  • On Instagram, you can now send and receive private Story likes without piling up unnecessary DMs

On Instagram, you can now send and receive private Story likes without piling up unnecessary DMs

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced on Twitter that Instagram is introducing a new feature called “Private Story Likes,” which allows Instagram users to like a Story without the platform sending a direct message to the Story’s author.

Before the Private Story Likes feature, to respond to a Story you could only send a direct message or an emoji reaction to the creator of the Story and when you reacted to someone’s Story, they always received a response in their DM inbox.

Users who have the Private Story Likes feature may now notice a new heart icon located between the Send Message field and the paper airplane sharing button when watching someone’s Story.

Also, the likes you receive or give on stories will be private and won’t have public counts, which means that only you will be able to see who liked your Story. If you want to see who liked your Story, you need to go to the viewer sheet of that particular Story, and there you will see a heart icon next to every viewer who liked your Story.

According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s idea for the Private Story Likes feature is for ‘people to express more support to each other’ and also to ‘clean up DMs a little bit.’ Adam Mosseri explained that Instagram’s goal is to make DMs more focused on conversations between you and your friends.

  • Ekata Protects 2.5 Billion Digital Interactions Globally in 2021

Ekata Protects 2.5 Billion Digital Interactions Globally in 2021

2021 was a transformative year for Ekata, capped by joining the Mastercard family to accelerate our shared goal of building trust in the digital economy. As consumers moved more of their lives online, online businesses grew to serve them. Over the course of the year, Ekata solutions protected billions of digital interactions from fraud and enabled better, faster and more trustworthy onboarding and transaction experiences for consumers and merchants.

“By any measure, this was an incredible year for us as a business and as a team,” said Rob Eleveld, Ekata’s CEO. “We had the right mix of product, people and strategy to anticipate and navigate the tectonic changes taking place in the global economy. And now, as a part of Mastercard, we have the partnerships and scale to help more businesses know their customers, and, in turn, enable more people to safely interact online.”

Entering the second year of the global pandemic, consumers continued to transform the way they shop, bank and work, pushing many day-to-day transactions online and rapidly expanding the digital economy. While the availability of vaccines allowed in-person interactions to rebound somewhat in the US, Mastercard found that roughly 20% of the peak in the shift to ecommerce has stuck permanently for the retail sector. According to Mastercard SpendingPulse™, which measures overall retail sales across all payment types including cash and check, US ecommerce sales increased 9.4% year-over year in November 2021.

The rapid adoption of online commerce also offered new opportunities and new incentives to fraudsters. For businesses, this only increased the challenge of providing frictionless experiences for consumers while minimizing fraud. As the digital economy continued to grow at a rapid pace in 2021, accurate and seamless digital identity verification became even more critical to businesses.

As a result, we saw unprecedented query volume around the world. Here are a few highlights:

    • Powered by machine learning and an unparalleled data set, Ekata protected close to 2.5 billion digital interactions globally against fraudulent activities in 2021.
    • Query volume grew 258% in APAC, in part driven by new partnerships, and 35% in LATAM in 2021 over the previous year as reflected in the volume of API calls to the Ekata Identity Engine.
    • New partnerships helped drive a 48% increase in partner-related queries from 2020 to 2021.
    • Query volume among banking and lending (+55%) and ecommerce (+26%) customers was up significantly.
    • In 2021, Ekata also saw great gains in the financial service sector being driven by new partnerships with Equifax and Feedzai.

The introduction of new products and improvements to existing solutions also helped Ekata meet emerging market needs:

    • New fraud detection model releases helped customers even better identify genuine versus risky interactions, with a 10% increase in product efficacy across the globe.
    • We introduced a new Merchant Onboarding solution to help payment service providers (PSPs) and B2B lenders better onboard the growing number of micro-merchants, sole proprietors, and independent contractors across the globe.

We are grateful to our customers, partners, and employees for their continued commitment to building trust in the digital economy. As we enter 2022, we’re thrilled to accelerate our mission together with Mastercard.

  • An AirAsia flight was diverted after passengers spotted a snake on their plane

An AirAsia flight was diverted after passengers spotted a snake on their plane

Passengers on an AirAsia flight had their trip rerouted after spotting an uninvited passenger on the plane.

In a video shared on TikTok by user @edal8808, what appears to be a long snake can be seen slithering through an overhead light fixture. In the caption, the user wrote that the flight, which was headed from the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur to Tawau, had to instead make an emergency landing in Kuching, according to a translation of the text.

