    JV ‘revolutionises’ m-commerce

    Chinese mobile commerce company 99 Wuxian is bringing NFC technology to China.

    99 Wuxian and Australian Near Field Communication (NFC) technology startup Tapit Media have joined to “revolutionise” Chinese m-commerce and offline media by integrating NFC enabled interactive offline marketing campaigns with 99 Wuxian’s platform.

    The JV will utilise Tapit’s contactless communication technology which uses a range of contactless standards including NFC and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to deliver content to smartphones from offline physical media assets.

    Users with NFC-enabled smartphones have the ability to tap NFC-enabled objects to access content and information such as videos, mobile optimised pages and instant app downloads.

    It allows 99 Wuxian to provide a new and unique offering to its business partners in China by allowing smartphone users to interact with NFC-enabled offline media and 99 Wuxian m-commerce platform to complete transactions.

    The consumer engagement opportunity is significant and is expected to include using NFC-enabled smartphones to access information, buy movie tickets, receive food and beverage coupons or buy transport tickets.

    “It’s a very exciting development for 99 Wuxian and our business partners and merchants that we are bringing market leading Australian technology to China and drive direct B2C growth,” said 99 Wuxian CEO and executive director Amalisia Zhang.

    Alibaba invests in Israeli QR code firm

    Alibaba said on Tuesday that it has made an unspecified investment in Israeli startup Visualead as the e-commerce giant seeks to leverage the latest QR code technology.

    Visualead will use the capital from Alibaba to develop the next stage of “offline-to-online” technology.

    The investment marks Alibaba Group’s first in an Israeli company as the Middle East country boasts prolific technology startups.

    PLDT, Rocket Internet create JV for mobile payment in emerging markets

    Looking to drive the massive adoption of online and mobile payment solutions in emerging markets, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) Internet platform Rocket Internet AG are establishing a global Joint Venture for payment services.

    Under the agreement, PLDT will contribute the intellectual property, platforms and business operations of its mobile-first payment platform Smart e-Money Inc., a pioneer in mobile banking and mobile wallet services in the Philippines, which has handled transactions valued at approximately EUR3.4 billion (USD4 billion) in 2013.

    With over 5 million active customers and 300.000 trade accounts, SMI owns and manages the Philippines’ biggest “branchless banking” network, certified at the highest global security and governance standards as a financial service platform.

    “We look forward to continuing the long-term success story of Smart Money and optimizing the synergies between e-commerce and innovative mobile-first payment solutions,” said Napoleon L. Nazareno, President and CEO of PLDT.

    Rocket, on the other hand, will contribute its participations in Paymill Holding GmbH and Payleven Holding GmbH, two of its payment platforms for high growth, small-and-medium-sized e-commerce businesses across Europe.

    Oliver Samwer, Founder and CEO of Rocket Internet, said its network of companies combined with PLDT’s 14 years of experience in the mobile payment industry will allow the partnership to deliver world-class innovations in mobile money and micro-payments around the world.

    Over half of mobile phones now smartphones in Japan, says survey

    Smartphone users now account for over half of Japan’s mobile telephone subscribers, a survey of 2,000 adults said on Saturday.

    The Dec. 5 to 8 survey, which drew valid responses from 63.7 percent of the pollees, found the ratio had risen to 52.7 percent from 43.7 percent a year ago.

    Usage was quite high among young people, with 93.4 percent of subscribers in their 20s and 85.7 percent in their 30s using smartphones, the survey said.

    China Mobile eyes 250 million 4G customers next year

    China Mobile, China’s largest telecommunication service provider, has forecast that it will have 250 million 4G customers in 2015.

    The company has experienced robust 4G business growth in 2014 and had more 50 million 4G users as of the end of October, China Mobile chief executive officer Li Yue said on Friday.

    China’s 4G is powered by the homegrown technology, Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE), one of the two major international standards in the mobile telecom industry, the other being Frequency Division Duplex.
