Khun Thai Tea appoints First Indonesian Franchise

Entrepreneur Amelia Fransisca has been appointed master franchise holder for Khun Thai Tea Indonesia.

Fransisca, who has a 10-year tenure in the foodservice industry, said she chose Khun Thai Tea for its novel, fresh taste despite its low sugar content compared to other competitors, amidst trending consumer demand in Indonesia for original tea and healthier beverage options.

“This brand will be huge as an option for fresh tea and healthier choices,” said Fransisca. “I believe the brand will also become more recognizable to our people (especially among young people) because it is introduced and organized by a great team and a great plan.”

Indonesia is already home to four Khun Thai Tea outlets – three in Jakarta and one in Bali. Fransisca plans to spur growth by focussing her efforts in Indonesia’s cities and suburban areas, with special care given to the Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi areas, where she says new outlets will help the brand gain more recognition.

She has also chosen to open in these areas first due to local consumers’ strong buying power, range of food and beverage choices and exposure to product innovation. They are also well-positioned in terms of proximity, allowing closer supervision of procedures, services, and product quality.

“The food and beverage business still has lots of room to develop and innovate nowadays, especially in Indonesia. That is why F&B is a good business,” she said. “Selling drinks is also simpler, and delivers good margins for comparatively average business costs … Compared to starting up a new business, it is also safer to choose a franchise.”

“According to recent research conducted through social media in Indonesia, a glass of milk tea with boba is still the number-two most-wanted product on most Indonesians’ must-buy list, after famous chicken dishes called ‘Ayam Geprek’.”

Khun Thai Tea is currently amongst the fastest-growing beverage store brands in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

China Mobile, ZTE launch maritime broadband solution

ZTE and the Zhejiang branch of China Mobile have jointly launched commercial trials of a new maritime broadband satellite solution.

The solution, Heweitong, is designed to help solve common problems of maritime communication, such as poor coverage, slow data rate, and high cost.

It will allow people at sea to communicate and access the internet by merely installing a mobile app on their smartphones.

During the trial period, China Mobile and ZTE are offering the solution for free. Once commercially launched, the companies expect the cost to be 90% lower than traditional marine communications solutions.

Heweitong has already undergone verification testing involving more than 50 ships and nearly 300 users in the Bohai Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea.

The project forms part of China Mobile’s goal of offering ubiquitous connectivity via an integrated space, sky and land based communications solution.

  • Lush Prepares Itself for Growth

    Lush Prepares Itself for Growth

Global beauty business Lush posted a £3.9 million (A$7.17 million) operating loss in the year to June 30, 2018, compared to an operating profit of £22.6 million ($41.54 million) the year prior.

The decline was due to the rising cost of goods, manufacturing, staff, rent and administrative costs, and a slowdown in the US market, which outpaced a 6.6 per cent increase in turnover on a constant currency basis to £524.4 million ($963.9 million) in FY18.

This reflects a 4.4 per cent in like-for-like sales and 9.6 per cent increase in online sales, compared to the previous corresponding period.

Still, GlobalData retail analyst Emily Salter called this a “solid year” for the brand off the back of its investment in stores and innovation.

“The retailer relocated 11 UK stores to larger units during the period which saw an impressive 39.6 per cent increase in like-for-likes, indicating Lush’s dedication to the offline channel as it seeks to further differentiate its unique offering and drive customers to stores,” Salter said.

Salter also pointed to the recent launch of a new global website, which she expects to bolster conversion and increase basket sizes thanks to the “more attractive, aspirational and easy-to-navigate site”.

She believes the brand is in a good position for growth due to its strong brand identity, and commitment to vegan and ethical practices.

There is a downside to this, however, as Salter said the brand’s focus on natural ingredients was partly to blame for the increased costs.

“The retailer must work to return to profitability in its current financial year, although the increased ingredient costs will be hard to navigate due to Lush’s focus on natural and good quality ingredients,” Salter said.

While performance in Lush’s largest retail market, the US, was disappointing – with declining footfall contributing to sales falling by 7.5 per cent – its UK business fared slightly better.

