  • Apple iOS 12.3.1 update released to fix iMessage and VoLTE issues

Apple iOS 12.3.1 update released to fix iMessage and VoLTE issues

Apple has just released another iOS update, which addresses a couple of issues that many iPhone users have complained of lately. If you’re rocking an iPhone as your daily driver, you should be able to see a notification on your device letting you know that you can download iOS 12.3.1, the latest firmware software released by Apple.

As far as the contents of the update go, Apple says that iOS 12.3.1, which was released just two weeks after iOS 12.3, addresses an issue that could prevent iPhone users from making or receiving VoLTE (voice over LTE) calls.

Also, the update fixes many of the problems in the Messages app, including those that could cause messages from unknown senders to pop up in one’s conversation list even though the Filter Unknown Senders option is enabled.

Another Messages fix should solve another bug with Messages, which could prevent the Report Junk link from appearing in the app’s threads from unknown senders.

In other news, Apple is gearing up for the next major iOS 13 updates. Keep in mind though that Apple hasn’t yet confirmed anything about iOS 13, so take it with a tint of salt until the update is announced.

  • Apple agrees to notify users when iOS updates impacts performance

Apple agrees to notify users when iOS updates impacts performance

Following the last year debate about whether or not Apple should have informed consumers that some of its updates will slow down their iPhones, the UK Competition and Markets Authority kicked off an investigation to learn more about the matter.

The investigation only started after Apple admitted that the iOS update it pushed in late 2017 throttled down the performance of older iPhones. Fast forward more than one year and it looks like the UK government and Apple have found common ground. Apple has officially agreed to notify consumers when an iOS update will affect the performance of their iPhones.

To ensure compliance with consumer law Apple has formally agreed to improve the information it provides to people about the battery health of their phones and the impact performance management software may have on their phones.

The official statement on UK government’s website also mentions that Apple has agreed to provide easily accessible information about battery health and unexpected shutdowns, which the company has already done, along with guidance on how iPhone users can optimize the health of their phone’s battery.

Everything that Apple agreed to applies both for current and future iPhones. In case any of the commitments made by Apple will be breached at any time in the future, the company could be sanctioned by the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority).

  • Google Calendar update adds Dark Mode for Android users

Google Calendar update adds Dark Mode for Android users

Google has just announced that the long-awaited dark mode is now rolling out on Android for two of its apps: Calendar and Keep. Ahead of Android Q’s release, Google has decided to bring dark mode to many apps. We learned last week that Google Keep will be getting the feature, but Calendar is a bit of a surprise.

The announcement contains a couple of screenshots showing both Calendar and Keep apps with dark mode enabled. If you want to start using it on Google Calendar, you should head to Settings / General / Theme, and select Dark mode. It’s much easier to enable it in Google Keep; simply go to Settings and choose Enable Dark Mode.

Now, it’s worth mentioning that dark mode for Calendar is only supported on device running Android Nougat and higher. Also, if you have Android Q preview installed on your phone, you’ll be able to set the entire OS in dark mode by default. The same goes for Google Keep with one exception, dark mode will work on all devices powered by Android Lollipop and later.

According to Google, the update that brings dark mode to Calendar and Keep apps will be rolled out to compatible Android devices over the course of 15 days. The rollout has already begun on May 16 for Google Calendar, while Google Keep will get it starting today, May 20.

  • Update to Gboard makes it more Attractive

Update to Gboard makes it more Attractive

Google is pushing out an update to the Gboard virtual keyboard app for Android users. This includes support for Emoji 12.0, but only for those whose phones are running on Android Q. Some of the new emoji available includes an Otter, a service dog, a falafel, both a manual and a motorized wheelchair, and a stick of butter. Those in the healthcare industry will surely use the stethoscope and drop of blood emojis. The Unicode Consortium, which includes members such as Apple, Huawei, and Microsoft, unveiled Emoji 12.0 last February

The other new features mentioned in the update include the ability to delete search history with a long press, vertical scrolling for emoji and expression stickers (although some have already had this feature for some time now), quick access to the clipboard, sticky preferences for emoji skin tone and gender, and the ability to import/export custom words for the dictionary.

One new feature not mentioned in the changelist now matches the color of the Gboard navigation bar with the theme that you’ve selected for the virtual QWERTY. Previously the bar could only be black or white so those using Gboard might find this to be an improvement visually.

We received this update literally minutes before starting to type out this article. You check to see if it has arrived on your phone by opening the Google Play Store. Once that task is completed, tap on the hamburger menu on the left side of the search bar. Click on My apps & games and check out the apps that are in queue to be updated. If Gboard is among them, tap the update box on the right, wait for it to be installed, and the next time you are ready to do some typing you can see the changes.

  • Major Update to mobile YouTube app makes life easier

Major Update to mobile YouTube app makes life easier

A server-side update is being sent out to the mobile YouTube app. It doesn’t contain a major change, but for those who like to view streaming YouTube videos in fullscreen (which is done by holding the phone in landscape orientation), it does help correct a minor annoyance.

Before the update, let’s say you were viewing a video in landscape mode and wanted to share it with someone, or give it a thumbs up or down, or even add the video to a playlist. You would have to make the switch from landscape to portrait in order to find the appropriate icon to tap on. Then, when ready to view another video, you would have to turn the phone back to landscape mode. But the powers that be at Google recognized the inherent dangers involved when a phone owner keeps changing the orientation of his device; such a move can lead to a fumble resulting in the handset kissing the asphalt or another hard surface. It is also just plain inconvenient.

Still, it isn’t a big deal, but as Android users know, Google loves to correct minor pain points. So the update adds the bar containing the thumbs up, thumbs down, share and save icons to the YouTube UI in the landscape. To view it, simply scroll up on the screen in fullscreen mode. You will see three recommended videos overlayed on top of the screen, and directly underneath is the bar with the aforementioned icons. Note that the up and down thumbs still show how many times a video was “liked” or “disliked.”

    >The change appears on version 14.18.56 of the YouTube app for Android. Not only might it save you from dropping your phone (even surehanded NFL running backs fumble the ball without contact every now and then), over the course of a year it just might save you a few minutes of time.

  • Server-side update brings new look to Google Search

Server-side update brings new look to Google Search

Google has made a number of changes to the cards it serves up for certain search results. The headers are now pastel, and the cards feature new tabs that can provide more information about the subject. Categories ranging from the weather to sports, celebrities, and even food ingredients have these new cards. For example, the weather card has a smaller illustration but includes the temperature graph and the precipitation chances for the next day right at the bottom. Athletes have new cards with a stat tab that allows users to see how a player performed in recent games.

Looking for a movie to see? Ask Google Search to show you movies in your city and you’ll see a list of films. Switch to the performance times tabs to see when and where the movies are playing near you. Search for a specific movie or television show and a new tab called People also search for will show sub-tabs containing related titles. Similarly, when you search for a book title, you can now hit a tab marked get book to purchase it, and more by author to see other books written by the same person.

If you look up the name of a fictional character, the new Google Search result cards show more details. One of the new tabs will show you the name of the actor who portrayed this character in the movies or on television and the name of the television show and movies that the character appeared in.

The update containing these changes are being pushed out to Android users via a server-side update, and there is a possibility that your phone has also received it.
