    Hanoi retail market retains lustre

    The retail market in Hanoi is still attractive for investors, even though it has experienced business impediments during the past, a Hanoi Industry and Trade Department official said.

    Last year was continuously marked by numerous fluctuations in the modern retail market nationwide, as well as in Hanoi, which encountered many challenges in business, said Tran Phuong Lan, Director of the Department.

    Some trading centres in the city had to sell or temporarily stop their operations, including the Thai Berli Jucler Group buying Metro Vietnam, and the operations at Parkson Landmark 72 and Trang Tien Plaza being stopped for restructuring of retailers in the plaza, Lan stated.

    Counterfeit appliance business exposed

    Vietnamese authorities have cracked a counterfeit appliance retailing business passing off cheap Chinese appliances as branded European goods.

    Thanh Nien News reports that a company called Romal Vietnam was selling gas ranges, electric stovetops, ovens and blow dryers inside supermarkets, online and at shopping centres in many provinces and cities across the nation.

    A nationwide crackdown has now been launched by teams of inspectors from the National Steering Committee for Combating Smuggling, Commercial Fraud and Counterfeit Goods (also known as Committee 389).

    A Romal Vietnam shop in Hanoi was raided on January 22 and 185 Chinese products bearing Italian and German brand names on labels were seized.

    Another 85 products were seized in the central seaside town of Danang and Ho Chi Minh City police sealed a Romal store after “the manager locked its doors and fled” according to Thanh Nien News.

    The company’s director, Nguyen Thi Ninh, and her husband Nguyen Huy Tho have been summoned by police for questioning. A police source told the newspaper that Ninh, Tho and their employees admitted importing Chinese products from Zhongshan Company in Guangdong since 2008.

    Labelling the goods as European allowed the shop to import the products for between $150 and $200 and sell them for as much as $750 to $800. The fraud had netted the business several hundred thousand dollars annually.

    Index seals deal for Philippines

    Thai homewares giant Index Living Mall has signed a Philippines partner as its Asian expansion continues.

    Index will team up with the Philippines largest retail and mall operator SM Group to run the franchise for the concept for at least five years.

    Index managing director Kridchanok Patamasatayasonthi told the Bangkok Post newspaper Index chose the Philippines due to its huge market potential.

    “There’s no furniture or furnishings chain like us in the country, just small local and imported furniture stores.”

    Index opened its first store in Vietnam about three years ago and its first in Malaysia last month, in the capital city of Putrajaya. It plans 30 stores across Malaysia over a 15-20 year timeline.

    The company is also eyeing opportunities in Indonesia and hopes to double its foreign sales within five years. It will soon have 25 stores in its home market.

    Supermarkets in Vietnam lack qualified staff due to lack of professional training

    A majority of staff in Vietnam’s supermarkets and trading centres lack professional training, according to Vu Vinh Phu, chairman of the Hanoi Supermarket Association.

    Retail centres are on the rise, but they’re facing a serious shortage of well-trained staff, he said. Organising training programs for supermarket workers is not an easy task.

    Some positions – salespersons, security guards and accountants – required short-term training, but key positions such as managers and deputy directors would take more time and expense, he said.

    CUCKOO Electronics opens second store in Vietnam

    Korea’s home appliances company Cuckoo Electronics Co. Ltd. recently opened its second branded shop in Vietnam.

    The store is located in Hanoi Trung Hoa, a high-density residential city as well as a hub of business, administration, commerce, industry, culture and education.

    The company’s first shop in Vietnam opened in July in Phu My Hung, Ho Chi Minh City.

    “By opening this second branded shop in Hanoi after the Ho Chi Minh shop, Cuckoo Electronics is expanding its distribution channels and increasing brand awareness throughout major cities in Vietnam,” a company spokesperson said in a news release.

    “We will continue to enhance our reputation in Vietnam through Cuckoo’s exclusive strengths, such as high quality products, technology and localization strategies,” he added.
