chinese drinkers guzzled old vintages, in the latest sign premium drinks makers are putting the pandemic behind them.

Sales of the brandy, produced in the Cognac region of France, rose by almost 31 percent in value to €3.6 billion (US$4.1 billion), industry group BNIC said on Monday.

Volumes were up 16 percent to 223.2 million bottles.

“This growth reflects a real recovery of cognac, as well as new consumption habits,” BNIC said in a statement, noting sales had also risen compared with 2019, before the pandemic struck.

The outlook should remain positive in the coming months for all destinations, BNIC added.

The news comes after France’s champagne industry said last month it expected record sales in 2021, and follows strong results from several spirits companies.

Cognac sales to its largest market, the United States, climbed 11 percent, with 115 million bottles shipped in 2021.

Sales to China, its second-biggest, leapt 56 percent with 34 million bottles shipped, while European sales were up 8 percent to reach 37.1 million bottles.

In late November, spirits group Remy Cointreau raised its full-year profit forecast after a better-than-expected first half, driven by strong demand for its premium cognac in China, the United States, and Europe.

Pernod Ricard, which owns Martell cognac, also pointed to a jump in sales in China.

The 2021 harvest, at 867,312 hectolitres, was within the 10-year average and should support further growth for the sector, BNIC said.

  • BMW Claims Outperforming Mercedes-Benz In Sales For The First Time In Six Years

BMW Claims Outperforming Mercedes-Benz In Sales For The First Time In Six Years

BMW AG is claiming that it outperformed Mercedes-Benz in terms of sales in 2021. The carmaker has beaten its German counterpart for the first time in the last six years as Mercedes-Benz had been the highest-selling luxury carmaker since 2015. Pieter Nota, Head Of Sales – BMW Group took to LinkedIn saying, “Proudly claiming number one position in the global premium automotive segment for the BMW brand in 2021,” Nota has credited the sales growth to the carmaker’s product range and operational performance.

That said, BMW is yet to disclose the annual sales numbers of 2021 but has said that deliveries have been tracking ahead of the Daimler AG brand for much of this year. According to reports, the Bavarian carmaker has been comparatively less impacted by the semiconductor shortage crisis. In fact, there is a good chance that Mercedes-Benz’s sales have been impacted mainly due to the semiconductor issue that disrupted production. Mercedes on Monday said scarce supply of components will continue to grip the industry during the first half of the year.

According to news reports, BMW will publish its full-year sales data on January 12 which is when we’ll get an idea of its sales. The carmaker delivered sold 1.7 million units in the first three quarters of 2021 and exceeded Mercedes-Benz’s by over 1.12 lakh units. Even in India, BMW Group recorded the highest ever sales growth in a decade this year at 35 percent selling 8,876 cars (BMW + MINI) and 5,191 motorcycles in 2021.

  • Latest electronic news

    Latest electronic news

Smartwatches and fitness trackers, for example, are difficult to deconstruct and recycle. As a result, when a new model is released, most consumers dispose of their old devices in hazardous waste streams. Unfortunately, this goes for many of the electronic sectors. Whether it’s a new iron or the latest online game, it’s all becoming a problem. Researchers have developed a two-metal nanocomposite for circuits that disintegrates when submerged in water, according to a study published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. The circuits were presented in a prototype transitory device, which was a working smartwatch that disintegrated in 40 hours.

Due to planned obsolescence and the rapid pace of technological advancements, new devices are constantly replacing older models, resulting in millions of tons of electronic waste generated each year. Recycling can help minimize the amount of e-waste produced and is required in many countries. On the other hand, small consumer electronics are generally not worth the effort to recycle because their pieces must be rescued by hand. However, some processing stages, such as open burning and acid leaching, can create health problems and pollution.

Both of these issues could be solved by dissolvable gadgets that disintegrate on demand. Xian Huang and colleagues had previously developed a zinc-based nanocomposite that dissolved in water and could be used in temporary circuits. Still, it wasn’t conducive enough for consumer devices. As a result, they intended to improve the electrical properties of their dissolvable nanocomposite while also designing circuits that could withstand regular use.

The researchers added silver nanowires to the zinc-based nanocomposite to solve this problem, which made it highly conductive. The circuits were then hardened through chemical processes driven by water droplets after being screen-printed onto a degradable polymer called polyvinyl alcohol.

The watch’s components, such as an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen and microcontroller, as well as resistors and capacitors embedded into the circuits, were all that remained. According to the researchers, the two-metal nanocomposite may be used to make transitory devices with performance comparable to commercial ones, which could go a long way toward addressing the problem of small electronics waste.

