  • Apple Continues Expansion in China with New Store Opening on March 19

Apple Continues Expansion in China with New Store Opening on March 19

Tech giant Apple has confirmed that a new Apple Store will open in Dalian, China, on March 19, 2016. The new store is part of the company’s ongoing mission to launch at least 40 new Apple Stores in China by October 2016.

The new Apple Store will be located on 66 Olympia Plaza, marking it as Apple’s second retail outlet in the port city after it opened its first store In Dalian earlier in October 2015. Dalian’s central location and inflow of tourists from Japan and Korea will help the company further secure its tech presence in China, which Apple predicts will be its most dedicated market in the future.

Apple’s agenda of launching 40 new outlets seems to be working out well after it opened stores in Nanjing, Hong Kong, Chengdu, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Beijing, and the “Green City” — Nanning, as part of its expansion plan. The brand new store will further strengthen Apple’s roots in China and prove great advertising for the iPhone maker in the hub of one of China’s most popular cities.

The Dalian Apple Store will open at 10:00 am local time. Speculation suggests that this could be the same store which the company claimed to be its “largest flagship” outlet almost three years ago. However, there is no confirmation if the upcoming store will still be Apple’s largest company store to date. Considering that the iPhone maker has been working aggressively to establish its presence around the world, with new stores in Turkey and Singapore, there is a slight possibility that these former plans have changed slightly.

Plans for Apple’s new store are already arousing curiosity regarding its architectural layout. The tech giant’s consistency in the architectural design of its stores helps give it a distinctive edge against other tech rivals, both local and international. Led by Angela Ahrendts and Jony Ive, the company’s focus on the design elements of its outlets is a clever marketing strategy for luring in more customers. The upcoming store is expected to feature some of Apple’s traditional store elements like a Genius Bar, JointVentures, workshops, and other Apple-based services.

With the new store in Dalian, Apple could provide customers with an experience better than any other. Even though an Apple Store exists in Dalian, a brand new outlet might help drive more sales for the company.

Therefore, judging by its fluent progress in opening new retail outlets in various regions of China, Apple seems well on track to fulfill its prophecy, and may even end up opening more than 40 stores by October.

  • Big discounts and store closures expected as luxury brand Tonino Lamborghini exits Hong Kong

Big discounts and store closures expected as luxury brand Tonino Lamborghini exits Hong Kong

Luxury brand Tonino Lamborghini, which carries apparel, accessories and leather goods, will exit Hong Kong amid poor sales performance of the city’s luxury market, with more than 10 independent shops and in-store counters shutting down soon.

A shop assistant at its Tsim Sha Tsui store, who has worked for the company for more than 10 years, told the Post that she and other staff members would soon have to find new jobs.

“We were told all the stores in Hong Kong would be closed, but the company didn’t say exactly when,” she added.

This comes as another blow to Hong Kong’s battered luxury goods market, after American brand Coach closed its four-storey flagship store in Central and British fashion house Burberry reduced the size of its Pacific Place store, its largest in the city, by 50 per cent.

Tonino Lamborghini, an Italian brand, was started in 1981 by the son of sports car maker and industrialist Ferruccio Lamborghini, though the two companies remain separate.

The brand has retail stores in Hong Kong and Macau which sell a variety of luxury products including apparel, bags, shoes and watches.

Discounts of as much as 70 per cent were offered to the customers in the retailer’s last battle to empty its warehouses in the city. In one of its shops in Jordan, signs which said “Exit Hong Kong” and “Closing Down Sales” had appeared in the store window.

According to Tonino Lamborghini’s official website, it has 18 shops and in-store counters all over Hong Kong, with many of them located in tourist districts such as Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui.

Since last year, the luxury retailer has been quietly closing down some of its stores and in-store counters, said the long-time staff member. She added that only a few stores remain open currently.

Rebecca Tse So-han, general manager of marketing at Yata department store, where the brand had occupied a counter for more than 10 years, said the counter closed in January after its lease expired.