AirAsia did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NPR. However, the airline’s chief security officer Liong Tien Ling confirmed the incident in a statement to CNN.

“AirAsia is aware of the incident that occurred on the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tawau on Thursday. As soon as the captain was notified, the plane was diverted to Kuching to be disinfected,” he said.

He went on to state that neither passengers nor guests were in danger, according to the outlet.

Passengers were able to continue their journey to Tawau that same day, multinational news network CNA reports.

Still, travelers with upcoming flights have no need to worry that their vacations may turn into a real-life version of Snakes on a Plane. In a statement obtained by CNA, Ling noted that what happened on Thursday’s place is not a common occurrence.

“This is a very rare incident which can occur on any aircraft from time to time,” he explained.

The video has been viewed more than 2 million times since being posted on Thursday, and footage of the unexpected discovery has since spread to other social media platforms like Twitter. However, it is unclear if the TikTok user who initially shared the video was the one to record it and they did not respond to a request for comment from NPR.

It’s not the first time snakes have found their way onto passenger flights. In 2019, a woman traveling home to Scotland from Australia encountered a nasty surprise when she went to unpack and found a snake curled up in her luggage. There was even an occasion where a pilot had to conduct an emergency landing after finding a snake in the cockpit.

  • 5 Best Gambling Destinations in Asia

5 Best Gambling Destinations in Asia

Planning a trip to Asia? You’re in luck! It just so happens that the region is home to the world’s top gambling destinations that easily rival the atmosphere of Las Vegas. From towering skyscrapers and all the way to luxury resorts, Asia is the place to be if you consider yourself a gambler.

The following Asian countries all deserve a place on your travel bucket list:

    1. Singapore

If you’ve got the budget, Singapore can be a breathtaking sight. Although it only has 2 casinos in total (keep in mind this is a relatively small country), they easily make up for in quality what they may be lacking in quantity. As anyone who has ever visited Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands can tell you, these are some of the finest gambling establishments out there and they will keep you busy for hours on end.

Don’t forget you can always play online if you’re carrying a computer or a smart device with you. Playing online is a practical solution that keeps you in the game no matter where you are at the moment. Basketballinsiders guide on how to play from Singapore is a great reliable source of information, covering the best offshore casinos that accept players from Singapore. But if you don’t mind the traffic, it pays off to see the Marina Bay Sands infinity pool from up close. The slots connoisseurs among you will be glad to know that the Resorts World Sentosa Casino will spoil you with its vast selection of games.

    2. Macau

Without a shred of doubt, Macau is a gambler’s paradise. Commonly referred to as the Monte Carlo of the East, numerous travelers visit the country to take in its breathtaking sights while placing a bet or two in one of its numerous casinos. Here, you will find several gambling establishments; combined, they are said to bring in more revenue than Las Vegas.

The Venetian is one such example and a very popular gambling destination. The glorious 39-story building houses the typical casino gaming repertoire in addition to unique niche casino games that can only be found in Macau. Then, there is the magical City of Dreams that looks like a shopping mall, but comes with a twist – inside, you will find a theater, an aquarium, and, of course, the casino section. While you’re there, don’t miss out on what the Grand Lisboa hotel and casino has to offer.

Macau is an Asian gambling giant.

    3. The Philippines

The Philippines is an affordable place to stay, but don’t let its looks deceive you. In reality, it’s a popular gambling retreat, and its pro-gambling climate has allowed 65 casino resorts to gain a foothold in 32 cities combined. Since the country is situated in close proximity to China, flocks of Chinese tourists gather there to visit the local casinos – the one thing they can’t do at home since China decided to ban it.

It’s impossible to run out of options while you’re in the Philippines, and your selection of casinos to visit will likely depend on where you’re going to be staying. If you’ll be stopping in Manila, our recommendation is to try some of the people’s favorites, and the list includes Manila Bay Resorts, Solaire Manila, and Resorts World Manila. The latter is particularly interesting due to its social venues, cinemas, shopping malls, restaurants, and hotels, all allowing you to treat yourself to something nice if the night goes your way.

    4. Cambodia

Ever since 1999, the number of tourists who visit Cambodia for gambling purposes has been on a steady increase. In fact, industry experts are speculating that Cambodia may very well become one of the countries to revolutionize land-based gaming or perhaps even the leading country in the entire Asia Pacific region.

The opening of the Golden Crown in 1999 was the one event to set the precedent. At the time, Poipet was the go-to city for gambling, but nowadays, you’ll see a plethora of casinos along the Vietnam border, all competing against each other to draw in as much visitors as possible. Do not be mistaken – some of these establishments rival the size of Macau or perhaps even Las Vegas.

