  • Millennials Dominate Indonesia’s Online Shopping Scene

Millennials Dominate Indonesia’s Online Shopping Scene

Millennials are driving growth in Indonesia’s e-commerce industry as they buy a wide range of items, from clothes and gadgets to phone credit and electricity tokens, from online outlets with increasing frequency, according to a recent report from market research and consulting firm Ipsos Indonesia. The E-Commerce Outlook 2018 report released on Monday looked at the profiles of 32 million online shoppers in the country.

The study drew results from an online survey in August. Ipsos Indonesia said the study served as an exploratory stage to be followed up by a more extensive survey planned for next year.

The study found that 64 percent of online shopping is dominated and driven by millennials, both in terms of product categories and revenue, Ipsos research director Andi Sukma said, referring to the 25-30 age group.

“They are made up of young families that have a minimum income of Rp 4 million [$280] per month,” said Indah Tanip, an associate director at Ipsos Observer.

Most millennials are drawn to e-commerce for its convenience and competitive prices, the rise of financial technology and online payment platforms, such as OVO and Go-Pay, which have also encouraged more millennials to purchase their phone credit and pay bills through e-commerce apps, the Ipsos report said.

The report also identified the five most-visited e-commerce sites: Tokopedia, Shopee, Lazada, Bukalapak and Blibli.com.

Citing data from the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), Ipsos said the wider availability of broadband internet in the country has helped fuel e-commerce growth. About 72 percent of Indonesians living in urban areas and nearly 50 percent in rural-urban areas have internet access.

The E-Commerce Outlook 2018 report also looked at community habits, online service accessibility, popular e-commerce sites and consumers’ preferred payment methods.

K-pop group Blackpink was founded in 2016 and within just two years has built a strong reputation for its unique vocals and the group members’ personalities. Hailed by Billboard as the best-charting female Korean act in history, Blackpink has established prominence with record-breaking releases, including the single Ddu-Du Ddu-Du and albums Square One, Square Two and their most recent mini-album, Square Up.

  • Chinese Singles’ Day courts Vietnamese consumers

Chinese Singles’ Day courts Vietnamese consumers

Promoted by Alibaba in China for more than 10 years, Singles’ Day is now courting Vietnam with great fervor. More than a week before “Singles’ Day’ which falls on Nov. 11, major shopping firms in Vietnam had begun to update their mobile applications with a range of games designed to ‘hype up’ consumers.

These included shaking the phone to earn coins (shopping vouchers), discount lotteries and ‘easter eggs’ giving specific discounts, and many more.

Few retailers explain why Nov. 11 was chosen as the date for this promotional event, which some hail as “the biggest discount of the year.”

Consumers and online businesses both acknowledge, however, that the marketing race building up to the day has been very fierce.

The most boisterous claims came from Singapore based e-commerce group Lazada, which announced that it will gift 110,000 vouchers worth $10 million.

General manager of Lazada Vietnam, Zhang YiXing, said he had spent the last three months fine-tuning Lazada’s app and working with vendors for the Nov. 11 event.

Although they have no reason or specific connection with Alibaba, other e-commerce sites are not missing the opportunity to profit from Singles’ Day. Industry insiders remark that with competition so fierce, the ‘big players’ are implementing emulation strategies to grab whatever advantage they can get at.

In particular, businesses do not want to stand idle during an event which increases the traffic and revenue of its rivals. So they’ve all jumped on the Singles’ Day bandwagon and made it spread further.

“E-commerce is the most developed industry in Vietnam and also the most competitive,” said Tran Ngoc Thai Son, founder and CEO of e-commerce company Tiki.

On the Tiki website, the company hails Nov. 11 as the “legendary sales season”, introducing a lottery to win laptops, phones and shopping vouchers with a total value of up to VND10 billion ($431,980).

Meanwhile, Shopee, a consumer Internet platform provider based in Singapore, has called this day the “Super Sale.” The company has also launched a game consumers can play to earn rewards and has been promoting a different product line each day to attract attention before the official event.

Lotte.vn has also jumped into the fray in dramatic fashion, calling the event the “Nov. 11 shopping war”, while Adayroi, run by Vietnam’s biggest private conglomerate Vingroup, has launched a full week of promotions from Nov. 1-11 with its “Sale Season”.

Experts say that in addition to price, this years’ competing retailers have also focused more on branded goods and after-sales service.

“Technology is no longer a challenge for Vietnam’s e-commerce sector but consumer confidence. Now choosing products and discounts from a trusted retailer is also important, not just price,” said Le Hai Binh, vice president of the Vietnam E-commerce Association.

“Delivery and after-sales services are competitive advantages that cannot be ignored in this race.”

    Lucrative day

Although not as fierce as this year, last Nov. 11 had made ‘a killing’ for retailers, encouraging them to step up promotions this year.

According to data released by France-based commerce marketing company Criteo, retail sales of online shopping sites in Vietnam during the last Single’s Day campaign increased 245 percent, compared with ordinary days in the year, and marked a 70 percent increase in traffic.

Last Nov. 11, traffic increased the most in the evening, from about 9 p.m. onwards. Shopping time “peaked” at 11 p.m., which is one hour before promotions end, so consumers were rushing to finish their shopping.

