    Harley-Davidson’s New Engine Revealed

Harley-Davidson is working on a new liquid-cooled engine that is expected to power a range of new middleweight models including the production versions of the Harley-Davidson Pan America adventure tourer, Harley-Davidson Custom 1250 and the Harley-Davidson Streetfighter. The engine designs filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office reveals quite a few details about the new engine, which is expected to be used in several new models to be launched between 2020 and 2022. The new engine will be a 60-degree v-twin which will be fully liquid-cooled, with a compact crankcase and transmission.

The design images of the new engine shows mounting points behind the transmission and on either side of the cylinder heads, and the concept designs of the upcoming models also suggested that the engine will act as a stressed member of the chassis. The latest design images don’t indicate any engine displacement, but Harley-Davidson has already announced that engine sizes will vary from 500 cc to 1250 cc. But these lack the traditional pushrods and will have double overhead cams.

The original concept images of the upcoming Harley-Davidson models reveal that the engines on each model are slightly different. The Custom 1250 had different coloured covers for the heads for a two-toned effect. The Streetfighter 975 also had a two-toned engine but with a difference in colours. The latest design filings are a mix of the engine types seen on the concept images. The head covers and cylinder covers are all separate pieces on the engine design images. At least three new models, showcased as concept images, will be launched in the next few years. First up, will be the Harley-Davidson Pan America adventure tourer, which will likely be launched in 2020, as a 2021 model. Next up will be the Streetfighter, which is expected sometime later, followed by the Custom 1250.

  • Jeep Compass Sport Plus Launched In India

Jeep Compass Sport Plus Launched In India

The Tata Harrier has surely escalated the competition in the compact SUV segment and it has proved to be a strong product, especially at the price Tata Motors has launched it. The Jeep Compass is the obvious-first rival to the Harrier and the company has added a new Sport Plus variant to the range in a bid to compete against the Harrier. The Jeep Compass Sport Plus has been launched in India at ₹ 15.99 lakh for the petrol variant and ₹ 16.99 lakh for the diesel variant.

The Sport Plus variant of the Compass has been positioned above the base Sport variant and is more feature-rich. The added exterior kit includes 16-inch alloy wheels finished in silver, black roof rails and rear parking sensors. The rear windscreen, pillars and window fringes are also finished in black. The cabin of the Jeep Compass Sport Plus trim will be equipped with a 5.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dual-zone climate control which the base trim doesn’t get. We would have liked Jeep to also include the power folding wing mirrors which makes maneuvering through tight spots easy. However, safety kits such as dual front airbags, ABS, ESC and traction control are standard throughout the range.

Mechanically the Compass Sport Plus remains identical to the base variant. The diesel is powered by the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Multijet turbo motor which makes 172 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque and is mated to a six-speed gearbox as standard. The petrol is the 1.4-litre, four-cylinder MultiAir Turbo motor which develops 161 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque and is also offered with an automatic gearbox, while the six-speed manual is standard.

Other than the Harrier, the Jeep Compass Sport Plus will compete with the W4 variant of the Mahindra XUV500 and SX variant of the Hyundai Creta.

Revolt Motors To Launch India’s First A.I Enabled Motorcycle this Year

Electric mobility is the future and with India being one of the largest two-wheeler markets in the world, it holds immense potential for electric two-wheelers. And Revolt Motors, an up and coming EV startup, founded by Rahul Sharma, who is also the co-founder of Micromax mobile phones, looks to cash on this potential. Revolt Intellicorp is wholly owned by Rahul Sharma and the company has been setup on an investment of about ₹ 400 crore to ₹ 500 crore.

Revolt will be launching its first product, an electric and artificial intelligence enabled motorcycle in June 2019. The company is headquartered in Gurgaon; Revolt Motors has a manufacturing facility in Manesar, which has a capacity of 1.2 lakh units of electric motorcycles in the first phase, which is actually more than twice the size of the entire electric two-wheeler market. The company also has an in-house R&D team, which has worked on the new A.I enabled motorcycle for two years.

Rahul Sharma, Founder, Revolt Intellicorp Pvt. Ltd. said, “As a mechanical engineer by qualification, I always found mobility and the expanse of opportunities it offers, very intriguing. There is a colossal need for using technology to disrupt urban commute and make it cleaner and sustainable. I’m doing my bit and I feel this is the right time for every player operating in this space to come together for the greater good of our environment. My vision is to see every household in India have access to sustainable mobility.”

Coming to the motorcycle itself, Revolt is confident that it will be a game-changer in the Indian two-wheeler market. It will be fully electric, enabled with A.I and will have an embedded 4G LTE SIM as well. The product will have a range of about 150 kilometres on a single charge and will have a lithium-ion battery pack which can be swapped. The top-speed has been limited to 85 kmph. While the battery and the electric motor will be imported, the battery management system and the electronic control unit were designed in house.

The company will also offer innovative charging solutions when the EV is launched in June 2019. Delhi NCR will be the first market and Revolt Motors says that it will have online sales along with on-ground dealerships and experience centres as well. The company is of the idea that it has to grab double digit market share in the first few years of its operation and it is looking at the entire two-wheeler segment and not just electric two-wheeler space as its market.