    5. Malaysia

Despite the country hosting only one casino – namely, the Resorts World Genting – it still deserves a place on our list. The reason being is that Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures, as evident from its diverse cuisine and architecture. This, and many other things attract a myriad of travelers to stop in one of its entertainment venues and have an amazing time.

Those who have visited the Resorts World Genting can all attest to its amazing views and a broad selection of games from every genre. The grand total comes down to over 400 table games and 3000+ slots, and counting! Whenever you get tired from all the action, you won’t even have to leave the building to get some rest, as the establishment also happens to be one of the world’s largest hotel complexes.

    Conclusion

With its numerous gambling establishments and mouth-watering cuisine, Asia is unlikely to disappoint. Once the borders reopen, you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to visit.

  • Waze launches Cupid-themed driving experience just in time for Valentine’s Day

Waze launches Cupid-themed driving experience just in time for Valentine’s Day

Waze is not missing any chance of bringing new driving experiences to its users, so it’s no wonder that this time of the year we’re getting a Valentine’s Day-themed voice pack to guide us in our travels. Earlier today, Waze revealed that a new Cupid driving experience will be available everywhere in the world.

We’re not sure who’s supposed to impersonate Cupid but installing the new driving experience implies that you’ll be hearing his words of wisdom. Waze is also “warning” users that Cupid might have some hot takes “on the state of dating and love in 2022,” so if you’re not ready for some dad jokes, you better skip this one (unless Waze has something else in mind).

Just so you know, the pack will include Cupid’s voice, which can be paired with the limited edition Lovewagon and a Cupid Mood, if you really want to get into the Valentine’s Day mood.

Of course, the Cupid driving experience will only be available to download for a limited time, but once installed, it’s yours to keep forever. It’s only available in English, but even if you don’t understand the language, I see no reason not to go full Valentine’s Day mode if you love the celebration of romance and love.

  • Twitter is cutting ties with its two-factor authentication message provider

Twitter is cutting ties with its two-factor authentication message provider

Twitter is ending its business relationship with the company that sends its two-factor authentication messages to its users. In a disclosure to U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, Twitter wrote that it is ‘transitioning’ from working with Mitto AG, a tech company based in Zug, Switzerland, and backed up its decision with some reports from the media.

But why Twitter decided to stop working with Mitto AG? Well, according to some media reports, the reason is that a co-founder of the Swiss firm has been assisting governments in discreetly tracking and monitoring the phones of people to whom the company sends text messages. There were even cases when he obtained the call logs of some individuals.

A spokesperson for Mitto said in a statement that Mitto AG “does not disclose information about its business partners, through any channel – official or unofficial – full stop. Generally, such agreements are mutual in nature, with both parties agreeing to protect the privacy and integrity of the other.”

Mitto AG works with telecommunication and software companies to send text messages like sales promotions, appointment reminders, and two-factor authentication codes to people from all over the world. Mitto AG works with companies such as Google, WhatsApp, Telegram, TikTok, and Alibaba. There is yet no word from these firms on whether they will also follow Twitter in terminating their business relationships with Mitto AG.

  • Twitter is testing the option to change video playback speeds

Twitter is testing the option to change video playback speeds

Twitter announced that it is testing a new option for changing the playback speed of a video, which is just like the playback option on YouTube, Netflix, and other video platforms.

In the tweet from Twitter, we see that the new playback option may appear as a gear icon on top of the currently playing video. When tapped, a menu would appear with speed options varying from 0.25x to 2x, making it exceptionally useful for people who don’t have much time to watch videos or for people who need to slow the playback for some reason. Twitter also mentioned that the available speeds might differ based on whether you are watching the video on Android or the web.

Currently, Twitter’s playback option is only available on the Android and web versions of the platform, and only certain people have access to it. In the future, the test option will be available for iPhones as well, and at this time, there is no information on when we could expect Twitter to make the new feature available for every Twitter user.

The playback option would be available on ‘Tweet Videos, Amplify Videos, Voice Tweets, videos in DMs, and Video Live Replays, depending on their platform.’

I was curious to see if I was one of the users who have access to the new playback speed option, and I indeed have a gear icon when I open a video on Twitter. When I click on the gear button, however, I only find playback speed options ranging from 1x to 2x in the browser version of Twitter and 1x to 1.75x with 200% as the maximum option in the mobile app of the platform.

