    Telstra taps drones to improve network repair times

    Australia’s Telstra has revealed plans to use drone technology to improve network resilience and disaster readiness during the tropical state of Queensland’s upcoming storm season.

    The operator will use drones as an “eye in the sky” to help technicians inspect local base stations following a storm or cyclone, checking for damage before technicians are deployed on-site for repairs.

    According to Telstra, this will decrease the time needed to conduct repairs following a natural disaster related outage.

    Drones from 3D Robotics fitted with sophisticated cameras and capable of flying up to 120 meters high will be used to look for damage to network assets.

    Telstra previously used a drone to check for damage to mobile infrastructure following bushfires in another state in late 2015.

    “With more than 8,500 mobile network sites around Australia, delivering coverage spanning 2.4 million square kilometers, our mobile network is the largest in the country,” Telstra group managing director for networks Mike Wright said.

    “The maintenance of our network is key to ensuring customers get the best possible service available and using drones is revolutionizing the way we inspect base stations.”

    Applying predictive analytics, NRT provides the ability to proactively identify weather or other conditions that may require alternate plans to meet service commitments and maintain an on-time network. UPS ships more than four billion packages worldwide each year using this real time status monitoring platform.

    The end result is improved visibility across the supply chain and enhanced quality of service for millions of customers every day.

    M1 to deploy NB-IoT network by 2017

    M1 and Nokia have teamed up to roll out the first nationwide commercial narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network in Singapore by 2017.

    When completed, the deployment – Nokia’s first large-scale deployment with an operator partner in Asia – is expected to be among the world’s first commercial NB-IoT deployments.

    NB-IoT networks and devices are designed to deliver improved network performance for M2M (machine-to-machine) communications – low-bandwidth, robust indoor penetration, and low power consumption, while delivering the benefits of licensed spectrum such as network reliability and security.

    The NB-IoT standards were finalized by the GSMA Standards body 3GPP in June 2016. Commercial NB-IoT devices are expected to be available by mid-2017.

    According to Bell Labs Consulting, there will be up to five billion IoT devices connected through mobile networks by 2020. In Singapore, NB-IoT deployment will support the nation’s journey to become a Smart Nation underpinned by data to deliver anticipatory services to its people.

    “NB-IoT is emerging to be a potentially promising technology for smart city’s machine-to-machine type of applications and services. We look forward to working with NB-IoT partners to explore the use of NB-IoT in developing innovative Smart Nation services that improve our citizens’ lives and make our businesses more productive,” said Jacqueline Poh, Chief Executive-designate, Government Technology Agency (GovTech).

    Sandeep Girotra, Nokia’s Senior Vice President of Asia-Pacific and Japan, said Nokia’s joint collaboration of NB-IoT deployment with M1 lays an important groundwork for further application of LTE-based IoT services.

    M1 also recently announced it is working with Nokia on Singapore’s first commercial HetNet deployment.

    350 gigabit networks have been launched worldwide

    There have now been at least 350 gigabit-speed network deployments globally across wireline and wireless technologies, according to Viavi Solutions.

    The network testing company’s new Gigabit Monitor database shows that there have to date been a further 164 deployments announced or under construction.

    But Asia is behind the curve in terms of deployments – while North America has the largest share with 61%, and Europe is second with 24%, APAC, MEA and South America together only make up the remaining 15%.

    Fiber is the most dominant gigabit technology, accounting for 85% of launched networks. Nearly all of the remainder, and 11% of the total, are based on HFC, while the final 3% are based on LTE-A.

    Meanwhile 37 operators have announced plans to deploy 5G once the technology becomes available, with five planning a pre-standard debut as early as next year.

    “The gigabit revolution is in full swing and faster speeds can’t come soon enough to feed an insatiable appetite for bandwidth,” Viavi CTO Sameh Yamany said.

    “There are more than 20 billion connected devices and that number is continually increasing. For the consumer, there are obvious benefits. For society as a whole, research also shows that widely available broadband can be a driver for growth and jobs. And with a 100-fold increase in speed, service providers will need to ensure that their ecosystems are ready for the massive network evolution required to deliver the customer experience they envision.”

