  • Cooking gas prices up 3%

    Cooking gas prices up 3%

Cooking gas prices rose on Thursday in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern localities, with a 12-liter cylinder now costing VND438,000 (US$17.78), 3.06% higher than before.

This is the second increase since November after prices fell for six months in a row from May.

Global rates have gone up by 1.56% to $650 per ton as demand for heating surges amid winter, according to local distributor Saigon Petro.

In Vietnam, domestic supply meets only around 60% of the demand, which means prices are partially dependent on global rates.

  • Johnnie Walker releases Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas

Johnnie Walker releases Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas

Johnnie Walker Blue Label needs no introduction. For 30 years it has existed as the standard in ultra-premium blended scotch. The juice is drawn from some of the finest casks in Diageo’s massive stockpile of malt and grain. Its elegant bottle, with gently sloping shoulders, is immediately recognized along the top shelf of any stylish bar or cocktail lounge. And now that bottle is about to get a special redesign in honor of the upcoming Lunar New Year. Here’s everything you need to know about the seasonal release.

The first thing to note is that the liquid inside the bottle is, in fact, the same liquid that master blender Emma Walker and her team consistently bring to the standard Blue Label offering. In other words, you can expect a plum-like sweetness to the nose and a rich and nutty mouthfeel that promotes vanilla and pepper spice from mid-palate through the finish line. It’s a balanced expression carrying characteristics from all four major regions of scotch production: Highland, Lowland, Speyside and Islay (sorry, Campbeltown, but you’re going to have to sit this one out)

Separating this limited edition from the standard release is its presentation. Both the bottle and its case feature colorful, vivid artistry courtesy of Shanghai-based designer Angel Chen. Across all this art a certain animal assumes center stage. And as 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, you already know who’s the star of the show.

But there’s a touch more brand symbolism layered on top. The rabbits are depicted prancing about mountainous peaks, which Chen incorporated to echo the motto of Johnnie Walker: Keep Walking. And as a happy coincidence, the rabbit also signifies longevity in traditional Asian culture. An apt icon for the blended label which celebrated its 200th anniversary back in 2020.

“There’s a defiant energy to my illustrations which bring to life the vibrant spirit of the rabbit as it leaps across the design,” adds Chen, who studied fashion in the prestigious Central Saint Martin College of Art of London. “It symbolizes how we need to keep moving forward, spreading goodness throughout the year to come.”

Chen goes on to specify that she consulted with Walker when looking for inspiration. Those results are now sitting proudly on shelves nationwide, retailing for $275 a bottle. That gives you plenty of time to be ready for the gift giving traditions of the Chinese New Year, which begins on January 22nd, 2023.

And for those seeking something different inside the bottle, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas is a sensible place to start. It’s the fifth installment in the brand’s ongoing series dedicated to shuttered distilleries. This one contains a blend of juices from the eponymous facility—which formerly sat on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal—along with treasured liquid from Brora and Cambus. Creamy on the tongue, with a whisper of smoke in the fade, it’s currently selling for $370.

Retail Food Group reports robust sales, plans expansion in 16 countries

Customer visits to stores have grown by 20.6percentt during the quarter to date, although staffing shortages are an ongoing issue for many outlets.

To alleviate operational pressures, the company says it has launched a baker recruitment program in partnership with the state-based TAFEs to create career opportunities.

  • Google changes some chimes for its RCS powered Messages app for Android

Google changes some chimes for its RCS powered Messages app for Android

Google has been spiffing up its Messages app for Android. Last month, it revealed a new icon for the app, and now there are new chimes for sent and received messages. You can change the sound that plays when you get an incoming message. Go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Default notification sound. Tap on the top box, and you’ll see a list of sounds you can pick as the one you will hear to alert you of an incoming message. Be sure to hit “save” on the screen’s upper right after making your selection.
But even though you can choose the sound that will play to herald an incoming message, the Messages app determines the sound that will play for incoming and outgoing messages when a thread is open. After going through testing for several weeks, Google has replaced the old incoming, and outgoing messages chime with shorter and softer sounds.

Other changes on the way include the ability of the Rich Communication Service (RCS) platform found in Google Messages to allow users to react using any emoji they want to use rather than choose from the limited number include the ability of the Rich Communication Service (RCS) platforms found in Google Messages to allow users to react using any emoji they want to use rather than choose from the limited number of seven
A sent message will show a small circle with a checkmark inside while a delivered message will show two circles each with a checkmark inside. A message that has been read will still have the two circles with the checkmarks, but the inside of the circle will be colored in. This smells like a server-side update that will require Google to flip the switch on its end to disseminate the update; there is nothing that you can do about it on your end to make it arrive faster.
Hey! We should also point out that if you have an Android phone and you want the features of RCS which including the ability to send longer messages, higher quality video and images, get read receipts, typing indicators, and use emoji reactions, you need to dump the carrier-based Messages app you’re currently using (like Verizon Messages for example) and download Google Messages found in the Play Store.
  • Low-quality rice imports to be restricted

Low-quality rice imports to be restricted

The Ministry of Industry and Trade is drafting a decree on rice trade to limit the import of low-quality grain.

