Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, has announced its partnership with Sa Sa Dot Com Limited (“Sa Sa”), a subsidiary of Sa Sa International Holdings Limited. The Shopee-exclusive Sasa Official Store launched on Shopee Mall in Singapore yesterday, marking the start of Shopee Brands Festival – an 11-day long campaign featuring a host of exciting sales, deals, and promotions.

With the launch of the Sasa Official Store on Shopee in Singapore, Sa Sa aims to not only strengthen its online presence, but also tap on Shopee’s extensive user base to reach a wider audience. The strategic partnership between both brands will enable Shopee to drive greater growth in one of its top-performing categories, Beauty & Personal Care, by providing users access to a greater assortment of products on the platform. This includes luxe beauty products such as the SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, Lancome Youth Activating Concentrate, and Shiseido Ultimune Power Infusing Concentrate.

Shopee Joins Hands With SUTD To Nurture Singapore’sTech Talent Pipeline

The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Shopee, the e-commerce arm of Sea, announced that they will join hands to nurture Singapore’s tech talent pipeline. SUTD will look to leverage Shopee’s industry expertise, regional presence, and ecosystem to create new opportunities for SUTD students.

The partnership will comprise two parts:

    1. Shopee-SUTD Scholarship: To provide financially disadvantaged students with the opportunity to pursue an education in technology and design.

    2. Shopee-SUTD Industry Collaboration Dialogues: To explore further opportunities for Shopee to broaden its support for SUTD’s capacity building initiatives for tech talent in Singapore.

(L-R) Prof Chong Tow Chong, President of SUTD and Gang Ye, Group Chief Operating Officer of Sea at the Shopee-SUTD Scholarship Gift Ceremony on 23 January, 2020.

The Shopee-SUTD scholarships will provide a total of four financially disadvantaged Singaporean students with full, four-year scholarships that will cover their tuition fees and study-related expenses. The scholarships will be awarded across four years, starting from the Academic Year 2020 intake. Each scholarship will be worth $15,000 annually and will not require recipients to undertake any service orbond requirements.

The Shopee-SUTD Industry Collaboration Dialogues will see Shopee and SUTD explore additional avenues for industry-university collaboration by combining Shopee’s industry know-how, regional presence, and ecosystem together with SUTD’s educational expertise.

These build on Shopee’s ongoing initiatives with SUTD, which include internship programmes and knowledge-sharing sessions, as well as project sponsorships – most recently, Shopee sponsored Team SUTD’s participation at the Autonomous Aerial Vehicle Challenge (AAVC) 2020 in Chumphon, Thailand.

Gang Ye, Group Chief Operating Officer of Sea, said, “Shopee is always looking for new ways to better the lives of people – whether it is by building communities, helping entrepreneurs get started, or creating valuable learning opportunities for our leaders of tomorrow. Together with SUTD, we want to do our part to shape the future of Singapore.”

Prof Chong Tow Chong, President of SUTD, said, “SUTD is grateful to donors like Shopee, who understand the important role education plays in lifting families out of financially difficult circumstances, and whose generosity help ensure that all deserving students with financial need have equal opportunities to pursue a high-quality education.”

Shopee’s partnership with SUTD is part of Sea’s “10 in 10” initiative, which aims to provide at least 10 million people across the region with the skills and training they need to succeed in the digital economy over the next decade.

Singaporean online shopping business Shopee is aiming to boost its market share in Southeast Asia.

“We believe that there should be a lot more growth potential in Southeast Asia so we should focus our effort and resources in this region,” said Zhou in the interview. “Whereas the e-commerce industry in China is more mature, Southeast Asia markets are still at the very beginning stage.”

E-commerce in the region is projected to pass US$150 billion by 2025, nearly four times the current levels.

“Our priority is to grow the market share,” said Zhou. “We will continue to invest to make sure that we strengthen our lead position, we want to make sure that we grow faster than others.”

Beyond Singapore, Shopee operates in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Shopee will open its new regional headquarters in Singapore at Kent Ridge.

The firm characterized the move as a reflection of the homegrown company’s commitment to invest and innovate in Singapore and the region.

“Shopee’s rapid growth since its inception and their new headquarters here is a testament to the strength and vibrancy of Singapore’s technology ecosystem,” said Digital Industry Singapore spokesperson Kiren Kumar. “We’re heartened by their commitment to build a strong pool of tech talent, not just for their own needs, but also for the larger ecosystem here. The purpose-built space boasts a host of features to facilitate a more collaborative and creative working environment, including a marketing studio where Shopee Live and Shopee Quiz are filmed, a gym and a fun zone for employees.

