  • Vietnamese export containers worth $517,000 go missing at Dubai port

Vietnamese export containers worth $517,000 go missing at Dubai port

Four Vietnamese companies could lose five containers of spices and cashew worth US$517,000 they shipped to Dubai under what seem mysterious circumstances.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, they had sold pepper, cashew, cinnamon, and anise to Bab Al Rehab Foodstuff Trading Llc.

But four of the containers have been claimed by unidentified parties at Jebel Ali Dubai Port without paying the Vietnamese companies.

The export was done under the documents against payment method, which requires the buyer to show proof of payment before collecting the goods.

The documents had been sent by banks in Vietnam to UAE’s Ajman Bank, which confirmed receipt.

But apparently it no longer has them, and has yet to explain why, the exporters said.

They are concerned the remaining container, set to land on July 26, will also be misappropriated.

They have repeatedly asked the buyer to make payments, but the company has yet to respond.

The Vietnam Pepper Association, representing the four companies, has reported to Vietnamese authorities and the UAE embassy in Vietnam.

The Vietnam Trade Office is working with Ajman Bank, Jebel Ali Dubai port and the Dubai police to investigate possible fraud.

  • Pepper exports rise in volume

    Pepper exports rise in volume

Vietnam exported 153,000 tons of pepper worth US$483 million in the first half of this year, up 24% in volume but down 13.7% in value year-on-year.

According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the average price stood at $3,184 per ton, a decrease of 29.7% from a year earlier, due to weaker global demand.

Pepper exports to the U.S., UAE, India, Germany, the Netherlands, the U.K., and South Korea declined by 20-70%.

China and the U.S.were Vietnam’s biggest markets, accounting for 35% and 16% of its exports.

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association, China has large inventories of pepper and so will import less in the second half of this year. It had imported 46,169 tons in the first five months of the year.

Other major importers like the U.S. and the European Union will also import less pepper due to their economic situation and high inventories.

The price of black pepper in Vietnam is currently VND67,000-69,000 ($2.8-2.9) per kilogram, down VND3,000-5,000 from a year ago, and that of white pepper is VND103,000, down VND6,000.

  • Apple releases iOS 16.6 to patch several software flaws some of which have been actively exploited

Apple releases iOS 16.6 to patch several software flaws some of which have been actively exploited

Apple has released iOS 16.6 for the iPhone and iPadOS 16.6 for, well, the iPad. The updates will patch several vulnerabilities including one that impacts the Apple Neural Engine. The latter delivers on-device natural language processing and image analysis faster and with more energy efficiency than the CPU or GPU. Apple says that an app might be able to  execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges which means an attacker could run any command on a targeted iPhone or iPad.

This patch is heading to iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (3rd generation) and later, iPad Air (3rd generation) and later, and iPad mini (5th generation). A vulnerability on the Find My app could allow sensitive location information to be divulged via an app. This patch will be available to the iPhone 8 and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 5th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

Several patches for the Kernel are part of the update. This is the core part of an operating system. With one flaw, Apple says it is aware of reports that the vulnerability has been actively exploited on versions of iOS released before iOS 15.7.1. With this vulnerability, “an app may be able to modify sensitive kernel state” allowing the attackers to manipulate how the operating system runs.

Other possible attacks against the iOS and iPadOS kernels listed by Apple include one that could allow the attackers to elevate privileges giving them the ability to do more than standard users. Another flaw could lead to a denial-of-service attack that could prevent users from accessing the features and apps they want to use. And another vulnerability can give an attacker root privileges. This could allow an attacker to create a backdoor, add a trojan, or delete any information on an iPhone or iPad.
There are two vulnerabilities listed for the WebKit browser engine including one that has been actively exploited according to reports that Apple has become aware of. With these security issues, it is a good idea to install the update now. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the directions. Other updates available today include watchOS 9.6, macOS 13.5, and tvOS 16.6.

