  • Indonesia raises retirement age to 59

Indonesia raises retirement age to 59

Indonesia will raise the retirement age for workers to 59, effective this year, in accordance with a government regulation on the Implementation of the Pension Guarantee Program.

A regulation issued in 2015 set the retirement age at 56, with a provision for gradual increases. Starting Jan. 1, 2019, the retirement age was raised to 57, with plans for it to increase by one year every three years until reaching a maximum of 65.

As outlined by the regulation, the retirement age will increase to 59 beginning in January 2025 and remain in effect until 2028.

The updated retirement age also serves as a reference for workers registered with the Employment Social Security Administration Agency (BPJS TK) to claim their pension benefits.

The gradual increase reflects Indonesia’s efforts to address demographic and economic changes, ensuring the sustainability of the pension system while promoting the financial security of the country’s aging workforce.

  • Indonesia says 2024 was hottest year on record

Indonesia says 2024 was hottest year on record

Indonesia experienced its hottest year on record in 2024, the country’s weather agency said Friday, matching several other nations which have reported similar rises in temperature.

Indonesia still relies enormously on fossil fuel energy — which scientists say is a leading cause of global warming — and is listed as one of the top greenhouse gas emitters in the world.

The average air temperature in 2024 was 27.5 degrees Celsius (81.5 Fahrenheit), some 0.8 degrees Celsius warmer than between 1991 and 2020, the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency (BMKG) posted on its website Friday.

It said the data was obtained from 113 monitoring posts across the country.

Indonesia had its hottest April in more than four decades last year as extreme heat swept parts of Asia.

The United Nations said Monday that 2024 was set to be the hottest year ever recorded worldwide.

Both China and India have already said the year was their hottest in decades.

  • Vietnam nuclear power program needs 2,400 workers for revival, shortage feared

Vietnam nuclear power program needs 2,400 workers for revival, shortage feared

Vietnam needs around 2,400 engineers, scientists and other personnel to revive its defunct nuclear program with two plants in Ninh Thuan Province, but officials flag a likely shortage.

A typical nuclear power plant with two reactors requires 600-1,200 personnel, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ly Quoc Hung, director of the Department of Science and Technology, said at a forum Thursday.

Another 350 people with expertise in nuclear development and regulations are needed, he added.

The National Assembly approved last November revival of the nuclear program eight years after it was scrapped.

Nuclear power is expected to help Vietnam diversify its energy sources, ensure energy security and meet its net zero target by 2050.

But it lacks personnel in terms of both numbers and capability, particularly scientists, according to a report by the Department of Science and Technology.

The number of professors in nuclear science and technology is limited, and the facilities and equipment available for teaching and research are outdated, it said.

When the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project was being considered in 2010, the government planned to produce 2,400 engineers and 350 master’s and doctoral graduates in nuclear power and send 13% of them overseas for training.

While 55 Vietnam Electricity engineers were sent to Russia and Japan for training, most quit the state-owned company or have shifted to other areas after the program was binned in 2016.

Human resources are critical to the success of the program, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said.

He emphasized the importance of proactive planning to churn out scientific, technological and technical personnel.

“This is not just about the program but about building a nuclear power ecosystem and technology for the future.”

He has directed relevant agencies to make plans for meeting personnel requirements and creating specialized training programs by the first quarter of 2025.

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Education and Training will establish standardized training programs for nuclear power personnel.”

  • WhatsApp working on a new “Chat with us” feature for faster human support through its web app

WhatsApp working on a new “Chat with us” feature for faster human support through its web app

WhatsApp is making it easier for users to get help with a new “Chat with Us” feature that’s being developed for the web app. This feature is designed to streamline the process of getting support by letting users quickly connect with the WhatsApp support team.

In the past, getting help through WhatsApp often involved navigating through a long list of frequently asked questions (FAQs). This could be time-consuming and might not always provide the specific answer users were looking for. With the new “Chat with Us” feature, users will be able to bypass the FAQs and directly contact the support team.