  • Daimler Opens Mercedes-Benz Plant In Moscow Area

Daimler Opens Mercedes-Benz Plant In Moscow Area

German automaker Daimler officially opened a Mercedes-Benz factory near Moscow on Wednesday at a ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin, marking a rare foreign investment into Russia’s car industry. The plant in the town of Esipovo 40 kilometers north west of Moscow is the first in years to be opened by a foreign carmaker in Russia where investment into the once burgeoning auto industry dried up amid western sanctions and a stagnant economy.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Putin said the plant would produce 25,000 cars a year and that investment in the project had totaled 19 billion roubles ($291 million).

Putin said the factory, built after Daimler signed a deal with Russia’s authorities in early 2017, would employ almost 1,000 people.

Most global automakers opened plants in Russia in the first half of the 2000s, but after peaking in 2012 car sales slumped to a ten-year low of 1.42 million in 2016. The market is picking up again, and a total of 1.8 million cars were sold last year.

  • Ex-Nissan Chief Ghosn Rearrested In Tokyo

Ex-Nissan Chief Ghosn Rearrested In Tokyo

Former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn was rearrested early Thursday in Tokyo on fresh financial misconduct allegations, with the auto tycoon slamming his detention as “outrageous and arbitrary”.

Authorities arrested the 65-year-old less than a month after he was dramatically freed on bail following more than 100 days in detention. Local media said prosecutors had entered Ghosn’s temporary accommodation in central Tokyo early Thursday morning and that he left with them by car shortly afterwards.

An AFP reporter outside the home saw three men in dark suits guarding the entrance to the building’s car park and a police officer patrolling, as dozens of journalists gathered. Ghosn issued a statement through his representatives after the arrest calling it as “outrageous and arbitrary”.

“It is part of another attempt by some individuals at Nissan to silence me by misleading the prosecutors. Why arrest me except to try to break me? I will not be broken,” he said, insisting that he is innocent of the claims against him. Reports emerged Wednesday that prosecutors were weighing rearresting Ghosn as they investigate claims related to at least $32 million in Nissan funds transferred to a distributor in Oman.

According to a source familiar with the matter, some of this money is believed to have been used to buy a luxury boat for Ghosn and his family. The former high-flying executive already faces three charges of financial misconduct related to allegations he under-reported his compensation and sought to transfer losses to Nissan’s books.

He has denied any wrongdoing and took to Twitter for the first time Wednesday, using a newly created account that his spokespeople confirmed was authentic, to announce plans for a press conference.

“I’m getting ready to tell the truth about what’s happening. Press conference on Thursday, April 11,” said the tweet, sent in English and then Japanese.

    The ‘Razor’

Ghosn currently faces two separate charges of deferring his salary to the tune of nine billion yen ($81 million) and not revealing this in official documents to shareholders. The Brazil-born auto sector pioneer, widely credited with saving Nissan from the brink of bankruptcy, also faces a charge of seeking to shift personal investment losses onto Nissan’s books and then using company funds to pay a Saudi associate who stumped up collateral for him.

The case has been a rollercoaster ride of unexpected twists and turns from the moment Ghosn was first arrested at a Tokyo airport out of the blue on November 19.

He has since been re-arrested on multiple occasions over a series of allegations, employed a little-used article of Japanese law to force a day in court and emerged on bail dressed in a workman’s uniform and cap in a bizarre attempt to avoid the media.

Since his release on bail on March 6, he has kept scrupulously quiet despite daily attempts by local and international media to interview him. His lawyer Junichiro Hironaka, known as the “razor” for his mental sharpness, has done the talking for him, appearing twice in front of the foreign media to plead his client’s innocence.

In his latest appearance on Tuesday, Hironaka announced he had filed a petition with the Tokyo District Court so that Ghosn’s case would be heard separately from that of Nissan and his former right-hand man Greg Kelly. Nissan has been indicted alongside Ghosn, as they filed the shareholders’ documents that allegedly mis-stated the then chairman’s income.

Hironaka said this would not be a fair trial as Nissan has effectively sided with the prosecutors by providing them with documents they say show further malpractice.

    – ‘Trap’, ‘plot’ –

Under Ghosn’s management, Nissan recovered and formed a three-way alliance with Renault and Mitsubishi Motors that has become one of the world’s top-selling auto groups.

In an interview with AFP from his detention centre in January, Ghosn denounced a “trap” and a “plot” by Nissan prompted by opposition to his plans to bring the companies closer together.

He was removed as chairman by Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors almost immediately after his arrest. Renault was slower to react but Ghosn eventually himself resigned from the head of the French firm.

Ghosn’s arrest and a string of alleged financial misconduct has sparked questions over Nissan’s own corporate governance and the company established an independent body to propose changes to prevent a recurrence.

The advisory group suggested doing away with the vacant role of chairman and laid the blame for the lapse in governance at the feet of Ghosn.

The main cause of the misconduct was “the concentration of authority in Ghosn”, the group concluded.

“He created a situation in which it would be difficult to detect his pursuit of personal gain.”