In less than four years, Shopee has become the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan. In the second quarter of this year, Shopee achieved 246.3 million orders regionally and recorded a gross merchandise volume of US$3.8 billion. According to a report by App Annie, Shopee was the number one shopping app in Southeast Asia by average monthly active users in the second quarter.

“Shopee has grown from a start-up to the region’s leading e-commerce platform in less than four years,” said Shopee’s chief commercial officer Zhou Junjie. “Singapore has been our headquarters, even when we were just 10 employees strong. This new office marks our rapid growth so far and sets the stage for us to solidify our leadership position.”

It is currently the most-used app of its kind throughout the whole of Southeast Asia, while rival firm Lazada remains the most actively used e-commerce app within Singapore itself.

“Apps by Alibaba such as Taobao and AliExpress remained prominent among Singaporean consumers probably due to the increased popularity of Chinese products and Chinese language proficiency in the country,” read a report by iPrice Group.

  • Shopee on top of the 10 m-commerce players in Vietnam

Shopee on top of the 10 m-commerce players in Vietnam

Shopee heads the list of the top 10 m-commerce players in Vietnam for the first quarter of this year.

The findings were released in a ranking by Iprice Group and App Annie Intelligence, which ranked shopping apps according to the number of monthly active users. It noted that mobile shopping is quickly becoming an important feature of e-commerce business in Vietnam.

According to Google and Temasek’s report last year on the Southeast Asian ‘e-conomy’, more than 90 per cent of Southeast Asians are now connecting to the internet primarily through their smartphones, making this region one of the most mobile-first globally.

Iprice Group also noted that during last year’s Singles’ Day, the rate of consumers accessing its e-commerce platform by mobile has risen rapidly from 62.5 per cent in 2017 to 80.4 per cent last year.

Facing these customer behaviour trends, online retailers in Vietnam are now scrambling to improve and promote their mobile apps. Shopee, in particular, has invested a lot on campaigns to attract consumers to its app.

“Shopee has focused on mobile from the beginning and built its user interface around it,” read an assessment report by marketing research agency Econsultancy last year. “This made users’ mobile shopping experiences faster and more intuitive – users can buy or sell their items in less than 30 seconds – allowing Shopee to capture a large group of mobile users in Southeast Asia and Taiwan.”

Ranked number two of the top 10 e-commerce players in Vietnam is Shopee’s biggest regional competitor Lazada. This is perhaps a more surprising result, as according to Iprice Group’s previous report, which ranked Vietnamese e-commerce companies based on average website traffic, Lazada’s monthly traffic has been on a decline that puts them in third place behind Shopee and Tiki.

However, when it comes to mobile, the e-commerce giant is now shifting to put a bigger emphasis on mobile shopping.

Ranking in the top five behind Shopee and Lazada are apps from three local e-commerce platforms: Tiki, Sendo and Adayroi. These three companies also have been achieving positive results in terms of average website traffic for the recent quarter, making them worthy opponents for the two regional companies.

Behind this top five in the ranking are AliExpress, Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba – all of which are currently not officially operating in Vietnam.

Lotte.vn – the South Korean hypermarket group’s local subsidiary – rounded out the top 10 m-commerce players in Vietnam rankings.

  • Shopee, Tiki solidify positions as top e-commerce sites in traffic in Q1

Shopee, Tiki solidify positions as top e-commerce sites in traffic in Q1

Shopee and Tiki maintained their positions as the two leading sites in terms of traffic in Vietnam’s e-commerce sector in the first quarter of this year.

According to the latest figures from the Map of E-Commerce released recently by iPrice Group – a meta-search website operating in seven countries across Southeast Asia, Shopee still held the dominant position in Q1 2019 with 40.7 million visits per month on average. Tiki followed with 35.6 million visits monthly.

Lazada ranked third with 29 million visits, closely followed by thegioididong.com (28.8 million visits) and Sendo (25.3 million visits).

Q1 2019 also saw several positive trends in the performance of local players, especially Tiki, Sendo, and Adayroi. iPrice’s latest data showed through the first quarter included the Tết (New New Year) holiday period, which is usually a tough time for e-commerce businesses in general, those three merchants still managed to maintain their good results from the previous quarters.