I can tell you that the update has hit the Netflix app on my iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 16.6.
  • TikTok launches text posts in an attempt to take on X

TikTok launches text posts in an attempt to take on X

Despite the social network bleeding users, Twitter’s owner, Elon Musk, took some questionable decisions over the weekend. After rebranding Twitter’s logo to “X” and promising to bring a bunch of new features that no one asked for, Musk’s is now facing another big problem: the stiff competition.

Meta’s attempt to take on Twitter hasn’t been entirely successful, as Threads still needs a lot of features to offer a similar users experience. But another contender to take Twitter’s place has just made its first step toward fulfilling its plans.

TikTok has just announced text posts, a new feature that offers users a Twitter-like experience. This will allow creators to share their stories and other types of content in a different, simpler way. The new feature is available starting today and doesn’t involve too many clicks to make it work.

When you access the Camera page, you can now choose from three options: photo, video, and text. Tapping on the text option will direct users to the text creation page where they can type out the content of their post. It’s not as fast and smooth as tweeting a message but considering that TikTok is a video-first platform, this will have to do for now.

In addition to creating posts, TikTok users can also customize their content by including Sound, tagging a location, enabling comments, and allowing Duets. It will enrich the text posts and make them more dynamic beyond what Twitter offers currently.

For example, TikTok users can add stickers to their text posts, tags and hashtags, as well as background colors and sounds. On top of that, it’s also possible to save drafts and store them with other unpublished posts for later editing or discard them if you’re not content with how they end up.

It’s a neat new feature that will probably not attract many of Twitter’s users, since Musk’s social platform caters to a different type of audience, but you might as well try in out before the ship sinks to have some alternatives to retreat to.

  • AirAsia Philippines drops mask rule

    AirAsia Philippines drops mask rule

AirAsia Philippines has ended wearing face masks on all domestic flights following the government’s decision to lift the state of public health emergency under Presidential Proclamation 297, filed by the Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, wearing face masks for flights to international destinations remain subject to the existing health protocols in the destination country. AirAsia destinations Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan lifted the face mask requirement as early as Q1 2023.

AirAsia Philippines country head for communications and public affairs and spokesperson Steve Dailisan said deep cleaning and aircraft sanitation will continue after each flight.

“We want our guests to feel secure when they fly with AirAsia. Although it is no longer a policy, guests and crew may wear face masks whenever necessary. However, we also want to reiterate that our aircraft are equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters which filter and block 99.97% of airborne particles, including known bacteria and viruses”.

Guests can book a PHP257 one-way base fare for domestic and international flights and a PHP2,293 fare for other international destinations flying thru Kuala Lumpur, to Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne, for travel until 30 September 2023.

  • Costco fined for mislabelling seafood origin

Costco fined for mislabelling seafood origin

Costco Wholesale Australia Pty Ltd has paid penalties totalling $33,000 after the ACCC issued it with two infringement notices for alleged false or misleading labelling of the country and place of origin on lobster products and failing to comply with the Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard.

In early January 2023, Costco sold two packages of lobsters from its Casuarina warehouse in Western Australia which were labelled ‘Kirkland Signature PREVIOUSLY FROZEN WHOLE COOKED WA LOBSTER’ and ‘Australian Lobster’. Other packages were also displayed for sale with the allegedly misleading labels. In fact, the lobsters were imported from Canada.

The ACCC also alleges that Costco did not comply with the specific Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard because it used the Australian-made kangaroo logo as well as a full bar chart indicating that the lobsters were exclusively Australian when they were not.

“Selling goods with an incorrect country or place of origin label is a breach of Australian Consumer Law,” ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh said.

“Many shoppers pay a premium to purchase Australian seafood rather than imported products, which makes the accuracy of the labelling a crucial part of enabling consumers to make an informed choice.”

“While a small number of consumers were impacted in this instance, this conduct involved a large and sophisticated business,” Mr Keogh said.

“This action by the ACCC is a reminder to all businesses, large or small, of the importance of ensuring that country of origin labelling is accurate and complies with the Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard.”

Costco is one of the world’s largest retailers and operates warehouse outlets in 13 countries. Costco operates 15 warehouses in Australia.

The Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard 2016 applies to most food available for retail sale in Australia, including food that is imported into Australia for retail sale.

