    Shiseido takes over Drunk Elephant

Cosmetics giant Shiseido is to buy Drunk Elephant, a fast-growing prestige skincare brand recognized for clean product development.

Drunk Elephant, founded in 2012 by Tiffany Masterson as a “solutions-oriented, cross-generational brand for all skin types”, has since grown exponentially across a range of consumer demographics including Gen Z and Millennials. The brand’s curated range features biocompatible ingredients to benefit the skin’s health and support the products’ formulations.

The brand will leverage Shiseido’s global platform and resources to expand into new and existing markets both in the Americas and internationally including Europe and Asia.

“This transaction is squarely aligned with Shiseido’s Vision 2020 goal of accelerating growth and creating value through strategic partnerships,” said Shiseido president and CEO Masahiko Uotani.

“Drunk Elephant’s approach strongly resonates with its highly engaged and loyal consumers, who value the integrity and effectiveness of Drunk Elephant’s formulations combined with a fun, curious approach.”

“This new and incredibly exciting partnership builds on Shiseido’s significant momentum and successful track record of acquiring distinctive, best-in-class brands,” said Shiseido Americas CEO and chief growth officer Marc Rey. “Drunk Elephant is changing the way people understand and experience beauty by offering products that are effective and clean compatible.

“Drunk Elephant is built on a strong brand foundation and a unique philosophy that fits perfectly with Shiseido’s values and skincare heritage. Our innovative and people-first cultures are well aligned, and we share an unwavering commitment to our consumers. I also believe the brand will contribute to the business performance of Shiseido Americas. We are thrilled to welcome Tiffany and the Drunk Elephant team to the Shiseido family and I know they will feel at home from day one.”

“I started this business as an industry outsider, and from the beginning, I did things a little differently,” said Drunk Elephant founding partner and chief creative officer Tiffany Masterson. “To join with a powerhouse beauty company such as Shiseido that leads the industry in innovation and global excellence is a dream come true for me and for Drunk Elephant. We share similar values, most importantly an unwavering commitment to the consumer. I chose a partner who will let the brand continue to be itself, with the same formulations and the same team.”

The transaction was led by Shiseido Americas and the New York-based Shiseido Global M&A team, in close coordination with the company’s headquarters. Upon closing, Drunk Elephant will operate within Shiseido Americas, and Tiffany Masterson will continue in her role as chief creative officer and assume the additional role of president, reporting directly to Marc Rey. The transaction, in which Shiseido engaged Jeffries, is subject to customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions and is expected to close before year-end.

Amazon launches local online E-commerce store

Amazon has launched Amazon.sg, a larger local online store in Singapore, to diversify its product offer and compete with rivals such as Lazada and Shopee.

Fast delivery service through mobile app Amazon Prime Now was launched in Singapore in 2017. However, the initial product range was not broad enough to compete with other online shopping platforms.

“With Amazon.sg, we want to provide what customers have been asking us for: the ability for everyone to shop on a desktop and mobile, more local and international selection from Amazon and trusted sellers, paired with fast and reliable delivery”, says Henry Low, country manager at Amazon Singapore. “And we are also adding even more benefits for Prime members.”

Different to other e-commerce companies which focus on a marketplace model, Amazon allows small- and medium-sized Singapore businesses  (SMBs) to offer their products on Amazon.sg to reach more online customers and expand their business.

  • City Chic broadens US reach with e-commerce acquisition

City Chic broadens US reach with e-commerce acquisition

Over a year after divesting the Millers, Crossroads, Katies, Autograph and Rivers businesses to Noni B, and putting more focus on its flagship plus-size brand, City Chic Collective has announced it will acquire US specialty retailer Avenue’s e-commerce assets.

The US Bankruptcy Court approved the brand’s proposed US$16.5 million acquisition of Avenue’s assets after the brand entered chapter 11 bankruptcy in August.

According to City Chic, the acquisition will provide the business with a broader reach within the US plus-size market, and expects it will deliver accretive growth for the business’ international operations.

“Avenue’s e-commerce assets represent a unique opportunity to accelerate our US customer growth and expand across plus size segments,” City Chic chief executive Phil Ryan said.

“This acquisition delivers on our vision of ‘leading a world of curves’. It means that City Chic now has a portfolio, or a collective, of online business that we can leverage to further build our Northern Hemisphere presence.

“Our City Chic, Avenue and Hips & Curves brands will allow us to speak to more plus size women and deliver on-trend, well-fitting garments across multiple price points.”

Online sales across Australia and the US made up 44 percent of total sales for City Chic in FY19.

In April, City Chic also acquired US online plus-size intimates brand Hips & Curves for US$2 million.

The shift away from multi-brand retailing toward a more focused approach has made a significant impact on City Chic’s performance – with stock price rising from approximately 80 cents in June of 2018, when the Specialty Fashion divestments were made, to $2.80 per share last week.

The retailer posted strong sales over its first year as a standalone business, with revenue improving 12.6 percent to $148.4 million, while comparable sales grew 12.2 percent.

