  • Audi To Increase Engine Production In Hungary

Audi To Increase Engine Production In Hungary

German carmaker Audi will increase the production of engines at its Hungarian factory to 2.25 million units next year, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday.

An Audi representative at the premium carmaker’s Ingolstadt headquarters in Germany declined to comment on internal planning.

“They plan to manufacture 2.25 million engines next year, and so far 2 million has been the annual record,” Szijjarto told a news conference when asked about a report that Audi planned to cut jobs at its Hungarian plant.

Audi’s Hungarian division said in April that it planned to boost the production of engines at its factory significantly in 2019 from the 1.95 million it made there in 2018, though it didn’t give a figure.

It also said in July that it would expand the manufacture of engines for electric cars at the factory, which is in the western town of Gyor. It said then that its e-transformation project would create 250 jobs.

The carmaker, which is controlled by Volkswagen, has been making engines in Hungary since 1994. Out of the 1.95 engines produced in 2018, 9,453 were electric axle drive units, according to the company’s website.

  • Audi India Is Offering Attractive Discounts On Select Models

It’s raining discounts this festive season and automakers are all buckled up to garner more footfalls. Luxury carmakers as well are offering attractive benefits on their product range to cash in the festive season demand which to an extent is likely to help them make up for lost volumes due to the prolonged slowdown. Audi India has been offering discounts on its popular models like the A3, A4 and Q5 this festive season.

The Audi A3 is now available at a starting price of ₹ 25.99 lakh and the company is offering 57 per cent assured buyback on the model and at zero down payment. Moreover, the company is also offering exchange bonus of ₹ 1 lakh on the model and specific benefits for corporate employees and professionals. The German carmaker is also offering benefits on the A4 that has recently received a minor facelift. According to our dealer sources, there are discounts of up to ₹ 4.5 lakh on the post-facelift model while it goes up to ₹ 7.5 lakh on the pre-facelift model. The Audi Q5 which was launched last year is under a cash discount of up to ₹ 10 lakh, depending on the variant and location.

Festive season has brought some cheers to the industry that has been under pressure for a year due to the ongoing downturn. India’s largest luxury carmaker, Mercedes-Benz too delivered 600 units in a single day on the auspicious occasion of Dhanteras. In fact, mass car makers like Maruti Suzuki delivered as many as 45,000 units on the same day while Hyundai sold 12,500 units. MG Motor alone has sold 700 units of the Hector SUV.

  • Audi recalls imported cars with brake faults

Audi recalls imported cars with brake faults

Audi Vietnam has announced a recall program to inspect and replace faulty main brake cylinders on 21 Audi Q5 crossovers.

Distributors of the German car in Vietnam will recall the Audi Q5 Sport 2.0 TFSI Quattro and Q5 Design 2.0 TFSI Quattro models, made between July 2018 and March 2019 and imported as completely built units (CBU) into Vietnam.

Due to an error in making the main hydraulic brake cylinder, brake oil could leak after prolonged use, damaging the brake system and increasing accident risks, said Vietnam Register, the agency under the Ministry of Transport that is in charge of registering vehicles, in a statement.

However, Audi said the emergency braking function of the vehicles’ electronic parking brakes is not affected, and that so far, Audi has not recorded any accident related to the above problem.

The recall and inspection program will take place until June 10, 2020.

Audi opened its first dealership in Ho Chi Minh City in 2008, and now possesses three dealerships, the other two in Hanoi and Da Nang.

  • BMW Engine Development Expert Duesmann Set To Become Audi Chief In April

BMW Engine Development Expert Duesmann Set To Become Audi Chief In April

BMW’s engine development and purchasing expert, Markus Duesmann, is set to become the CEO of Volkswagen’s Audi premium brand, after BMW dropped its opposition to his early departure, a German newspaper reported on Saturday.

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung cited a person with knowledge of the appointment as saying Duesmann will start as Audi chief on April 1.

It said BMW’s board would discuss Duesmann’s planned departure to Audi in the near future.

Wolfsburg-based VW is on the lookout for clean-engine expertise as it struggles to overcome an emissions scandal that originated in Audi’s engine development department.

Audi’s current CEO and VW board member Rupert Stadler was forced to step down temporarily after his arrest in June as part of an ongoing emissions investigation. VW is seeking to replenish its senior leadership while Stadler remains in custody.

VW had said in July that Duesmann will take up his new position as soon as he is able to do so. He will be the second high-profile defection from rival German carmaker BMW after the poaching of Herbert Diess in July 2015.Duesmann’s BMW contract runs until Sept. 30, 2019, and it would also have a non-compete clause that BMW board members are required to sign.