When users click on the “Chat with Us” option in the Help section, they’ll be notified that they’ll soon receive a message from the support team in a WhatsApp chat. The support team might initially respond with an AI-generated message or an automated response. However, users can request to chat with a human representative if needed.

For those not in the know, WhatsApp’s web version can be used on devices that don’t support its Android or iOS apps. This means you can use WhatsApp on your tablet, Chromebook, or desktop computer. However, the web app works by connecting to your WhatsApp account on your phone using a QR code, so it’s basically like an extension of your phone’s WhatsApp app.

I think this direct access to human support could be a game-changer for users who need quick solutions to their problems. It’ll be interesting to see how this feature is implemented and how effectively it addresses user queries. While AI and automated responses can be helpful for common issues, having the option to connect with a human representative provides a level of reassurance and personalized assistance that’s often needed for more complex problems.

It’s also good to see WhatsApp paying so much attention to its web app lately by adding new features. One of the most interesting ones is a reverse image search feature that’s currently in development. This will let users search for images they’ve received in chats, which could be super useful for finding the source of an image or tracking down information about it.

With all these new features, WhatsApp is making its web app more and more useful. It’s becoming a real alternative to the mobile app, especially for people who spend a lot of time working on their computers. I’m excited to see what other features WhatsApp adds to its web app in the future.

  • Taiwan blocks Uber’s $950M Foodpanda deal over competition concerns

Taiwan blocks Uber’s $950M Foodpanda deal over competition concerns

Taiwan has blocked Uber Technologies’ $950 million purchase of Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda business on the island because of concerns it would be anti-competitive, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said on Wednesday.

Uber and Foodpanda did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

Delivery Hero said in a statement Uber may either appeal the commission’s decision or terminate the acquisition.

In a media briefing, the commission said the merger’s negative impact would outweigh the overall economic benefits, and corrective measures would not be able to address the competition concerns.

“In the food delivery platform market, UberEats’ main competitive pressure comes from Foodpanda. The merger would eliminate this competitive pressure,” Chen Chih-min, vice chairman of Taiwan’s FTC, said.

“Post-merger, UberEats would be less constrained by competition, giving it more incentive to raise prices for consumers and even increase commissions for restaurant operators.”

Chen added that post-merger, the combined market share of both companies in Taiwan would exceed 90%.

Uber and Delivery Hero announced in May the Taiwan deal that included a separate agreement for Uber to purchase $300 million worth of newly issued shares of the German food delivery firm.

The U.S. company expected the acquisition to contribute at least $150 million annually to the adjusted core profit of its delivery business within a year of the deal’s closing, which was seen likely in the first half of 2025.

Online food delivery platforms represent a small fraction of Taiwan’s competitive food delivery market. Foodpanda’s operations on the island were break-even in terms of adjusted core earnings for the 12 months ended March 31, 2024, the companies said.

  • Two new ride-hailing platforms set to launch in Singapore in 2025

Two new ride-hailing platforms set to launch in Singapore in 2025

Two ride-hailing platforms, namely Geolah and Trans-cab Services, will begin operations in Singapore next year.

They have received one-year provisional licenses that allow them to provide ride-hailing services, the city-state’s Land Transport Authority said on Monday.

The new brands will join the five other ride-hailing platforms currently on the market, namely Grab, Ryde, TADA, Gojek and CDG Zig.

Trans-cab Services, established in 2003 in Singapore, is the city-state’s third-largest taxi operator with a fleet of 2,079 taxis as of October, trailing Comfort (6,388) and CityCab (2,136).

A Trans-cab spokesperson informed The Business Times that the company is preparing to launch its ride-hailing platform, which is “nearing completion,” without announcing a specific launch date.

Geolah, founded in 2020, is a Singapore-based mobility platform powered by artificial intelligence. Its smartphone application of the same name will offer ride-hailing services in addition to its current limousine bookings and parcel delivery services.

Its smartphone app, also named Geolah, will expand to include ride-hailing services alongside its existing limousine booking and parcel delivery options.

The company stated that it operated in a “beta phase” for two weeks last February and now has 900 registered drivers.