The standard requires that if a product is grown, produced or made in Australia, the label must contain a ‘standard mark’ label which includes the kangaroo in a triangle logo which indicates the product is of Australian origin; a bar chart indicating the percentage of Australian ingredients in the food; and explanatory text which states whether the product was grown, produced or made in Australia.

In addition to the Country of Origin Food Labelling Information Standard, section 29 of the Australian Consumer Law also prohibits businesses from making false or misleading representations about the place of origin of the goods they supply to consumers.

  • HCMC hotel business gloomy as foreign tourists keep away

HCMC hotel business gloomy as foreign tourists keep away

Hotels in Ho Chi Minh City are suffering from low occupancy rates due to a sharp drop in international visitor arrivals and domestic tourists’ preference for traveling to beaches.

In May, amid a wave of hotel closures and conversions into office buildings, the Norfolk Hotel in District 1 with over 100 rooms stopped operating.

In mid-June many hotels in tourist areas such as Bui Vien Street, Bui Thi Xuan Street and Le Thanh Ton – Ly Tu Trong in District 1 temporarily closed due to lack of customers.

The latest accommodation market report by real estate consultancy Savills Vietnam said hotel occupancy rates in the second quarter were down 8 percentage points quarter-on-quarter.

All segments suffered as foreign visitor arrivals to the city fell by 13% quarter-on-quarter. The rate of overnight guests in the city was only 19%, the lowest in the country.

Hotels are currently relying on business guests since the city is a transit point between various provinces and cities.

Troy Griffiths, deputy general director of Savills, said recovery in international tourism has been slower in Vietnam than other countries in the region.

He pointed out that the number of visitors from China, the second biggest market, was 78% down in the first half from 2019, the year before Covid.

Trang Minh Ha, chairman of investment firm North Stars Asia, said the third quarter, when it is the rainy season, is the low tourist season in HCMC, and so occupancy and room rates would continue to be low.

The number of hotels that close permanently or temporarily could rise sharply, he said.

The economic difficulties post-pandemic, boring and monotonous tourism products and Vietnam’s difficult visa policies have kept tourists away, he said.

The city needs to strengthen programs on attracting visitors to compete with countries such as Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia, he said.

“HCMC’s hotel industry is waiting for an optimistic signal from the economy for recovery. However, the market may have to wait until the end of 2024 for a solid positive signal.”

  • Google Assistant and AI might help Pixel users understand what they are reading online

Google Assistant and AI might help Pixel users understand what they are reading online

code found in the latest beta version of the Google app (version 14.29) indicates that Google Assistant will soon be able to use generative AI to help summarize passages found on the internet. While browsing the web, a user can tap on a “Summarize” button when the Google Assistant’s presence is requested with the iconic “Hey Google” call out. Or, you can ask the Assistant to “Summarize this” to see a quick summary of what you are reading on the screen.

The Summarize suggestion will appear when browsing the internet using Chrome or when an app opens a web page in a Custom Tab (also powered by Chrome). At the moment, the feature does not work as requests for the Assistant to summarize a passage from a website return an error message as seen in the embedded image below.

While it isn’t clear if and when this feature will be made available, it is a strong possibility that the Google Assistant’s AI summary of internet content will be limited to Pixel phones and tablets only. Google Assistant is supposed to be more optimized and offer faster responses on a Pixel handset.
The problem with relying on AI to summarize a document is the same problem that is typical with artificial intelligence: the possibility that summaries from Google’s AI service will contain “hallucinations.” These AI platforms are “trained” using information derived from humans and could contain biases and outright incorrect data. But this is something that you need to keep in the back of your mind anytime you use AI to interpret information.
The Google app right now will also help answer your queries using generative AI on Android and iOS. All you have to do is tap the “Generate” button to the right of your question on the Google app and you’ll see more enhanced information related to your search. Again, you’ll need to watch out for hallucinations and biases, if any.
  • Spotify to raise prices of its Premium plan in the US

Spotify to raise prices of its Premium plan in the US

Spotify will no longer remain one of the few music streaming services in the US not to increase its subscription prices. Just about every other player in the market raised prices in the last year or so, while Spotify benefited from influx of customers that decided to switch services. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long, as Spotify is about to raise prices too.

