UOB Launches Platform for Energy Efficiency Projects

The platform will be launched first in Singapore, with subsequent roll-outs in Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

UOB is launching an integrated financing platform U-Energy to drive the development and adoption of energy efficiency projects for buildings and homes, as part of its Smart City Sustainable Finance Framework.

The bank highlighted that buildings and construction projects globally account for 38 percent of carbon emissions and that this is a key area to address to meet Singapore’s target of reducing carbon emissions by 36 percent from the 2005 levels by 2030.

Building owners, energy service companies, and homeowners can reduce an average of 20 percent in energy consumption by tapping on its green financing for energy efficiency projects under U-Energy, UOB said.

UOB noted that building owners and homeowners often lack financing support and the expertise to find the right energy service companies.

At launch, the platform will have nine energy service companies that customers can tap for energy efficiency projects, such as chiller and air conditioning efficiency, installing solar panels on rooftops, switching to LED lights, optimizing energy and power management systems, and changing the building façade to reflect direct sunlight to reduce heat absorption, as well as replacing elevators with energy-regeneration technology.

UOB previously launched integrated financing platforms for solar energy and electric vehicles under the bank’s Smart City Sustainable Finance Framework

  • YouTube Music Wear OS app now supports older smartwatches

YouTube Music Wear OS app now supports older smartwatches

Google revealed last month that it will eventually bring some of its apps reserved for Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 to other smartwatches. One of these apps, YouTube Music has finally made its debut on Wear OS 2 smartwatches powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipsets.

Initially added to a range of smartwatches powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4100 and 4100+ chipsets like the new Gen 6 smartwatches from Fossil and Michael Kors, Mobvoi’s TicWatch Pro 3 GPS, TicWatch Pro 3 Cellular/LTE, and TicWatch E3, the new YouTube Music app is now available for older smartwatches running Wear OS 2.

The YouTube Music Wear OS app has been updated in the Google Play Store and it’s now available for at least two older smartwatches: Moto 360 and TAG Heuer Connected.

Despite the fact that its availability is rather limited, it’s safe to assume that more smartwatch models will be added to the supported list in the coming days (if not already). If your smartwatch is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset, then it might be a good idea to look for an update on your wearable device or phone.

Keep in mind that while the new YouTube Music app will let you download playlists for offline listening without your phone, the feature requires a YouTube Music Premium subscription.

Volvo Car India Announces Lifetime Parts Warranty Scheme

Volvo Car India announced a new “customer lifetime parts warranty” scheme across its model range. Under the new scheme, parts bought after the standard period of warranty and installed at an authorized workshop will carry a lifetime warranty and will be applicable on genuine parts bought from October 1, 2021. The coverage period begins on the date of purchase of the part and remains till the time the ownership of the car does not change. However, the scheme will lapse when the ownership changes. Under this scheme, both parts and the labor costs are covered. The initiative has been taken to provide customers reassurance on aftersales services given the high spare parts and replacement cost in luxury cars.

Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director, Volvo Car India said, “It is for the first time in India that such an initiative has been offered to the luxury customers. This is a unique offer in the automotive industry that gives the customer carefree and secure car ownership. In the unlikely event of customers requiring a part changed for their car, the company will give a lifetime warranty on the part. The warranty commences on the date of purchase of the part and will follow the combination of car and car owner. If the car has a new registered owner, the warranty will end.”

Moreover, the company also reaffirmed that any genuine Volvo part which will require repair or replacement because of material or manufacturing defect will be repaired or replaced free of charge by an authorized dealer. However, the scheme is not applicable of normal wear and tear of parts, consumables, batteries, accessories, and Software which is not associated with a hardware replacement. Also, parts replaced under new car warranty or extended warranty or goodwill warranty would not be covered under this scheme.

Intel, Samsung to resume full production next month

Units of electronics manufacturing giants Intel and Samsung are set to fully resume operations by the end of November after months of social distancing-triggered production disruption.

Saigon Hi-Tech Park is helping its tenants, many of which are currently running at about 70 percent capacity, to resume full operations next month, the park’s deputy manager Le Bich Loan said in an interview.