  • WhatsApp to end support for older Android phones and iPhones in 2025

WhatsApp to end support for older Android phones and iPhones in 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer be supported on older Android phones running Android KitKat or earlier. This change means that if you’re still using an older device as your primary phone, you’ll need to upgrade to a newer model to continue using WhatsApp.

Meta, the company behind WhatsApp, is discontinuing support for these older devices because they lack the hardware capabilities to support the app’s evolving features and functionalities. As WhatsApp continues to add new features, such as AI functionalities, it needs more powerful hardware to ensure a smooth user experience.

Some of the popular phone models that will be affected by this change include the below:

    • Samsung Galaxy S3
    • Samsung Galaxy Note 2
    • Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
    • Motorola Moto G (1st Gen)
    • Motorola Razr HD
    • Moto E 2014
    • HTC One X
    • HTC One X+
    • HTCDesire 500
    • HTCDesire 601
    • LG Optimus G
    • LG Nexus 4
    • LG G2 Mini
    • LG L90
    • Sony Xperia Z
    • Sony Xperia SP
    • Sony Xperia T
    • Sony Xperia V

If you’re currently using one of these older devices, it’s important to back up your WhatsApp data to a newer device before the deadline. Otherwise, you’ll lose all your media and chat history from WhatsApp.

This isn’t the first time Meta has announced plans to end support for older devices. A few months ago, the company announced that it would stop supporting iPhones running on iOS older than version 15.1.

For iPhone users, however, the deadline to upgrade to a newer device is May 2025. This gives iPhone users a bit more time to prepare for the change compared to Android users. However, it’s still important to be aware of the deadline and to start planning for an upgrade if you’re still using an older iPhone.

The decision to end support for older devices is likely to affect a significant number of users, particularly in developing countries where older phones are still common. However, as these tech companies continue innovating and diving deeper into AI, I’m afraid it will become a necessity to update even more often than in the past — at least if having the most recent version of an app is a priority. It’s a reminder that technology is now moving very quickly, and we will need to make some choices in order to avoid losing access to our favorite apps and services.

  • Google now allows Microsoft Teams messages to be migrated to Google Chat

Google now allows Microsoft Teams messages to be migrated to Google Chat

Google announced this week that it’s expanding the ability to migrate messages to Microsoft Teams. Starting today, Google Workspace admins can migrate conversations from channels in Microsoft Teams to spaces in Google Chat.

In order to migrate data from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat, admins must use the dedicated console. Here are the steps an admin must follow to migrate their organization’s data from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat:

    • First, connect to your Microsoft account.
    • Then, upload a CSV of the teams from where you want to migrate the messages. You can specify the source to destination identity mapping by uploading a CSV of the email ID’s from source to target.
    • Next, you’ll enter the starting date for messages to be migrated from Teams. Then you can begin your data migration.
    • Finally, you’ll complete the migration by making migrated spaces, messages and related conversation data available to Google Workspace users.

It’s imporant to mention that admins can only migrate data to accounts of existing users with a user license and the Google Chat service turned on.

Equally important is the fact that the Chat migration tool will not delete or modify existing Google Chat spaces or messages. On top of that, admis can also run a delta migration, which will migrate any messages added to Teams channels since the primary migration (messages already migrated will be skipped).

As soon as the migration process is complete, admins can export a report that contains detailed information regarding content that skipped, failed or had warnings during the migration.

  • Vietnam’s Vingroup launches electric taxi service in Indonesia

Vietnam’s Vingroup launches electric taxi service in Indonesia

Vietnam’s Green and Smart Mobility (GSM) JSC officially launched its Xanh SM electric taxi service in Indonesia on December 18.

The Green and Smart Mobility JSC, which was established by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong – founder and chairman of private conglomerate Vingroup, chose Indonesia as its second overseas market after Laos.

With its smart and eco-friendly mobility solutions, GSM is determined to conquer one of Southeast Asia’s most promising ride-hailing markets while promoting global green transition.

The launching ceremony took place in Jakarta with the attendance of many host government officials, ambassadors from several countries, and nearly 100 strategic partners of Xanh SM there.

