H&M has unveiled a collaboration with Paris-based artist Nathalie Lete on a children’s clothing and accessories capsule collection. The collection, which will be available online and in selected stores worldwide from March 7, features several of Lete’s fantasy-land-inspired artworks as prints.

The H&M collaboration is a childrenswear collection for babies and children with a wide range of t-shirts, jackets, jeans, dresses, jumpsuits, shorts and swimsuits. The colourful animal and floral prints created by artist Nathalie Lete start with paintings in acrylics by hand, which are then artfully arranged together to create an imaginative story. For this collaboration, Lete brought a tropical jungle to life with chameleons and tigers, along with her iconic representation of flowers with cats, birds and rabbits.

“In my work, I create a fantasy land for myself,” said Lete. “A land that I want to share with other people to make them dream. It’s all about flowers, animals, birds, naivety and colors. I want to create a cocoon that brings happiness and harmony all around. The relationships between the different elements tells stories, stories that create a beautiful atmosphere. Foot Locker boosts capital expansion

Foot Locker has announced a US$275 million capital expenditure program for this year, with Asia singled out as a target market. The investment is $75 million more than the US-headquartered sports-shoe and apparel retailer allowed for last year. “The capital spending planned for this year reflects increased investments in the company’s store fleet in all existing regions, including Asia, and in its digital initiatives,” the company said in a statement.

“In addition, the company will continue to spend capital to build out its supply chain and other infrastructure capabilities.”

Chairman and CEO Richard Johnson said Foot Locker sees “exciting opportunities” to invest in the business this year. The capital commitment followed decisions to launch a share buy-back program and to pay a dividend to shareholders.

“Taken together, these actions demonstrate that our board is confident that Foot Locker can simultaneously deliver strong financial results, invest in the long-term growth of the business, and provide meaningful returns to our shareholders,” he said.

In Singapore, Foot Locker opened three stores last year, in Jem Mall, Century Square and Suntec City.

  • Smaller duty-free alcohol allowance and GST relief for overseas shopping

Smaller duty-free alcohol allowance and GST relief for overseas shopping

From midnight tonight, Singapore duty-free allowances will be cut by about a third for returning travellers. Other allowances have also been reduced. Travellers staying outside of Singapore for fewer than 48 hours will be liable for 7 per cent GST on items bought overseas worth more than SG$100 – down from the previous threshold of $150. For travellers outside the country for a period longer than 48 hours, the $600 threshold will similarly be lowered, to $500.

The changes were announced yesterday by Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat as part of the nation’s new Budget. From April 1, the alcohol concession will also be lowered from three litres of wine or beer to two litres. The spirits cap remains at one litre.

According to the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore and Singapore Customs, the cuts to Singapore duty-free allowances are designed to support the city state’s existing tax intake in the face of increasing international travel.

Returning travellers are required to declare taxable items on arrival, and have been advised to keep purchase receipts to assist in calculating any taxes due. Advance declaration and payment is available via the Customs @ SG mobile app or web portal. Failure to declare or a false declaration can incur a fine of $10,000 as well as up to a year in prison.

E-commerce firm Zilingo bags US$226m in funding

Singapore online fashion market Zilingo has achieved capital investment of $226 million in a Series D funding round. The investments were made by the firm’s existing backers, including Sequoia Capital, as well as newcomers Temasek Holdings and EDBI, and will support the business’s expansion into fresh markets in the Philippines, Indonesia and Australia, as well as build new infrastructure and modernise its supply chains.

A report in DealStreetAsia last January suggested that Zilingo was considering listing an IPO with a view to developing offline retail.

“Sequoia’s investment in Zilingo dates back to when the company wasn’t even yet incorporated and the name wasn’t finalised,” said Sequoia Capital (India) Singapore MD Shailendra Singh.

“Ankiti and team have rapidly transformed their original ideas about Zilingo into a platform company that serves fashion consumers, merchants, retailers, brands and manufacturers, collectively representing a multi-hundred billion dollar market size.”

Zilingo serves more than 20,000 merchants and retailers across Southeast Asia. It is currently valued at an estimated $1 billion.