The park is home to Samsung, Intel, and Nidec Sankyo Corp, a maker of magnetic card readers and micromotors.

Nidec is also looking to resume full capacity by the end of next month, according to Saigon Giai Phong.

Many companies operating in Saigon Hi-Tech Park lost about 20 percent of their export orders in July and August, Loan said.

In the last several months HCMC has been imposing various levels of social distancing, which restricted the operation of factories.

The city started resuming activities on Oct. 1.

  • Asos CEO, chairman resigning

    Asos CEO, chairman resigning

Asos chief executive Nick Beighton unexpectedly announced that he is to step down with immediate effect from the U.K.-based online fashion retailer this morning, with Asos warning that the supply chain crisis and rising costs will hit its profits.

The fast-fashion retailer, which has been one of the chief beneficiaries of the online shopping boom during the Covid pandemic – with revenues up by one fifth and profits rising by a quarter in the year to the end of August – said that the global supply chain shortage, tough comparables and this summer’s travel restrictions all affected sales.

And profits could be off by as much as 40%, as the company pledged to push for international growth to take sales from $5.5 billion annually to $9.6 billion within four years.

Asos said Beighton and the board had agreed that it was “the right time” for him to go after 12 years with the business and the past six of those in the role of chief executive, although no reason was offered for his departure. Synonymous with the brand, Beighton was expected to lead a revival next year and news of his sudden departure saw shares off by 15% in early trading before starting to recover.

Since its peak valuation in March of this year, shares are down circa 60%, which no doubt played its part in the company’s change of direction, which it hopes will see the doubling in size of its combined U.S. and Europe business and the addition of at least $1.36 billion to its own-brand sales.

Asos chairman, Adam Crozier, who is to stand down next month to take over as chairman at U.K. telecoms giant BT, said: “Asos’s management and board have spent considerable time over recent months developing and validating a clear strategic plan to accelerate international growth, building on Asos’s undoubted strength in the U.K.

Ian Dyson will become the next Asos chairman, chief financial officer Mat Dunn will take on the role of chief operating officer and will lead the day-to-day business, while Katy Mecklenburgh will act as interim CFO.

In addition, Dyson will succeed Adam Crozier as non-executive chairman, effective November 29, for a three-year term, while a search has started for a successor to Beighton.

The company, which like many other U.K. businesses has been hit by the double blow of a global supply chain crisis and the impact of Brexit, said: “Industry-wide supply chain pressures are expected to continue through the first half, resulting in longer lead times and constrained supply from a number of our partner brands.”

Asos added that there would be “notable cost headwinds” including inbound freight costs, labor cost inflation, outbound delivery costs and Brexit duty, although it predicted a recovery beginning in 2022.

The company, which reported profits of $241.5 million in the year to the end of August, said it expects adjusted profits before tax to fall between $150 million and $191 million for its next financial year. This is below analysts’ expectations of $254 million.

The retailer said it achieved particularly strong sales growth of 36% in the U.K., while sales in the U.S., E.U. and the rest of the world increased by 21%,15% and 6% respectively.

Beighton is credited with helping turn Asos into a global online fashion powerhouse and recently the company bought the Topshop brand, following the collapse of billionaire Philip Green’s Arcadia empire.

Of his departure, Beighton said: “I have enjoyed every moment of my 12 years at Asos. When I joined, there were fewer than 200 people and we had annual sales of around $300 million. I leave a business reporting turnover of almost $5.5 billion, with more than 3,000 fantastic ‘Asos-ers’ delivering for 26 million customers in 200 markets around the world.”

  • Coffee buyers face losses as Colombia farmers fail to deliver

Coffee buyers face losses as Colombia farmers fail to deliver

Coffee farmers in Colombia, the world’s No. 2 arabica producer, have failed to deliver up to 1 million bags of beans this year or nearly 10% of the country’s crop, leaving exporters, traders, and roasters facing steep losses, industry sources said.