This marks the first time an electric taxi service has been launched in Indonesia, which is expected to meet the increasing demand for transport during the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays.

Dr. Pak Riyatno, Deputy for Investment Climate Development at the Indonesian Ministry of Investment and Downstream Industry, expressed his confidence that Xanh SM’s presence in Indonesia would not only encourage domestic and foreign investments in the green economy but also create new opportunities for innovation, job creation, and improved living standards for Indonesians.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia Ta Van Thong noted that Xanh SM service aligns with the new strategies and policies of the Indonesian administration under President Prabowo Subianto, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, or even 2050.

  • Indonesia rolls out $52B stimulus package for 2025

Indonesia rolls out $52B stimulus package for 2025

Indonesia has unveiled economic stimulus packages totaling IDR827 trillion (US$51.65 billion) for 2025, designed to mitigate economic shocks and address the weakening purchasing power of low- and middle-income groups.

The stimulus also aims to cushion the impact of an upcoming increase in the value-added tax (VAT) rate from 11% to 12%, set to take effect on January 1, 2025.

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the stimulus measures are carefully designed to provide balanced support, particularly for lower-income segments of society, to ensure their financial stability despite the VAT increase.

A significant portion of the stimulus, amounting to IDR265.6 trillion, will go toward VAT incentives that benefit a range of sectors. These include micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), essential food staples, education, healthcare, transport, energy, low-cost housing, and financial services. Basic necessities like rice, meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and milk will remain exempt from the VAT.

The government and the House of Representatives have decided not to impose VAT on essential commodities needed by the public, she said, adding some IDR394 trillion has been allocated for energy subsidies and compensation, which will cover the costs of subsidised fuel, electricity, and LPG.

To further support the economy, the government is allocating IDR129 trillion to social aid programmes, including food aid, subsidies for health insurance premiums, and easier access to unemployment benefits for laid-off workers.

In the automotive sector, the government will offer tax incentives for electric and hybrid vehicles. Electric vehicles and hybrid cars will receive substantial tax breaks, including a 3% reduction in luxury taxes for hybrid vehicles.

For labor-intensive industries, the government will provide tax exemptions, financing support, and 50% subsidies for workplace accident insurance to encourage job creation and economic growth in this sector.

In the housing sector, the government would extend VAT exemptions for house purchases. The sector not only meets the public’s basic needs but also has a significant multiplier effect, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth, the minister said.

  • WhatsApp adds new calling features for the holidays

WhatsApp adds new calling features for the holidays

WhatsApp is making it easier to connect with loved ones this holiday season with new calling features for desktop and mobile. You can now select specific participants when starting a call from a group chat, so you can call exactly who you want without disrupting the rest. This is ideal for planning surprise parties or presents.

Video calls are also getting a makeover with ten new effects that can transform your calls into even more fun conversations. You can add puppy ears, take yourself underwater, or even hand yourself a microphone for karaoke. Additionally, video calls are getting a boost in quality. Whether you’re calling from desktop or mobile, calls are now more reliable, and you can enjoy higher resolution video with a clearer picture on both 1:1 and group calls.

Calling on desktop is also getting an upgrade. When you click the calls tab on the WhatsApp desktop app, you’ll easily find everything you need to start a call, create a call link, or dial a number directly.

WhatsApp has been around since 2009 and has quickly become one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. It’s known for its simplicity and reliability, and it’s used by people of all ages and backgrounds. In recent years, WhatsApp has been adding more and more features to its app, including voice and video calling. Unlike in the United States, where protocols like SMS, MMS, RCS, and iMessage dominate messaging across the country, WhatsApp has remained extremely popular globally. Additionally, it has always been a popular backup option for Americans to use when the other existing options fail.

I think these new calling features are a great addition to WhatsApp. I especially like the ability to select specific participants when starting a call from a group chat. This is a really useful feature that I can see myself using all the time. I also like the new video call effects. They look like a lot of fun, and they can help to make video calls more engaging. I think these new features will make WhatsApp even more popular, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for the app.