The volume of low-grade rice imported from India has surged due to low vietnaprices and zero import tax under the ASEAN-India Free Trade Area, potentially affecting Vietnam’s own rice production and food security.

Last year Vietnam imported a million tons of rice from various countries, including over 72% from India, according to ministry statistics.

The low-quality grain, including broken, imported from India is mainly used to make noodles, cakes, animal feed, beer, and liquor.

Vietnam, which exports 6-6.5 million tons of mainly high-grade rice annually to 156 countries and territories, had imported only around 5,000 tons of Indian rice in 2019, according to the ministry.

Pham Thai Binh, general director of Trung An Hi-tech Farming Joint Stock Company, said “Vietnamese farmers’ income is still very precarious. Instead of importing low-quality rice, enterprises can buy rice in the domestic market, helping increase selling prices and farmers’ income.”

According to the draft decree, if rice import volumes increase sharply, potentially affecting domestic production, they will be restricted. Besides, rice traders face stiffer penalties for failure to make quarterly and annual reports on exports and inventories as required.

Masan receives $600-mln foreign syndicated loan

Conglomerate Masan Group has received a syndicated loan of US$600 million at 6.7% interest from international financial institutions.

The five-year loan was arranged by BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, HSBC, and Standard Chartered Bank from a consortium of 37 financial institutions.

Masan said improved business results in the consumer and retail segments have made it easier to access foreign loans though borrowing in U.S. dollars would admittedly entail greater foreign exchange risks.

Last weekend, before obtaining the loan, it issued bonds worth VND1.7 trillion ($68.5 million) also with a five-year maturity.

The company said it has paid debts and interest due this year of over VND6.9 trillion and prepaid debts of VND6.66 trillion due next year.

Masan operates Win Mart, the largest consumer retail chain in Vietnam, and has a majority stake in Phuc Long beverage chain and interests in tungsten mining.

According to a recent report by HSBC Global Research, Vietnam is set to become the tenth-largest global consumer market in 2030, overtaking Turkey, Thailand and Britain.

Vietnam gold price drops despite global gain

Prices of gold bars branded SJC on Wednesday decreased 0.15% from the previous day to VND67.1 million ($2,722.11) per tael.

But gold ring prices went up 0.28% to VND54.15 million per tael. A tael is equal to 37.5 grams or 1.2 ounces.

Global spot gold was up 0.1% at $1,751.89 per ounce, aided by a dip in the U.S. dollar, with investors largely focusing on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech for insights into the U.S. central bank’s monetary policy path.

Powell’s speech is the main focus for the market, said Edward Meir, an analyst with ED&F Man Capital Markets.

“If Powell takes a hawkish stance, the dollar will strengthen and gold will move lower, probably back to the $1,745 level. But if he sounds more conciliatory, gold could move up to the $1,780 level.”

Meanwhile, top gold consumer, China reported a slight drop in new Covid cases for Nov. 29, the National Health Commission said.

Gold needs a strong China as it drives risk appetite and could bolster jewelry demand, and bullion could gain if China’s health authorities provide some clear signals that they are close to tweaking their zero-Covid policy, Edward Moya, senior analyst with OANDA, said in a note.

  • Samsung might be expanding its self-service repair program to include more devices

Samsung might be expanding its self-service repair program to include more devices

The topic of self-repair is, thankfully, an increasingly developing one. Tech manufacturers are starting to open up more and more to it thanks to the push enthusiasts, governments, and eco-activists are constantly engaging in.

As one of the most successful and large contributors to the mobile tech scene, Samsung has its self-service repair program, which it announced back in March this year. Given its relatively recent start, however, the program does not include that many devices yet, and the tech giant has plenty of space to expand this initiative.

Currently, the supported products are the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21, and Galaxy Tab S7+. Yes, only these three are among the massively colorful gamut of gadgets Samsung has in its arsenal. However, a recently patented trademark filing revealed a potential expansion of this list to include other types of Samsung tech such as earbuds and wearables.

Samsung has a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) dubbed “Self Repair Assistant,” which is the name of an upcoming computer app that would assist users of Samsung devices to self-repair their devices, maintain them, and help with self-installation. The patent says that the app will offer guidance, information, and easy access to replacement parts for the supported devices.

Currently, Samsung has a partnership with iFixit, which takes care of all of these services. However, this patent implies that this partnership might soon end if Samsung goes along with the launch of the Self-Repair Assistant.

Suffice to say, this is some great news for passionate DYI enthusiasts who like to take care of and repair their own devices. That being said, nothing is certain until Samsung makes an official announcement or statement about this app and service, so don’t get your hopes up just yet. Given that this is becoming a hotter topic by the minute, though, there are good grounds for speculation that we will see a launch in the future.