    An authenticated version of the Cartoon Network Watch and Play app unlocks its full functionality, including a live stream of the channel and additional video-on-demand content. Cartoon Network Anything will also be bundled, showcasing the network’s best short-form content on mobile devices.

    BT has won a new contract to design, build and manage a fully secure global network for Exact, a provider of cloud business software.

    The 4-year contract covers the creation of an integrated IT infrastructure supporting internal applications and services used by Exact’s 1,600 employees in 14 countries across Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia.

    Next to an optimized global network, BT will provide connectivity into the global data centers hosting Exact’s business applications and data. The contract also leverages BT Cloud Connect for a high performance network connection to Microsoft Azure.

    BT will provide extensive, cloud-based protection against cyber threats, blocking known and zero-day threats before they reach the network. Lastly, BT will take over and manage Exact’s in-office – fixed and wireless – networks and help drive employee productivity by providing voice, video, conferencing and remote access services.

    AIS abandons plan to rent TrueMove’s 2G network

    Thailand’s AIS and TrueMove have abandoned plans to enter a mobile network rental agreement after being unable to accept mutually agreed upon terms.

    AIS no longer intends to rent TrueMove’s 900-MHz network to allow it to continue serving its 900-MHz 2G customers in the wake of the expiration of its 900-MHz license, telecoms regulator NBTC’s secretary-general told.

    The two operators had been negotiating a network rental agreement since mid-April, concentrating on network roaming on the 900-MHz spectrum and customer migration between AIS’s and TrueMove’s networks.

    The government had been encouraging AIS to rent True Move’s existing network to allow it to retain some of its existing 2G customers in order to end a dispute over an extension of AIS’s use of its 900-MHz network.

    AIS is reportedly also facing government pressure to hand over 8 million 2G customers to TrueMove to free up the 900-MHz spectrum due to be re-auctioned on May 27.

    But AIS intends to participate in the auction, and may therefore be able to secure the spectrum needed to ensure service continuity.

    Viettel to roll out 3G-only network in Myanmar

    Vietnamese military-run operator Viettel has provided details of its plans for entering the Myanmar mobile market, including a goal of connecting 95% of the country’s population within three years.

    Viettel was recently selected as the international partner for a consortium of 11 local technology and other companies selected to become Myanmar’s fourth mobile operator.

    As part of this consortium, Viettel announced plans to roll out a 3G-only network on the 900-MHz and 2100-MHz frequency bands. The operator also aims to launch 4G services on the 1800-MHz bands if it secures the required licenses.

    The consortium will have a total investment of $1.5 billion, and Viettel will take a 49% stake in the venture.

    “We enter Myanmar at this historic phase in the country’s reform era, when the country is forecast to witness accelerated economic growth, enhanced also through increased foreign direct investment,” Viettel deputy general director Le Dang Dung commented.

    “Advancing the country’s telecom infrastructure will help us drive a surge in mobile and smartphone subscription penetration, to achieve the government’s target of reaching 90% of the population by 2020. We believe that the role of telecommunications is fundamental in driving Myanmar’s next phase of economic growth.”

    The consortium will be competing with Telenor Myanmar and Ooredoo Myanmar, as well as the joint venture between Myanmar Posts and Telecom and Japan’s KDDI.

    Tata Comms to provide MPLS WAN for Air France-KLM

    Europe’s second largest airline Air France-KLM has handed Tata Communications a multi-million dollar deal to provide next-generation network connectivity to 170 sites.

    Tata Communications will provide Air France-KLM with an MPLS WAN in the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific, supported by the operator’s global subsea cable network.

    The multi-year contract will see Tata Communications roll out a fast, intelligent network which will power Air France-KLM’s mission-critical systems, including passenger check-in, flight operations and departure control applications, as well as corporate programs in the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

    Air France-KLM, which carried 87.4 million passengers in 2014, is the first major European airline group to move away from the legacy networks widely used in the airline industry.

    Tata Communications’ global network – which today connects more than 300 locations for leading airlines worldwide – will enable Air France-KLM to offer a range of digital services in regions that have been identified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as the future growth drivers of the industry.

    Currently eight of the ten fastest growing airline markets are located in Africa. By 2034, IATA expects 1.3 billion passengers to touch China – up from 850 million at present – and India is set to see an additional 260 million passengers. Europe will act as key transfer hub to these emerging markets, with 1.4 billion passenger journeys in 2034 – nearly 600 million more than today.

