Foodpanda partners with Indian cloud kitchen firm Rebel Foods

Online takeaway delivery firm Foodpanda is partnering with Indian virtual kitchen company Rebel Foods to roll out the latter’s virtual restaurant brands at 2,000 outlets across ten Asian countries, Foodpanda’s chief operating officer said.

“Foodpanda is Asia’s largest’s food delivery company while Rebel Foods is the largest virtual brands operator in the world,” COO Pedram Assadi said. “This is the largest virtual food brand partnership of its kind.”

Under the deal, Foodpanda, which is owned by Berlin-based Delivery Hero, has recruited and trained hundreds of outlets to franchise the global restaurant brands created by Rebel Foods and offer their food on its platform.

Mumbai-based Rebel Foods, which offers multiple cloud kitchen brands across countries including India and the United Arab Emirates, raised US$175 million this month at a US$1.4 billion valuation. It plans to launch an IPO in the next two years.

Cloud kitchens that prepare food for delivery got a boost from the shift to online buying during the COVID-19 pandemic. Low overhead costs versus traditional restaurants and fast scale-up potential have also enabled “internet restaurant chains” to grow quickly.

Foodpanda’s partnership with Rebel Foods is already being tested in six of the twelve Asian markets that Foodpanda is active in, and there is the option to expand to the other regions Delivery Hero is active in, Assadi said.

He did not give any financial details of the deal but described it as core to Foodpanda’s strategy in Asia – along with its expansion into grocery delivery in Southeast and East Asia – as it takes on competitors such as British rival Deliveroo and Singaporean startup Grab Holdings.

“Over the last year, we now have built over 250 ‘cloud stores’ that are operating grocery end to end, which makes us the largest e-commerce delivery player in APAC (Asia-Pacific)” Assadi said, referring to distribution centers dedicated to online grocery orders.

Delivery Hero, which is active in 50 countries worldwide, announced on Tuesday it had invested US$235 million in Berlin-based grocery delivery company Gorillas, as the global race to dominate the rapid delivery service sector intensifies.

Earlier this year, it also picked up a minority stake in Deliveroo.

Pandamart, an on-demand service primarily to deliver groceries and household essentials, leverage technology, and data intelligence for its accessibility, variety, and speed. From determining its location to the products carried in each store and inventory are arranged within the space for maximum picking efficiency, so groceries and household essentials can be efficiently packed and delivered to consumers within 25 minutes.

Foodpanda Director of New Verticals, Abhishek Sahay shared,“Launching 150 pandamart across 40 cities in the midst of a pandemic was no easy task, but foodpanda realized the critical importance in bringing our consumers what they really needed quickly and safely, especially during times of movement constraints,” he noted.

In Malaysia, pandamart became an essential service when the Movement Control Order (MCO) went into effect earlier this year, with grocery orders increasing by almost 70 percent in the single month of January 2021. Recognizing the importance of supporting local food producers, pandamart worked with local partners to source more than 60 percent of products in Malaysia, offering consumers with more locally SMEs produces and a local grocers.

  • Foodpanda grows q-commerce with more than 2,500 7-Eleven stores across Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and the Philippines

Foodpanda grows q-commerce with more than 2,500 7-Eleven stores across Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and the Philippines

What’s more convenient than a convenience store? An online one, of course – delivering food, and essentials to customers’ doorsteps quickly, at the touch of a button. foodpanda, the leading delivery platform in Asia Pacific, marks a new milestone with the announcement of more than 2,500 7-Eleven stores on its app, making the leading convenient store available in Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines.

With this partnership, foodpanda brings hundreds of 7-Eleven items including hot food, ready-to-eat insta-meals, snacks and alcohol and even pre-paid mobile phone cards into customers’ hands within an average delivery time of 20 minutes. Deliveries can be made anytime, anywhere, 24/7 via foodpanda.

In the beta phase for integration into the foodpanda “shops” feature, the number of 7-Eleven orders on foodpanda shops grew 50% month-on-month over the past six months. 7-Eleven stores on foodpanda offer over 1,000 unique items on average across the four markets.