Lush Australia was contacted for comment.

The chain’s Clarkson store, which will be the retailer’s first purpose-built location in the Perth area, will feature a comfortable in-store environment and a full-service drive through.

Zarraffa’s new drive through brings the total to six in Western Australia, with the other five stores located in various suburbs across Perth, including Ellenbrook, Canning Vale, Currambine, Peppermint Grove and in Kalgoorlie.

“The Clarkson store typifies what Zarraffa’s customers experience on the East Coast where the brand has been built steadily since 1996,” said founder and managing director Kenton Campbell.

The Bankstown store will be the retailer’s fourth store under the NSW area developer arrangement, Zarraffa announced.

The retailer said more stores have been proposed this year for the company.

“Zarraffa’s has built its reputation on creating small business opportunities, through specialised training, operational consistency and great products and service – year on year.”

  • Netflix removes key feature from its iOS app

Netflix removes key feature from its iOS app

AirPlay is a feature found on iOS and Mac devices that allows users to send audio, video, photographs, screenshots and more between Apple devices sharing a similar network. Using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, AirPlay will let a home with multiple HomePod speakers in different rooms, share the same song throughout the house. And with several smart TV manufacturers adding support for the feature, content from an iOS or Mac device can be viewable on certain large-screen smart TVs.

There have been a number of complaints from iPhone and iPad users stating that AirPlay was no longer working with Netflix. That was unusual because the iOS version of the streaming video app has supported AirPlay since 2013. The complaints from iOS users state that when they tried to use AirPlay in the Netflix app, a pop-up error message appeared that said, “Cannot play title. Please try again later.”

But there is a reason why AirPlay no longer works with Netflix. As a result of what it is calling “technical limitations,” Netflix has pulled AirPlay support from its iOS app. This is actually noted by the video streamer on its support page. Considering that this was an iOS feature that Netflix had supported for over five years, it is strange that AirPlay would all of a sudden no longer work with Netflix. The company has not divulged the details of the “technical limitations” that have forced it to stop offering AirPlay support (more on that later).

This isn’t the end of the world for Netflix subscribers used to employing AirPlay. After all, the Netflix app can be installed or is already installed on a number of smart television sets. But using AirPlay does make it easier for iOS users with Netflix to stream content from their own account to a smart TV that does not have their Netflix login information.

“We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn’t a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn’t) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices.”-Netflix< The Netflix support page lists some other options that iOS users can try in order to cast Netflix from their phone or tablet to a compatible television. With the Netflix 2nd Screen option, subscribers open the Netflix app on their iOS device and television, signing into the same account on both devices. The mobile device and the TV must share the same Wi-Fi network. On the mobile device, the user needs to tap on "Cast" found in the upper or lower right of the screen, and select the television that he/she wants to view Netflix on. After deciding which show or movie to watch, the user hits play and the selected content will appear on the TV. Another option, found on Philips, Polaroid, Sharp, Skyworth, Soniq, Sony, Toshiba, and Vizio TVs, will allow you to Chromecast Netflix from your iOS device to your television. Simply open the Netflix app on your iOS device, and tap on the "Cast" icon in the upper or lower right hand side of the screen. Select the device you want to watch Netflix on, choose a television show or movie, and hit play. Last month, Apple became a Netflix competitor by unveiling Apple TV+. This is a video streaming service that will be available this fall on iOS devices along with certain smart TVs. There will be new, original programming from Apple along with content from HBO, Showtime and others. Could this new rivalry be behind the "technical limitations" that forced Netflix to stop supporting AirPlay? After all, it does seem strange that Netflix was able to support AirPlay for from 2013 until now, just when Apple introduces a service that will compete with it. Netflix, of course, will never admit to this. And regardless what the true reasons are, the bottom line is that iOS users will have to resort to the aforementioned alternatives if they want to cast any streaming Netflix content from their iPhone or iPad to their smart TV.

  • Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4MATIC Teased Ahead Of Official Debut

Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4MATIC Teased Ahead Of Official Debut

Mercedes-Benz has recently put out a new teaser announcing the imminent arrival of the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35. The new teaser photo released by the German automaker on social media gives us a glimpse of the car’s rear section, mainly just the new LED taillamp along with the ‘CLA 35’ badging, and a partially visible boot-mounted rear spoiler. And knowing Mercedes, the Stuttgart-based carmaker will be coming out with several more teaser images before revealing the actual car. While the carmaker has already unveiled the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA, the next obvious choice had to be the AMG model, by the looks of it we won’t have to wait very long. In fact, it’s possibly the car will be showcased at the upcoming New York Auto Show 2019.

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4MATIC will come powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The motor is tuned to churn out 302 bhp and develops 400 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox along with the company’s 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. This will make the AMG CLA 35 the most powerful CLA model yet, of course, that is until the new CLA 45 is launched.

Based on the spy photos we have seen so far, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 appears to be very similar to the regular new-gen CLA sedan and is likely to feature a single slat grille with the large three-pointed star at the centre. The test mule also came with LED headlamps, black alloys, a black roof, black ORVMs, LED taillamps and a dual exhaust system.

  • Focals smartglasses could give us a glimpse at Apple’s next big thing

Focals smartglasses could give us a glimpse at Apple’s next big thing

North’s Focals smartglasses look nothing like the original version of Google Glass, which is a good thing. In fact, if you didn’t know any better, you’d think that they were just an ordinary pair of spectacles. But Focals feature Alexa integration allowing you to hear the latest news, view the weather forecast, stream music, control the smart appliances in your home, and more. The glasses will also show you upcoming appointments from your calendar, let you arrange for an Uber, send a text and navigate with turn-by-turn directions. Focals can be controlled through the use of the ring-like “Loop” which is a four-directional joystick that you wear on your finger to interact with the glasses.

Focals were launched last October and are priced at $599 and up. Prescription lenses cost an additional $200. Personal sizing is required, which means that if you want to buy a pair, you will have to visit one of the company’s showrooms in Brooklyn or Toronto. There are also pop-up locations where this can be done. For example, from today through April 9th, the company can fit you in San Francisco. April 10th and 11th, a pop-up location will be open in Santa Clara. You can book an appointment for any of the locations through the Focals web site.

The Focals smartglasses have limited functionality; the company says that it did this so that users won’t be distracted from the things right in front of them. But that doesn’t mean that new functions aren’t being added. Thanks to a new update, when a Focals wearer is listening to streaming music from Spotify, he/she can now skip a song, adjust the volume of a connected device like a phone or speaker, and see the title of the song and the name of the artist. And the volume of the music can be controlled even when the display is off, by using the Loop. The update also gives Focals the ability to recommend the fastest transit route for a user’s morning and evening commutes, and the it will also show any delays. The device will calculate an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) and share it with the user’s contacts.

With a feature called Rewind, the Focals smartglasses can be used to make a voice recording of a meeting. Afterwards, North will send out an email containing a transcript of the meeting along with a recording of the get together. Since Focals are made to the exact specifications of the wearer, it isn’t easy just to take them off and give the glasses to a friend to check them out. So North came up with something it calls Lenscast. The latter puts your Focals’ display on top of the live camera feed from your smartphone to show others how Focals work. The glasses use Bluetooth to pair with your iOS or Android phone, and charge using a special carrying case.

Last month, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International said that he expects mass production of the company’s AR glasses to begin no later than the second quarter of 2020. At least with the first version of the device, Apple is reportedly going to play it safe by having its glasses access the processor, GPS, memory chip and other components belonging to a user’s iPhone.

Many consider smartglasses to be the next big thing. Nearly two years ago, analyst Gene Munster said that the wearable will be bigger than the iPhone.

  • Get incredible Google Home Hub discounts

Get incredible Google Home Hub discounts

Even though it earned pretty good reviews after seeing daylight just six months ago and presumably contributed to Google’s thriving smart speaker sales numbers during the final quarter of 2018, the Home Hub has been massively discounted lately more times than we can count on the fingers of one hand.