Spotify plans to raise the monthly subscription prices in the US by $1. That means that the price of the ad-free $9.99 plan will become $10.99 per month in the United States. Spotify is reportedly expected to announce as early as next week, but only for the US market.

The bad news is price hikes will be announced for many other markets too in the following weeks, although it’s unclear where and when these changes will be introduced. Spotify has been keeping the price of its premium plan stuck on the $9.99 psychological threshold for quite some time, but that’s about to change for customers in the US.

Currently, Spotify offers a free, ad-supported plan that provides access to over 80 million songs, podcasts and audiobooks, downloadable podcasts, the ability to take the music with your when traveling abroad (for 14 days only), and the option to pick and play any track on mobile (select playlists only).

The Premium plan still costs $9.99 and doesn’t have the limitations that the free plan has. On top of that, it allows subscribers to download music and podcasts, play songs in any order, and listen to the highest music quality. Of course, there will be no ads running while listening to Spotify if you’re subscribed to the Premium plan.

Students get 50% off Premium for up to 4 years, while Premium Duo offers two people living together the option to get their own Premium account for 1 discount price. Also, the Premium Family covers up to 6 people living together each getting their own Premium account for 1 discount price. The Family plan comes with Spotify Kids and explicit filter.

  • Online platforms pay $166M in tax in Vietnam

Online platforms pay $166M in tax in Vietnam

Vietnam collected VND3.94 trillion (US$166.5 million) in taxes from 57 foreign online platforms including Google, Apple, Facebook, Netflix, and TikTok in the first half of this year.

Of the sum, VND3.4 trillion was paid directly via the portal of the General Department of Taxation (GDT), which was established last March to make it easier for cross-border giants to pay their taxes in Vietnam.

Their representatives in Vietnam paid the remaining sum.

The GDT also said that tax revenue from e-commerce platforms in the first five months of this year reached VND246 billion, equal to 34% of 2022’s revenue.

It said the tax revenue collected from e-commerce providers in 2022 and 2021 was VND716 billion and VND261 billion, respectively.

The tax authority has recorded data from over 330 e-commerce platforms through the e-commerce portal operating since the end of last year.

Particularly in the first quarter of this year, 64,300 individuals and 22,840 organizations traded on those platforms with 9 billion transactions registering a total value of VND11.5 trillion.

The GDT said it is working on setting up rules on exploiting information from e-commerce platforms’ databases to manage taxes more effectively.

This agency is checking and comparing information of several taxpayers who are e-commerce platform owners, payment intermediaries, partners of foreign companies in Vietnam, and foreign suppliers that do not have a fixed business establishment in Vietnam.

So far, it has inspected 15 enterprises and handled, fined, or collected tax arrears of VND129 billion, reducing tax loss by VND986 billion and reducing VAT deduction by VND114 billion.

Luxury car dealer allegedly sells customer’s $1M Brabus 800

Without his knowledge, luxury car dealer Phan Cong Khanh has been accused of selling a customer’s luxury car for VND24.5 billion ($1.04 million).

A person named Manh from the southern province of Kien Giang has complained to the police that he had lent his Brabus 800 to Khanh in early June to put on display at the launch of his dealership in Ho Chi Minh City.

But a few weeks later he found out that Khanh had sold the car to a buyer in HCMC for VND24.5 billion.

Brabus is a German high-performance automotive aftermarket tuning company.

The Brabus 800 is the upgraded version of the Mercedes AMG G63, and costs around VND30 billion in Vietnam.

Some vendors have also complained that Khanh owes them money for services they provided for the launch of K Supper, his luxury car dealership in District 1.

They include VND100 million for bouquets, VND25 million for renting a crane and some money for construction.

Mohamach Da Pha’s employee has also been accused of mortgaging a person’s car without consent.

The police said that in April Pha borrowed a VND1.8-billion BMW from a man named Son and offered to sell it.

But Son found out recently he had mortgaged his car for VND1 billion.

    The HCMC police are investigating.