The most convenient convenience store, powered by technology

As a pioneer in quick commerce, or q-commerce, foodpanda believes in using technology to better the lives of their customers. With 7-Eleven – a brand synonymous with convenience – on the foodpanda platform, consumers enjoy easy access to the choice and variety for their daily essentials.

In the Philippines, the largest variety available from a 7-Eleven store via foodpanda is almost 1,600 unique items. In Taiwan, consumers have a preference for post-dinner orders from 8pm to midnight, especially for snacks. We see similar trends across the other markets in Asia as foodpanda continues to provide consumers with better varieties and access to on-demand convenience.

Industry watchers like IGD have predicted growth in online grocery retail with more brick-and-mortar retailers partnering with delivery and technology companies to grow their online footprint, even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is in line with the rise of the ‘convenience economy’ over the past few years, as consumers get accustomed to food and grocery deliveries. COVID-19 has accelerated this evolution and process. IGD reported that online grocery penetration is expected to remain at elevated rates post-COVID-19 as consumers stay home more. The report also predicts that consumers will continue using online deliveries when social distancing measures are lifted to save time.

As a leading platform for on-demand deliveries in the Asia Pacific region, foodpanda supports the entire delivery ecosystem to ensure that it satisfies consumers’ appetite for greater choice and convenience through its expansion plans. This partnership underscores foodpanda’s dual focus on growing its core food delivery business as well as its q-commerce offerings.

Food-delivery service Foodpanda is to launch in Japan, its 12th market in Asia.

During the first phase of the launch, Foodpanda will roll out its service in six cities, including Nagoya, Sapporo, and Hiroshima. The move is part of Foodpanda’s strategy to strengthen its presence in Asia Pacific, with Japan one of the largest and most mature of the region’s consumer markets.

The service has been launched in three cities – Kobe, Yokohama, and Nagoya – with Foodpanda saying it will commence in other cities from October 1.

“This is a market we have long admired, and this market expansion is an important step in making food and grocery delivery accessible to everyone in Asia,” says Eric Wei, CEO at Foodpanda Japan.

Foodpanda Japan will also invest to grow its quick-commerce, where customers will be able to get their groceries within 25 minutes. The Foodpanda app will also offer an in-store pick-up feature.

“In the first half of this year, we expedited onboarding and doubled the number of merchants and riders on our platform across the region so their businesses can survive the economic impact, while rider partners can continue to earn a living,” said Jakob Sebastian Angele, CEO at Foodpanda APAC.

The company said it aims to expand to more markets in the Asia Pacific region. Founded in 2012, Foodpanda operates in more than 300 cities across 12 countries.

  • Foodpanda lifts off 24/7 Singapore Pandago goods-delivery service

Foodpanda lifts off 24/7 Singapore Pandago goods-delivery service

Singaporean food-delivery platform Foodpanda has launched a logistics-as-a-service solution targeting businesses, using its community of more than 12,000 riders.

Businesses requiring package-delivery services are now able to request a rider via a Pandago account on a pay-per-use basis, whether or not they are currently a Foodpanda customer. The service’s delivery fees are distance-based, charged over a base fee of SGD6 (US$4.39).

The service builds on the rising demand for delivery within the territory, allowing businesses to request drivers to immediately deliver orders from their e-commerce channels and answering customer expectations for the most convenient possible shopping experience. The service also allows a real-time tracking feature.

“Fast and reliable deliveries are becoming a must in today’s ‘convenience economy’ or quick commerce (q-commerce) economy,” stated material released by the firm. “The availability of on-demand delivery has universalized expectations of being able to get purchases delivered in real-time, and businesses that are not able to offer such services will see themselves losing out to those who can.”

Pandago charges neither onboarding nor commission fees, and can perform as an “emergency” solution for businesses with existing delivery capacities during a surge in demand.

“Q-commerce is the natural evolution of e-commerce,” said Foodpanda Singapore MD Luc Andreani. “We are acutely aware of the challenges that come with on-demand deliveries, especially for smaller businesses. The launch of pandago aims to solve exactly these challenges so that businesses can focus on what they do best.”