World coffee prices have soared 55% this year, mainly due to adverse weather in top producer Brazil, prompting Colombian farmers to default on sales clinched when prices were much lower in order to re-sell the coffee at higher rates.

“Traders are getting defaulted on, it’s a mess. If the drought continues (in Brazil), 300 cents (per lb of coffee) is possible. It’s going to be mayhem,” said a dealer at a global agricultural commodities trade house.

He said leading global roasters are planning to change the branding on their ‘single-origin Colombia’ coffees due to sourcing problems.

Delivery defaults in a major producer like Colombia can exacerbate price spikes on world markets, although these would be temporary because the coffee ultimately exists and will weigh on markets once it is re-sold.

Colombian farmers say they will deliver the coffee later this year or next but buyers are unconvinced.

Many are opting to see losses now and write the purchases off as defaults rather than wait and risk even bigger losses if farmers still don’t deliver next year and prices rise further, according to a senior trader at another global trade house.

He said several global trade houses are looking at losses of $8-10 million each on undelivered coffee, while Colombia’s coffee growers federation FNC, which represents farmers but also accounts for 20% of the country’s 12.5 million bags of annual coffee exports, faces higher losses.

“There was easily 1 million bags of forwarding (Colombian coffee sales) done before the market started rallying mid-May,” said the senior trader. “If you work for a multinational (trade house) your boss will say come on, we have to take the hit.”

Delivery defaults in a rallying coffee market are a huge issue for commodity exporters and traders who often hedge physical purchases by taking short positions in the futures market, causing them to sustain steep losses as prices rise.

Usually, traders would be able to sell the physical coffee they are owed at current lofty rates in order to offset their futures market loss, but in the case of a default, they can’t.

Defaults can also force traders to purchase supplies pre-sold to roasters at a loss in the pricey spot market.

FNC head Roberto Velez confirmed that Colombia is facing widespread defaults.

“I can tell you there are few Colombian exporters not suffering (from defaults). All the major trade houses and also the federation as a major exporter, we’re all suffering (losses),” he said.

“When a grower doesn’t deliver, the whole chain gets stuck losing money,” he added.

Traders said the federation has given Colombian farmers at least another year to deliver the coffee – a move that could force the industry body to approach the government for bail-out funds if the farmers still don’t deliver in time.

A senior Columbia-based coffee trader with Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) left the company in the wake of losses, two sources with knowledge of the matter said.

LDC said it does not comment on organizational changes except in relation to executives.

“Companies will be in trouble with (the scale of the losses), big guys will change their team, but smaller guys will go bankrupt,” said a senior trader.

He added major local Colombian exporter La Meseta has been hard hit by farmer defaults and is struggling to make good on its supply deals with international roasters, leaving them exposed to losses.

Selling coffee forward in Colombia has become popular in the last few years, but up until this year, the move had mostly worked out in favour of farmers as world prices drifted lower so farmers received better prices for their coffee on delivery, not worse.

About 550,000 Colombian families make their living growing coffee and the Andean country is the largest producer of the washed arabica grade on which benchmark futures contracts on the ICE exchange are based.

  • Page Zoom is a new accessibility feature in Chrome for Android

Page Zoom is a new accessibility feature in Chrome for Android

Google is working on a new Page Zoom accessibility feature for its Chrome browser on mobile devices.

It appears that the reasoning behind this new feature is that text scaling on mobile devices produces variable results and often causes bugs. There’s a long thread on Chrome support forums concerning the issue, and it seems that Google developers have listened to the users and implemented the new Page Zoom feature.

Page Zoom works much like the zoom feature in the desktop version of Chrome. Once you choose a zoom level for a certain page it will be stored in the browser and next time you open the same page Chrome will automatically adjust the zoom level for you.

The feature is already available in Chrome Canary, and will probably roll out to Chrome for Android with the next stable release.