  • Ooredoo Myanmar’s digital library program encourages digital literacy among citizens

Ooredoo Myanmar’s digital library program encourages digital literacy among citizens

These figures are a direct result of Ooredoo Myanmar providing internet connectivity to 150 libraries since December 2018 and its latest contribution of 166 laptops. Within the last 6 months (December 2018 – June 2019), Ooredoo’s support for digital libraries have brought significant impact to local communities.

As of June, the program outcome revealed that Ooredoo’s digital libraries were used by 43% of its visitors to access news and look up learning opportunities. Among the visitors, 39% sought to improve their technical skills and 18% of people did job searches and applied for jobs during their visit.

The libraries have attracted and motivated more than 63,000 people to visit and improve their digital literacy skills. Over 4,200 people who visited participated in training workshops to learn how to use the internet and improve their digital skills.

U Tint Naing Htut, Head of Corporate Communications of Ooredoo Myanmar said, ”During the past six months, the number of first-time users has more than doubled in comparison to the last 5 years. This demonstrates that people are trying to catch up with the digital age. Our efforts are on the right track and are enabling people’s digital literacy through connectivity to the internet at digital libraries across the country. People in these communities now have greater access to information online and opportunities to learn digital skills through which they can gain knowledge and expand their horizon.”

Ooredoo Myanmar and Myanmar Book Aids and Preservation Foundation (MBAPF) began this joint initiative in September 2014 to transform public libraries into digital community centers. Since the beginning of the program, Ooredoo has donated 539 tablets, 166 laptops and provided internet connectivity for 150 libraries across Myanmar, valued over USD 560,000. The program is proving to be a success, with over 300,000 people across rural and peri-urban areas in Myanmar having access to digital devices, 200,000 first-time internet users, and over 200,000 people having received training on how to use the internet, contributing to the building of digital literacy skills among Myanmar citizens.

ZTE, Ooredoo Myanmar alliance to display multiple 5G use cases

This standard specifies the technical requirements of centralized control of shared air-conditioners, setting a benchmark for the centralized control operation of the shared economy in the home appliance industry. It is another breakthrough in the wake of the joint release of the industry’s first shared air-conditioning technology standard based on NB-IoT in September 2018 by ZTE, China Telecom Shanghai Research Institute, Haier AC and other partners.

ZTE, China Telecom and Haier AC carried out a comprehensive evaluation and pre-commercial verification of the shared air-conditioner centralized control model at University of Shanghai For Science and Technology. China Telecom and ZTE provided indoor and outdoor wireless network coverage to ensure stable and reliable signal quality, data transmission, and service applications in the centralized control area. The centralized control based on NB-IoT wireless network can effectively address the problems of traditional centralized control, such as difficult engineering, complex cabling, and overwhelming maintenance.

With the release of the shared home appliance industry standard, the NB-IoT network can realize the centralized control of temperature, mode and switch of the shared air conditioners, hence the wide application in campus, apartment and hotel scenarios.

    Myanmar faces Internet blackout

On Friday, the country’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) urged all telecom operators to suspend the use of internet data in around nine townships across the restive area of Rakhine and its neighboring Chin State.

Telenor Myanmar said in a statement, “As a basis for its request, the MoTC has referenced disturbances of the peace an internet services to coordinate illegal activities.”

The order was made under the Telecommunications Law which hut all telecom operators for a period of time which was not specified.

The army is currently fighting ethnic Rakhine rebels who are searching for greater autonomy within their own region. The Rakhine area is home to many Buddhists who are also fighting on their homeland’s border with the northern Chin state.

The Rakhine have accused the Myanmar army for committing several abuses against them.

Many civilians of the region were killed in shellings and crossfires, even whilst they were seeking refuge in monasteries.

“We have no internet at all. We use the internet to share information through (messaging app) viber,” said Kyaw Soe Moe, head of Inn Din village.

The internet blackout has also impacted local authorities in the region.

“We have to use the phone, SMS and fax to report back to our headquarters. Fighting is still ongoing here every day,” said a police officer.

  • Royal Enfield Returns To Racing After 54 Years With Custom 650 GT

Royal Enfield Returns To Racing After 54 Years With Custom 650 GT

For the first time in 54 years, Royal Enfield will return to the race track, with two newly-built, custom Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 bikes. Royal Enfield last raced with a factory-supported team in 1965 with its GP5 250 cc racer project. This year, a few passionate staff from Royal Enfield’s UK Technical Centre have worked nights and weekends to prepare two newly built Nought Tea GT Version 2.0, developed in collaboration with Royal Enfield-owned Harris Performance. The Royal Enfield Factory Custom and Harris Performance’s build “Nought Tea GT” was first revealed in May 2019 at Bike Shed 2019.

Thereafter, work began in earnest to build two out and out track developed Harris Performance “Nought Tea GT” race-prepped successors, with the focus and intent of being race-ready for the Bike Shed Festival 2019. Royal Enfield and Harris Performance have worked with carefully selected collaborators, partners and suppliers, such as Brembo, Ohlins and HEL to build the two race-ready bikes. According to Royal Enfield, both bikes have shed 18.5 kg weight than the stock Royal Enfield Continental GT, and boast of a 26 percent increase in power at the rear wheel.