BMW had said that Duesmann had informed its chairman that he would not make himself available for an extension of his contract because of personal reasons.

Audi Hong Kong opens Drivers experiential centre

Audi Hong Kong has opened an experiential retail concept store focusing on technology and lifestyle.

The store, billed as the Audi Innovation Space, was unveiled earlier this year at Kowloon Tong’s Festival Walk. It uses digital technologies such as a VR experience to engage customers and offer new ways to experience the brand. The store supersedes the former Audi Kowloon Showroom in Tsim Sha Tsui, which was shuttered in June.

Audi will roll out the new experiential store concept at its other Hong Kong locations, beginning with a new outlet at The Elements in Tsim Sha Tsui later this month.

Audi’s exclusive distributor in the territory is Dah Chong Hong, which has provided sales and service on behalf of the brand for 20 years.

  • Jaguar And Audi Are Having A Really Hard Time Beating Tesla In The US

Jaguar And Audi Are Having A Really Hard Time Beating Tesla In The US

It’s a trope that’s been around roughly as long as Elon Musk has been in the car business: When a new electric vehicle is unveiled, it’s dubbed a potential “Tesla killer.”

But from the flaming-out of Fisker to present day, Tesla has largely dominated the American electric-vehicle market. Musk has even managed to expand the company’s preeminence over the still small segment despite two new battery-powered luxury SUVs arriving in U.S. showrooms the last 10 months: Jaguar’s I-Pace and Audi’s e-tron.

Their starts are the latest indications that legacy automakers aren’t assured instant success when they roll out new plug-in models. Tesla’s Model S and X have largely held its own against the two crossovers that offer a shorter range and less plentiful public charging infrastructure. Jaguar and Audi also lack the cool factor Musk has cultivated for the Tesla brand by taking an aggressive approach to autonomy and using over-the-air software updates to add games and entertainment features.

“If a customer is choosing the I-Pace over the comparable Tesla, they are making the conscious decision: I don’t want the Tesla,” said Ed Kim, an analyst at the car-market research and consulting firm AutoPacific. “You really have to be someone who doesn’t like Tesla, who doesn’t want the Tesla product, in order to go for this.”

Tesla’s Model X and Model S each boast more than 300 miles of range, and the cheaper Model 3 travels 240 miles between charges. Jaguar’s $69,500 I-Pace is rated at 234 miles, and Audi’s $74,800 e-tron registers 204 miles.

Jaguar’s marketing team spent years laying the groundwork to introduce the I-Pace. In 2016, the brand joined Formula E, an open-wheeled, electric-powered race circuit similar to Formula One.

“We had an electric car in our development plan – the I-Pace – at the time,” said James Barclay, Jaguar’s racing director. “We had to create awareness about the fact that we had an electric car coming to market, firstly, and to showcase why you’d buy a Jaguar electric vehicle over something else.”

Porsche and Mercedes-Benz are also joining Formula E for the 2019-2020 season to help generate buzz for the new all-electric models they have coming out. The circuit makes stops in cities including New York, Hong Kong and London, which the brands are banking on as major markets for plug-in cars.

“City centers are where there’s going to be a really good application for electric vehicles,” said Kim McCullough, Jaguar Land Rover’s vice president of marketing for North America. “So having them be able to see something firsthand – it starts the education process.”

But while Formula E is drawing crowds of urban dwellers and a substantial audience on social media, all that buzz may not necessarily translate into showroom traffic.

“Auto racing really comes as one of the last influencers, in terms of influencing people to buy whatever car they’re looking at,” according to AutoPacific’s Kim. If Jaguar is doing well in Formula E, it couldn’t hurt the I-Pace, he said. “But I don’t think it would have a huge positive impact on awareness of the vehicle.”

Jaguar has sold an average of about 190 I-Pace crossovers a month since U.S. sales began. Tesla, by comparison, was delivering Model Xs at a clip of about 550 a month in its first year on the market, beginning in 2015, according to InsideEVs.com estimates.

The Audi e-tron has been on the market in the U.S. for only four months, but during that time, it has averaged sales of about 745 units, InsideEVs estimates. In July, 3.5% of Audi’s U.S. sales were all-electric, and the company expects that number to climb to 30% by 2025.

“We are confident that we are and will continue to deliver an offering that customers will want to be part of,” Cian O’Brien, the interim president, and chief operating officer of Audi of America, said in an email.