Doing the best in this regard was Tiki. Similar to the previous quarter, the website continued to achieve over 35 million visits per month on average for Q1 2019, helping its web traffic grow at a rate of 23 percent per quarter on average since the second quarter of last year.

Aside from Tiki, other notable local companies Sendo and Adayroi have been showing encouraging signs. According to iPrice’s Map of E-commerce, the two companies both have an average traffic growth rate of over 16 percent per quarter for the past four quarters.

Sendo’s CEO Trần Hải Linh also confidently told IT website Tech in Asia recently that his company was on track to achieve US$1 billion in GMV (gross merchandise volume) much earlier than the previously projected target of 2020.

This year would be an inflection point for the Vietnamese e-commerce market, Linh said, adding the market would grow much faster.

“We will see sizable businesses becoming comparable to regional players [and] customers becoming more familiar with e-commerce,” Linh told.

  • Grab now has more rivals than ever before in Vietnam

Grab now has more rivals than ever before in Vietnam

From an e-hailing app, Grab has made great steps forward, providing many different services. Most recently, it started the payment service GrabPay and lending service Grab Financial. The consumer lending market in South East Asia is very large. As estimated by the World Bank, about 2 billion people in the world cannot access bank services, and most of them are in Asia Pacific.

The non-cash payment market, according to Grab, is worth $500 billion in South East Asia. An analyst commented that Grab is wise taking a ‘roundabout’ approach to consumer lending (it conquered the transport market first before aiming for the consumer credit market).

Consumer lending is a fertile business field for Chinese e-commerce firms. The firms offer online payment apps to users to ‘learn’ about their financial capability.

Grab, as an app, quickly attracted users, especially investors. Just within six years, Grab became an unicorn company, i.e. an unlisted technology firm with valuation of $1 billion and higher, in South East Asia. Analysts estimate that Grab is valued at $6 billion.

    The challenges

The total number of Grab downloads has reached 95 million all over South East Asia. This could serve as the launch pad for it to conquer the consumer lending market.

“GrabPay e-wallet will be used for both transport and food delivery services, two of the most used services in South East Asia,” said Jerry Lim, director of Grab Vietnam.

However, the analyst said, by expanding its business, Grab would have to compete with more rivals who are ‘powers’ in their fields. In online payment, for example, it will have to compete not only with AirPay (Sea) and Alipay (Alibaba Group), but also with local firms such as ZaloPay (VNG) and MoMo.

In Indonesia, Grab bought an e-commerce platform, Kudo, in April 2017. Grab believes that this is the factor which can help expand GrabPay. However, in Vietnam, Grab’s two big rivals – Sea and Alibaba — both have strong support from two popular e-commerce floors – Shopee Vietnam and Lazada Vietnam.

Similarly, GrabFood has rivals in the food delivery sector, where Sea’s Now, which inherited the large custom from Foody, is the leader.

  • Central Retail to double online after Shopee acquisition

Central Retail to double online after Shopee acquisition

Central Retail Corporation has announced plans to to double its online sales to THB10 billion (US$315.76 million) this year. Central’s CEO Nicolo Galante said the firm intends to lead in the omni-channel e-commerce business, overtaking Shopee. “Non-food businesses globally have been disrupted by digital transformation and are struggling against the likes of Amazon and Alibaba. As the biggest non-food player in Thailand, Central Retail pledges to move aggressively this year to tap into digital transformation,” said Galante in an interview.

“We can be for Thailand what Amazon is in Western countries and Alibaba is in China. Everywhere in the world, the No.1 player in e-commerce and digital is always a new-economy company, but in Thailand it could be a company that is 71 years old.”

In this regard, Central intends to launch an omnichannel platform of services distinctive from those of Lazada, Alibaba and Shopee, whereby the company will retail products and services both at physical stores and online. Central will assist partner brands who lack the resources to build their presence in the marketplace.

It will launch the first such marketplaces for Central Department Store, PowerBuy and SuperSports within the next six months.

“We will launch our omnichannel marketplaces for our retail business,” said Galante. “If there are some problems with the products, the customer can return the products to the store, get advice and other services at the store.”

For apparel, Central will launch launch a “Reserve and Collect” service that allows buyers to reserve two or more sizes or colours of products online and choose which to buy after trying them in-store.

The move is part of the firm’s considerable investment in technology, teams and new services in the hopes of taking the lead in the e-commerce business by 2021.

“Further expansion into the online realm with the opening of an official store on Shopee will see a bigger contribution to the brand’s revenue growth,” she said.