“Having been involved in the new Continental GT 650 right from the concept stage it is going to be a thrill to see these bikes racing at Lydden. The stock GT 650 has proved to be a great platform on which to build a cafe racer and I think the public are going to be surprised at the performance level the design team has achieved,” said Lester Harris, Head – Performance Enginnering, Harris Performance.

“It’s great to see these two bikes come to fruition – after presenting Nought Tea GT at the Bike Shed event in May, and getting such a positive response, the next logical step was to see how well it could really go on track. As part of our custom initiatives, it’s very important to us that all of our builds work as good as they look – showcasing creativity not just in aesthetics but also to demonstrate the capabilities of our new 650 Twin cylinder engine. Royal Enfield’s support of the custom motorcycle community has grown exponentially over the past three years, and we are very excited to keep challenging the expectations of what can be done with our motorcycles. The Twins have added to this, opening up a whole new avenue of creative possibility, and it has been exciting to see Harris pull the best out of this platform. Working with Harris Performance is always a great experience – the knowledge they bring to projects like this, never mind our daily production work, is something that can only be gained through time and experience. After working with them on last year’s Lock Stock drag bike, it’s great to have an opportunity to have some fun with them in the type of racing they built the Harris name in,” said Adrian Sellers, Group Manager, Custom Program – Royal Enfield.

The weekend’s racing action saw Paul Young, Official Factory Test Rider and Curtis Wright, Factory Custom rider, take to the track with two Harris Nought Tea GT 650 v 2.0 in the Cafe Racer cup. Mark Wells, Head of Product Strategy and Industrial Design, headed out in the Commuter Cup on a Royal Enfield Genuine Motorcycle Accessory fully accessorized Continental GT 650, took to the dirt in the Malle Dash on board the skunK650, an Interceptor 650 which has been lightly modified for trials and scrambler racing.

The Nought Tea GT 650 v 2.0 bikes have undergone a long list of changes, to the engine, bodywork and cycle parts. The bikes feature custom ported cylinder heads, custom ported throttle bodies, custom race camshaft, lighter 520 chain and sprockets, two-into-two high flow headers and silencers, twin ITF air filter, as well as an upgraded ignition system. The bikes feature a custom three-piece fairing with dedicated mounting kit, custom double bubble screen, LED lighting, new custom wheels, fully adjustable Ohlins Retro43 RWU forks modified by Harris Performance, fully adjustable Ohlins STX36 twin shocks modified by Harris Performance, new custom clip-on handlebars, Brembo brakes, and a long list of Royal Enfield genuine motorcycle accessories parts, including bar-end mirrors and a touring seat.

  • Hyundai Invests In Netradyne To Develop Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Hyundai Invests In Netradyne To Develop Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

Hyundai Motor Company’s corporate venturing and open innovation business, Cradle, has announced that it is investing in Netradyne, an intelligent technology company specializing in fleet safety management software. The partnership supports further development of Level 3+ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (L3+ ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD) features that may launch over the next few years. Netradyne uses artificial intelligence vision-based dashcam devices to monitor safety performance of fleet vehicles. The system may also help crowdsource road and driving behavior metadata.

Hyundai and Netradyne will collaborate to utilize the road and driving behavior data collected by Netradyne to support HD mapping and map updates for Hyundai’s development of future L3+ ADAS and AD features. The costs associated with outfitting traditional mobile mapping system (MMS) vehicles, which are currently employed for HD mapping, make it challenging for many OEMs to place enough MMS vehicles on the road to provide the necessary frequency of HD mapping updates. Netradyne says that its devices are more cost-efficient and are currently equipped to numerous vehicle fleets.

Netradyne has already captured and analyzed over 1 million unique miles of the 2.7 million total miles of paved roads in the United States. This data includes numerous passes over the same roads to provide deeper insights into how driving and road different conditions may change throughout the year. In total, Netradyne has analyzed more than 350 million miles of road data. Each of these 350+ million miles has been analyzed with AI and collected by professional drivers.

Google updates Docs, Sheets, and Slides

A new look and feel are now available for Google’s Docs, Sheets and Slides app, the Mountain View company announced. Unfortunately, if you were expecting any new features or improvements, you’ll be disappointed. Google confirmed that there are no functionality changes whatsoever in this update, so the only things we’ll get are the visual improvements.

The visual improvements mentioned by Google include a restyled document list, highly-legible typefaces, consistent controls, and updated icons all over the place. Google also announced that the redesign has already made its way to the latest versions of Docs and Slides for Android.

On the other hand, the new design will roll out to Sheets on Android sometime today, so expect the new visual improvements to pop up very soon. The most recent Docs, Sheets and Slides Material redesign update is part of a larger effort to bring consistency to the look and feel of Google’s G Suite apps.

Although these updates are now being rolled out globally to all Android devices, it will take up to two weeks to appear for everyone, so be patient if the changes aren’t yet available for you.