After initial efforts to nab electric-car buyers proved challenging, Jaguar has decided to attack Tesla head-on.

The brand is offering Tesla owners a $3,000 discount on the I-Pace for the next month and a half. “This is all about capturing a share of voice,” Stuart Schorr, a Jaguar Land Rover spokesman, said in an email. “The EV market is just at its infancy.”

“Consumers, as a result of seeing our race program, do consider us to be a car brand they would consider for their electric car purchase,” said Barclay, the racing director. “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and for a premium automotive manufacturer with their first electric vehicle, it takes time in the market.”

  • Audi India To Launch Q8 SUV In 2019

Audi India To Launch Q8 SUV In 2019

It might have been a very slow start to 2019 for Audi India, but the second half of the year brings in a burst of action. Audi has announced that it will launch 4 cars in India by the end of 2019 and as we told you earlier, it will all start with the launch of the new generation of the A6. But the Q8 Coupe- SUV will soon join the line-up. The Audi Q8 will be the company’s first coupe-SUV from the Ingolstadt-based carmaker and will be the range-topping model in Audi’s Q line-up, which was up until now led by the Audi Q7. The Q8 will be launched in India during the festive season, so expect it to be here by October or November this year.

The new Audi Q8 is built on the same aluminum-rich platform that underpins the like of the Audi Q7, the Lamborghini Urus and the Bentley Bentayga. In terms of dimensions, the Audi Q8 measures 4999 mm in length, 2011 mm in width and 1710 mm in height, which makes the Coupe-SUV wider, shorter and lower than its Q7 sister model. Visually, the Q8 comes with an imposing stance accentuated by the bold and aggressive face which comes with a large single-frame grille with fat borders with both vertical and horizontal slats that come with chrome highlights. The grille is flanked by a pair of sleek LED headlamps with HD Matrix LED technology available as an option and 3D-effect daytime running lamps. The front bumper comes with a beefy skid plate and large air intakes, while the sloping bonnet features prominent character lines adding to the muscular look of the new Q8.

The rear section comes with roof-mounted spoiler and wide LED taillamps with a digital character, which are connected by a light strip creating the impression of one single unit. The rear bumper looks well-designed and features a mesh design element that houses the sensors, while below we have the rear skid plate and styling inserts finished in dark chrome.

On the equipment front, the SUV features a host of tech like adaptive cruise assist, efficiency assist, crossing assist, lane change warning, curb warning and 360-degree cameras. One highlight is the remote garage pilot, which will come in early 2019, allows the drive to guides the SUV into a garage and back out again autonomously, and all can be done by the myAudi app on their smartphone. Behind all of these features is the central driver assistance controller. It continuously computes a differentiated model of the surroundings and uses this to manage the assistance systems. The required data are obtained – depending on the selected options – from up to five radar sensors, six cameras, twelve ultrasound sensors and the laser scanner.

The Q8 will get a 3.0-litre V6 TDI in the Q8 50 TDI variant delivering 286 bhp and 600 Nm of torque, which are channelled to all four wheels through an eight-speed tiptronic automatic transmission and Audi’s Quattro AWD system. Later the Q8 will also get a less-powerful 3.0 TDI and a 3.0 TFSI petrol variant offering 340 bhp.

  • My Audi Connect App Introduced In India

My Audi Connect App Introduced In India

There is no denying the fact that connected cars are the future and whoever gets it first in the segment, definitely has the exclusivity advantage to an extent. In the luxury car market, its Audi which have come up with a new connected app that not only helps you access your car 24×7 but also offers a range of exciting features. However, Audi customers will need to shell out ₹ 19,999 more for the package. The app represents the digital connection between the owner, vehicle and infrastructure and provides real-time information about the vehicle which can be accessed from any part of the world as long as you have an active internet connection.

The My Audi app is broadly divided into five categories- Safety and Security, Driver’s Behaviour, Lifestyle, Geo-Location and Utility. Under the safety and security slug, you get features like SOS emergency alert to contacts and medical help, roadside assistance, curfew alerts which basically is geofencing and sets the boundary outside which the car isn’t allowed to go and disturbance alert which alerts your whenever someone is trying to access your car without your permission. The Driver’s behavior category offers features like Trip Analysis, Head Braking, Hard Acceleration, sharp turns and idling alert (just in case your vehicle is on for a long time and the driver is misusing the AC or other features). The lifestyle segment brings to you various music and media apps along with a very elite kind of feature called concierge desk which gives you a plethora of dine and wine options among other leisure activities. The geolocation feature is again a very useful one primarily because of its car finder and tow alert feature along with live location service. Last but not the least, the utility category offers features like service booking, vehicle history, vehicle’s health and virtual document storage which Audi says won’t be used for scanning personal information of any customer.