“Their sales performance was not particularly good … but it was not too bad either,” she said, adding that the retailer had chosen not to renew the lease, not the other way around.

  • Lego to open largest retail store in Shanghai

Lego to open largest retail store in Shanghai

Danish toy giant Lego A/S will open its largest retail store in the world near the Shanghai Disney Resort, the company said on Tuesday.

The 1,000-square-meter store will be located on the main shopping street outside Disneyland, and will be operated by Lego.

The resort, the first Disney theme park on the Chinese mainland, is scheduled to open in mid-June.

“It will be a testament to our confidence in the China market,” said Jacob Kragh, general manager of Lego China.

Lego to open largest retail store in Shanghai

Kragh was speaking during a conference call following the release of Lego’s annual report, which showed revenue surged 25 percent to 35.8 billion kroner ($5.2 billion) last year.

The company did not share the size of individual markets, but China has enjoyed what Lego called a “highly satisfactory” 34 percent growth year-on-year in 2015.

Meanwhile, CEO Joergen Vig Knudstorp told China Daily that he believes there will be opportunities for Lego to grow as China transforms into a consumption-driven economy.

While all of the 140 countries where Lego products are sold have posted double-digit growth in 2015, China has been one of the fastest-growing markets.

Knudstorp expects that China will join the United States and Germany as the top three largest markets for Lego soon.

Consulting firm Euromonitor International has forecast that by 2017, the Chinese toy market will be worth 100 billion yuan ($15.36 billion) and the Asia-pacific region will outnumber North America in sales as the world’s largest traditional toy market.

While domestic brands still dominate the market, experts said that Chinese parents are likely to spend more on foreign toys in the coming years.

  • Victoria Beckham is opening a store in Hong Kong

Victoria Beckham is opening a store in Hong Kong

Earlier today, minutes after taking a bow at her autumn/winter ’16/’17 show during New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham announced that her burgeoning retail empire is officially on the rise with a Hong Kong storefront scheduled to open in March.

“The women in Asia really know how to dress,” Beckham said to BagSnob founder Tina Craig on a video that appeared on Vogue China’s Instagram account. During Art Basel last March, the designer (and apparent celebrity wedding dress consultant) told the South China Morning Post that she was in the process of scouting potential brick-and-mortar locations in the metropolis.

Beckham, who showed a thoroughly modern collection of contrasting stripes, tuxedo jumpsuits and one particularly sophisticated take on an evening wear kilt, opened her first freestanding boutique on London’s Dover Street in September 2014. The Hong Kong shop marks Beckham’s first freestanding location in Asia and second in the world.

“Super chic sophisticated, understand and appreciate fashion…” continued the former Spice Girl and mother of four on her newest customer base. Her brood — along with newly-minted photog son Brooklyn and dashing husband David — sat, as usual, in the front row of her runway show near Anna Wintour. “They love getting dressed up.”

  • Apple retailer iBox to focus on regional markets

Apple retailer iBox to focus on regional markets

iBox, one of Indonesia’s largest resellers of Apple products, plans to open six more retail stores by the end of 2015, mostly focusing on regional areas that are potential markets for Apple products.

Cities on the retailer’s sights include Yogyakarta, Balikpapan and Manado, showing its effort to try and capture markets outside of major cities, particularly in Java.

Herman Wong, director of iBox in Indonesia, elaborated that the retailer would increase the number of its nationwide retail stores to 48, from the current number of 42 to extend its reach within regional markets.

He described the relative market for Apple products in Indonesia as still very segmented within the upper middle- to high-income bracket demographic, adding that a lack of proper awareness on the usage and capabilities of Apple’s hardware and software is what kept the giant US brand from settling in that segment.

“For upper middle-income people in regional cities, their purchasing power would be slightly better than those of larger cities due to the lower costs of living and of goods in general,” he told on Tuesday.