  • Facebook Messenger gets a Split Payment option as well as controls for voice message recordings

Facebook Messenger gets a Split Payment option as well as controls for voice message recordings

Meta is introducing a few new changes to the Facebook Messenger app. In a blog post, Meta announced that it is increasing the duration of voice messages to 30 minutes, compared to the previous 1-minute duration, and that Vanish Mode, the feature that allows you to send messages that are immediately erased once they are read, should be available everywhere now.

Meta also introduces two new features to the Messenger app: Split Payments option, which currently would be only available in the US, and voice message recording controls.

Split Payments enables you to distribute the payment amount among every person in the group, or as Meta said, “split your bill evenly.” The new feature is available on iOS and Android, but only in the US.

If you are in the US and want to use the new Split Payments feature, go to a group chat and tap the + icon. Then choose the payments tab and tap the “Get started” button. After that, select the payment amount, enter a personalized message, then confirm and submit the payment request.

Also, according to Meta, if some of your friends in the group don’t have Split Payments set up, they may quickly add their payment information in order to send and receive money.

Meta introduces the ability to pause, preview, delete or continue recording a voice message before you send it to your friend. Previously, you could only record an audio message and send it without the ability to preview it.

As we can see from the snapshot below, the controls for the recording will appear as a soundbar illustration on which you can slide your finger in order to hear your recording. The “Pause” and “Resume recording” controls are located on the left and right sides of the soundbar, respectively, and the “Delete” and “Send” buttons are beneath the soundbar illustration.

  • Thai giant Central Retail plans US$3 billion investment in expansion

Thai giant Central Retail plans US$3 billion investment in expansion

Thailand’s Central Retail Corp. plans to invest 100 billion baht ($3 billion) over the next five years in a bid to become a top Asian retailer and more than double its revenue and profit.

The new investment will help Central Retail grow its revenue by 2.5 times, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization by 3.5 times, and propel its market capitalization by 2.5 times by 2026, according to Chief Executive Officer Yol Phokasub. Thailand’s largest retailer will invest in new digital technologies to expand omnichannel platforms in all its business segments and scout for acquisitions, he said.

Central Retail is controlled by the Chirathivat family, which owns a host of industries from real estate and retailing to hospitality and restaurants. The Central Group in December agreed to buy British department store operator, Selfridges in a joint venture with Austria’s Signa Holding for $5.4 billion, expanding the group’s overseas portfolio.

Digital technology will play a greater role in Central Retail’s new growth strategy after it saw online sales boom during the pandemic, Yol said. “By delivering experiences that merge online and offline worlds” Central Retail expects to boost the business of its more than 3,600 branded stores, he said.

“We have already surpassed pre-Covid sales in 2021, and this is without tourists. Once tourists return, any sales we make will only be a bonus,” Yol said, adding the company will look to leverage new technologies across all its businesses in Thailand, Vietnam and Italy to boost sales.

Shares of Central Retail have rallied almost 16% this year on expectations that easing Thai Covid restrictions and reopening of borders to foreign tourists will help it return to profit. The company reported a net loss of 2.3 billion baht for the nine months ended Sept. 30, more than double from a year earlier. It’s yet to report full-year earnings for last year.

  • Important new features are finally coming to Instagram

Important new features are finally coming to Instagram

I don’t think I’m exaggerating saying that Instagram is overwhelmed with requests from users with hacked accounts. Although the company has been trying to make the process of recovering a hacked account easier, there’s no better defense against hackers than prevention, something that Instagram has been lacking lately.

Lately, the social network giant has been pushing out security tools that help prevent your Instagram account from being hacked. They’re probably not foolproof, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. After introducing Security Checkup for Instagram users who believe their accounts have been hacked last year, this feature is now rolling out to everyone on all platforms.

It’s a nifty feature that teaches Instagram users to secure their accounts including checking login activity, reviewing profile information, confirming the accounts that share login information and updating account recovery contact information (i.e., phone number, email address). The new feature can be found in the Profile menu / Settings / Security / Security Checkup.

To make your Instagram account more secure, we also recommend enabling two-factor authentication via WhatsApp, which is already available on certain countries. The 2FA feature can also be used with a phone number or an authenticator app like Duo Mobile and Google Authentication.

Another important new feature coming to Instagram today is the ability to delete posts in bulk. It might seem a simple feature to have, but Instagram didn’t have it until recently. You can also archive/delete stories, IGTV and Reels, as well as your entire interactions such as comments, likes, story sticker reactions, etc.

Along with the ability to delete and archive content in bulk, Instagram also added the option to sort and filter content and interactions by date and search for past comments, likes and stories replies from specific date ranges. All these tools to manage your accounts can be found in the Profile, just make sure to tap in the upper right corner and then choose “Your activity.