Though these services come at a cost in most of Audi cars, the company says that the flagship models will get them as standard. Existing Audi customers who have purchased their cars after 2011 can also avail these services as it will be compatible with those models. However, the idea is also to cater and attract entry-level luxury car buyers who may find these features even more lucrative as it will add value to their lifestyle.

  • New Audi S8 Unveiled Globally

    New Audi S8 Unveiled Globally

Audi is all set to put up a big show in 2020. The German luxury carmaker has been testing a slew of new models which are scheduled to be launched in 2020. The new-generation Audi A8was unveiled a couple of years ago and the S8 prototype was soon spotted being tested at the Nurburgring circuit. Almost two years later, Audi has finally unveiled the full-blown performance sedan and the figures are rather impressive.

The all-new 2020 Audi S8 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 motor which churns out a 555 bhp and a humongous peak torque of 800 Nm which is enough for a car that weighs 2.5 tons. In addition, it also gets a 48-volt mild hybrid system for start-stop traffic condition which betters the fuel efficiency and performance. Now such manic power delivery also needs to be handled prudently and for the purpose, Audi has equipped the S8 with some advanced standard fitments. For instance, the new model gets predictive active suspension as standard which can raise or lower each wheel individually. The suspension helps to keep the body stable by predicting the road conditions. For example, forward-looking cameras can sense potholes and adjust the ride accordingly. Then, in the dynamic mode, the suspension limits the body roll to as low as 2.5 degrees which goes up to 5 degrees in the comfort mode. Other standard fitments include Quattro all-wheel-drive, all-wheel steering, a sport differential and carbon fiber ceramic brakes which measure at 16.5-inch in the front and 14.6-inch at the rear.

Understated design has been a tradition at Audi and the same goes even for performance cars. The new S8 looks subtle and very similar to the A8. Though the face is a bit aggressive, there isn’t much drama to make it look busy. At the rear, it gets quad tailpipes set up and the S badging. Moreover, it gets sporty looking five-spoke alloy wheels as well. Upgrades on the inside are little more than subtle. It gets an exclusive upper inlay made of Carbon Vector that creates a special 3D effect. Matte aluminum trim and diamond-stitched seats with embroidered S badging are also something which differentiates it from the A8 sedan. The fully-loaded S8 will be equipped with five radars, six cameras, twelve ultrasound sensors and a laser scanner.

  • Audi Recalls 1644 e-Tron SUVs Globally

Audi Recalls 1644 e-Tron SUVs Globally

Audi has recalled the e-Tron electric SUV, it’s first in the history, for a water leakage that could result in fie. The company is taking the recall very seriously and said that the recall is voluntary and affects approximately 540 e-tron vehicles in the US that have been delivered to customers and 1,644 in total. The recall is in response to a potentially faulty seal that may allow moisture to enter the battery compartment which could lead to a short circuit or in extreme cases to a fire. No incidents have been reported globally yet, but Audi is taking precautions to make sure that the problem is fixed. The recall repair is expected to become available in August 2019.

Customers are being contacted directly to inform them of the recall and the company’s dealer network will get the issue resolved. Audi e-tron vehicles unaffected by the recall remain available for delivery and the company’s reservation system remains open to receive customer reservations.

The e-Tron is not the only electric car that has faced this issue, in fact even the Jaguar too has had to recall the I-Pace to rectify a fault with the regenerative brake system. While the India launch will happen in the second half of 2019, we wait to see what it’ll be priced at as also how the country takes to the first luxury electric car in the country.

  • Audi Q3 Sportback To Be Unveiled In July 2019

Audi Q3 Sportback To Be Unveiled In July 2019

Coupe SUVs are catching the fancy of car buyers. Mercedes-Benz and BMW have been selling such models for quite some time and Audi too followed the trend with introducing the five-seater Q8 which will be its new flagship in the SUV range. The German carmaker had also shown interest in making a coupe body style of the 2019 Q3 and finally has confirmed that it is coming. The Audi Q3 Sportback will make its first public appearance in July this year.

The Audi Q3 Sportback is among the seven new SUVs the German carmaker has lined-up for this year. The company shared its plans in its 130th Annual General Meeting where it also mentioned about organizing a dedicated event to unveil the Q3 Sportback as there are no Auto shows or major Auto events lined up during that time. The Coupe SUV will be showcased at the Frankfurt motor show as well in September.