Right now, the Google Assistant-powered smart display is back up to its $149 list price at both its manufacturer’s official US e-store and third-party retailers like Best Buy, but one self-described “social shopping marketplace” has this extremely versatile and convenient product on sale at a big markdown yet again.

The “catch” is you need to purchase two units to save a frankly unbelievable amount of money. Basically, you’re looking at a two-for-one or buy-one-get-one-free type of deal, as this heavily discounted Google Home Hub two-pack in black currently costs $153.95, or a hair over the aforementioned regular price of a single device. You’ll want to hurry, though, as the promotion, also known as a power deal in MassGenie user lingo, is set to expire within just four hours of the time of this writing.

If you’d like to get something nice for yourself and a friend, a family member, or a special someone, today’s super-limited offer effectively brings the price of a Google Home Hub down to $77. Meanwhile, for only three extra bucks, you can purchase just the one smart display in your choice of Chalk or Charcoal paint jobs, although you have even less time to jump on that particular deal.

For those unfamiliar with what this bad boy can do, suffice to say it’s essentially a smart speaker with a touchscreen… and smart home hub capabilities. You can watch YouTube videos, stream music, control various smart home accessories, and get answers to your most burning questions, all without ever lifting a finger.

  • Will last night’s GPS date-based rollover ?

    Will last night’s GPS date-based rollover ?

Most likely you won’t be affected, but due to the strange way that Global Positioning Systems (GPS) measure time, some devices were at risk of being reset yesterday at 7:59 pm EDT. GPS systems affected could be reset back to January 6th, 1980. This is a risk because devices using GPS measure time by counting weeks, but they only have enough storage to count 1,024 weeks (nearly 20 years).

The last time GPS systems were in this position was back in August 1999. Most of the public had never even heard of GPS back then, and it wasn’t until apps like Google Maps brought GPS into consumers’ hands that the public became aware of it.

We wouldn’t be too consumed with angst. The Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber and Infrastructure division says that as long as your device is less than ten years old, or if you have updated this device over the years, your GPS driven app should be safe to use. In other words, if you are using a 2008 T-Mobile G1 as your daily driver for some reason, and never installed any Google Maps updates, the app might not be of much help today. Mapping and navigation firm TomTom said on its website that those who frequently update their devices have nothing to worry about, but others could find it impossible to navigate using GPS.

The DHS’ Cyber and Infrastructure unit notes that “A nanosecond error in GPS Time can equate to one foot of position (ranging) error.” In other words, if you are counting on a GPS driven device or app to get you from point “A” to point “B,” blindly following the directions on an affected device could land you at point “C.”

Many industries depend on GPS these days, including some that weren’t around ten years ago like ride sharing (Uber, Lyft). Considering how much more important GPS is to the global economy these days, newer devices have been updated and can now count weeks using 13 bits of data instead of 10. This means that you shouldn’t have to worry about the GPS on your mobile device resetting until 2176.

  • Twitter tests new labels that help users

Twitter tests new labels that help users

Twitter is reportedly looking at different ways to allow users to edit their tweets after they have been posted. It also appears that there are some other features being tested. A tweet disseminated by Twitter today reads, “We want it to be easy to follow and join conversations on Twitter. We’re testing out labels on replies: author mentioned and following. If you see them, let us know what you think!”

The “author” label will be applied to replies tweeted by the person who kicked off a particular thread. This will allow users to see if a particular response in a thread came from the person who wrote the original tweet. The “mentioned” label will be attached to a reply from a Twitter user whose “handle” was mentioned in a thread’s original tweet. The “following” label will appear on a reply tweeted by a Twitter member who follows the original author in a thread.

Only a limited number of Twitter users have seen these labels employed. Since the new features aren’t found in the latest version of Twitter in the Google Play Store (v7.79), they might be rolling out via a server-side update.

While the Labels being tested by Twitter might help users understand what is going on in a particular thread, we would imagine that most Twitter subscribers would prefer to have the ability to edit their own tweets instead.