  • ChatGPT down for hours globally

    ChatGPT down for hours globally

AI chatbot ChatGPT suffered outage globally for several hours Thursday before resuming services.

“ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but we’ve recovered,” the parent company OpenAI said in a post on X at around 1:00 p.m.

It referred to API, a cloud interface that gives users access to AI models, and Sora, the new video generation AI model.

OpenAI’s data shows that a “major outage” occurred for 4 hours and 10 minutes Thursday morning.

But at the time of publishing the issues have been resolved.

“All services are now fully operational,” OpenAI said in a note on its website, adding that it will run a full root-cause analysis of the outage and will share details when complete.

Users began reporting outages at around 7:00 a.m, according to Downdetector, a platform which tracks the status of websites.

In the U.S., nearly 28,500 people were unable to access ChatGPT as of 7:40 a.m.

ChatGPT, launched in 2022, has more than 300 million weekly active users, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said earlier this month.

  • WhatsApp working on a way for you to forward a message to Meta AI

WhatsApp working on a way for you to forward a message to Meta AI

WhatsApp is working on making Meta AI more useful and with the help of an upcoming update, you could be getting more context about the messages you are receiving.

WhatsApp has been putting a lot of effort into tackling scams and fake news on its platform. Now, there’s a new feature being developed that would let you forward messages to Meta AI so you can get more context on them.

Meta AI has been present on WhatsApp since April of this year. The AI chatbot is there to answer your questions, give advice, and also generate content among other things. However, previously you weren’t able to forward messages or media you’ve received to the chat with Meta AI. But that seems to be about to change.

The folks at WABetaInfo have found that WhatsApp will be letting you get more context of messages you’ve received thanks to Meta AI. The new feature will let you select Meta AI from the contact list when you decide to forward a message. Right now, the functionality has been found for WhatsApp for Android.

Right now, you can send media or messages to Meta AI by copy-pasting it in the conversation with the chatbot. Also, you will be able to add your question along with the forwarded message with a new “Ask a question” box which will appear at the bottom when you’re forwarding to Meta AI.

If you choose not to provide context when you’re forwarding the message to the AI chatbot, it will just analyze the message as is and generate a response. If you want it to check the authenticity of a message, it would be better to ask things like “Is this information accurate”, so Meta AI will know what you want it to do with the forwarded message.

Right now, the feature is under development. It is not clear when it will launch to the public, but hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.

I’m a big fan of generative AI and I feel like it’s super useful. The above use case is another great way to take advantage of the power of AI.

You will be able to check if a message is a scam, but you can also verify how truthful the info in a message is as well, which will help you think critically about things that you receive. And we all know that critical thinking is super important on the internet these days. Just don’t forget to think critically about the Meta AI answer as well.

  • Google Docs users can now use 40 more document templates

Google Docs users can now use 40 more document templates

Google Docs grows and grows: the Big G has introduced a refreshed library of templates, featuring 40 new designs.

The rollout of these templates began on December 10, 2024, and will be accessible to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual Subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts.

The new collection focuses on improving both the visual appeal and functionality of documents. Designed to be pageless, these templates come with features like document tabs for better organization, placeholder chips that streamline data entry, and building blocks with pre-set layouts and styles to give documents a polished and premium look.

Users can find these templates by selecting the “Templates” button in a new document or navigating to File > New > From template gallery in an existing one.

A wide range of use cases is covered by the templates, from blog posts and press releases to business proposals and journals.

Business users are taken care of as well: they can take advantage of templates for project roadmaps, marketing plans, and sales emails, while HR teams are offered options like interview guides, onboarding guides, and training manuals.

Recently, Google Slides also got decorated with a new collection of cool templates to help users create presentations quickly and effectively. This new collection has sales pitches, product roadmaps, and strategic plans for business users. Education-focused options include lesson plans, book reports, and project reports. Additionally, templates for milestone celebrations, workshops, and team games are designed to enhance collaboration. Pretty versatile!

I guess templates help users save time by eliminating the need to start documents from scratch, but… probably many people are just asking various AI clients to provide the
