    Smart commences enhanced Wi-Fi project

Smart Communications is rolling out enhanced WiFi to the Philippines’ major transportation hubs, government offices and key business establishments.

The PLDT subsidiary has earmarked close to 1 billion pesos ($21.2 million) for the service expansion. The investment forms part of PLDT’s 43 billion pesos in capital expenditure for 2016.

Smart said its free WiFi public hotspots are currently undergoing upgrades in all the four terminals of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City; Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao; Iloilo International Airport; Bacolod-Silay International Airport in Negros Occidental; and Dumaguete-Sibulan Airport in Negros Oriental.

It  has also been expanded to cover more public areas such as city halls, schools, and establishments such as malls, restaurants, and coffee shops, and  terminals of major bus companies.

Eric R. Alberto, Executive Vice President at PLDT and Smart, and ePLDT President and CEO, the aggressive rollout of the Smart Wifi footprint was made possible through key partnerships with government institutions and business establishments.

Users of the service can avail of free connectivity for an initial number of minutes just to be able to check essential services such as email, after which they may purchase credits.

Beyond providing internet access to as many people as possible, Smart WiFi is also designed as an essential tool for small and medium enterprises and institutions.

“WiFi connectivity has been proven to contribute to business growth by equipping SMEs and various organizations with an indispensable tool to engage customers, build loyalty, and gather significant information that will help them understand customer needs,” said Alberto.

Robi launches Wi-Fi in buses and taxis

Robi Axiata has introduced Wi-Fi services in 100 buses and 100 taxis in Bangladesh as part of a government-led project to improve internet availability in the nation.

The network services will be available for all users with Wi-Fi enabled devices. Robi will offer its customers purchasing data packs of at least 1GB free Wi-Fi quota to use on the network, and plans to introduce bundles with Wi-Fi quotas in the near future.

Robi has formed partnerships with local broadband provider Qubee and technology services providers AccessTel, and Aamra to deploy and maintain the hotspots. The rollout on buses and taxis is being conducted in partnership with e-commerce and e-business aggregator Coalesce.

Over the next six months, the Wi-Fi project will be extended to a total of 500 restaurants and cafes, 100 educational institutes, 10 public places, 350 buses, taxis and trains, as well as airport and rail stations.

Robi is partnering with the government on a project to realize the vision of a Digital Bangladesh, and improving internet connectivity in the nation is a key component of this initiative.

The move comes soon after Singaporean operator M1 and the nation’s Infocomm Development Authority commenced a trial of their own Wi-Fi service for public buses operated by Singapore’s main public transport operator SMRT.

M1, IDA launch trial Wi-Fi service for public buses

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and M1 have launched a trial Wi-Fi service for public buses.

Commuters on selected SMRT Service 176 buses can now use Singapore’s first WiFi-On-The-Go service, as part of the heterogeneous network (HetNet) trials.

The HetNet Trials are meant to validate advanced telecommunication technologies, and a network’s capabilities in providing pervasive and seamless connectivity in a real-life setting.

Each connected bus is linked to M1’s 4G+ network through an intelligent in-vehicle unit that boosts the bandwidth available to the on-board wireless network.

Commuters on the buses, a trunk route service linking Bukit Merah Interchange and Bukit Panjang Temporary Bus Park can go online by connecting to the “Wireless@SG” network on their smart devices. Commuters will be able to identify the two WiFi-enabled buses through on-board signages highlighting the service.

M1’s carrier WiFi service will also be available on the buses by end-April. The M1WiFi service, with download speeds more than ten times faster than available through Wireless@SG, will seamlessly handover customers between M1’s mobile network and the WiFi-On-The-Go service before, during and after their journey, to enable them to able to enjoy activities such as streaming HD video content without interruption.

In addition to passenger benefits, WiFi-On-The-Go can help business by enabling new applications. For instance, inbound tour operators can now provide tourists with WiFi on board their tour buses. Vehicle fleet operators can also use the enhanced connectivity to stream live video and collect other relevant information from the vehicle, as well as provide transactional services.

“HetNet technological innovation is expected to bring about immediate and long term benefits for citizens. With the enhanced infrastructure, as a start, users in trial areas such as MRT stations and selected buses powered by M1, can now experience better coverage with seamless connectivity, IDA assistant CEO Khoong Hock Yun said.

“Beyond the trials, we look forward to working closer with companies in the tech, engineering and R&D space to develop solutions that can meet pressing connectivity challenges.”