The two most popular items last year were home appliances and electronics, with sales soaring by over 276 percent and 266 percent respectively compared to ordinary days.

Silvia Siow, Criteo’s chief customer strategy manager for Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, said that these two categories were best sellers because of their high value. People tended to wait for promotions to cash in on significant discounts in absolute terms. Siow also said that Nov. 11 was playing a growing role in Southeast Asia, not just Vietnam.

He said the real gains from Nov. 11 were not in sales but an expanded customer base and increased market share.

“Sales are important, but traffic is more important. Increased traffic may represent newcomers who arrive and discover or rediscover products. “

The heat of the Nov. 11 race in Vietnam is expected to last many years as it is the second most dynamic e-commerce market in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia.

Economist Simon Baptis, CEO of Asia region for the Economist Intelligence Unit (Economist Group) said: “Vietnam will be one of the fastest growing economies in the region with real growth constant at a high level between 2019 and 2023.

“Reinforcing consumer confidence in e-commerce and electronic payment systems is also a need of the period.”

  • E-commerce giants rake in losses as market share war continues

E-commerce giants rake in losses as market share war continues

In for the long haul, online retailers are willing to ignore losses, focusing on promotions to attract more customers.

Hoang has recently been able to buy a few electronic items online at a mere VND500,000 ($20), a fraction of what they would have cost at regular stores.

He has been doing most of his shopping online in recent years, usually by hunting around for items sold at discounts of 50-80 percent.

He said: “A few months ago I bought a shirt on sale for only VND5,000 (21 cents). I paid VND25,000 for shipping.”

Customers like Hoang are the targets of Vietnam’s major e-commerce players. To attract more customers in an ultra-competitive market, these online shops are willing to spend large sums on promotions.

In the first quarter online retailer Shopee Vietnam had around 30,000 orders a day, most of which were shipped free, according to a report by its owner SEA Ltd.

Lazada also regularly offers discounts of up to 50 percent.

But in this process these stores are bleeding, with Lazada, Shopee and Tiki all reporting losses.

Lazada had an accumulated loss in 2016 of VND2.7 trillion ($115 million), the largest among online retailers in Vietnam.

Tiki had a loss of VND600 billion ($26 million) in the same year, while Shopee reported a similar loss last year.

SEA Ltd. said that most of the losses are due to the expenses on advertising and promotions.

But it is a war that would go on for a long time, Truong Van Quy, CEO of marketing academy EQVN, predicted.

To attract customers, they are willing to ignore their losses, he said, pointing out that even Amazon had to spend a large amount of money for 15 years just to attract users.

For an online retailer to break even it first needs to have dozens of millions of customers within five to 10 years, he said.

This was why Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba bought Lazada last year for $2 billion, and injected another $2 billion into the company last March, he said.

Tiki received an investment of $50 million from China’s second biggest online e-commerce firm, JD.com, earlier this year, while Shopee injected another VND1.2 trillion ($51 million) into its business, he added.

Industry insiders said the sector has huge potential with the expanding middle class and smartphone usage.

The World Bank has forecast that Vietnam’s $200-billion economy is likely to grow to a trillion dollars by 2035.

More than half of its population, compared to only 11 percent today, is expected to join the ranks of the global middle class with consumption of $15 a day or more.

Across the country, the ratio of people using smartphones among mobile phone subscribers reached 84 percent in 2017, up from 78 percent the previous year, according to the 2017 Nielsen Vietnam Smartphone Insights Report.

Online sales in Vietnam have expanded rapidly in recent years, currently accounting for 3.39 percent of the country’s retail market. The total retail market grew 10.9 percent last year to $173.27 billion, as reported.

  • Lazada, Shopee, 11Street top e-commerce ranking in Malaysia

Lazada, Shopee, 11Street top e-commerce ranking in Malaysia

Lazada, Shopee and 11Street have been ranked the top three companies in terms of the most visited website in Malaysia in the second quarter (Q2) of 2018, according to iPrice Group’s Map of E-Commerce (MoE) list.

Based in KL, iPrice Group is a privately owned online shopping aggregator. According to its portal, the MoE ranks Malaysia’s top 50 e-commerce players based on their average quarterly traffic, mobile application ranking, social media followers and number of staff. The data was collected in July 2018.

Lazada came out top in traffic ranking with 27.99 million visitors and the number of Facebook followers with 25.5 million followers. It took second place for app downloads and Twitter with 31,035 followers.

Shopee took second place in traffic ranking with 12.3 million visitors, while 11Street came in third place with 6.4 million visitors.

However, iPrice said that Shopee inched closer to Lazada’s monthly traffic by two fifths in Q2 2018. In Q1 2018, Shopee’s was one over five to Lazada’s monthly average visitors.

Fashion Valet and CJ Wow Shop entered the top five most visited Malaysian-based e-commerce platform in Q2 2018, while Lelong remained as the most visited Malaysian-based e-commerce platform with 5.2 million visitors.

The top three most visited Malaysian-based e-commerce platforms were Lelong, GoShop (818,000 visitors) and Hermo (758,000 visitors).

In the fashion, health and beauty category, Hermo, Fashion Valet, Poplook, Babydash and Naelofar Hijab are the five most visited Malaysian-based e-commerce platforms as of Q2 2018.