    “Investing in emerging markets and cutting-edge digital technologies is at the heart of our growth strategy. We’re introducing a range of innovative services, such as travel apps for smartwatches, to provide a seamless, personalized travel experience for our tech-savvy passengers,” Air France-KLM CIO Jean-Christophe Lalanne said.

    “Tata Communications’ global next-generation network will act as the foundation for these services in the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific, empowering us take customer service to the next level and capitalize on the huge growth opportunities that these markets offer.”

    RCom to upgrade CDMA network to 4G from May

    India’s Reliance Communications (RCom) has revealed plans to progressively upgrade its CDMA customers to 4G starting in May.

    The operator will upgrade its CDMA network to LTE using the newly liberalized 800-MHz spectrum starting on May 4, citing a letter sent from the company to the Department of Telecom.

    RCom will progressively move its roughly 5 million CDMA customers onto 4G as the rollout progresses.

    RCom has already liberalized its 800-MHz spectrum in 16 of India’s 22 telecom circles and recently received clearance from India’s cabinet to do the same in four more.

    The first round of spectrum liberalization cost a hefty 53.83 billion rupees ($806.5 million), while the second will cost around 1.3 billion rupees. In the remaining two circles, RCom has already paid for liberalized 800-MHz spectrum.

    The sources stating that RCom plans to take advantage of its spectrum sharing pact with Reliance Jio Infocomm by deploying its own network but mostly using Reliance Jio’s infrastructure to provide the 4G services.

    RCom and Reliance Jio plan to leverage each others’ spectrum to ensure they are both capable of providing pan-India 4G coverage and competing against the nation’s three largest operators, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, which have already launched 4G.

    Thailand’s AIS facing 2G switch-off

    Subscribers to Thai operator AIS’ 900-MHz 2G service could face having their services disconnected by midnight tonight amid an ongoing dispute over spectrum usage.

    AIS still has around 400,000 2G subscribers left on its 900-MHz 2G network, but spectrum AIS had been using for the service has been reallocated at auction to True Move H Universal Communication.

    True’s 900-MHz license is due to take effect from today, leaving the fate of the remaining subscribers hanging in the balance. According to the report, AIS is expected to announce that its 2G subscribers will not face any disruption as a result of the reallocation, even though the rules stipulate that AIS will have to switch off its 900-MHz service after the spectrum changes hands.

    The NBTC recently held meetings with AIS, state-owned TOT and True over ways to prevent disruption to the remaining customers. But the companies were reportedly unable to reach a mutual agreement.

    True had offered to let AIS use its 900-MHz spectrum in exchange for a usage fee, but AIS has insisted on using the 900-MHz spectrum from the other winner of 900-MHz spectrum, Jas Mobile Broadband. The NBTC has rejected this proposal.

    Meanwhile the regulator has ordered that the applications of around 800,000 2G subscribers of AIS and rival Dtac be port their mobile number to True’s network be expedited.

    Super retail network adds speed for Pizza Hut Hong Kong

    Pizza Hut Hong Kong has is implementing a super retail network solution from Hutchison Global Communications to connect more than 100 outlets to the company’s data centers.

    Pizza Hut says the solution – a next generation metro Ethernet data capability characterised by bandwidth of up to 10Gbps and super-low latency of less than one millisecond – has enabled it to accelerate online ordering via mobile apps, the website and phone calls.

    The orders are sent to HQ which then tasks outlets closest to delivery locations.

    Super retail network (SRN) runs over a dedicated optical private network, eliminating bandwidth bottleneck issues.

    MPLS and VLAN technology and automatic network-level failover, provide high level security.

    Based on a dual-core network design, SRN delivers full core network resilience and allows quick access to company applications such as those for point of sale and online catalogue functionality.

    Howard Wong, Pizza Hut information technology director, says deployment of HGC’s SRN enabled the company to shorten the time it takes to process online ordering and boosts the restaurant’s overall operational efficiency.

    The offering also provides the capacity to expand the company’s armoury of in-store applications.

    Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings, of which Hutchison Global Communications is the fixed line division, says it is creating vertical retail solutions based on the next generation network’s capabilities.