  • Apple wants you to install iOS 15.0.2, iPadOS 15.0.2 and watchOS 8.0.1

Apple wants you to install iOS 15.0.2, iPadOS 15.0.2 and watchOS 8.0.1

On Monday, Apple released iOS 15.0.2, iPadOS 15.0.2 and watchOS 8.0.1. The update for both the iPhone and iPad fixes a couple of bugs related to the Find My app. It also includes a major security fix for a flaw that Apple says is already under attack by hackers.

Discovered by an anonymous researcher, CVE-2021-30883 “may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” Keep in mind that CVE-2021-30883 could allow an attacker to exploit the IOMobileFrameBuffer and “execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges” and take over your device.

The bug fixes cited by Apple in iOS 15.0.2. will take care of the following issues:

    • Photos saved to your library from Messages could be deleted after removing the associated thread or message.
    • iPhone Leather Wallet with MagSafe may not connect to Find My.
    • AirTag might not appear in the Find My Items tab.
    • CarPlay may fail to open audio apps or disconnect during playback.
    • Device restore or update may fail when using Finder or iTunes for iPhone 13 models.

Apple drops iOS 15.02 to add a needed security patch and some bug exterminations

The iPadOS 15.0.2 update helps users with the following problems:

    • Photos saved to your library from Messages could be deleted after removing the associated thread or message.
    • AirTag might not appear in the Find My Items tab.
    • Device restore or update may fail when using Finder or iTunes for iPad mini (6th generation).

And watchOS 8.0.1 helps patch these issues for Series 3 users:

Apple releases an update to watchOS 8.0.1 beta

Software update progress may not be displayed accurately for some Apple Watch Series 3 users

Accessibility settings may not have been available for some Apple Watch Series 3 users.

To install iOS 15.0.2. go to Settings > General > Software Update. Follow the same directions for iOS 15.0.2. For watchOS 8.0.1, open the Watch app on your iPhone and tap General > Software Update. Make sure your iPhone is at least 50% charged and that it is connected to Wi-Fi. The handset must be within close range of the Apple Watch in order for the update to download and install.

Apple originally released iOS 15 on September 20th and followed that up with iOS 15.0.1 which exterminated a bug preventing iPhone users wearing a face mask from unlocking their devices using Face ID. With iOS 15.0.1, users wearing an unlocked Apple Watch that they have signed into can unlock their handsets without using their passcodes.

The company is beta testing iOS 15.1 which will return SharePlay to the operating system. SharePlay allows users to share video and audio content with other FaceTime users on the same chat. It also allows users to store a digital copy of their vaccination card in Apple Wallet and adds certain features to the iPhone 13 Pro camera including ProRes. The latter compresses video but does so on a lossless basis.

All you need to know about ProRes is that it improves the quality of the videos you shoot with your iPhone. ProRes is available only for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. To enable ProRes, go to Settings > Camera > Formats > and enable the Apple ProRes toggle. Keep in mind that ProRes video capture will use plenty of your storage. Apple reminds users that one minute of 10-bit HDR ProRes uses 1.7 GB of storage for HD and 6 GB for 4K.

ProRes capture supports up to 30fps at 4K and up to 60fps at 1080p for iPhone 13 Pro devices with 256GB of storage and higher. Devices that top out at 128GB of storage are limited to 1080p capture at 30fps.

And with iOS 15.1, users will be able to disable the auto macro mode feature. This will allow users to turn off the feature that automatically enables a macro shot when using the ultra-wide-angle lens to zoom in real tight on a subject.

  • Flash Coffee opens Singapore flagship

    Flash Coffee opens Singapore flagship

Singapore-based Flash Coffee has announced plans to rapidly expand across Asia after securing $15m investment from investors including DX Ventures, Global Founders Capital, and Conny & Co. In a press release, the coffee chain said it intended to debut in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam in 2021.

First launching in January 2020, Flash Coffee currently operates 50 locations across Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. Despite opening amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the company reports the majority of its stores are profitable.

Flash Coffee says it is currently opening three new outlets per week and plans to increase the rate to 10 stores per week in order to achieve its target of 300 additional stores across the Asia by end of 2021.