Khanh, a native of the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre, has the reputation of selling the most luxurious cars in Vietnam.

In June, he entered the car dealership business in 2017 and opened his K Supper showroom in HCMC’s District 1.

He regularly posts photos of himself standing next to Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Porsche cars on social media, and writes about how young people can start a business and make money.

  • India’s rice export ban gives Vietnam golden y

India’s rice export ban gives Vietnam golden y

Vietnam’s rice exporters could raise prices and sign long-term contracts with buyers now that India, the world’s largest supplier, has ordered an export halt.

Indian government on July 20 announced a ban on non-basmati white rice as retail rice prices climbed 3% in a month after heavy monsoon rains caused significant damage to crops.

India accounts for more than 40% of world rice exports, and non-basmati white and broken rice accounted for around 10 million tons of a total of 22 million tons of Indian rice exports last year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With the ban taking effect, global insiders have raised concerns about food price rises.

Professor Vo Tong Xuan, an economist and expert in rice farming, said given the situation, the second half of the year will offer a golden opportunity for Vietnamese rice exports.

In the first half of the year, the average export price of Vietnamese rice increased by 11% to US$539 a ton.

After this ban, Xuan thinks the price could be as high as $600 per ton on average and high-quality varieties that can be sold at $700 a ton.

The professor said India’s sudden export ban will “create big impacts” on importing countries because they cannot find replacing rice shipments from countries with small supply.

Therefore, Vietnam and Thailand will be their next destinations. He forecast that Vietnam’s export turnover in the second half of this year could increase dramatically.

The director of a rice export company in Can Tho said that in July, the company’s rice export orders increased by 20% from the previous month and by 30% compared to the same period last year.

“Two days after the news that India banned rice exports, many buyers have asked us to sign them long-term contracts to ensure supply, but we’re still considering the offer,” said the director.

He added that in the first half of this year, the company’s rice export price increased by 22% over the same period last year.

After the ban, he forecasted that export prices could increase by 30-40% compared to last year.

The Rice Exporters Association says that rice is a staple for more than 3 billion people, and nearly 90% of the water-intensive crop is produced in Asia, where the El Nino weather pattern usually brings lower rainfall. Global prices are already hovering at their highest level in 11 years.

According to official data, India’s rice shipments reached a record 22.2 million tons in 2022, more than the combined shipments of the world’s next four biggest exporters of the grain – Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan and the U.S. India exports rice to more than 140 countries.

Nguyen Duy Thuan, CEO of Loc Troi Group, agrees that India’s ban on rice exports is an opportunity for rice-exporting countries and that Vietnam can take advantage of this opportunity to act as a sustainable rice supply source for the international food market.

However, he noted that Vietnamese rice still has many challenges to face in terms of quality and export scale.

“In particular, farmers are yet to have access to high-quality varieties and therefore the rice yield has not reached the optimal level,” Thuan said.

Meanwhile, their farming techniques are still limited, resulting in many fertilizers and pesticides, affecting the rice’s quality and the environment.

In addition, the large-scale management capacity of Vietnam’s rice industry is still limited, Thuan added.

Thuan suggested that Vietnamese rice needs to improve quality and traceability in the supply chain to gain trust from consumers and regulators.

Professor Xuan said the government needs to take specific actions to monitor planting areas and create favorable legal corridors to support businesses.

“At the moment, in order to secure a large rice output for export, businesses need to associate long-term cooperation with traders and farmers, and ensure benefits for them,” Xuan said.

With import partners, businesses should ask them to sign long-term contracts to ensure stable export activities and also help farmers feel more secure in production.

Forecasting for this year’s supply, Xuan said that Vietnam has quite favorable weather and the yield could be high. He said that Vietnam can produce nine million tons of rice this year.

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development shows that rice exports in the first six months reached 4.27 million tons in volume and $2.3 billion in value, up 22.2% and 34.7%, respectively against the same period last year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has raised its forecast for Vietnam’s rice exports 2023 to 7.2 million tons, up from 7.05 million tons in 2022. Vietnam will rank third in the world in rice exports this year, after India and Thailand.