    E-Waste Problem

Only a portion of the problem is e-waste from discarded electrical and electronic equipment. Toxins released during mining and manufacturing are a substantial contribution to e-waste. Rare earth elements are currently essential components in high-tech electronics, yet their extraction is hazardous. Household appliances such as irons, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and refrigerators are by far the major contributors to the amount of e-waste produced.

However, as connectivity becomes integrated into daily products, the quickly developing “Internet of things” – internet-connected electronics – is predicted to generate more e-waste. E-waste handling is governed by rules. When selling a new version of the same product, sellers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the European Union must provide a mechanism for customers to dispose of their old household gadgets.

Several well-known electronics businesses have been chastised for lack of spare parts or updates, as well as suspected built-in obsolescence. Apple revealed in 2017 that it had purposefully slowed down some iPhone models as they grew older. Customers felt this was to entice them to upgrade, but Apple claimed it was to extend the life of their devices. Daisy, the company’s robot, was released in 2018 and is designed to disassemble iPhones to recover and recycle minerals. Owners of Sonos speakers chastised the company in November 2019 for no longer providing software upgrades for some of its older devices.

    What can we do?

If you’re like most people, you’re probably stumped as to what to do with that drawer full of obsolete equipment. We all produce more electronic garbage than we can handle, which has been a big issue for the past decade. We should strive to limit the quantity of e-waste that ends up in landfills. With the advancement of technology, e-waste disposal will become a more critical issue. Because most consumer electronics, such as phones, computers, and televisions, contain hazardous chemicals and toxic elements like lead, mercury, and other heavy metals, when they are disposed of in local landfills, they endanger our soil, air, and waterways.

Donate or sell – Selling your working devices is a simple approach to manage e-waste efficiently. You might be able to locate a buyer on eBay or Craigslist. Many of these purchasers will use, resell, or use/sell the components. Otherwise, recycling and comparison websites will give you a price for your old electronics and allow you to ship them off to be successfully repurposed or recycled.

    Think before you buy

REDUCE is the most crucial of the three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle). It’s so simple to get a new laptop, a smart TV, or the latest mobile phone. Most people don’t even consider whether they require them. Before purchasing anything, consider whether you genuinely need it. Why not upgrade the software instead of buying a new device if your old one is still in good working order? Instead of purchasing a new laptop, you can repair your existing one. Being a wise consumer will help you manage your household’s e-waste more effectively.

    Online Data Storage

Why utilise a memory stick or device when you can readily save significant amounts of data over the Internet? There are various cloud storage options available online, including Dropbox and Google Drive (free). In addition, some paid services provide a free 30-day trial period so you can see what works best for you.

  • Commercial EV Startup ELMS Signs Battery Supply Deal With CATL

Commercial EV Startup ELMS Signs Battery Supply Deal With CATL

U.S. commercial electric vehicle maker Electric Last Mile Solutions Inc (ELMS) on Thursday said it has signed a battery supply deal with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL). The financial terms of the deal, which runs through 2025, were not disclosed. CATL’s batteries power the Class 1 small delivery vehicle that ELMS began building last month at its plant in Mishawaka, Indiana.

The companies are also exploring a setup where CATL would have a U.S. plant that would make battery cells and ship them to the ELMS plant in Indiana for assembly into battery packs, an ELMS spokesman said. “We reached an important milestone to secure battery capacity in an extremely challenging supply environment,” ELMS’ deputy chief financial officer, Rob Song, said in a statement.

Battery makers are boosting production to meet soaring worldwide demand as carmakers accelerate the shift to electric vehicles to comply with tougher emission rules aimed at tackling climate change. CATL, which supplies numerous global automakers including Tesla Inc, Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co, has not announced where it would open a U.S. plant, but last year purchased a facility in Glasgow, Kentucky. Kentucky state officials in September 2020 offered incentives to CATL for a potential battery pack plant there.

Ningde, China-based CATL, which already has U.S. sales offices, has previously declined to comment on plans for the American market. President Joe Biden has made it a priority to support the rollout of electric vehicles to make the United States competitive with China.

Under the deal with ELMS, CATL will provide lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries using simpler cell-to-pack technology. The LFP chemistry is less expensive and safer than cobalt- or nickel-based cathodes in other batteries.

In August, Troy, Michigan-based ELMS, which went public in June through a reverse merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC), said despite impacts from COVID-19 and industry-wide supply chain problems it was on track to build 1,000 vans this year.

Following the small van, which has a starting price of $34,000 before federal tax credits, ELMS plans to build a larger Class 3 truck in the second half of 2022.