“Our dream is to have a Flash Coffee every 500 metres in all major Asian cities,” said Flash Coffee CEO David Brunier. “We will also build a regional HQ in Singapore and expand our regional tech hub in Jakarta to 50 people to support our vision of fully leveraging technology to improve customer experience, proactively drive growth and significantly increase operational efficiency.”

The value-focused coffee chain deploys a similar ‘new retail’ model popularised by China’s Luckin Coffee. Customers can order drinks for pick-up via an app and online, with the brand stating its intention to ‘digitise today’s offline-dominated coffee industry’. Like Luckin Coffee, Flash Coffee is also seeking to catalyse growing demand for premium coffee and aspirational hospitality concepts among Asia’s growing young middle-income demographic.

There is undoubtedly vast untapped potential for domestic and international coffee chains alike across East Asia. World Coffee Portal data shows the region’s branded coffee chain market grew 5.1% in 2020 to exceed 74,500 outlets, with 13 out of 17 markets achieving outlet growth during the period.

China is, however, curiously absent from Flash Coffee’s intended growth markets. East Asia’s second-largest branded coffee shop market after South Korea grew 2.1% to exceed 21,400 outlets in 2020, with consumers already highly familiar with app-based transactions, pick-up and beverage delivery. 86% of Chinese consumers surveyed by World Coffee Portal in 2020 indicated they have previously ordered coffee for delivery, with more than half doing so 2-3 times per week.

    Gold price hits 12-month high

Vietnam’s gold price climbed to a 12-month high Monday even as global prices dropped.

Prices at state-owned Saigon Jewelry Company rose 0.05 percent from Saturday to VND57.98 million ($2,552.79) per tael Monday. A tael equals 37.5 grams or 1.2 ounces.

Other companies sold their gold 0.17 percent higher at VND58 trillion, a 12-month high.

Vietnam’s gold price is now VND10 million higher than global rates, widening from VND8 million a month ago.

Global gold prices were subdued Monday over fears the U.S. Federal Reserve would start paring its stimulus this year despite Friday’s weak job data.

Spot gold inched 0.1 percent lower to $1,755.68 per ounce.

Spot gold may bounce into the $1,763-$1,768 range, before resuming its fall towards a support of $1,724, according to Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

  • Automate data center network to simplify, modernize operations

Automate data center network to simplify, modernize operations

Cloud-Ready Data Center solutions from Juniper Networks enable businesses to simplify operations and experience with a modern, automated data center.

Vietnam is one of 10 emerging markets in the global data center sector, with an impressive growth rate of $858 million in 2020, and is predicted to have a compound growth rate of nearly 15 percent annually by 2026.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnamese businesses in the fields of finance, health, retail and consulting are tending to shift data to cloud computing solutions for its data management platform to keep pace with global technology. As a result, there is an unprecedented wave of data center investment.

To meet the increasing demand for data center solutions, Juniper Networks has made significant investments to its Cloud-Ready Data Center portfolio providing reliable and secure products, including Juniper Apstra System, QFX Series Switches, PTX Series Routers, MX Series Universal Routing Platforms, SRX Series Services Gateways and Contrail Networking to help organizations save time and reduce costs for the deployment of complex data center networks.

New era of automated data center operations with Juniper Apstra

Juniper Apstra System offers a new way of thinking about data center network operations. The software enables users to automate the entire network lifecycle in a single system, easing their adoption of network automation.

A key principle of the Juniper Apstra System is that optimum operations start with the best design. The system ties the architect’s design to everyday operations with a single source of truth, continuous validation, and powerful analytics and root cause identification. By automating Day 2 operations, the software raises efficiency and results by providing visibility and insights, incident management, change management, compliance and audit, and maintenance and updates.

For fabric management of EVPN-VXLAN and IP fabrics, the system’s Apstra Fabric Conductor toolset automates each aspect of design, deployment, and operation. The toolset reduces the time from design to deployment from months or weeks to days or even hours, with validated templates and ZTP that sets up the network for you. When problems occur, the same toolset averts outages with predictive insights, shortens time to resolution, and diminishes human error with change control and fast, all-network rollback.