  • Singapore December retail sales drops 3 per cent

Singapore December retail sales drops 3 per cent

Singapore retail sales in December slipped 3 per cent year on year. Including motor vehicles in the data, they fell by 6 per cent. There was a month-on-month decline of  4.1 per cent excluding vehicles, largely due to the online-sales boom driven by Singles Day and Black Friday in November.

Online retailing continues to eat into traditional channels, accounting for 5.5 per cent of total sales in December, which compares favourably with the festivals-driven 6.6 per cent in November.

The main drivers of change in monthly data was a 20.7 per cent slump in motor vehicle sales, and a 16.8 per cent fall in sales of computer and telecommunications equipment, largely down to  new product releases in December 2017.

Singapore retail sales in December of recreational goods, watches and jewellery and furniture and household equipment decreased between 3.9 per cent and 5.8 per cent. Statistics Singapore attributed that to lower demand for sporting goods, jewellery and furniture. Conversely, sales of medical goods and toiletries increased 1.8 per cent.

Sales of food and beverage services increased 4.5 per cent in December, compared to the same month last year.

Sales by food caterers, fast-food outlets, restaurants and other eating places (such as cafes) all increased, by between 2.5 per cent and 6.6 per cent year on year.

  • Asia-Pacific shoppers favour cross-border shopping

    Asia-Pacific shoppers favour cross-border shopping

Half of online shoppers in Asia-Pacific make purchases cross-border, according to a recent report by yStats. The top two markets for cross-border shopping in the region are Hong Kong and Singapore while Japan shuns the trend, with over nine in 10 online shoppers buying only domestically. The tendency to buy from foreign online sellers also prevails in Australia and New Zealand, where a double-digit share of digital spending is cross-border.

The top three destinations of cross-border online shoppers in Asia-Pacific are China, the US and Japan. Chinese online shoppers themselves prefer shopping platforms hosted by local providers, such as Tmall Global, Kaola and JD Global.

Apparel and accessories was the most-in-demand product category. In South Korea, this sector accounted for more than one-third of e-commerce purchases from foreign sellers.

    Handheld connections prefered

A standout characteristic of cross-border shopping in Asia-Pacific is the high level of mobile usage.

Digital buyers in China and India were more likely to place orders on foreign websites through smartphones and tablets than through a desktop computer.

The Asia-Pacific Cross-Border B2C E-Commerce 2018 report covers online retail imports and exports in 10 nations within Asia Pacific.

  • SE Asia Stocks: Most end lower, Vietnam hits near 2-month high

SE Asia Stocks: Most end lower, Vietnam hits near 2-month high

Most Southeast Asia stock markets closed lower on Tuesday while Vietnam rallied for the second straight session to its highest level in nearly two months. Washington and Beijing will commence high-level trade talks this week to negotiate an end to their bitter trade dispute. Despite positive responses from both sides, the sailing of two U.S. destroyers near the disputed South China Sea, and China’s subsequent anger over the move appeared detrimental to negotiations.

The Indonesian index fell the most in the region, closing 1.1 percent lower in its worst session this year, weakened by a slump in financial and telecom stocks.

The country’s biggest bank by market value, Bank Central Asia, shed 0.6 percent, whereas Telekom Indonesia lost 2.8 percent.

The Philippine benchmark slipped 0.6 percent, dragged by consumer and industrial stocks. Meanwhile, the country’s trade deficit narrowed in December as imports tumbled for the first time in a year.

The stock index has outperformed other exchanges in the region so far in 2019, gaining about 7.3 percent.

“We are mildly concerned about the surprise pullback in capital goods and raw materials. If this continues, this could show that recent aggressive tightening by the BSP (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas) is starting to bite into investment appetite, hampering the nascent investment-driven growth story that we have witnessed of late,” ING said in a note.

Meanwhile, Vietnam benchmark rose for the second straight session and ended up 1.2 percent at its highest level since Dec. 17, with real estate and consumer stocks leading the gains.

Property developer Vingroup JSC scaled 4.9 percent, while Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp jumped 1.9 percent.

Vietnam was also chosen to host this month’s summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his North Korean counterpart KimJong Un.