Now we still don’t have any clear details about the Q3 Sportback but we expect it to be similar in design to the new-generation Audi Q3. The model will borrow design cues from the Q8 Coupe SUV as well as sporting a similar kind of coupe roofline which may not be as steeply raked as we have seen on other models like the A5 and A7 Sportback. The facade and profile is expected to remain identical to the Q3 housing the same massive grille which may be finished in piano black to add a sense of sportiness. Mechanically, the car is likely to use the same powertrains that drive the Q3 which means that the 2.0-litre TDI diesel and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engines will be on offer. Audi may also consider the 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine for the Q3 Sportback.

  • Audi To Showcase AI:Me Concept At The Shanghai Auto Show

Audi To Showcase AI:Me Concept At The Shanghai Auto Show

Audi will be presenting the AI:ME concept at the Shanghai Auto Show 2019. Beside this car, the company will also showcase the Q2L e-tron, which was designed especially for China and is built in the Foshan plant. The compact SUV, which will be delivered to the first customers in the summer of 2019, will make its world premiere in Shanghai.

The body of the Audi Q2L e-tron is 33 millimeters longer than that of the basic model. The car is powered by an electric motor on the front axle that mobilizes 100 kilowatts and 290 newton meters. With a battery capacity of 38 kilowatt hours, it has a range of up to 265 kilometers.

But the big concept car that will make its world premiere is the AI:ME concept car which shows the company’s vision for the future of urban mobility. The Audi AI:ME shows the ideas of Audi designers and developers for a compact car of the future. The show car offers a roomy, futuristic interior and capability for level 4 automated driving. This allows the occupants the freedom to do what they like with their time on board. The Audi AI:ME offers high-tech features for communication, entertainment, or simply relaxation.

There’s just one design sketch of the interior and that shows an interesting layout. There’s a massive screen that dominates the cars instrument cluster and is placed behind the steering wheel and the wooden trims. Considering that the company says it is a level 4 autonomous car, the AI:ME gets a steering wheel too but we expect it to be retractable given the autonomous driving function of the car.

  • Audi Seeks Closer Ties To Porsche In Cost-Cutting Drive

Audi Seeks Closer Ties To Porsche In Cost-Cutting Drive

Audi will make greater use of vehicle platforms and technologies developed with Porsche and Volkswagen as it embarks on a 15 billion euro cost cutting and efficiency drive, Chief Executive Bram Schot said on Thursday. Audi, whose slogan is Vorsprung Durch Technik or Advantage Through Technology, was a key research hub within Volkswagen Group until its engineers were caught developing the engine software which masked excessive pollution levels.

Now new Chief Executive Schot is tasked with overhauling Audi and refocusing research efforts after senior engineers were forced out by the dieselgate scandal, which has cost parent company Volkswagen more than 28 billion euros.

“We are discussing what we do ourselves and where we share resources with other parts of Volkswagen. We ask ourselves: Do we need to do this in-house, is it standardised technology, and is it unique from the customer point of view,” Schot said.

As part of group-wide savings efforts at Volkswagen, Audi has surrendered responsibility for developing driverless cars to engineers at VW in Hanover, Schot said, adding that Audi still retains responsibility for making semi-autonomous cars which still require drivers. Sources told Reuters in November that Audi may surrender its leadership in the area of developing self-driving cars as Volkswagen Group seeks to save costs. Further savings could come from deepening a research alliance with Porsche, another premium brand owned by parent company Volkswagen.

“We can intensify our collaboration with Porsche,” Schot said. Porsche and Audi are already developing vehicle underpinnings for a premium electric sportscar, known as PPE. This vehicle platform will spawn a raft of premium electric cars, the company said.

Audi will offer about 30 electric models by 2025, the company said. The customer response to these vehicles will help determine the scale of possible job cuts, the carmaker said. Audi workers have a job guarantee until 2025 but electric cars require fewer parts and fewer workers to assemble so Audi is working on a job cuts scheme which relies on voluntary redundancies through early retirement.

The carmaker declined to provide a figure for possible headcount reductions citing ongoing negotiations with labour representatives at Audi.

Audi, the premium brand owned by Volkswagen, said it expects to deliver an operating return on sales between 7 percent and 8.5 percent, below its long-term target, as costs for developing electric cars weigh on profits.

Audi aims to deliver an operating return on sales of between 9 and 11 percent in the long term, the carmaker said on Thursday.