Juniper’s switching, routing, and security platforms stand apart in their robust capabilities and scale, including complete EVPN-VXLAN, IP fabric, and threat-prevention capabilities. In particular, Juniper’s QFX, PTX, and ACX Series continue to lead the industry with best-in-class throughput and scalability, including 400G interfaces, renowned routing, the open programmability of the Junos OS, and comprehensive EVPN-VXLAN and IP fabric capabilities.

In terms of network policy and control, Juniper Contrail Networking provides dynamic end-to-end networking policy and control for any cloud, any workload, and any deployment, from a single user interface. It translates abstract workflows into specific policies, simplifying the orchestration of virtual overlay connectivity across all environments.

With Juniper Connected Security, users can safeguard their applications, data, and infrastructure across all network connection points. Also, users can use contrail networking to consistently define, manage, enforce, and view policies across the entire application-oriented overlay network from a central location.

One of the most impressive cases is three-time NBA champion, Miami Heat. Since 2010, Miami Heat has been using and consistently investing in Juniper’s latest innovations including QFX5100, MX960, EX4300, SRX5400 and JSA Virtual Appliance to modernize the arena and build a network for media-hungry fans. Miami Heat was the first NBA team to offer ticketless entry for fans, and the digital innovation team is constantly adding to that success.

The Heat also tapped into Juniper SRX5400 Services Gateway to protect the data center and enterprise edge with next-generation firewall services and Juniper Secure Analytics to monitor security events in real-time. Working together, the team of advanced Juniper solutions let Miami Heat innovate with new experiences without worrying about what the technology can handle.

Additionally, Net One Systems, a leading independent Japanese integrator, also relies on Juniper Networks Contrail Enterprise Multicloud to orchestrate its multi-cloud environment. As hundreds of customers rely on Net One to operate and manage their cloud environments and when the number of customers have grown, their diverse needs have put a strain on network operations.

Net One finds managing multiple cloud services more difficult with each new customer and growing complexity created challenges in building, establishing, and efficiently operating cloud services. However, with the assistance of Contrail Enterprise Multicloud, Net One can create seamless end-to-end multitenant environments by separating from physical networks using overlay models and managing tenants from a centralized controller.

To further reaffirm Juniper’s strength in providing businesses with secure, automated, and AI-driven solutions, last year, Juniper Networks was named as the leader in “Magic Quadrant for Data Center and Cloud Networking”. This is Gartner’s latest report evaluating data center and cloud networking hardware and software for enterprises that procure and manage their own data center networking infrastructures for installation on-premises or in colocation facilities.

The report mentioned Juniper Networks has a strong portfolio of hardware and software, with feature depth and excellent automation capabilities, which can meet the technical needs of nearly all cases in the market. Furthermore, Juniper’s roadmap to apply AI to improve data center networking efficiency also aligns with the emerging needs of customers.

“We believe our recognition as a leader for the third year in a row comes from Juniper’s proven attributes, including automated fabrics, AI-driven insight, best-in-class security and scalable 400G designs. Waze launches soothing experience to combat negative effects of driving

We live in a world where driving has become an activity that often affects our mental health. Traffic is probably in top three reasons for stress, and can many times lead to much worse effects, including back pain, depression, and even blood pressure.

To help combat these negative effects of driving, Waze launched a new Headspace experience that is meant to help drivers learn “how to find more joy and meaning on the road.” Headspace is a new Waze theme that provides users with custom navigation prompts from the mindfulness teacher and Director of Meditation, Eve Lewis Prieto.

There are five moods that can be selected when listening to the Headspace experience: Aware, Bright, Hopeful, Joyful, and Open. Also, the new theme allows users to swap out the in-car icon with an air balloon.

Equally important is the fact that drivers can stream a custom Spotify playlist with music and content from Headspace, which is also available via the Waze Audio Player. The Headspace experience is rolling out today and is available for a limited time in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

If you’re looking for a soothing driving experience, you can activate the new theme by tapping My Waze to find the “Drive with Headspace” banner.
