Huawei, ZTE launch pre-5G network components

Huawei and ZTE have both announced the launch of pre-5G products to help operators prepare for the new technology.

ZTE released its new Pre5G MIMO 2.0 product at the China International Information and Communication Exhibition in Beijing yesterday.

The new product is aimed at the high-end market to help operators in developed countries meet the challenges of surging traffic demand and limited spectrum resources, by improving single-station spectral efficiency.

ZTE announced it has started pre-5G network deployment for more than 20 operators in China and other counties.

Huawei meanwhile unveiled what it said is the industry’s first 5G-oriented mobile edge computing (MEC) offering, MEC@CloudEdge.

The vendor said the technology is designed to equip today’s mobile networks to meet the requirements of extremely low latency, content localization and ultra-high bandwidth that will need to be met in the 5G era.

It relies on a cloud-based network architecture to optimize the user experience during activities such as augmented and virtual reality and ultra-HD video streaming

“MEC@CloudEdge is the first 5G-oriented MEC solution emanating from our R&D labs. It uses new technologies that will enable operators to deploy 5G-oriented networks for sustainable development and to achieve best user experience and faster service innovation,” Huawei president of cloud packet product line Dai Jisheng said.

ZTE launches Smart DVB-T2 Hybrid STB

ZTE has unveiled its ZXV10 B820T2-A14 set top box (STB) to deliver an enhanced viewing experience to homes around the world.

Integrating 4K ultra high definition (UHD) and over the top (OTT) services, the set top box has received favorable praise and recognition from the industry to date.

The B820T2-A14 is an advanced STB, which integrates an industry-leading super 4-core central processing unit (CPU) and 5-core graphics processing unit (GPU) to realize UHD 4K (3840×2160@30 frames per second 10-Bit color) and provide users with an excellent overall video experience.

The STB uses Google’s Android TV system and JVM in order to achieve compatibility and interoperability with other Android applications, which also integrate with ZTE’s Smart Home, such as multi-screen, HD video calls, family album, home IoT network and voice assistant.

ZTE’s B820T2-A14 STB adopts Amlogic system on a chip (SoC) with a 64 bit CPU architecture, 16GB EMMC Flash, 2GB DDR3, which guarantees that the system and applications run smoothly, provides 802.11AC 2*2 Wi-Fi wireless and RJ-45,10/100M wire access and supports Bluetooth 4.1, which enables Bluetooth remote and D-PAD connection.

ZTE said that if traditional digital video broadcast (DVB) service providers (SPs) want keep pace with the growth of 4K and OTT services, 4K DVB-T2 hybrid STBs are a strong choice for them, as they can significantly reduce the cost of the operator’s deployment.

  • Softbank, Wireless City kick off 5G project

Softbank, Wireless City kick off 5G project

Softbank and its affiliate company, Wireless City Planning, have officially launched the ‘5G Project’.

As the first phase of the project, which was announced in Tokyo last week, Softbank plans to roll out commercial services based on Massive MIMO technology from September 16, a move which Softbank says will make it the world’s first cellco to provide such services.

Under the plan, SoftBank will be deploying the technology across 100 base stations in 43 cities across Japan, of which 30-40% will be deployed in downtown areas of the Tokyo capital.

At the media conference for the launch last week, Shubun Kitahara, director of the network planning department of SoftBank’s mobile technology division, tested at four locations in downtown Tokyo, which showed that massive MIMO increased communications speed by 6.7 times on average.

According to Softbank, corresponding terminals only need to support SoftBank 4G (compatible with TD-LTE). The service is also available on the SoftBank 4G terminals customized for Y!mobile.

Aiming for 5G commercialization in 2020, Softbank last year signed separate research collaboration agreements with Huawei and ZTE covering the development of stopgap technologies on the road towards 5G.

SoftBank has teamed with ZTE to help develop networking equipment based on ZTE’s Pre5G technology, such as the vendor’s Massive MIMO base stations.

Massive MIMO base stations have the capacity to support more than 100 antenna elements, allowing up to eight users to transfer data simultaneously.

SoftBank already has cooperation agreements covering Massive MIMO as well as ultra-dense networks and multi-user shared access technology.

  • Apple iPhone 6s Sales in China Below Expectations, Says Boutique Researcher J.L. Warren

Apple iPhone 6s Sales in China Below Expectations, Says Boutique Researcher J.L. Warren

Junheng Li with boutique research shop J.L. Warren Capital this morning opines that Apple‘s (AAPL) rollout of its iPhone 6s is failing to meet expectations, citing as the main reason a failure of the Chinese market to deliver.
“According to information and/or data readily available from AAPL suppliers, we consider that the iPhone 6s initial launch in the 12 markets globally, is not meeting market expectations,” writes Li.

Oddly enough, although Apple announced on September 28th that its first-weekend sales of the 6s beat last year’s 10 million for the iPhone 6, selling more than 13 million units, Li argues the result was underwhelming.

“During the first week (including weekend) or 3 days post launch, we estimate ~13million units were sold. This number is lower than original expectations, largely due to an overestimated demand from mainland China.”

Li cites some China market data from something called Gray Market Marker, which apparently collects the price of iPhones trading on the black market:

AAPL launched the iPhone 6s simultaneously in Hong Kong and mainland China which cannibalized sales in HK. According to the largest grey market make [sic] a consumer electronics trading platform, the current spot prices for many models even on the launch data (9/30/2015) were below the official retail prices, unprecedented in the iPhone launch history. In total, we estimate that ~2.5-3 million of units of the 6s were sold in the mainland and ~1.5 units sold in HK. In comparison with previous years iPhone launches, when the mainland was not included in the initial launch, only 30% of the 6s purchases were from mainland, vs. 50% in previous years.

(One point not addressed by Li is whether the premium can be expected to be lower, or even absent, precisely because the iPhone 6 was only available on the black market last year, having been left out of rhr first round of retail sales.)

Li offers one explanation for why she thinks sales to China are below plan: “Since ZTE and Huawei already launched smart phones with 3D force touch, the new screen is not novel to Chinese consumers.”

Li also offers some other tidbits, such as that the iPhone that comes in rose gold finish was the best seller, making 45% of sales.

As for the outlook, she opines,

We believe that China is the biggest moving piece for AAPL’s global sales in 2015, given it is about 20+% of the company’s global market and the demand for the iPhone is growing at ~20% according to our research. We currently project 200 million units of sell-in for iPhone 6/6+ and iPhone 6s/6s+ combined in 2015, which is 10million sell-through units lower than, the current street consensus.

Apple shares today are down 81 cents, or 0.7%, at $110.50.