Finally, there’s a new feature that Instagram is now testing, which will allow people who have lost access to their account to ask their friends to confirm their identity and regain access to their account. No word on when exactly we will have access to this feature, but more details are promised soon.

  • Bug allowed some iPhone users to have Siri interactions shared with Apple despite opting out

Bug allowed some iPhone users to have Siri interactions shared with Apple despite opting out

Back in the summer of 2019, both Amazon, Google, and Apple were hit with charges claiming that their Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri digital assistants were recording personal conversations and having them transcribed by third-party firms. All three companies admitted that these recordings were being made to improve the performance of the digital assistants. In Siri’s case, some of the recordings collected by Apple included couples having sex, or speaking frankly with their Doctors about private medical problems.

At the time, both Amazon and Google allowed users to opt-out while Apple didn’t. But these days, customers of all three firms can opt-out of having their convos used to help train Alexa, Google Assistant, or Siri.

However, the release of iOS 15 beta 2 fixes a bug that ZDNet says might have been used to record some iPhone users’ interactions with Siri. Once you update your iPhone to iOS 15.4 (it’s still currently in beta), you will be asked if you want to help improve Siri and dictation by allowing Apple to review recordings of your interactions with the digital assistant. Opting out would prevent your voice interactions with Siri and the iPhone’s voice-dictation feature from being recorded and sent to Apple.

But as it turns out, a bug found in iOS 15 enabled the feature even for those who opted out. So while you might have thought that your flirting with Siri was between you and the digital assistant, Apple was still able to listen to some users’ private or even X-rated conversations.

In iOS 15.2, after Apple discovered the bug, it disabled the setting that allowed Apple to make these recordings and also got rid of the bug that automatically allowed the recordings to be made even when the user opted out. Commenting on the situation, Apple said, “With iOS 15.2, we turned off the Improve Siri & Dictation setting for many Siri users while we fixed a bug introduced with iOS 15.”

Apple added, “This bug inadvertently enabled the setting for a small portion of devices. Since identifying the bug, we stopped reviewing and are deleting audio received from all affected devices.”

When stories about Apple keeping recordings of customers’ interactions with Siri first made the rounds over two years ago, Apple said less than 1% of Siri activations were passed along to third-party contractors whose job it was to determine whether the assistant was activated by the user, or was accidentally summoned. Siri was also graded on whether it responded appropriately to the user’s query.

The initial reports cited information from a whistleblower who worked for one of the contractors hired by Apple. The source said that Siri would sometimes mistakenly activate because the assistant would think that the “Hey Siri” wake word was said when in reality it was not. In a bizarre admission, the whistleblower said that the sound of a zipper would sometimes activate Siri.

The anonymous whistleblower pointed out that most false Siri activations came from the Apple Watch and the HomePod smart speaker. He also left a quote that gives us a good idea about some of the content that the contractors were listening to while trying to grade Siri.

“The regularity of accidental triggers on the watch is incredibly high. The watch can record some snippets that will be 30 seconds – not that long but you can gather a good idea of what’s going on…you can definitely hear a doctor and patient, talking about the medical history of the patient,” said the whistleblower.

“Or you’d hear someone, maybe with car engine background noise – you can’t say definitely, but it’s a drug deal … you can definitely hear it happening. And you’d hear, like, people engaging in sexual acts that are accidentally recorded on the pod or the watch.”

Hopefully, with the bug squashed in iOS 15.2, when iOS 15.4 comes along and you’re asked whether to opt in or opt out of the program to improve Siri (using your personal conversations), your toggle switch remains on disabled if that is indeed the option you choose.

  • Vietravel reaps profit in Q4 after consecutive loss

Vietravel reaps profit in Q4 after consecutive loss

Tourism company Vietravel reported VND228 billion ($10 million) profit in Q4 of 2021, after four consecutive quarters of loss.

It posted net revenues of VND190 billion in Q4, down 60 percent compared to the same period of 2020.

“Company activities regained positive changes due to the fact the pandemic was gradually brought under control. Simultaneously, the company had restructured its financial investment,” Vietravel said.

However, Vietravel reported an accumulated loss of more than VND256 billion for the whole 2021, tripling year-on-year, as its core activities of tourism and aviation suffered from Covid-19.

At the end of last year, Vietravel had sold a 55.58 percent stake in Vietravel Airlines to an unspecified investor as it seeks more funding amid Covid financial pressures.