  • BMW F 850 RS Patented In Brazil

BMW F 850 RS Patented In Brazil

BMW Motorrad has applied for a patent for the F 850 RS in Brazil with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INP). Yes! It spawns from the company’s F 850 GS motorcycle but while the GS is an off-road biased model, the F 850 RS will be a tarmac loving sport-touring machine, somewhat similar to the BMW S 1000 XR. The F 850 RS began life as the stunning 9Cento concept which was showcased in May 2018 at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy which had a rather sexy, head-turning design. In fact, the production version of the 9Cento concept was spied testing sometime in November 2018 and then, it was rumoured to be called the F 850 GT, but a leaked dealer brochure confirmed the name of the new motorcycle as the F 850 ₹

The patent image shows that the overall look and design of the F 850 RS will be quite similar to the 9Cento concept. And the engine on the F 850 RS will be the same as the one on the F 850 GS, which is a 853 cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled motor making 93 bhp of max power and 92 Nm of peak torque while being paired to a six-speed gearbox. Expect the engine to be tuned differently for on-road touring. Also, the RS could be wearing thicker on-road rubber with alloys instead of spoked rims and dual-purpose tyres that the F 850 GS is shod with. We expect the BMW F 850 RS to be unveiled at the 2019 EICMA Motorcycle Show in November this year. Once it is internationally launched, we expect BMW Motorrad to eventually bring the F 850 RS to India sometime later in 2020 as well.

  • 2019 BMW Z4 Teased Ahead Of Its India Launch

2019 BMW Z4 Teased Ahead Of Its India Launch

The all-new third-generation BMW Z4 was revealed globally last year and is one of the 12 new models which BMW has planned to launch in India this year. The new Z4 has also been spied before in India and the new teaser reaffirms it being one of the models in the pipeline. BMW India took to Twitter and Instagram to tease the third-generation Z4 and has hinted about its launch which could be sooner than you can guess and the company is planning to unfold it today.

The test mule which underwent the homologation process was the Z4 M40i variant which is most likely to be the one for India. It is powered by a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo, inline six-cylinder engine which churns out 340 bhp and takes 4.6 seconds to clock triple-digit speed. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph. The Z4 will also feature sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M-Sport brakes and an electronically controlled M-Sport differential in the rear-mounted transmission. The car also has 50-50 weight distribution.

The new BMW Z4 is quite close to its concept design and has retained the new conjoined Kidney Grille which we have also seen on the 8-Series. In fact, the fascia overall is related to quite an extent sporting the almost identical headlamp cluster with typical BMW daytime running lights. The rear of the car, however, is discrete and looks very similar to the outgoing model. The cabin is similar to what we have seen in the M-Sport variants of BMWs. You get a three-spoke steering wheel, a very typical BMW centre console and a central tunnel with a silver finish too. The silver or brushed accents also continue on the steering wheel and on the dashboard. You also get an all-digital instrument cluster panel.

The new BMW Z4 is expected to cost around ₹ 1 Crore and will take on an array of different drop tops. Obvious rivals for the Z4 are the Porsche 718 Boxster, the Jaguar F-Type 2.0 Roadster and the Mercedes-AMG SLC43. However, it will also go up against slightly more relaxed cabriolets like the C-Class cabriolet and the Audi A5 Cabriolet.

  • Hyundai’s Virtual Cockpit Concept Gets Steering-Mounted Touchscreens

Hyundai’s Virtual Cockpit Concept Gets Steering-Mounted Touchscreens

The Hyundai i30 with the new virtual cockpit comes with a new steering wheel that comes with wide bridges one either side to house the two vertical displays. The touchscreen offers the driver controls to the music system, menu and mode change among others. In fact, the display even comes with a new, freely configurable icon design for easier understanding and two actuator modules underneath the surface allowing for a stronger and more consistent haptic feedback which optimises the usability for the driver. Hyundai focused on improving the existing concept of touch displays with haptic feedback on the steering wheel, similar to the centre display. The centre display can be used to control the car’s features like climate control, speaker setting and much more.

As for the instrument cluster, it comes with a multi-layer display (MLD) that is claimed to come with a new, very natural way of attention control. Unlike regular displays, the MLD consists of two displays, which are stacked behind each other at a distance of 6mm that offer visual 3D effects – While one part of the graphic is shown on the front display and the other part on the rear display. In the area where the graphics overlap, the impression of an object in space is created. Regina Kaiser also said that “We are doing research on the learnability, intuition and potential driver distraction of the virtual cockpit.” In fact, the company study revealed that Hyundai’s new cockpit is significantly below the limits of the globally acknowledged motor vehicle safety associations AAM and NHTSA.

Hyundai says that to date, the company’s steering wheels and cockpits have undergone a major development process and the technology continues to evolve. “We are continuously working on new technologies that make our cars perfectly intuitive and user-friendly”, said Regina Kaiser. While the cockpit is still in the early prototype stage, the company says that it’s nonetheless an important milestone and fairly advanced compared to the existing technology, parts of which we’ll be seeing in some of the future models from Hyundai.