Herman also said that because Apple’s principal products, such as the iPhone and the iPad, were majorly based on data and Internet usage, and with many parts of Indonesia lacking adequate data infrastructure, Apple’ s national penetration remained very minimal.

“Many Apple users in Indonesia are still concentrated within Java, particularly in major cities, where data infrastructure is more developed than in other areas. One way to expand awareness about Apple products is to also open training centers and provide training sessions on how to use the software and hardware,” he added.

iBox distributes up to 40 to 45 percent of all Apple products in Indonesia. PT Data Citra Mandiri, a subsidiary of publicly listed cellphone distributor PT Erajaya Swasembada, is responsible for operating and supplying iBox stores.

Regarding the availability of newer Apple products in Indonesia, Herman mentioned that the Apple Watch smartwatch, which was released in April, may be available in iBox stores by December. However, he could not confirm the release dates for the recently announced iPad Pro or iPhone 6S.

Erajaya Swasembada marketing and communications manager Djatmiko Wardoyo said the strong US dollar and weak domestic economic conditions had not significantly impacted sales owing to the fact that the market for Apple products remained segmented into the upper middle- to higher-income bracket buying for the “brand” value.

  • Defining the ‘perfect store’

    Defining the ‘perfect store’

The ultimate goal of the “perfect store” is to enhance a customer’s shopping experience to maximise your sales opportunities.

Many consumer goods companies operate on a one “perfect” size fits all principle. But we know treating all stores the same does not work. There are marked differences that exist not only by region, but also by market, channel and retailer.

A better way to define your “perfect store” is to acknowledge that every store is different and break your business down to the individual store level defining in-store objectives by store.

    Consider factors like:

    1. What is the perfect assortment for this store?
    1. What are the perfect pricing and promotion strategies for this store?
    1. What is the perfect location for your product in this store?
    1. What are the perfect displays for this store?
    1. How to take the perfect order in this store?

To understand what “perfect” translates to in each case, use information like point of sale, distribution and inventory data to help you define the specific goals around assortment, price and promotion and placement. The use of shopper insight data, consumer demographics and spend data and scan sales data will also help provide a rich understanding of what the perfect store looks like.

    For example:

Company A has a large seasonal promotion upcoming with major TV and supporting media advertising.

Company A negotiates with a major grocery chain with tight control over store ranging a certain promotional position and in store plan.

o Store A has a very high scan sales for this type of product. Perfection in Store A means convincing the store to place two additional touch points through a large secondary floor display along with an upgraded aisle end position, and ensuring the manager has enough additional stock available to refill the display and prevent stock outs.

o Store B has low scan sales for this type of product. Perfection in Store B means ensuring the upcoming promotion will be implemented correctly, avoiding any downgrading of position or placement Company A also looks for incremental opportunities in other types of retail outlets (independent retail, pharmacy, HORECA, route trade or others).

o Store C has high sales potential for this type of product (for example based on consumer demographics in surrounding areas), and uses distributors to get products into store. Perfection in Store C is the same as Store A, however securing additional facings on shelf to increase product visibility during and after the promotional period is required. Plus taking a turn in order that is sent back to the retailer’s distributor for fulfilment to avoid stock outs.

o Store D trades directly with Company A. Perfection in Store D means aligning the store to Company A’s view on the ideal product assortment on shelf and the ideal position, while ensuring that the perfect amount of stock is ordered based on ordering history and upcoming promotion expectations.

Finally, whose responsibility is it to define the perfect store and set the goals?

To succeed it must be the senior leadership team. Company leaders need to be engaged at the outset. It is easy to view this as an execution task rather than a strategic one – however it is both. The Perfect store has to be a pillar for your brand(s) and considered one of the company’s strategic goals. Then it can be brought to life through in-store execution.

Using the right processes, tools and technology will help; so make sure this is part of your discussions. The end goal is well worth it – winning over your competitors, at the shelf, every time.
